Magic has always existed in some form or another; whether through mystical tales or actual manifestations. However, modern times strayed away from the latter and accepted the former. Technology was relied on more and more heavily and magic pushed further and further away. Years passed and as most people looked to the future, a handful looked to the past. This small group searched for the relics of the past. Mainly, old fossils and ancient tools were found. However, one discovery finally graced the world again with its fabled footsteps. An old text explaining the magic of old found in a long forgotten personal library in the cold north set the world abuzz only months later. After careful study, the group of researchers, scientists, and archeologists finally deciphered the text and brought manifestation of magic into the world. The text was a small list of agricultural spells, but it was the first manifestation of magic in thousands of years.
Media coverage and internet articles flooded the world as new spells were deciphered and the old secrets of the lost art were practiced as commonplace once again. Simple guidelines to magic surfaced as the arts were further explored to ease new users into a literally magical world.
Magic is the extension of one's soul. Whether giving strength to a flower to grow through snow or lighting a fireplace by ones willpower, the soul is the base of all spells. As such, magic is limited by that fact. Those with poor souls and evil intent are essentially barred from magic. Those with strong souls may use magic as far as their will allows. Each spell drains the soul slightly and can cause adverse effects to the physical body if overused. Thankfully, the soul can recover over time. With that in mind, magic can be used time and time again.
Magic itself is not as powerful as some mysticisms would claim. Claims that a single spell could call upon a typhoon as the snap of a finger are simply unrealistic. The uses of magic are more practical. Agriculture and daily needs are mainly within the scope of what magic is used for. Uses can range from agriculture to creating a slight breeze for a few moments on a hot day. Only those that have undergone rigorous discipline training can use magic at a higher level. This type of training is only available to military personnel and rare eccentrics.
Unknown to most, the aide of magic now used in commonplace society is the light form. The text discovered years ago contained another half that was labeled as dark and never publically surfaced. With magic in a light form, the human soul can conjure and transfer forms of magic on its own within reason and within the scope of the soul. The dark side of magic relys on outer sources for power. Outer sources can include deals with what humanity has labeled "demons" and sacrificial rituals. The latter is simply a theft of souls to manipulate and use for more powerful magic. These dark sources are known to be more powerful than their light counterparts. These dark arts were hidden for several years until being appropriated by a new team. The old team that discovered the magic texts that started it all have not been hears of for several years.
Project: Valhalla 7734
By delving deep into the dark arts in the magic texts, we've unlocked greater and more powerful secrets than we ever thought possible. Mythical creatures, demons, even so called gods are within our control. Of course, this project is still under several locks with lost keys for the time being. The world may never actually know about what we do here. Our director mentioned that our project may be split up or even discontinued due to the frightening volume of the sheer powers at work here. That is the purpose of this document: posterity.
Our attempts at invocations and contracts with dark powers have proven to be hit and miss. While we can cause an event with a dark being go occur, the contract between our subject and the power is their own accord. Some of the powers at work are malicious and make off with the souls of our subjects with nothing in return. We believe that the dark powers or demons con the subjects out of their souls as old legends would suggest. What becomes of them is still undetermined. However, successful contracts have yielded strong results. We are still unable to iron out the details of the contracts, but we know that the subjects are barred from disclosing details.
Our experiments with runes being enscribed in the body have been more consistent than the demon invocation. The results are similar but the process is somewhat scarring and leaves the subjects unstable. Some runes have imbued the subjects with too much power to contain in the human form. One notable instance resulted in a paranormal implosion of the subject. The body was unharmed, however the soul seemingly ceased to exist in a violent fashion. Experiments are ongoing.
The lower levels of the facility have made progress with combining several souls into one subject. This act of course destroys several subjects just to produce one. They team conducting these experiments have little to no contact outside of their reports. Those of us on the outside and those down there intend to keep it that way. The results of several souls inside one body produce a balance between light and dark arts. The subjects do however complain of voices in their head in some cases. Earlier batches and stress tests produced mainly insane products.
An unforeseen paranormal event has yielded promising results. For unknown reasons during some experiments, a presumably deceased soul takes residence in a subjects body. This new soul takes control of the body and exhibits some knowledge of dark arts. Causes of this instance are still a mystery.
Rituals and offerings to so called gods have rarely succeeded. The few successes we have had are beyond our comprehension. These subjects are seemingly limitless within the realm of the chosen god. We've had to get creative with restraints.
Constellations have yielded fine results. Old zodiac signs are the key to unlocking the power int he signs. The subject just simply has to be born at the appropriate time and exposed to different elements under the watch of the stars. Results are similar to those of the god experiments but more limited.
Dragons may be the most interesting out of the sources of power we have explored. While we have been unable to conjure a physical Dragon, their geological marks on our world still contain their blessings. One particular subject had to be drowned in a certain river with a kanji spell held over the water to bring out the dragon's spirit. These experiences typically require killing the subject to have then revived by their new found strength. As such, these experiments are very few with only handfuls of results.
Wiccan circles have given more controllable results. The process is slow and ongoing to imbue a subject, but stable and consistent at the end. If this process can be hastened, it may be chosen over any others.

The director has informed me that we are scrapping the current lab and moving location immediately. The subjects are to be wiped of all memories and disposed of as well as all non essential records destroyed. It seems that our beloved Valhalla station has been compromised by a rival station going rogue. As far as the 7734 project is concerned, this may be our destruction. End log.
R until I finish editing, its the return of magic to the modern world. Most people use the light side and it's somewhat of a novelty or parlor trick with a few practical uses. The dark side is hidden behind closed doors in secret laboratories where it's properties are explored through project 7734. The happening happens and one lab, Valhalla, is forced to shut down and evacuate due to another lab going rogue. The result leaves behind some of subjects of the Valhalla lab with very little to no memories and great power. From there we're in a loose sandbox.
