Ghouls
Ghouls
Ghouls are a carnivorous species that is only able to feed on humans and other ghouls. They are as close to humans as possible: They normally have the same physical appearance and intelligence as a human with the exception of diet, mentality and inner biology. If certain rare conditions are met, ghouls and humans may even be able to have offspring (see One-Eyed Ghoul), and a ghoul's organs can be successfully transplanted into a human.
Besides water and coffee, a ghoul can only feed on humans and ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues are also different from humans', making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable.[1]
While ghouls can't eat normal food, they can drink coffee for some unknown reason.[2] They are also able to drink plain water.[1]
If ghouls try to eat other kinds of food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit.[1] If ghouls are forced or force themselves to digest such food, it will degrade their physical condition.[3][4]
Ghouls don't need to eat in the short term like humans do. They can survive for one or two months just feeding on one body. However, some ghouls eat more simply for pleasure.[1]
When a ghoul enters an extreme state of hunger, a ghoul will suffer very painful headaches. The ghoul will lose all of their reason and will be driven by instinct alone. They will feed on anything to end this state, even on close friends.[5] Touka Kirishima describes this state of near-starvation as hell.[6]
Although ghouls can go up to two months without human flesh, some ghouls can feed on more than eleven people in just a few days, This is known as 'binge eating,' a habit sustained by Rize Kamishiro.
A ghoul has high physical capability. A ghoul is much stronger than an average human: They are able to send an average human flying if they hit strong enough[7] and a ghoul can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands.[8] Ghouls are also able to jump several meters high.[9]
Under normal conditions, ghouls have a high regenerative ability: Small wounds and fractures heal in a matter of hours to a day,[10] and even grave wounds heal after few days, as long as a ghoul has adequate food supply.[11]They also have a tougher body than most regular solid materials. For example, if a Ghoul were to be stabbed with a knife, the metal of the knife would bend. Ghouls' body wouldn't get injured easily and only more keen tougher materials can injure them. A strong enough force may also be able to break their tough body.
Ghouls have better senses than humans. They can smell people or meat from afar[9][2] and can tell apart humans and ghouls by their smell.[12][13] They also have a heightened sense of hearing that even allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away.[13]
Ghouls seem to age like humans.
Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than a human.[14] If the average healthy human has about 200-500 Rc level, then the ghoul has about 1000-8000 Rc level.[15]
Ghouls have a main weapon that is described as their claws, called Kagune. It can be like a sharp wing or simple claws or even a tail, depending on the ghoul's materials and his own Rc type. Another "monstrous" trace is the Kakugan, what is called for ghoul's red eyes. Ghouls will envelop their eyes into kakugan by their own will, hunger or using their kagune.
Ghouls have a liking for human meat, but it's not uncommon for them to cannibalize each other. Ghoul meat is considered coarse and disgusting but it has the merits of being an alternative food source and increases a ghoul's Rc levels to the point of mutation evolving their kagune's overall strength. Rarely, cannibalizing ghouls gain through the mutation an armor-like kagune besides the predatory kagune that ghouls commonly possess, turning them into kakujas.[16]
All ghouls, though invincible to damage from human-made objects, are vulnerable to damage or modifications made to their mucous membranes, such as nostrils, ears, lips, as in Uta's case, and etc...[17]
Currently, the origin of these "monstrous" traces in ghouls is unknown. There are no known links from where ghouls have evolved or came from.
Ghouls can live out as hermits isolated and avoidant of society eyes or can attempt to assimilate with the humans. Living amongst humans is seen as "walking on a thread of rope" because of their biology and social records. If they are caught in ghoul activities or suspected to be a ghoul, investigators have the right to apprehend and kill them to their discretion. Ghouls that are identified are labeled and can be hunted down like fugitive criminals. Because a ghoul doesn't require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally discomfortable. Nonetheless, funds obtained from their societal jobs or careers are spared of the cost of food and could be spent on other necessities.
They can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. They have to make themselves throw up soon afterwards, or they'll become sick. Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to "hunting grounds" on where it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscrimately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume.
A Kagune is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood; and flexible like the flow of water, but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles". The Rc cells are released from a kakuhou piercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. A kagune can be repeatedly hardened and softened at will by the ghoul.
Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune, if not, at least something in relation to a kagune. Hence, Ghoul Investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls.
Kagune Types
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc type of the Ghoul.
There are four different Rc types: Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku and Bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristcally subdue another type, although it may be different for two specific opponents.
The different Rc types originally developed so that a ghoul of one type can win against a ghoul of a disadvantaged type in turf wars.
It is also possible for a child to inherit separate kagunes from each parent to express distinctive hybrid traits as shown with Hinami Fueguchi.
An Ukaku kagune is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area. The kagune is lightweight and can be used to deliver high-speed attacks against an adversary. The kagune is suited both for short-distance and long-distance attacks. Altogether, ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance to end the battle after a short time.
However, releasing the Rc cells extremely decreases stamina. Thus, ukaku-type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time.
Ukaku kagune can use their speed and mobility to shoot down a Bikaku-type user. However, a koukaku-type user can surprise an ukaku-type user by successfully guarding against the ukaku-type user's attacks, leaving the Ukaku vulnerable to counterattacks and exhausting the ukaku-type user in the long run.
Some Ukaku Ghouls are Touka Kirishima, Yoshimura, The One Eyed Owl, Renji Yomo, Kaya Irimi, and Ayato Kirishima
A Koukaku kagune is metallic and released below the shoulder blade. This is achieved by a high density of Rc cells. It is heavy and extremely robust. Of all the kagunes, they have the greatest sturdiness and are especially suited for defense. Normally, they are generally shaped into armors or shields. But on the offense, they can be shaped like melee weapons such as drills, hammers or blades.
Due to its high weight, a koukaku's speed is inferior to all other kagunes and the kagune is hard to wield.
A koukaku can fend off an ukaku onslaught using its guarding capabilities. However, a rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, breaking their kagune and breaching their defenses. Some Koukaku users are Tsukiyama Shuu, Ryouko Fueguchi, Hinami Fueguchi, and Arata Kirishima.
A Rinkaku kagune has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku has powerful regenerative abilities and its peculiar appearance and structure yield a superior striking power. A rinkaku excels in brute strength.
This type's regenerative power is a result of the Rc cells easily binding together. Their Rc cells are more similar to liquids. However, this means that the binding force among the Rc cells must be weak, therefore making the kagune very brittle.
A rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, penetrating the kagune and breaching the koukaku's defenses. However, a rinkaku has serious problems to fight against the balanced bikaku kagune: A bikaku has comprehensively high power, allowing them to fight against the brute-force rinkaku, and the rinkaku kagune's brittleness makes it comparatively easy for the bikaku to cut the kagune off. This disarms a rinkaku no matter how much strength it may possess, leaving the rinkaku at a disadvantage on the defensive.
Some Rinkaku Ghouls are Rize Kamishiro, Ken Kaneki, Hinami Fueguchi, Nashiro Yasuhisa, Kurona Yasuhisa, and Yamori/Jason
A Bikaku kagune typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tailbone. It is good for medium-distance attacks and has decent offense, defense and speed. Thus, they have no notable strengths or weaknesses like the kagune based on other Rc types, meaning the kagune itself is treated as a surprise "trump card."
A bikaku has better speed and durability against the brute-force, brittle rinkaku, allowing them to cut off the rinkaku's kagune. However, a bikaku will be overwhelmed by the faster ukaku user and will lose against the ukaku's long-range attacks.
The balanced characteristics makes the kagune a preferred quinque type for investigators.
Some Bikaku Ghouls are Nishiki Nishio, Bin Brothers, Enji Koma, and Shachi
