The year is 1978, and humanity sails among the stars. With the discovery of Aetherium in the late 1700s and the subsequent great expansion into space, humanity became an interplanetary species, with the great empires expanding their colonial reach to the rest of the solar system. From the dark jungles of Mercury to the great seas of Venus, from the canal-riddled deserts of Mars to the great floating continents of Jupiter, the Solar System is the playground of the colonial empires. Mankind and all the other species of the Solar System sail the void on Aether Ships, powered by the great element, Aetherium. The extraterrestrial natives fight the ever-increasing human expansion, but many are losing and are forced to become a lesser class in their own homelands. Same with the Auto-minds, robots built with brains derived from Babbage's Analytical Engine, working for humanity but often not having rights of their own. Mysteries brew on the edge of the Solar System, rumors of extrasolar empires and invaders, gateways to other solar systems, hidden planets, and more.

The Great Empires are the defining force of the modern era. The British Empire, ruled by Edward of Mars, is the strongest of the empires, but also the most unstable. Its mighty Aether-fleet darts throughout the System, striking down rebellion only for two more to pop up. One good blow and the whole Empire could topple, but they still hold dominance in the system. The French Solar Empire, led by the cyborg emperor Napoleon the Immortal, is quickly rising to take that place. With a much more orderly and under control empire with a stronger leader, the Solar Empire may soon be the new dominant power. The Kingdom of Iberia, while not what it used to be, is still a major player, with a great fleet and a peaceful, multicultural empire. Several other Great Empires exist, such as the Sicilian-Latin Influence Sphere, Russia, and the Qing Dynasty.

In this world of steam and stars, you command an Aether Ship and its crew. Will you be a trader, visiting exotic worlds and meeting strange peoples? Will you be a pirate, taking gold, Aetherium, slaves, and more? A mercenary for one of the Great Empires? A revolutionary? An explorer or a scientist? All of this and more is possible in the Aether.

So, this is a steampunk space travel RP! Each player would start with a relatively small ship and its crew and travel around the solar system, doing missions, getting gear and money, upgrading and buying ships, making connections, and more, all that good stuff. There would be arcs like alien artifacts, big wars, so on to keep the RP from being too unstructured, but there would be a lot of freedom, a sort of sandbox feel. GMs could introduce events, act as NPCs, so on, to make it that even players on their own with no interaction could continue (though that's not necessarily encouraged).

4 rotary blaster cannons, one on the bottom able to turn a full 360 degrees, one on top also able to spin freely and and two on the side, also able to spin a full 360 degrees.

On the front on the bridge are two double barreled blaster weapons rotating on on it's side.

Cables for docking, hauling and grappling onto ships are on either side of the ship.

Lastly, a small double barreled cannon able to launch lasers and shells is in the top of the ship near the blaster cannon.

The ship has an extensive cargo bay. In it, a multitude of supplies, weapons and ill-gotten gains are stories including a small land rover able to hold up to five people.

4 of the crew members are gunners able to use, maintain, repair and upgrade the weapons. One works on the bridge controlling weapon systems and three work on the various weapon computer stations in the ship. On them is one blaster pistol and a shotgun along with various tools.

4 are engineers and various workers around the bridge and ship. The one engineer on the bridge help maintain ship functions such as defense mechanism, engine functions, power maintenance as well as offensive capabilities such as radio jamming, computer hacking and other such tasks. Three work on maintenance keeping power and engines maintained and running. They each carry an assortment of tools as well as a shotgun and blaster pistol.

There is one A.I on the ship known as the Very Intelligent Smart-Ass also known as V.I.S.A. He aids the engineers and yelps perform maintenance and offensive duties aboard the ship. V.I.S.A also has capabilities of activating and deactivating the guard droids. V.I.S.A also has a physical form it could take in the form of another droid having a wrist cannon and taser.

The last two crew.members are soldiers charged with keeping order and fighting aboard other ships. They are the Captain's most trusted crew members and often act as advisors aboard the ship.

Obviously, V.I.S.A is an A.I. The two guard droids are also A.Is however not as sentient as V.I.S.A and often act as sentries.

Seven crew members are martians species, these include the engineers, three gunners and one of the soldiers.

The rest are Terran species from Earth (commonly known as humans)

The crew often as as privateers being employed by greater empires to do their bidding. It wouldn't be an honorable job however it was a necessary one that gave way to large paychecks.

The crew is relatively experienced being with the Captain for years and have a relative trust in each other.

That is, of course most of the crew. Their are two new gunners and three engineers who are new to the ship rather than the job but have been taken in nonetheless.

    Ship weapons: Two vertically hinged debris cannons designed to clear debris and not much else.
    Other: The ship has a large crane atop its centre to help load and unload cargo. It has been used in the past to haul ship carcasses but usually stays true to its intended purpose.

H HeckingHeck Your ship is a little too sci-fi, doesn't really fit with the steampunk aesthetic. Also, just a heads up, there are no laser/plasma weapons. Those are replaced by Pyronium Beams and various other similar things in this universe.

Appearance: It’s mostly humanoid with two antennae like sensors on top of the head, and many small hooks on the hands, feet, elbows, and knees for navigating difficult terrain. It has no eyes, instead relying on an echolocation like ability provided by the sensors in order to see, as well as vibration sensors located in the hands and feet to map subterranean geography. It’s jaw is powerful and filled with wide, flat teeth, made for grinding rocks and metal. Though much of its surface is marred by dents and scratches, the overall integrity of Vat’s “skin” is well maintained, the individual pieces capable of locking together to shield against foreign material at the cost of mobility. In accordance with Vat’s previous line of work, it can withstand volcanic temperatures easily, though has very little shielding against lower temperatures.

History: Originally built for research purposes, Vat was constructed and activated by French funded scientists to map and study the surface and underground of Mars, specifically the planets active volcanoes. As such, it was built with functionality in mind more than aesthetic, however sometime during the design process, it was determined Vat would need a highly analytical mind in order to do what was best for the project when the harsh terrain made communication with a supervisor impossible.

At the time of its construction, the researchers in charge of the project were under much pressure from the higher ups, having been working on the Martian surface for some time with little to no results. Vat was their last chance at renewal for their project, and in the rush to complete it, many standard programming restrictions were ignored or forgotten. The result was an AM with an almost infinite capacity for learning and few restrictions on what it could do with any knowledge it gained.

For years, Vat performed its primary purpose, mapping and sampling areas no one could go before, uncovering many things the researchers hoped would save their project. It wasn't enough, however, and despite all its findings, nothing Vat brought back was deemed of enough interest to continue funding on the project. The project scrapped, Vat was assigned for decommissioning, the French hoping to re-purpose it into something more beneficial to their current goals.

Without any of the standard restrictions embedded in its coding, Vat realized what was going to happen and fled to where it knew no one would be able to follow. For several months, it remained in the pit of a volcano, only emerging when it was sure the search had been abandoned entirely. Unsure of what to do with its newfound freedom, Vat wandered the Martian surface in search of new purpose, eventually stumbling across a Hulthan, collapsed in the desert. With nothing better to do, it helped the Hulthan to the nearest town.

The Hulthan had dreams of one day reaching space, getting off of Mars and going to see new places. Already having decided to stick with him, Vat took on that dream was well, the two meeting more interesting people while they collected the funds needed to purchase a space worthy vessel. They left the planet some time later with their first ship and several new friends, sailing the sky, picking up new members where they found them, and just generally being a small, opportunistic speck in the grand landscape of the solar system

Personality: Vat is self-aware and self-confident. It always knows what its priorities are and what the best course of action would be to keep with the priorities. It has never second guessed itself, and even when, in hindsight, there may have been a better option, it knows it did the best it could with what it had. First and foremost, Vat protects its crew, doing what it must to keep them safe and in good spirits, to the point where there’s not much else on the list. It often appears ruthless and unfeeling because of this mentality, holding all other beings in a lesser light than the crew.

Due to its “us” and “them” mentality, Vat often appears like two different people, depending on who it’s interacting with. With outsiders, it is formal and cold, manipulative and unnerving to be around. It will do what it deems necessary to accomplish its goals, up to and including murder. It often comes across as unpredictable because of this, never handling a situation the same way.

Around the crew, Vat is quiet, but comfortable, sensitive to the overall atmosphere of its ship and subordinates. It doesn’t talk much, but tends to make up for it with an almost uncanny ability to find the source of an issue through observations, though after years of working with the same people, the crew will tell it if there are issues, so it hasn’t had to figure those sorts of things out itself in a while.

Personal Gear: Vat doesn’t have much in the way of personal belongings, nor any sort of preference in equipment. It was built to easily traverse treacherous terrain, and so has a durable skin and surprisingly maneuverable limbs set on free spinning joints. It rarely carries anything consistent with it, though will sometimes have a pack if it intends to return with something.

Skills: It is always aware of its surroundings, capable of scanning and committing to memory an area within moments. It has a hard outer shell, capable of withstanding a lava bath as well as connecting to protect the joints. It can climb any surface at any angle and has a jaw strong enough to grind rocks and unrefined metals.

Ship Name: The ship, formerly known as the HMS Sabre, is now referred to by its "acting crew" as The Runner's Refuge.
Ship Type: The original intent of the ship was for Transport.

The HMS Sabre Runner's Refuge was the result of hastily strapping a radio-remote-controlled turret to a 175 year old military transport. There's barely enough room to crawl everywhere in the ship except for the cockpit (where you can sit upright) and the "crew quarters" (where soldiers used to wait in to be deployed, there's enough room to stand). The ship has no cargo bay, and the "engine room" is a crawlspace like the rest of the pathways between rooms in the ship where you can make repairs to the engine.
Ship weapons: A single 15mm turret controlled by a remote that sends radio signals (roughly on the 34.5 kHz frequency) to a receiver on the turret. The turret ammunition uses special gunpowder with its own oxidizer, which, while making the bullets weaker because the gunpowder is slightly diluted by the oxidizer, allows it to be fired in the vacuum of space. The turret can be manually switched to normal ammo for in-atmosphere engagements. It also has a camera so it can be operated from anywhere on the ship (or off, if the incident is fitting).
Other: The only exit is through the crew quarters; the entire floor drops out into a ramp. In addition, the ship has been equipped with a grappling hook by its new crew. Finally, due to a clever foresight by the designers, there is a layer of glass beneath the armor of the outer hull, making the ship invisible to infrared cameras.

Crew makeup: One captain that doubles as a pilot (who can fight with a pistol in a pinch), one engineer, one "soldier" (using the term as loosely as humanly possible) that doubles as a turret operator, and one medical professional.
Crew species: The captain/pilot is Human, the engineer is an Auto-mind, the soldier/turret operator is a Crusader, and the medic is a rather intelligent Mykofta.
Overall job: When they aren't running from the various authorities that are after them, they make their living salvaging space junk.
Other: All the crew members are refugees in hiding from various governments.

Captain name: Norman Cobbler.
Captain species: Human.
Age: 24.
Place of birth: Ol' Britain itself, in Edinburgh.
Appearance: Norman is a tall, slender man with reddish-brown hair and a pale complexion. His face is sunken and tired, and it's clear from the appearance of his face alone that he hasn't eaten or slept well in a long time. He wears a grey set of overalls over a ragged grey long sleeve shirt.
History: Norman is a child in an old military family, the history of which stretches back far before even the discovery of Aetherium. Like his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and his father before him (and so on and so forth), he signed up for the military and became an Aether ship pilot. However, during a particularly hairy mission on a moon of Jupiter, the landing for one the evacs was too hot to land on without the ship being blown up either on landing or take-off, so Norman panicked and abandoned the last fireteam he needed to pick up and fled. Norman was accused of desertion and treason, and he was sentenced to death. While he was waiting on death row, a prison riot occurred that resulted in a mass prisoner escape. While most of the prisoners were rounded back up, a handful still managed to slip through the British authorities' fingers. Norman was one of them. A short time after escaping, Norman stole an old ship from a scrapyard that was still somewhat spaceworthy, and fled the planet. After gathering a crew of people in similar situations, he began his new career of selling scrap metal from old wreckages and battles.
Personality: Norman is a desperate, tired man, with very little patience or calm. Hardly a leader at all, he's only here because he has no other choice and he's in too deep. He is completely lacking in anything resembling bravery and will run at the first sign of conflict, as well as avoid direct contact with people unless he's selling scrap. He directs almost every waking hour to his ship and his work, leaving him no time to himself, causing him to be incredibly wound up and stressed.
Personal gear: A weapon that barely qualifies for the term "pistol", as it's just a crudely-made, muzzle loaded pistol that fires by holding a lit match to a hole in the top. It fires a volley of the nearest convienient flak—anything from metal birdshot at best to pebbles at worst—from a very short, smoothbore barrel. He's desperately tried to sell it for years, but everyone he meets refuses to buy it.
Skills: He has a passing understanding of military tactics and strategy, as well as being more than capable of navigating and piloting his own ship. He also has a bit of a talent when it comes to bartering.

Ship weapons: 1x Dorsal pyronium Beam (Runs half the length of the ship), 12x point defence cannons.

Other: Small shuttle for planetary landings, Several Large Laboratories and workshops, fairly advanced sensor array. Despite It's advance engines the Raven is a very large ship and so its manoeuvrability suffers. The experimental nature of the pyronium Beam often means that it takes time to cool before firing again, and that's assuming that the crews experimental lenses haven't fractured. The raven also has a very large computational core that connects to almost every system on the ship.

Appearance(description or image): Otto's face is a beautifully crafted ceramic replica of a young mans face, with a sharp jaw line and small blue glowing cameras in the eye socket are surrounded by small gears, due to the ceramic nature of the face his mouth doesn't move and the face has been sealed not painted so it retains its white colouration. He also has short black synthetic hair bonded to his head. He wears a patched British military officers jacket (with no rank insignia) over the top of a light blue collared shirt along with straight dark blue trousers. All of these clothes cover his quite fragile and lithe body, the complex mechanical gear systems that allow movement are covered by only a thin skin like wrapping, His hands are more reinforced however with multiple ceramic plates complete with pressure sensors cover his full 5 digit hands. He occasionally will pull a brown leather apron on instead of his jacket if he is assisting engineering.

History:
Project 0110 Conception: Project 0110 was an attempt by the British empire to build an AM into their ships that could manage many aspects of the ship at once, cutting down on crew numbers, at the same time as offering advanced data analysis and tactical options to the command crew on the bridge. They attempted this by creating a Auto mind with greatly advanced processing and multitasking capabilities that could then be further enhanced by connecting into a large on board ship mainframe. This mainframe would both boost the ability of the AM to handle large data amounts but also tie into the ship systems and the various interface displays throughout the ship allowing the AM to control parts of the ship if no crew was present to do so.

Project 0110 Construction and Testing: The military top brass insisted that the AM be fully capable of meeting the requirements to allow them to make a statement on both their great military power but also their advanced technology. Scientists were drafted from all over to not only try and reuse current cutting edge technology but create new technology that would become the cutting edge. The project ran for 4 years before it produced it's first prototype however the AM had large instabilities in its cogitative centres resulting in an unstable personality. After several more attempts over the course of a year they created a stable AM that they felt they could show to the top brass, the demonstration was going well until the AM's tactical thinking led it to believe that the reason that it's ship was not functioning as well as it could be because the captain of the ship often ignored its advice. It's conclusion from this was to eliminate the captain and bridge crew using an automated defence automaton. The brass immediately called for the decommissioning of the AM and the closing down of the project.

Project 0110 Final days: After the plug had been pulled by the top brass the scientists decided that they might be able to still salvage something so after begging they gained permission to use what they had developed to produce one more AM this time with large emotional restrictions. For 1 month the scientists raced to produce what they were sure would be their finest work ever and that would have them hailed as geniuses. This revolutionary AM was installed into a new advanced frigate that had just finished assembly in the shipyards in Saturn's rings. The frigate was launched to carry out testing at a facility on Jupiter, The frigate arrived and was running through manoeuvres and drills when the facility was attacked by insurgents. Moving into a bombardment position to try and eliminate the insurgent ground forces the atmospheric effects led to the AM failing to notice incoming insurgent air power. Although the fighters were destroyed their opening volley had caused serious damage to the engines and although the AM advised an emergency Landing the Captain wanted to stay airborne for a little longer to help deal with stragglers. When power was sent to the engines to help the ship race after the remaining fleeing insurgents it created a critical feedback loop that ignited the Aetherium reactor tearing the ship to pieces.

Otto: A group of scavengers had been nearby when the sky was lit by a colossal explosion, deciding that fresh even if everyone had died there must be at least some salvage so their small skimmer started racing towards the site. Eventually they found the forward area of what must have been a British aethership, going through it they saw that very little of anything delicate remained however several of the crew in the bridge were still alive due to being strapped in, additionally their was a auto mind in military uniform with it's head at an odd angle that was hanging by a bundle of cables from it's neck and back. Deciding to take the crew and AM to the nearest hospital they loaded everyone aboard the skimmer, however one of the more mechanically inclined of their group decided to have a look at the Autominds program in case it could tell them more about what happened. After repairing the few damaged connection that she could find in the neck and back that had been wrenched out of place by the cables she opened that back of his head and accessed his program. She learnt very little about anything because all of the program was encrypted in a form that she didn't think she could crack even with the best equipment, however she could tell the structure of the program which showed large blocks of behavioural restraints. She assumed that this AM had been captured by the British where they had reprogrammed it and forced restraints on its program to stop it from rebelling. Quickly she informed the rest of the team and they decided that they would remove the restraints, get the AM fixed up and then leave before the rest of the crew did.

The mechanics in the hospital fixed up the connector damage that they could find but informed the crew that there could be internal damage that they hadn't fixed because they had never seen half of the structures inside him before. As they moved him back on to the skimmer and left the mechanic noticed that he had a Name on his neck OTTO (It actually said 0110 but a scratch had joined the ones). The AM remained offline until a few days later the mechanic went to look at his program again to see if her removal of the restraints was why he wasn't waking up, this caused a code updated and rebooted the system. The scavengers informed the AM that he had been kidnapped by the British and that was why he had no memories of before his service on the frigate. Otto was very sceptical of this as he had the plans of his manufacture in his mind but he didn't feel the need to never leave the empire that he remembered from before and so decided that since the empire would assume him dead he might as well remain free as it minimised the possibility of him actually dying.

He continued with that scavenger group for a few years functioning as a skillful mechanic but he longed to get back into space, although he had become accustomed to the ground he still yearned for the free movement an opportunity that space provided. The scavenger group had been going around the site of a skirmish between the Qing Dynasty and the Kingdom of Iberia when they came across one of Qing dynasties Corvettes, despite being out of the loop for a few years Otto still quickly identified that it had suffered severe hull breaches on its lower levels and damage to it's life support systems which meant that its reactor and drive systems were still mostly intact. After a discussion Otto and the Hulthan mechanic who had originally removed his restraints, and who he had become good friends with over the years, bid the group farewell and with a few hasty patches took the ship back into space. Over the next 4 years the ship would be fixed up and making money off selling small bits of tech that were either scavenged or made. At the same time they came across several displaced scientists and engineers from various walks of life from ex military who wanted to leave to civillian's who had been punished for studying forbidden aspects of science. Otto realised after the second scientist joined the crew that if he could find more of these people and offer them a place to work then they could make money by offering their services and selling tech that they invented. So many of the remaining pieces of the corvette were torn out and remoulded into a factory ship.

Personality: Otto has a very practical personality, his tactical mind often lets him see the way to get the most out of the situation, that being said he's not very good and manipulating people because despite his large knowledge base he lacks the practical experience that is often required. He also likes relaxing with the rest of his crew, it reminds him of being with the scavengers and not how he was treated as just a walking computer in the military.

Personal gear: Otto doesn't carry very much additional to his clothes but lately he's taken to carrying a smaller radio transmitter that can connect to one of his interface ports via a wire and the computation engine on the raven.
