The Basic Lore:
While this is a fantasy world, I'd like to incorporate some real world elements.
1.) There will be a monarchy ruling. King Avren is the current ruler; his people find him mostly a joke, and know it's his entourage of Parliament that actually have any say in the nations affairs.
2.) Naturally, there will be those who aren't quite so fond of pirates. Naval officers who may try to intercept and take over any ships they see with unsavory company. (Judgmental much?)

Merfolk Lore:
Merfolk in this roleplay have two different forms. They do not transform by simply touching water. I imagine them more having to learn the change as a skill. It being somewhat painful to put their bodies through, it's like easier for older merfolk than it is younger ones.
While
nearly every merfolk is able to converse easily with sea creatures not every merfolk is gifted beyond this. Those who do develop special abilities are destined to become leaders and mentors in their society. The two merfolk siblings are both carry such abilities (that will be decided).

Let's talk about Reproduction:

Merfolk are born from special coral formations that serve as incubation chambers. Parents would deposit eggs into these coral structures, and over time, the corals would provide the necessary nutrients and protection for the embryos to develop into young merfolk. A merfolk reaches maturity similar to human ages, but lives well beyond that.

Mermaid Society: The mermaid kingdom is ruled by a council of wise merfolk who possess unique powers. The council aims to maintain harmony in the kingdom and protect its secrets from the world above. The society is organized around a deep connection to the ocean and its magic, with reverence for the sea's creatures and the natural balance of the underwater world. Naturally, they are distrusting of most humans.
Examples of current powers..

Leader of the Tides: This individual has a strong affinity for controlling water currents and tides. They are responsible for maintaining the stability of the oceans around their home, protecting the kingdom from external threats, and managing the flow of resources and communication within the realm.

Harmony's Herald: A mermaid with the power of bioluminescent manipulation, this council member oversees the health and healing of the realm. They use their powers to mend wounds, nurture the kingdom's plant life, and create calming and awe-inspiring displays of light.

Evolving Society: The mermaid society is not static and evolves over time. As new challenges arise, the roles and structure of the council may adapt to address these challenges. The society's core values, such as respect for the ocean's magic and the importance of balance, remain constant, but the specific responsibilities of council members can shift to meet the needs of the kingdom in a changing world.

What do they eat?
Sea Flora and Fauna:
The majority of merfolk primarily consume marine flora and fauna. This includes seaweed, kelp, aquatic plants, and various types of algae. They also consume smaller marine animals like fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

However, there have been stories (mostly told in horror amongst children) of the rogue merfolk who tasted human flesh and grew to have a deep craving for it. Typically, those would wait for a pirate or navy ship to wreck before dragging them away. Some bold enough even transformed into human shapes, to seduce humans before feasting on them.

Pirate Lore:
Pirate Brotherhood's Function: The pirate society is a complex web of alliances, rivalries, and informal agreements. While crews compete for plunder and territory, they also recognize the need for unity against common enemies like the powerful navies and ruthless privateers that seek to eliminate piracy.
Pirate crews are organized as small, close-knit communities with a flat hierarchy. While the captain holds ultimate authority during times of crisis and decision-making, the input of the crew members, especially the officers, is valued. The first mate, quartermaster, and navigator play significant roles in advising the captain and maintaining crew cohesion.
Unlike what most commoners may believe in stories, there are some rules tentatively obeyed by most pirates.
  1. Honoring Parley: Pirates respect the tradition of parley, a negotiation or discussion between opposing parties to prevent needless bloodshed. When the black flag of parley is raised, all hostilities cease, and both parties engage in peaceful dialogue.
  2. Respecting the Marked Territory: Pirates recognize certain unspoken boundaries and territories claimed by other crews or factions. Entering a marked territory without permission is seen as a breach of trust and can lead to retaliation.
  3. Loyalty to the Ship: Pirates prioritize the safety and well-being of their ship and crew above personal gains. Damaging or abandoning a ship during battle or danger is considered an act of cowardice and betrayal.
  4. Trial by Duel: Disputes and conflicts among pirates can be resolved through one-on-one duels. Pirates believe that personal grievances should not disrupt the unity of the crew, and a fair duel settles matters honorably.
  5. Mutual Aid: Pirates offer assistance to fellow pirates in times of distress, even if they are from different crews. Providing aid could involve offering supplies, repairs, or protection against common enemies.
  6. Caring for Prisoners: While pirates may capture ships and crews, they are expected to treat prisoners with respect and dignity. Cruelty or unnecessary harm to captives is discouraged and may lead to internal consequences.
  7. Free Will: Pirates recognize the importance of individual freedom and choices. Crew members are not forced into piracy; they join willingly and are free to leave if they no longer wish to participate.

Of course, this is not to be said about every Captain. *Cough* Bitter End*Cough

Locations:
Here you see the Nation of Obelia. Primarily, our roleplay will be taking place in Port Royal and the Unstable Keys. There may be a few posts that feature the mainland and it's royalty on occasion though.
