On the 30th of March, 1867; The Russian Empire sold the Alaskan territories to the United States to help fix their economic difficulties back home. In this alternate reality, such a event never occured. Russia kept Alaska and sought to make it a representation of the Empire's prestige to the powers of Europe and Americas
The Russian Empire sought to make Alaska the fore-front of their might; pouring vast amounts of materials and expenses, transforming a bitterly cold expanse, void of almost any civilisation. The massacre of the Alaskan native population in 1890 was seen as a necessary evil to allow pure blooded Russians to completely take over the lands, turning the new colony into a grand trading hub in the north pacific seas. Russian architecture rose imposing churches, palaces and streets. Rivaling American cities in terms of infrastructure and bringing alot of international attention to the Empire's might and power.
However, paradise rarely exists for long...
It was during the beginning of what turned out to be the dissolution of the Soviet Union that gave Alaska the chance to seek out a future of its own. A coup d'état on the 12th of August, 1991; lead by Russo-Alaskan Nationalists forced the Soviet governing party out of power and declared independence on the 1st of September. The Republic of Russo-Alaska had a very rocky start as soviet retaliation saw the country be almost torn apart in various riots, assassinations and take-over plots funded by the KGB. Alas however, the various political and military parties of Russo-Alaska bonded together to repel the outsiders from their paradise.
What followed afterwards was nine years of brutal civial war for the country. Nationalists, Socialists and everything in between were lashing out in pitiful attempts to claim control of the situation. Fearing that the new Russian Federation would attempt to re-take Alaska, NATO intervention was decided and a more moderate, pro-western goverment was eventually seated in 2000. Whilst things seemed to once more turn into chaos as many Russo-Alaskans dismissed the new goverment as nothing more than a 'joke'. Several months passed before eventually the heads of state finally got their 'act together' and a form of peace fell once more on the icey-wonderland.
Ideas were put together to please the Russo population and smooth things over with the new leadership, police forces were mainly manned by Russo employees with some western advisers and administrators to keep things running smoothly. The borders to the outside world began to open as foreign workers were hired to modernize the infrastructure of various major Alaskan cities. glass skyscrapers were constructed alongside the old soviet churches, leading to a rather unusual traffic of suits and priests walking down the same streets. Road signs were updated to consist of both cyrillic and latin lettering although many small buisness' didn't bother to re-write their signs or advertisements.
Progress was going so well that Russo-Alaskan troops were deployed alongside their allies in the Afghan war, working primarily as ISAF troops. through the blaze of war and their vast oil fields, relations between Alaska and America continued to sweeten over the years; by 2018 the two had signed various defencive and trade treaties. These treaties would later turn out to be Alaska's downfall.
The details are blurry but overall, most folk agree that North Korea, or China.. or whoever's evil these days, decided to declare war on America and it's allies; Alaska included. on the 25th of November, 2018; the world went to war and on the 1st of December, the war was over.
The number of survivors across the world are unknown, probably around a few million; still with no goverment to keep things in check, society broke down as several wars over resources were fought. Those that won, fought amongst themselves; the population continued to fall.
Our story is set in Anchorage, Alaska. whilst the city itself was blasted and cracked by the war, it's people remained somewhat safe underground in the maze of soviet metros and service tunnels. Two years they remained below as the radiation was far too dangerous to step on the surface for longer than a minute before turning in a blob of goo.. or something..
Mother nature took advantage of the lack of humans to play some dirty tricks on the world. exotic plants thrown from the south in the various explosions that rocked the world, setting their new homes in the city. Mutated by the radiation, entire neighbourhoods were transformed into deadly swamps; producing plant-life that could swallow a horse whole and dissolve the bones within hours. Fair to say, the surface was a dangerous place to go. The air above ground began to turn toxic as the radiation fused with the trees; warping their oxygen making functions and turning it into something far more disgusting. The wildlife fared little better as entire species were wiped out by either the conflict or the new enviorment. The beasts that survived, later thrived as they evolved or mutated into otherworldly monsters that roamed the swamps and overgrowths.
Strangely, the deadly new plantlife had the side-effect of warming parts of the city. Before, areas would be covered in snow and ice; now warm rivers and jungles produced vast clouds of steam into the grey skies above.
//Heyo folks, i've been away for several weeks due to IRL stuff and during that time I have been working up this for a RP. I used alot of influences from various survival games such as Metro, Stalker & Fallout for ideas.
Our characters are survivors in this new world, living in a alternate Anchorage; where it remained a russian state until 1991 before becoming independent. A mix of old soviet and modern western buildings litter what remains and the population has mostly settled in the metros below ground, setting up a new civilisation in the tunnels and stations. Your character can have any occupation that you can think of, Trader that visits the various stations; a hunter that braves the surface in search of edible plant & wildlife and so on...
In terms of how the RP is done, I do have a couple of 'iffy' opinions. Firstly being the amount of "Super Soldier, DEVGRU, Master Chief" Ex-Soldiers.. You know the kind i'm thinking of, 7ft tall beasts that apparently are more common than any other types of characters.. Whilst you are free to make these kind of characters, I would always be delighted if other types of characters were made.. This world has everyday people in it, I hope to see 'everyday' type of characters made instead of this turning into a Delta-Force RP 2020...
Secondly, this new Alaska was a soviet state with almost no westerners until 2000. Scavengers looking for guns are likely to find 'Soviet weapons and equipment', not AR-15s with 1000's of silly attachments and gadgets. Besides, it's your character that has to carry all the stuff so I hope you'll be considerate on what's appropiate to appear in the world.
