  • In 2020 called for a state of emergency in the United States and a declaration of war against Japan. All that passed military screening for disability or disease were deployed to Asia to battle. Akin to the 1940s, rations would sustain the nation, and women would be toiled into the defence industry. Over the course of the next two years pop culture would wane to nothing. No longer did you see cartoon animals on cereal boxes or commercials for soap-making kits or hot wheels. Animations laced political messages and propaganda with catchy tunes and rhymes. A nuclear war was foreseen by most.

It began in 2022. Seven percent of the population presumed dead and the other twenty percent were reported missing when America took a nuclear hit. Radiation posed an obvious risk and by the year 2023 health ministers saw the highest number of still-births in over thirty years. Radio contamination meant the death toll would be excelling into the hundred millions within mere months.

A viral epidemic around the corner strained those figures. Origin unknown, they called it ‘Algae’ on the streets for the vivid green colour and thick consistency it would turn the saliva of those infected. Before long cannibalism, bandits and criminals was all that ruled the cities. The suburbs held separate horrors, and years of the virus being uncontained had meant people eventually attained the skill and stamina to live among the dead.

By the time the military took up a government presence, things changed and hope was found among those that survived. Cities were rebuilt and people were accustomed to the zombie presence. How Australians checked their shoes for spiders before putting them on, Americans loaded a pistol before heading out to buy groceries. It had all became the same and as the years went on, things became somewhat normal. In 2046 chocolate was manufactured for the first time in over two decades and provided thousands of vacancies to men and women. Colourless television made another début in 2050 and shortly after full-colour was introduced. Chivalry and rocking horses returned, and though some would have stressed otherwise, the apocalypse had no doubt bred a new race built on resilience, equality and traditional American values once more. It was total brilliance while it lasted.

Now the year is 2066 and the effects of chemical warfare still has a lasting print on our lives in generic America. But things won’t get easier for us.
    The second wave is here.
