The Duck Overlord
It was weird. Even though Belle was quite unconscious, a part of her was aware of everything around her. Natalie’s desperate pleading, Cody calling 911… Damn, did she ruin the party? Maybe she should have waited until Pete and Wendy began fighting, and—
Oh, what was the use anymore?
In her unconscious state, Belle realized that she couldn’t keep hoping that Pete would someday magically fall in love with her. That only happened in the movies. And if there was anything Belle had learned by now, it was that life was nothing like the movies, no matter how hard you wished for it.
Then she heard a voice breaking through the dark. It was warm and reassuring, just like the hand that was now resting over hers. Caleb? It had to be. Had she had the ability, she would have smiled. Caleb was always there for her whenever her heart was breaking over Pete, and now he was here for her when life proved to be just a bit too much to handle. He was the calming force in the tumultuous household. She drifted further into darkness, but not before she murmured, “Caleb…”
By the time Belle woke up, she was in a hospital bed and very, very tired. A doctor hovering over her smiled gently. “Glad to see you’re awake.”
“What happened to me?” she croaked. Her voice was hoarse, probably from a mixture of yelling followed by intense disuse.
The doctor explained, “You have high levels of stress, I’m afraid. That caused your body to overwhelm itself, thereby causing your fainting. But you’ll be fine. However, you will have to make sure whatever caused your stress doesn’t worry you so much.”
So what you’re saying is, Pete is the root cause of it all? Belle thought ruefully. How many people would Pete ruin before he was through? How many lives would he shatter just so he could do whatever he wanted?
Closing her eyes, Belle made a decision. If I ever see Pete again, I won’t let any feelings for him get in the way. It never would’ve worked out. He’s too much of a ticking time bomb.
Cody couldn’t have called 911 a moment too soon. Everyone surrounding Belle and Natalie was panicking, and really, it was just irritating. He screamed, “GET OUT! PARTY’S OVER!” and the partygoers obliged. They weren’t going to get tangled up in this. Bastards.
Crouching down beside Natalie, Cody tugged on her arm. “C’mon, Nat, we gotta go.” She was beside herself, and that wasn’t good. He’d probably have to drive them all to the hospital. How the hell he managed to stay so calm in all this, he’d probably never find out. But right now, all that mattered was Belle.
The ambulance arrived, and Caleb rode with Belle. Good. Pete looked like he wanted to protest, but apparently, he’d lost his voice the same way Belle had lost consciousness. Cody didn’t even have to bet on what was probably the root cause of all this. Or, rather, who.
Cody found Lily somewhere in the house, surprisingly with Hunter (but really, he couldn’t give two damns about it), and said, “Can you watch the house? We’re going to the hospital.” She nodded. Really, it was best she stay at home. If she and Belle got into a fight when Belle was already fragile…that wouldn’t be good. Even if they were on the same page about Wendy.
Once at the hospital, Cody sat down beside Natalie and waited. And waited. God, the minutes ticked by slowly at this time of night. Noting his girlfriend’s face, he placed his hand over hers and squeezed. “She’ll be fine. She’s stronger than she looks.”
A nurse came out to the waiting room and assured them that Belle was awake. Naturally, Pete jumped up and tried to visit her, but the nurse rejected the idea. “She needs peace and quiet right now. And she already has that young man with her.”
“She’s right, Pete. You shouldn’t go in there.” Cody’s voice was cold and harsh, but the nurse seemed grateful for the intervention nonetheless. “You think you have any right to be in there with Belle? You may claim to be her best friend, but right now, Caleb’s probably the best friend who can be in there with her? Who do you think comforts her when she cries over the dumbass mistakes you make? Stop being such a prick for a few minutes and think about what you’ve done to Belle!” He barely had to raise his voice to make his point; Cody’s words were the truth. Pete was toxic to Belle, and everyone in the household knew it. No matter how much she pined for him, he never took the hint, never gave her a chance. Some best friend he was.
“Now leave her be,” Cody finished, slumping back in his chair. “Caleb’s the best person to sit in there with her.”
One look at Pete and he could tell the other boy agreed.
