The Half Note
Introduction
It’s New York City in 1953 where jazz clubs are hubs of talent and community. Where the whiskey flows like ambrosia and the siren song of fresh talent burbles out of sultry clubs nightly. A young guy or gal could walk up on a stage in the right kind of joint and come out a legend. People from all over travel to the City in pursuit of something more. It takes a lot to cut it out here, though. You’ve got to have the talent to back yourself up. And if you really want to get anywhere in a hurry, then it’s all about who you know.
Plot
There’s plenty of clubs to be found in New York but the one where legends are born is none other than The Half Note, an institution within the community that’s been here for years. Many famous singers and comedians found their start here and rumor has it that the club’s owner still keeps in contact with every one.
Who are you? A dreaming young starlet hoping to break into Broadway by showing off your voice to the right ear. A dazzling singer who brought along a childhood friend to help you achieve your dreams. Maybe you’ve been here for years already seeing so many failed performers enter with stars in their eyes only for their hopes to be dashed. You might just be a service worker, a bartender or waitress. There’s no shame in working to keep a business running.
Whoever you are in this club that thrums jazz through its liquor filled veins, you’re in this world. Making your way towards your own goals and ambitions. And maybe—if you get lucky—you’ll finally get what you’ve always wanted.

Roles
The Headliner [TAKEN/MALE]– you’ve been here for at least a year and it’s not clear why. You’re the biggest draw with a voice that can rend hearts. People keep coming back to hear your classic rich voice nightly.
The Comedian [TAKEN/FEMALE]- you’re a bit untraditional being a female comedian but once people see your act they can’t deny your talent. You’ve been here for at least a few months and your fan base is growing.
The New Talent [TAKEN/Female] – You’ve never performed at a club like this before and you’ve travelled a long way to do it. You’ve got an amazing voice but is it enough to stand out amongst the other talent?
The Musician [TAKEN/Male] – Becoming famous was never your dream despite how much you may love your instrument. You were dragged out to New York by your best friend (The New Talent) in pursuit of a dream that was more hers than yours. How far will your support go?
The No Talent [TAKEN/Female] – Either you’re as untalented as they come or you haven’t found your ‘thing’ just yet. At least once a week the owner lets you perform and hopefully one of these days you’ll find what you’re good at. Or maybe you’ll just get the hint.
THE STAFF
The Bartender A [TAKEN/Male]– You’ve worked here at least 3 years and have seen performers come and go.
The Bartender B [TAKEN/Male] – You’re new on the scene with only a few months of experience at this club under your belt which means that you’re able to look at things with fresh eyes.
The Waitress [TAKEN/Female] – You’ve worked here at least 1 year in a job that was meant to be very temporary. No one knows your next moves or future ambitions aside from you.
