Fantasy The Golden Age (40's Superhero RP)

Kyd Jhesus

Unlicensed Doctor
Intro

"The Golden Age, That's what the new generation of superheroes deem it. We just called it the 40's, The first boom of Superheroes(and Villains) appeared around that time. The boom was Worldwide, but mostly in America, The cultural melting pot of the world. The spike in superpowered individuals was sometime before the beginning of the world war 2. I remember hearing about the terrifying things that came to light once the fighting was finally over. The Nazi War Machines, Super Soldiers, Death Camps and other atrocities committed by the Axis forces. America itself isn't excluded from these atrocities sadly, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, both means to end an already bloody war. It was a different time back then, No cellphones, internet or video games the kids seem to love so much. It was a simple time, even with men that could fly and rip metal apart like cardboard with their bare hands. Now I won't lie to you, At that point in time in America had its social problems, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and much more. Society wasn't so accepting back then, people were excepted to stay in their place. This was the Golden Age, The push that was needed to make a change. Today they look back on the heroes of yesterday and you're filled with a sense of hope as if anything was possible."

City
716.jpg

Geld City is where this story will start from. This city is the most technologically advanced city in America. Do not be surprised when seeing out of place like AC, Colored TV and other such minor things like robots. Geld is a very affluent city shown throughout the city, With that said Geld of course has it's slums. The Slums can range to Poor, broke down and completely horrendous as if these people never left the depression. This city has many farms and small town on route to it. This city is located east coast of America and has its own bay with boats from all around the world docked in it. Geld is located near the New Jersey Coast.(Think Atlantic city)

Setting is 1948

Name

Charity "Cherry" Rose Johnson

Alias
She introduces herself as Mercy when in costume. The rest of the time, her friends call her Cherry. Her brother just calls her doofus when he wants to get her attention.

Age
25, born on 8/4/1924

Gender
Female

Race
Although she has pale skin, she is categorized as "colored" by the law due to her Native American and African ancestors. She has a few freckles, a remnant of the Irish in her, and, if you believe her mother, she has some French blood too. So, all in all, mixed.

Height:
5'6" if she stands up straight

Sexuality
Bisexual, though she has too much on her plate to figure out what all that means

Personality
Cherry is a good soul, who truly wishes to make the world better. She has a strong moral compass and uses this to guide most of her actions. She sees very little gray area between good and bad in most cases, and thus believes that if you're not on her side then you're on the wrong side. If she thinks you're on her side, however, she'll waste no time in becoming your friend. She has an easy smile and a quick wit, and will often invite someone to have a meal on the house at the restaurant that in which she works.
She is a very determined sort of person, not letting people push her around or take advantage of her or her friends. When she feels threatened she can get aggressive, either with her words as Cherry or with her actions as Mercy. However, she is not so stubborn as to not know when to acquiesce. She knows that segregation and racism isn't something she can change, even with her powers, and treats the laws and separation with a resigned air, she's grown up with them and doesn't expect them to change soon. Instead she tries to direct her fire towards neighborhood bullies.
Although Cherry does truly have a good heart, she often uses sarcasm in daily interactions, even more so when confronting people she does not like. Except in the latter case, she does not intend to wound with her words, but can sometimes not see if she has hurt someone, thus requiring a verbal cue. However, the rest of the time Cherry is as good a friend as you can ask for.
When acting as Mercy, she finds its a little easier to act sassier, more sarcastic, less lady-like. She often tries to have a quip ready when stopping bad-guys, which betrays how much she thinks of her whole charade as Mercy as a big game. She hasn't gotten seriously hurt from it yet, and sometimes doesn't take the whole thing seriously enough. She enjoys helping people and is glad to have her powers to help her do that. She doesn't fully understand them, but she doesn't let that stop her from using them as best she knows how. She realizes that this might be a mistake in the long run, but has a tendency to jump into things head-first. She also often neglects to admit her mistakes, in particular when she has taken on too much. She is a very responsible and independent person, and thus does not like to ask anyone for help with either of the matters mentioned previously.

Interests
Singing
Helping others
Finding a skirt with decent pockets
Her family
Finding out her aunt's secret recipe for pumpkin pie

Powers
Her powers are biological. Her main power is that she can manipulate energy, using her body as a conduit. That includes heat and light, as well as kinetic energy. The main drawback to this is that, in accordance with the first law of thermodynamics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. She can stop a runaway railcar on the spot, but all that energy has to go somewhere. If there isn't anyone around, she'll often let the energy fly out behind her in the form of heat. If there are people around, however, she often absorbs the energy herself, vibrating in place or creating a great burst of light that often leaves people blind for a few moments. She can also create light and heat seemingly from her fingertips, but in reality she is turning the chemical energy in her body into the light and heat. This only works as long as she has energy in her body, however. If she is tired, she can absorb energy from other places and use it herself, though not too much, or she'll have to disperse of it in one of the methods described above. For this reason, she can sometimes be seen sticking her fingers in electric sockets or running her hands along electric fences. Since it is her body being used as the conduit, she cannot drain energy from other people unless in direct contact with them, and even then it is only to a very limited extent, usually just making people semi-sleepy.
However, if she uses her power too much she can start to become what she calls 'strung out', unable to think straight or sometimes even stand up straight. Once, when she far over-reached her capabilities, she slept for a full 36 hours afterwards.
Her other power is not as strong. She can, to an extent manipulate the pain a person feels. She believes this may be connected to her other power, but isn't sure how. Again, she has to be touching a person for this to work. When she worked in the Red Cross during the war, she often used this to lessen the dying soldiers' pain. However, recently she's discovered that she can also increase or even create pain, but she has tried to never use this aspect of her ability. Also, as far as she can tell, this only works on physical pain, not emotional.

Skills
She has basic self-defense knowledge, either self-taught or passed on from her brother during his training for the army. However, because of her powers if she's able to catch a punch or a kick being thrown at her, and is concentrating, she can dispel the kinetic energy and reduce the impact.
She is also a highly qualified nurse, able to handle anything from amputation to infections to wound closures. Her pain manipulation power contributes to this.
Her other biggest skill is her voice, though that can usually only be heard at the jazz club she sings at or when she is home.

Equipment
There's her superhero outfit, of course. Though she doesn't really have a real costume. Usually she just throws on her mask and coat over whatever she's wearing. In the hot summer months she just tries to make sure she isn't wearing anything identifying on her clothes.

il_570xN.878009514_8mdh.jpg
In her pockets of her coat, she often carries snacks, and occasionally odds and ends like twine or a screwdriver, but beyond that she doesn't really have any equipment.

History
Cherry is the oldest of five children. Three younger sisters, Faith, Hope, and Patience, and one younger brother, Charles Michael Johnson Jr. Their father survived WWI by being too young to participate, though much of her family went and came back shell-shocked or not at all. Her father worked at a local mechanic shop, her mother as a washerwoman at a local laundromat.
So, needless to say, she didn't have much time to be a true kid. She was always taking care of her younger siblings. Even though Charlie and Faith, the twins, were only a couple years younger, Cherry still shouldered most of the responsibility. She was a natural leader, a natural care-taker. Thus, when war broke out, it was an easy step for her to go from taking care of her family to taking care of wounded soldiers. She was good enough to be sent over to Europe, where she cared mostly for "colored" troops.
That is when she discovered her pain manipulation power. She supposes she might have always had it, as her siblings always stopped crying when she helped them with their scraped knees or tummyaches, but in the European Theatre is where she found out the true meaning of the word pain. That is where she got the alias she now uses, as dying soldiers would sometimes mistake her for the angel of mercy as she eased their passing with her power. She also used her power on the living, who soon picked up the nickname, until she was known not as Sister Charity but as Sister Mercy. They never suspected a supernatural power, they just suspected her charm, soothing voice, and laugh to be the thing making them better. Her superiors just thought the men were making it up because they liked being around a pretty face. Nevertheless, they often assigned her to men who were seriously injured or most likely to die.
Although they were close to the front lines, the hospital in which she worked always had plenty of procedures in place to keep everyone safe, like blackout curtains and regular drills. However, one night, the Germans were bombing the American military installations nearby, and one bomb went off target, striking the west wing of the hospital. Luckily, it was an underpopulated section of the hospital, but Cherry was there attending to a dying man. They assumed her dead, but she was dug out of the rubble three days later. Although shrapnel from the casing of the bomb was dug out of her side and her left arm was broken, she was far less hurt than someone who had had a bomb dropped on them should be. She was sent home to recuperate, and began to notice odd things happening, such as the lights flickering around her, or a fire sputtering out even though it had plenty of wood to burn. The final clue came when she was almost hit by a distracted driver. Although later bystanders remarked it was a miracle that the man had been able to stop as fast as he did, she knew the truth. She had felt it. She had reached out towards the car in an attempt to stop it, and felt the kinetic energy from the car traveling up one arm and out the other in the form of heat. Her youngest sister, Patience, who had been holding her hand, reported her hand getting very warm all of a sudden, having to let go of Cherry to avoid getting burned, but most people brushed this off as the imagination of a child.
She eventually returned to the Red Cross, although state-side this time, just as her brother turned 18 and was drafted for the war. Luckily, peace was called with Germany not a year later, so he came home with a some cool stories to tell and his life intact, although his leg would never be the same, often causing him have to use a cane to manage his limp.
After the war ended, she was unceremoniously let go from the Red Cross, forced to find employment elsewhere. She moved from her hometown of Durham, North Carolina, to Geld City, New Jersey. She lived with her aunt for a while, but finally moved into her own small flat closer to the jazz club she sings at. A year ago, she began using her powers to fight the crime in her neighborhood after catching a purse thief by grabbing his hand and heating it up till he dropped the purse. After finding a suitable mask (she would never hear the end of it if her aunt found out about this), she became Mercy.

Would you take a life, and why?
During her time as a nurse, Cherry often met men who begged for death instead of having to live another moment in pain. While her powers often allowed her to help those men, she knows that sometimes there are cases in which a person should be allowed to choose if they continue to live or not. If someone asked Cherry to help them, and there were no other options available to help said person, she would help them end their lives.
Also, if she believes a person is truly evil, and their death would be for the greater good, she would at least attempt to kill them.
When fighting, she fights mostly in self-defense, it is unlikely that she would ever kill someone by accident, but it could happen, especially if the person was trying to kill her.
However, that being said, none of these scenarios have ever occurred, so she does not yet know if she would have the strength to carry through with those actions.

Other
She picks up the odd shift as a waitress at her Aunt's restaurant, Shelley's Diner, during the week, but mainly works singing with the jazz band at the Lucky Cricket Club. In between those two she fights crime, and occasionally, sleeps.
Only her brother and youngest sister know about her powers and alter-ego.

Personality
Rees is an honest young man with a powerful sense of justice or how he would define it. He believes in protecting the weak and helping people when he can. When dealing with villains he gives them a chance to surrender before pummeling them into submission. He hates bullies in any form and along with that has an ego. Rees hates to fail in any form and is always trying to come out on top. He knows how to keep his cool or at least pretend too while in costume, out of costume he wears his emotions on his sleeve making him easy to read. He's blunt and makes his opinions know when able but like any person know when to stay quiet. Rees also ends to pity people even when shouldn't and is very forgiving. His most defining aspect is his determination and confidence in himself.

Interest
Comics
Cooking
Jazz

Power(s)
Biological - Superspeed - He is able currently able to travel up to 100 MPH. He is still human and can't run forever. He can stay at top speed 15 minutes before he's too tired to keep going.

Biological - Speed healing - This applies to from cuts to poison. He has to focus to do this since it isn't an innate ability. He would suffer a gun shot it would take about an hour or two to heal.

Skills
Boxing - He's able to hold his own again a small number of foes without using his Superspeed. His boxing skills come from his father teaching him the fundamentals at an early age.

Cooking - As a bus boy, he'd learned a thing or two about cooking.

Equipment
Brass Knuckles

History
Rees was born in Geld City as were his parents. He was raised in a predominantly colored part of Geld City in an apartment building. He wasn't dirt poor, but wouldn't be considered middle class even for colored standers. His parents were hard working and upstanding people. His father was one of the few black police officers and damn good at his job. Rees thinks he gets his determination from his Father. He served in Geld Police department until his death when Rees was 12. He and his partner had heard about a mafioso who routinely abuse his wife so they came by one day and 'taught' him a lesson. The backlash was unexpected and by next month Rees father was found in the river tied to a cinder block with his partner.

Ever since this day he wanted to emulate him. As expected he has a natural dislike for the mob and associates. When he was 15 his powers started to emerge. He first noticed one day was when he was late for school and had overslept. He had too many late already, but this time would have resulted in suspension and hell from his mother. As he ran he felt a tingle in his legs had a burst of speed resulting him running into a car door and going unconscious. He awoke in a hospital to his mother looking over him. He told her what happen but she wrote it off as a delusion and instead he was crossing the street without looking like an idiot.

Once he healed he tried testing his new found power. At first, it didn't work and he was believing it was all in his head until he remembered the tingle he felt. He imagined it in his legs and before he knew it he speeding around the neighborhood in short burst. He kept this a secret from his mother and everyone else not knowing what would happen to him. One night he was walking home spotted a mugger robbing a woman of her purse. He automatically sprung into action and under a minute had the mugger sleeping on concrete. He made sure the woman was alright before leaving. He made her promise to leave him out the police report.

After this, he devoted himself to being a hero. He is now 3 years into this and is pretty experienced, but is not well known in the hero community. He is the poor man's crime fighter and keeps the slums from getting worse. During the day Rees works as a bus boy at a local diner.

Would you take a life and why?
Rees would never do something so wrong. He holds himself above that and believe all superheroes should. He can't stand people who would lower themselves to such a thing.

Name
Navia Insley

Alias
Selene

Age
(12/25/1882)

Gender
Female

Race
European Caucasian (English/Irish)

Height:
5'5"

Weight:
Slim

Sexuality:
Heterosexual Conformist (i.e. in the closet)

Personality
Navia's a patriot of a country that doesn't remember her. A family woman, wife and mother, to a family that can't know she's alive. In many ways, Navia's personality is defined by loss as much as by her successes.

Navia is a cultured, well-spoken woman with a dry sense of humor and an interest in people. She's polite, interested, interesting and an excellent conversationalist. She's lived long enough that little surprises her so the few things that do fascinate her. Navia's mistrustful of Germans but fond of Americans, even if she finds the racial attitudes of the 1940s to be a bit backward (and reminiscent of the Germans they'd both spent so much time, money and lives fighting).

Navia is religious (a member of the Church of England). She's also hardened by war and able to kill someone she thinks of as an enemy without hesitation or a quiver of conscience.

Interests
Artwork (A real enthusiast for Monet and French Impressionism)
Music (Affects to enjoy Claude Debussy but secretly prefers Duke Ellington)
People-watching (Their lives are so much more interesting than her own)

Powers:
Nigh-Perfect: Navia enjoys nearly perfect health and vitality. She doesn't get tired or sleep, get sick, get sore or even get out of breath. She's as strong as a man, faster than a bicycle and doesn't feel pain or bruise. She's not bullet proof (or even knife proof) but if she chooses to sleep, she unfailingly slumbers in a coma until the next sunset at which point she wakens restored. Conveniently, she hasn't gained a pound since she was eighteen.
Immortal?: As near as she can tell, Navia stopped aging around the turn of the century. She's 66 years old but looks to be in her twenties or thirties. Even she doesn't know how long she'll actually live (or why).
Anonymous: When she concentrates, Navia becomes very difficult to notice or remember. People unconsciously avoid her on the street, cashiers ignore her if she rifles through their tills and a home owner doesn't bat an eye if she stops by and claims their bed for the night. Watchful, attentive people and positions (like guards, police, detectives and the like) as well as unusual situations (like approaching a guarded vault or approaching the President) are more likely to notice her. She can consciously strengthen the effect if she makes eye contact with someone and offers a (im)plausible explanation for being there but it's not a foolproof power so she rarely employs it in risky situations unless absolutely necessary.

Skills
Nurse - She's remarkably accomplished medically, having ministered to the wounded as a VAT during the Great War.
Espionage - Having worked for MI6 during the Second World War, Navia's a practiced eavesdropper, sneak, lockpick and linguist (she speaks German, Italian and Russian).
Self-Defense - Her minimal hand-to-hand consists mostly of how to break holds and evade blows. She's a good shot, though, particularly with Webley Revolver.

Equipment
A Webley Revolver
A sizable purse (which includes useful things like lockpicks and a first aid kit)

History
Born in Brighton, England, Navia grew up the charming and favored daughter with an industrialist knighted for his contributions to the Empire for a father and a mother who was a Baron's daughter herself. She grew up knowing privilege and expectation and was a grave disappointment to her parents when she fell in love with and married Lieutenant Harry Insley in 1901. She was content to be a wife and mother, raising three sons and a daughter while her husband rose in the ranks.

When the Great War broke out in 1914, Navia joined the VAD and did her bit for King George and country. She began to realize how little she was like other women when she never grew tired and was able to carry wounded men by herself. When she realized she could pass without notice, Navia began a regular practice of rescuing the wounded from the hottest battlefield conditions, trusting that no one would target her. An accidental encounter with mustard gas nearly killed her and she passed out, coughing up blood and her lungs, only to wake at sunset completely healthy once more. That's when she realized she wasn't like anyone she'd ever heard of before.

The years between the World Wars were difficult ones, for Navia realized as her children became adults and her beloved Harry grew to retirement age, she wasn't aging whatsoever. At last, around 1935, Navia faked her own death and disappeared from her life. Instead, she enlisted with MI6 after Hitler announced his intention to rearm Germany.

The years of the Second World War were good years for Navia. She found herself working with other super-powered individuals for the first time and finally no longer felt alone. Concealing her true age, Navia instead learned the arts of espionage, studied languages and became a spy working in partnership with several British and American superhero teams. MI6 gave her the code name "Selene" and Navia's ability to walk in and out of classified areas to gather intelligence became critical to planning super-powered war operations.

The war came to an end at last, leaving Navia with a devastated country and an ample family she couldn't avoid seeing going on with life without her. Pained by all she'd lost, Navia accepted an invitation by an American superhero to move to the United States and start over. In the short years since, Navia's drifted from city to city, assisting the friends she'd made overseas fighting the Nazis in fighting crime and supervillains back home instead.

At last, she's stopped in Geld City to marvel at the amazing American spirit of innovation. Perhaps in this wonderland of invention, she'll be able to reinvent herself as well and find new purpose in a world that's so rapidly outgrown the woman she's used to being.

Would you take a life and why?
Absolutely. Without question or hesitation. Navia was timid in avoiding the fight during the Great War and men died anyway, so many soldiers who'd never go home again. During the Second World War, she found that killing a high-ranking German or Italian officer could swing a decisive victory, saving the lives of men on both sides of the conflict who'd otherwise perish in battle. Having been a spy as well as experiencing two World Wars, Navia's far too pragmatic to value the life of someone who doesn't value life. Though she's certainly wise and perceptive enough to spot the scruples of her allies and respect those scruples...at least as long as they're witnesses.
