|| Larken || On a Cruiser to Ilum ||

It was a time of darkness, truly. If ever there had been a period in her life where she didn’t want to exist more than the present, she didn’t remember it, and the constant shuffle of the Republic
Fleet’s occupants surely wasn’t helping her remember.
She knew she was annoying him - she knew her dislike of him was reciprocated in full - but she must have really pushed the wrong button; there was no other plausible explanation for why she
was being loaded onto a Consular Cruiser alongside a handful of the 501st. With another Jedi Master assigned as her mentor for the day, no less. Her name was Saerina. They hadn’t spoken yet, but she had seen the conversation between him and her happen - she had a vague idea of what must have been said; she was a poor excuse for a student with an ‘attitude problem’.
She watched Obi-Wan exit the launch bay with Anakin at his side. Anakin and the rest of the 501st wouldn’t be leaving for Gyndine until later in the day; the extra-long trip her Cruiser was
assigned had been created specifically so her and Saerina could be dropped off at Ilum. Obi-Wan had said something about making a lightsaber - she hadn’t paid much attention at the time, and she was much too preoccupied watching him leave the bay to try and remember. He and Anakin appeared to be discussing something important (which very well could’ve been - and most likely was - something completely useless). She noticed that they didn’t even glance back in her direction once she was on board.
Not that she cared.
She noticed Saerina making her way over to the window she was looking out of as they took off; the beauty of space would never cease to amaze her, but she tore her eyes away to make eye
contact with Saerina for a moment - not to greet her with a friendly smile, just to examine, just to make it known that her slowly-approaching presence had been noticed - before going back to admiring the stars.

Few words had been exchanged about this young Padawan, but that didn't matter much; Saerina had picked up quite a few ideas from the unspoken tension between her and Master Kenobi. She could read the tiredness in his eyes, the hopelessness, as if he had nearly given up hope already. That came as a surprise for a few reasons. One, Larken had not been Kenobi's Padawan for long. Two, Obi-Wan spent ten years training Anakin Skywalker, a young Jedi notorious for his stubbornness and high levels of energy. One would think that Master Obi-Wan could handle just about anyone the Council could throw at him.

Saerina suspected Obi-Wan had taken on a new Padawan too soon. Not given himself enough time to "recover" from Anakin. But, that wasn't any of her business.

Regardless, she was the one they decided should take Larken out to build her first lightsaber. A special occasion, for sure- and normally an experience that a Master would never miss. Saerina only hoped she was suitable for the task. There was a small part of her- or perhaps not so small- that wanted to stay out of this Master-Padawan drama. But she had no choice.

Turning her attention to the Padawan, Saerina quickly discerned chaos and a great deal of tension in the young girl's spirit. The Force couldn't tell Saerina what Larken was exactly thinking or feeling, but it gave her a feel for her energy, which was all she needed to know.

The ship soared past a rather colorful star cluster. As Saerina stared at it, studying the colors and patterns, she noticed that Larken, too, was staring intensely out the window. Whether it was appreciation for the scenery, or simply trying to avoid eye contact, there was no way of knowing.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" she remarked. "I never get tired of seeing the stars and planets from afar like this. It's amazing how small they can look." There was a pause before she smiled at Larken and hoped for some sort of response. "I don't believe we've been introduced. I'm Saerina Avrikana."

Anakin didn't envy Obi-Wan's situation. Not one bit.

The mere idea of having a Padawan sounded daunting, especially since he was getting the feeling that the Council would spring one on him soon. Technically, he was young enough to still be a Padawan himself- but with the war, everything was changing. More Jedi Knights were needed than ever before, and these new Padawans needed to learn how to hold their own on the battlefield.

And having a Padawan who had no desire to learn at all? Who was full of contempt? Anakin was aware of the trouble he had caused for Obi-Wan in the past, but at least he had always wanted to become a Jedi. To become better.

"Master," he said, "if you can't handle her after this amount of time, what makes you think that this Saerina person can?"

It was a blunt and borderline rude question, but Anakin felt it was fair to ask. Saerina had never even had a Padawan and was far less experienced as a Jedi than Obi-Wan was. Whatever the reason, he was glad he wasn't the one who had to take Larken on a little field trip.

At least there was a battle with the Separatists to distract them. Anakin was aware that Obi-Wan wasn't normally the type to consider a battle to be a good distraction, but perhaps these times were making him desperate.

As they headed back inside, Mace Windu approached them with a group of clones from the 501st, probably getting ready to debrief them about the mission. The Jedi Master nodded at Obi-Wan but regarded Anakin with a colder gaze. Anakin glared back.

"We just received some new reports regarding your mission on Gyndine," Master Windu explained, switching on a holomap which projected an image of the planet. "According to our clone intelligence, the Separatists plan on sending more troops than we had originally anticipated. You might want to consider bringing more of your troops as well."

Larken knew who Saerina Avrikana was; Obi-Wan had given her a run-down the other day, and then again later on that same day, and then one more time before he had dropped her off minutes ago. Saerina was a Jedi Knight, complete with everything that came along with earning such a title: status, unwavering loyalty towards and gratitude for the Order and a good-natured demeanor that Larken was asked to reciprocate in full.

“-and, at the very least, I only ask that you try to be kind.” Obi-Wan finished.

All Larken could bring herself to do was look at him in response; their weary facial expressions portrayed how impossible they both knew that request would be for her to fulfill. Before she could bring herself to say something, however, Saerina walked down the Cruiser’s entrance ramp. Larken’s retort died on her tongue as the Jedi Knight began greeting Obi-Wan.

“Larken Branton.” she responded to Saerina’s introduction, knowing full-well it was unnecessary, but she could play along if formalities would make the trip easier. Besides, Saerina hadn’t done anything wrong...yet.

Larken would not conform - she would not give in to the constant pressure to be the ideal padawan everyone wanted her to be. She didn’t belong in the Order. She wasn’t meant to be a Jedi, and if the responses to her behavior she’d received during (what were meant to be) training sessions and informational classes were any indication, she would surely have Saerina telling her she was ‘wasting potential’ by the end of the day.

It had been a rough few months, to say the least.

Between Anakin and Larken’s antics, Obi-Wan barely had time to breathe, and that didn’t even begin taking the war into account. Jedi fighting - certainly two words he never would’ve imagined being used together so often in his days as a padawan, and especially didn’t like hearing now that it was reality, but nowadays barely phased him. He was sure sending Larken to build her LightSaber alongside another mentor hadn’t gone unnoticed by the other Jedi Masters (helping Anakin build his first one had been one of the proudest moments of his life), but they were kind enough not to bring it up in conversation.

Larken refused to try during training or show any interest in becoming a Jedi at all, so much so that he had brought up his concerns to the Council whenever they would ask; he had made it clear repeatedly that he believed Larken wasn’t fit to be a Jedi. It hadn’t escaped his notice that they seemed continuously adamant she stay, however, and he couldn’t deny that the Force heavily gravitated towards her. It was starting to seem that the Council would never budge, and as a result Obi-Wan had resigned to keeping his thoughts on Larken between himself and Anakin as of late (which, admittedly, wasn't his best idea considering Yoda had spoken to him before about whether Anakin was ready to take on a padawan - he really shouldn't be hearing about his struggles with Larken, but he found himself not caring much when Larken had him driven up a wall).

‘As of late’ had been an almost-torturous month, and it was Anakin’s suggestion to ask to have her mentor switched that gave him the idea to send her with Master Savrikana for a day or two. After all, he knew he wasn’t perfect; maybe his teaching style didn’t work for Larken, and maybe her could-be success with Saerina would be enough to convince the Council to relieve him of his mentorship.

“If we’re not needed anywhere else, I’m more than willing to offer my legion’s assistance.” Obi-Wan responded to Mace, hoping that his offer would be accepted. Being able to fully forget about his troubles with Larken for a bit would be extremely welcomed, even if it did mean being involved in another battle.

Saerina nodded and smiled, and waited a moment to see if the Padawan would volunteer any more information. But, unsurprisingly, she didn't. She didn't even contribute to the conversation about the view at all, seemingly disregarding Saerina's attempt to be friendly.

"If you have any questions about the trip, I will be in the cockpit." Saerina nodded politely to the Padawan and wandered up to the cockpit. However much the younger girl did or didn't want to interact, that was up to her. Saerina was simply here to teach her how to build a lightsaber.

Meanwhile, she decided to use this time to gather her thoughts and meditate before embarking on the task ahead. Even though there were some crew members milling around the cockpit, it was still Saerina's favorite place to be. Not because she was so much of a flyer, but because she liked the view offered by the cockpit. Watching the stars and the beauty of the galaxy helped her connect with the Force, the very thing that bound all the elements of the universe together.

Settling into a chair, she closed her eyes and concentrated on the Force, and the peace and clarity it offered. She would need all the patience and understanding she could get.

Anakin watched hopefully as Obi-Wan conversed with Master Windu about the mission. If the recent reports from the troops on Gyndine were true, having the 212th along would certainly be helpful. Thankfully, Windu did seem to agree with Obi-Wan and gave him permission to bring the 212th.

"I suggest you both assemble your troops and brief them on the mission," Windu said, his voice cool and stoic as usual. "Then bring them to Gyndine and contact us when you get there. May the Force be with you."

Anakin and Obi-Wan bowed politely and both headed off towards the troops' quarters. Anakin was already studying a holomap of the area of the battle, trying to decide where to best position his troops and where the Separatists might be. However, he didn't want to plan too much. There were so many variables in a situation like this, it was impossible to plan every detail- and it was easier, especially as a Jedi, to rely on the Force and react to the situation once there.

But before they could even get to the troops, Obi-Wan received a transmission on his comlink. It turned out to be Master Ki-Adi Mundi, another one of the higher-ups on the Jedi Council, telling him that he was needed on urgent Council business. He wouldn't say what it was, exactly- typical.

Anakin glanced over at his former Master, trying to read his expression. This couldn't have been a very happy turn of events for him. "Do you think you're going to go back to the Council, Master? What about your troops, should I take them anyway?"
