Welcome to the Surreal Estate character thread! Please feel free to post your characters here, and even placeholders if that's something you'd like to do. Rules will be reiterated below along with the roles and the character sheet set up. If you need any assistance, please let me know! My DMs are always open.

Sheets due on the 17th!

  • RULE 01. Members should be able to write around at least 1 paragraph; there is no maximum, but please be able to provide some details for other writers to go off of! This is a quality-over-quantity sort of group.

RULE 02. There is no posting order, but players are expected to post at least once a week, preferably more. If you can't, please just let me know; life happens and I'll always be understanding about it. This rule is just to keep the group running smoothly and avoid stalling due to ghosting.

RULE 03. Be polite OOC and engage with other players; I want this to be a fun experience in and out of character! While characters can be rude to each other, players shouldn't be.

RULE 04. This is not first come first serve and I will be choosing characters based on how well they fit the roleplay. This is not meant to stress anyone out! Its simply to make sure the group vibes well. Just because I reject an OC at first doesn't mean you can't ask me how to adjust your sheet to better fit the group. Players can even suggest roles and I will let them know if that works for the RP; as of this time, despite having some roles set, there is no player # cap.

RULE 05. FCs and descriptions are accepted; we accept all FC types!

RULE 06. Have fun, above all, because that's why we're here

the priest

emily finchum

VISAGE
NAME: father grover waycott
NICKNAMES: used to be 'father', but if you call him that nowadays he might start kicking things
AGE: 39
GENDER: cis-male (he/him)
ORIENTATION: gay
ROLE: the (ex)priest

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: Charlie Day
BODY MODS/SCARS: a small moth tattoo on his inner right wrist
STYLE: he wears a lot of flannels with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow, unbuttoned so whatever graphic t-shirt he's wearing that day can be seen underneath. his shirt tends to be tucked into jeans and most of the time he can be found wearing sneakers. in the colder months, he wears a black leather jacket. he wears a utility belt to work, but instead of tools, it's 'priest gear' as he likes to call it- pocket bible, holy water, a crucifix, salt, the works (along with some snacks and stuff). he could have all that in a bag, but thinks that the belt is cooler. he has glasses, but only really wears them when he has to read. he still has his old priesthood outfit; he wears it when he's gotta really charm the socks off someone religious.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Former parishioners at Grover's church would call him a trusting, kind, optimistic and selfless person. Nowadays, he really only retains two of those qualities; he's become extremely pessimistic and slow to fully trust others. He's the sort of person that insists on taking on important jobs himself and overseeing all details of an assignment. He obsessively checks and double checks things, leaving nothing to chance. Absolutely the sort of person who plans everything down to the second.

When it comes to dangerous situations, he likes to have an eye on people at all times. Splitting up? Not really his thing. If someone is out of his line of sight, its probable he'll have a bit of an anxiety attack over it. He's very much a prepare for the worst, possibly hope for the best sort of guy. Even outside of dangerous scenarios, he can be a little clingy.

Despite being a deeply mistrusting person, he is kind as well and loyal once he gets over himself and sees the good in certain people. He presents himself as a jokester, often cracking jokes and getting a good bit going when he deems it appropriate. He likes to cheer people up even if he's freaking out himself, and offers a listening ear to any that need it- after all, he had plenty of practice running reconciliation. Gives pretty good advice when asked.

FEARS: Moths, parasites, contaminated food
HOBBIES: Embroidery, art (varied types, but mostly sketches and watercolor), cooking, cleaning (yes, he considers that a hobby)
HABITS: When nervous, he has a lighter that he messes with. He also intends to unintentionally invade the personal space of people he likes whenever they're around, often throwing an arm around their shoulder, messing with hair, etc. When zoning out, he has a bad habit of gnawing on things he probably shouldn't (erasers, rubber of any sort, his finger, etc)

DRIVE: Grover is driven by a need to not repeat past mistakes and to keep the people around him safe from threats both of this world and the next.
PUBLIC IMAGE: He can come off as a little childish, wearing graphic tees of various things he likes along with the jokes he can often be found cracking. Overall, though, a friendly, inviting person to most, even if he's cagey about personal details about himself; its likely that only one or two people actually know where he lives or even any small details about his past other than the fact he was a priest.
GROWTH: Can learn to trust people and also realize that when things go wrong, it isn't always his fault.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY: Grover has been a part of the agency since he was approached 10 years ago about a position with them.

He'd freshly removed himself from the church. No one knew much about it; all the information available to the public was that a large fire broke out in the building during one of his masses and he was one of the only survivors. The fire seemed to be intentional, with how quickly it spread and the exits found to be blocked to lock everyone inside; likely, if emergency services hadn't arrived at the time they had, there wouldn't have been anyone who got out. When interviewed about the incident, Grover didn't say much, and it was chalked up to trauma.

He left the church right after that, moving on to be a cashier at a local grocery store of all things. When first approached about the new job, he said no. The second time he was approached? Also a no. Same went for the third and fourth. However, after about a week, he ended up coming to the office of the agency and finally accepting the job. He's been there since, acting as the resident priest for the group. He does cleansings, blessings, research, interviews, basically whatever hands-on work he can reason as being within bounds. Despite being there for such a long time, he doesn't seem to be actually very close with many of his coworkers (AN: willing to work out close relationships with 1 to 2 people for him for the start of the RP!).

tidbits

- Often refers to himself leaving the church as him divorcing Jesus Christ. He does insist they're still on good terms, though.

- Was a choir boy in his youth. He's embarrassed by it.

- Has two pet White's Tree Frogs, Poliwag (Polly) and Tympole (Timmy). They're his sweet little babies and he'd probably die for them.

- Likes country music. But, like, the COOL country music, not stadium country. He likes to rock out to Country Roads whenever he takes a road trip, insisting its good luck to play it while on a ride.

- Doesn't eat fast food. Doesn't eat out. He only eats stuff he makes himself; he's even gone as far as to learn to bake his own bread.

- Biggest fan of face masks and moisturizer and general self care products. Has like a Lowes moving crate of them in his apartment he breaks out when he's having a tough night.

- Likes to give different types of ghosts and stuff silly names. One, categorizing them helps. Two, it makes them easier to handle mentally.

- Biggest sweet tooth on the planet earth. Giving him sweet stuff will instantly make him warm up a bit more to you.

- Wears a cross ring on his right hand; it was a gift from a parishioner who passed away in the fire and even if his faith is shaky at times, he doesn't take it off.

- About two years after leaving the church, he started dating apps. Hasn't gotten anything from them yet; its become sort of a mindless habit to swipe through them in his spare time.

the lawyer
scroll.

the fairy market
maggie stiefvater

VISAGE
NAME: devin murphy
NICKNAMES: dev, murph
AGE: 32
GENDER: trans masc (he/him)
ORIENTATION: bi ace
ROLE: the lawyer

APPEARANCE
DESCRIPTION: Devin is the quintessential baby faced trans masc. He's small and squirrley, and you'd be forgiven for thinking he's an undergrad instead of in his 30s. He's got a cute little button nose, lots of freckles and dark hair that he's usually done something fussy with to make it look carelessly ruffled.

He's usually also wearing a nice cologne; the smell of tonka bean and lavender might linger after him.

BODY MODS/SCARS: A tattoo of the Irish word for courage in ogham on his inner left forearm and a rat king on his left shoulder blade. He also has top surgery scars.

STYLE: Dirtbag prep. You've seen what those New England Ivy League kids wear, and well, Devin's doing it wrong, but on purpose. Converse and suits, ties with jeans. If you ask him about it he's got a twenty minute TED talk on the history of Prep fashion as a subversive subculture loaded and ready to go, but the important thing is that, like everything else he does, Devin's fashion choices are a carefully thought out performance piece.

Also, he has to be the most fuckable person at the grocery store. You know how it is.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Cocky, charismatic, and certain that he’s the most clever person in any room, Devin can be incredibly abrasive. He has a not undeserved reputation for being an asshole, which he'll cheerfully admit to, but he's definitely not out to hurt anyone who hasn't hurt him first--he's just self-absorbed and a little careless when it comes to other people's feelings, though he's fiercely protective of anyone he considers his. Has the air of someone playing 3D chess at all times. You'd think he's never met a consequence once in his life.

FEARS: Devin is a self-professed coward, but this is mostly so that nobody expects anything of him. He is deeply afraid of failure--both failing himself and failing to live up to the expectations that other people have for him. Also not so great with heights.

HOBBIES: Reading, writing, drawing and painting (oils are his favorite, though he does watercolors more often), horseback riding, target shooting.

HABITS: He usually wears multiple rings and tends to play with them when he's thinking. He also talks with his hands.

DRIVE: More than anything else, Devin can't stand to be bored.

PUBLIC IMAGE: Most people in the general Boston area know of him because of his family. In his general professional sphere other property lawyers are never really pleased to find themselves having to deal with him simply because he's a smug, nitpicky bastard.

GROWTH: He could stand to learn some humility and maybe to chill out a little.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY: Devin is from a big Irish Catholic family that's been deeply entwined in Boston politics for generations. He grew up with two older siblings and one younger sibling in a loud, chaotic, and extremely busy home, where his father was a local politician and his mother was an interior designer. Devin acquired a bachelor's degree in art history before going to law school, following both of his older siblings. However, while they went into defense law Devin found property law far more interesting, especially because there are few things he likes more than writing incredibly precise contracts. He worked for several years out of law school with a big commercial real estate company before deciding that if he had to deal with another idiot from a billion-dollar company he might push them out 50th story window. He's been with Ackehurst Real Estate for about five years now and is having such a good time.

tidbits

+Genuinely loves his job. Few things bring him more joy than trapping someone in impenetrable legalese like some kind of fucked up fairy. Has passed the bar in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire.

+Owns a Connemara pony named Trick that he does three-phase eventing and foxhunting with. Trick is in a half-lease with a Pony Club student to keep him from doing too many crimes when Devin is too busy to ride.

+His coffee order is an iced red eye made with brown sugar and whole milk.

+Impenetrably thick Boston accent. Says things like packie and clickah. The word "lobster" doesn't have an r in it but the word "idea" does.

+A trust fund baby who delights in doing fun rich people things like tipping waiters 100% and buying his friends expensive presents. You still probably want to strangle him for the $500 riding boots covered in mud that he's wearing in a gross field with you.

+His mom signed all his siblings up for Irish language classes as kids, and Devin has kept up with it enough to be conversational.

+Raised Catholic, and went to private Catholic schools. Still calls himself Catholic even though he hasn't set foot in a church outside of Christmas and Easter in ten years. Claims this is because he "frightens the Pope with his trans masc swag".

+Typically has a gun in his car when he has to go on site to any of the houses. It's not anything in the houses, it's the neighbor with the Confederate flag he's worried about.

+Has a collection of tarot cards mostly for the art, but does know how to do a reading.

+Believes that magic isn't real except when it is. Hope that helps!

the office manager

Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)
Jim Croce

VISAGE
NAME: Laurence R. Hardcastle
NICKNAMES: Laurie, Lou
AGE: 48
GENDER: Cis-Male, He/Him
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
ROLE: The Office Manager

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: Jason Isaacs
BODY MODS/SCARS: Laurence has a series of navy tattoos from his time in service, remnants of a disillusioned youth spanning the nature of his chest and arms.
CLOTHING STYLE: The art of business-casual is Laurence’s bread and butter, never truly forming his own personal sense of fashion. Early enlistment to the navy provided the idea that utility was of utmost priority, giving a young man either a sense of formality or athletic wear and little else. As such, his suit is practically second skin, either rumpled or freshly ironed, with a singular distinction made between work hours and out-of-work hours—a tie and his undone top button. Never to be found without a good pair of cufflinks or dab of woody cologne.

PSYCHE

personality

By all accounts, Laurence is jaded and easily irritated; a man prone to letting his anger get the better of him, if not for the therapy and management that has since toned down his outbursts into a passive-aggressive preference and a near-mauled stress ball having the life squeezed out of it.

Vindictively stubborn though prone to melancholy, Hardcastle knows he wouldn’t be alive without holding a grudge. Whether it’s his ex-wife or troublesome customer, he remarks it’s something to aim for in the bureaucratic hell-basket of his ongoing position. Swearing like a sailor out of earshot, running from one side of the office to the other, and looking entirely dishevelled by the end of the day, he hasn’t the time to rest. For Laurence, there’s always something going on—and he won’t take the time to sit down unless he’s assured it’s worth the intrusive thoughts.

What ought to surprise most people, is the man's poetic licence outside of his triathlon excuses for avoiding sitting home alone; it's easy to forget Laurence was an English graduate, still holding great regard for art, cinema, and literature.

However, Laurence expresses himself as a man who prefers actions to words. He’ll never have the nerve to say what he means, but buying a round of drinks for the company gets the idea across. As for what the Ackehurst Estates peddle in terms of hauntings and unideal homes begging for renovation, it wouldn’t go too far in saying Hardcastle leans on the behalf of skeptic with a navy man's superstitions, in an effort to avoid pinning everything on phantoms rather than the human mind’s inclination to go haywire under stress.

habits

Pacing back and forth until he's run circles around himself, unknowingly clenching his teeth, remaining physically tense throughout any stressful event, muttering to himself and often having conversations with the photocopier.

fears

Loss of his children; absolute silence; faces in dark windows; the drip of a leak no one can find; vehement dislike of clowns, mimes, mannequins and living statues.

hobbies

Triathlon training, 70s avant garde films, reading books for the explicit chance to write scathing reviews, art galleries and standing just a half-step too close to the masterpieces to make security anxious.

drive

Focusing his energy into the company to lift them further in terms of success—even if that means running himself ragged over it. Laurence has always needed something to put his obsessive spirits into, nowso more than ever whilst his children are flying the nest after what remains a broken upbringing. Struggling with his identity after following his father’s footsteps, the navy’s, the expectations and promotions, failing to assimilate into the nuclear ideal of white picket fences; Laurence is searching to be something other than part of the rat race.

public image

Ex-British forces, Laurence’s image is a highly-strung patriarch with a predictable sense of self-righteous anger. Efficient at his work closing contracts and scoping potential locations, Hardcastle’s sharp eyes are hard to escape—the man rarely sleeps, exacerbating his inclination to tirades, failing anger management sessions, and the nicely rounded dose of superstition passed down in old navy tales. Nevertheless he cares for his coworkers and employees, preferring small acts of service to apologies or thank-yous, as much as he refuses not to be seen as a softie.

growth

To redefine who he is as a person, affirm his accomplishments, and embrace the past as something he can’t change. Laurence’s struggles with anger are complex, his worth as a father, a place in the world which has become unrecognisable from his youth, and building a sense of community. Companionship was never the end-all.

tidbits

↠ Laurence is adept at fixing almost anything that has wires or moving parts; one of his lesser hobbies is refurbishing radios and small appliances.
↠ Whilst devoted to training for Triathlons, of which he’s never won but enjoys the mental fortitude required, the Manager conceals the odd-cigarette break here and there.
↠ Detests things too sweet as the sugar gives him a headache, his tastes lean toward bittersweet.
↠ As all men entering middle age, Hardcastle’s specific fixation on history is due to Sharpe’s Rifles and loves everything pertaining to either Wellington or Napoleon.
↠ Keeps a growing post-it note list of people's preferences for the office, alongside their names and birthdays.
↠ His preferred music choice is a Blondie CD Mix he’s had since 2004.
↠ Owner of a large ginger tom cat called Mademoiselle after mistaking him for female; the name stuck.
↠ Has a picture of both his children which sits proudly on Laurence’s desk, though the frame has become worn, being moved from place to place.
↠ Though a relative foreigner, Hardcastle has contacts nigh everywhere due to his time agency hopping and employment in the Ministry of Defence. Such customers are high value, high risk, and well-worth the pay.
↠ Retains his old wedding ring on a chain around his neck—Laurence finds himself sentimental of it, but keeps it hidden and often lies it was from a long-dead family member if discovered.

BACKSTORY
Liverpool, 1974, Laurence was born amidst declining British industry and the short-lived three-day week. Rocked by frequent power-cuts, that baby boy swaddled in knitted blankets by the hospital generators was a mistake that tested traditional values. His mother and father were estate brats, working class with roots in navy service from one father to the next until they could afford some decent comforts out of the old pensions, though their fooling around was summed up by a hurried wedding and the sudden weight of responsibility. Named after his father’s favourite Rex Harrison movie, Laurence of Arabia, little Laurie proved as much an intrepid adventurer as his inspiration. Nothing was out of his reach; walking as soon as he had the balance and speaking soon after he’d grasped his first word.

Edward Hardcastle joined the navy, a mere boy of seventeen, seeking stable work to support his young wife and child. A distant figure in his dress uniform who appeared and disappeared with his glowing tan, telling tall tales of the Suez and Gibraltar. Misfortune seeks the brave, nonetheless, and the Falklands called in April 1982 just after Edward’s twenty-fifth birthday. Deployed on the HMS Sheffield, halfway across the globe, he'd never be the same man again. The Sheffield was hit on its starboard, killing twenty men and wounding twenty-six.

The next they saw of him, Edward was burned but alive. A miracle to still be standing, but he’d never forget the smell, nor the sounds, the fizzle and shrieking of men. The astounding crash and flames which licked his marred skin. To say he was dogged by guilt would understate how consumed he was by it, how he woke up in cold sweats and drifted—from all that he knew, into a place his wife and son could not follow. 1985, Edward Hardcastle was found dead by eleven-year-old Laurence. Hanging in the garage.

It was the first time in his young mind he believed a place could be haunted by the actions performed there; for they never went inside that cold, concrete place again.

He and his mother moved into his grandparent’s home soon after, a young widow now struggling to correct the path which had deviated so far from the ideal complacent family life. Laurence was troublesome, bright yet determined to get in and out of trouble as if it came with every natural inclination. His grandfather set him right with a paternal influence now sorely missed, encouraging his flair for academics and sciences until Laurence could set off for university with a scholarship under his belt.

Staying close to home, he took a degree in English Literature, earning a bachelors and a dose of laddish confidence. First loves, first real loves that weren’t childish hand-wringing, and parties which left you dead on your feet. They were all convinced they had the capacity to be great poets or authors of impressive conviction, throats raw with cigarette smoke and stolen kisses in lounging study groups.

Out of all his years, Laurence used to say he hadn’t known love until those months in Rome, 1994. A hitch-hiking holiday with University friends encountered a similar group of Americans celebrating their graduation—the first time he met Joanna. Joanna the name which rattled his skull and stuck his hair on end. One can come to understand how a muse easily alters every sense of creativity, every ounce of focus, reaffirming the ideal of love, no matter its fleeting worth. For the months they were in Rome, Laurence and Joanna were inseparable to the rolled eyes and mutterings of their friends. Doomed by pure magnetism.

The summer wasn’t meant to last, however, when it came time to return to their prospective countries. Contact easily severed, a missed link, one face in the sea of billions. A good memory to recall, but gently put out of his mind.

Nursing the loss, among figuring what it was he wanted to accomplish, Laurence pursued the path his father took in a clear move of honouring the senior Hardcastle by applying for the navy—but his mother wept, grandfather shouted, and his grandmother sat quiet with a photo of a man long-dead. The rift between them was eventually healed after returning home from basic training, opting for a position with on-board communications.

Climbing rank and importance, a tan from Gibraltar—tales of far-off places, it was hard to believe Laurence wasn’t Edward himself returned to try his hand again.

Five years following meeting Joanna in Rome, Laurence encountered her again. By chance, decidedly fate, or coincidence if one adhered to the world being smaller than initially believed, the American girl from August showed her face in a Liverpool pub—he didn’t want to go, admittedly, dragged by a friend to enjoy their leave from the sea whilst they had it, but in seeing her again it sparked that desperate itch; hazy memories and balmy sunsets, warm nights and bare skin. If there was ever electricity drawn to a point, or a current that yanked on the human drive to yearn, it lingered in the air between them with the scent of Shakespeare’s tragedies.

They fell into routine, whilst Joanna was studying abroad, he’d return back and forth from deployment and training, weekends away from the barracks, until it moulded into something serious. They rented a place together, he worked on his communications qualifications, she’d been studying hard—he liked watching her paint in the odd hours of the morning, when the dreary English coast turned grey and drizzled, making dawn and night indistinguishable save for the scent of petrichor and cheap cigarettes. Of course, she eventually had to leave, but Laurence always believed it’d be for a short while. She’d come back to him, just as she had the first time. Was it arrogance? Or wilful thinking?

But as stories go, this one became forever altered in a mistake—one his own parents made, that he now made, upon the discussion that Joanna was pregnant. He was scared, angry perhaps that he had no father to ask for advice, happy that he’d do his best to be a present figure. Hopeful, that a future where they could take on anything together was a future worth risking for.

Joanna left to sort out her outstanding business in the US, whilst Laurence turned his mind toward reaching better paid positions—something more clerical and home based, that he began his path toward a place in the Ministry of Defence. When she returned, no less, things all seemed to happen at once—hurriedly married in the same chapel his own parents had been quickly wed, the ancient architecture and pompous Anglican priests with disapproving eyes, whilst his mother feared that he’d throw his life away in the same sense as his father.
Nicholas Rupert—a tradition of R’s that Laurence liked to think built resilience in men named after cartoon bears, though Joanna despised, was born and for a short moment life seemed bliss. The happy ending of cinematic montages until he grew old and Nicholas took on the baton. But life went on, Joanna had work, he was progressing into civil service territory, and upon his position in the Ministry they were offered a relocation to America working under the British Embassy in Washington D.C..

Half a decade into their move, the economy went wayward. Laurence had entirely vanished into his work after news reached him of his own mother’s cancer diagnosis, Joanna was at a loss for projects—their daughter had been born, and by the end of it, who could blame them? The fissures became canyons and the arguments got worse, whatever magnetism drove them together seemed to repel one another, until the divorce was set in motion. Laurence was angry, scared perhaps, haunted by that man who had changed in wartime who sought to reimagine all his mistakes upon his son.

With custody of Nicholas and his daughter miles away by her mother’s side, culminating to a head when his mother died—unable to attend the funeral, Hardcastle suffered a mental break. To politely put it, he retired from the Ministry of Defence. Nicholas never forgave him for that, being a child with his dull, medicated father sitting in a lone armchair; drifting from place to place until they could settle his dosages. Life began to look up at a series of high administration positions he could apply his communications knowledge—but hard is it for a patriarch to admit he ruined his child’s youth. And to live with that, to live with his son he’d rocked to sleep now scrambling to escape at the very next opportunity.

Women came and went, dubious girlfriends and bad ideas, the longest he ever settled was with his old therapist—and that, by no lack of shock, ended on his account rather than hers.

A web of connections built over the past thirteen years has served him well, but as old sailors hold fast to superstitions, the invitation to manage the Ackehurst Estate company went unread until Joanna bothered him into it. Hauntings to him were poppycock, made by the mind and exaggerated by the contents of one’s experiences, but the pay was good and how could he pass up an opportunity to have Nicholas closer to his mother? While he could finally see the daughter he’d missed all those years?

Tensions rode high the first six months, but reconnecting was by some way cathartic. Even with the contempt he’d built for her. Nearly eight years employed due to the throwaway idea of his ex-wife’s kindness, and Laurence finds himself settled into routine. Begrudgingly. As still mildly skeptic as he is about hauntings, people paying for a service is none of his business—only selling it.

VISAGE
NAME: talulah jane winslow
NICKNAME: lou, lula
AGE: twenty-six
GENDER/PRONOUNS: cis-female (she/her)
ORIENTATION: bisexual
ROLE: the medium/psychic

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: anya taylor-joy
BODY MODS/SCARS: she has multiple ear piercings, no tattoos, and a collection of scars either too small to warrant much attention or constantly covered by clothes.
STYLE: x xx xxx
DESCRIPTION: she values comfort and practicality over anything else. sweaters, jeans, loose skirts, and earth-tones are always lou’s first choice of clothing. she is never seen without some sort of sweater on her person — no matter the weather, she always tends to run cold. she’s usually seen wearing some sort of stone or crystal jewelry on her ears, wrists, and neck.

PSYCHE
with the smell of liquor on her breath and shaky hands constantly guiding cigarettes to her lips, it’s no secret that lou is falling apart at the seams. her psychic ability — a curse if you ask her — haunts her every day. peace of mind is a rare thing for her, so she relies on alcohol and nicotine and cheap thrills in order to keep herself distracted. she seems to constantly be on edge and she has a short fuse — all wound up tight and ready to explode. though she’s aware deep down that she has a problem, lou is too proud to admit it aloud. she puts on the front that she’s perfectly fine, thank you. she distances herself from even those closet to her in order to hide the mess. and she’s fine with that, she says. she’s perfectly content being alone if it means she’s left alone, she says.

POSITIVE TRAITS: loyal, hardworking, ambitious, empathetic, passionate
NEGATIVE TRAITS: reckless, impulsive, distrustful, dependent, stressed
FEARS: ironically, lou is afraid of ghosts and afraid of dying because she fears the possibility of becoming one herself. similarly, she’s not afraid of the dark, but what hides in it — she’ll never be able to rest easy in rooms with open, dark spaces.
HOBBIES: reading, painting — oil being her preferred medium, and jewelry-making.
HABITS: chain-smoking, drinking, and fiddling with jewelry and the hems of her clothes.

DRIVE: she strives to rid the world of evil spirits, which is what eventually leads to her joining the group. she both believes their souls deserve to properly pass on and that the living deserve to live in peace, unbothered by any lingering spirits.
PUBLIC IMAGE: lou has made a name for herself as a reputable psychic and medium.
GROWTH: there are many ways lou can grow. she can learn to trust others. she can learn to not let her gift control her. she can learn to rely on more healthy things to cope.

tidbits

(1) she is the co-owner of winslow & davis psychic readings, a business she owns with her ex-husband. most of the services they offer are fraudulent and her medium services are only partial-truths, but they’ve built a reputable name for themselves anyway. it mostly just serves as a source of income for her.

(2) she has a pet cat named opal. he has white fur, is missing a chunk of his left ear and his entire left eye, and a nasty case of arthritis. he’s an old, ugly little thing but he’s about the only thing lou holds dear to her heart.

(3) lou refuses to sleep without some sort of eye mask or blindfold. too many times, she’s woken up to find an unwanted ghost in her bedroom. at least this way, she can pretend they aren’t there.

(4) despite literal years of seeing gruesome-looking ghosts, she still isn’t desensitized to it. she no longer gags as much as she used to — opting instead to cry or shut her eyes, but the fear and disgust is still very much present.

(5) she is a biiit of an impulsive buyer and has racked up a bit of credit card debt and a hoarding tendency because of it. money is temporary and… so is happiness, but it’s the moment that counts.

(6) her drink of choice is a rum and coke. she frequents the local bars so often many of the bartenders don’t even need to ask what she wants. her meal of choice is anything she doesn’t have to cook herself. she lives off of takeout, tv dinners, and ramen.

(7) she makes her own jewelry! it’s about the only part of her side job that she genuinely enjoys. while she doesn’t really believe crystals hold any sort of healing power, most of her jewelry includes them. she’ll usually coordinate crystals and their alleged healing properties with how she’s feeling that day, hoping they work even a little.

(8) lou has tried every possible method she can think of to get rid of her psychic ability. therapy, hypnotherapy, antipsychotic medication, weed, you name it. some things make it easier to cope but nothing gets rid of it completely — but she’s always willing to try some more.

(9) she tries to quit smoking a couple times a year. she always does well for about a month, relying instead on nicotine gum and patches, but all it takes is for her to be stressed out enough for her to fall right back into the habit.

(10) lou tends to date around a lot. she often has a new man or woman at her side, claiming she loves them and that it’s different this time, but they never last more than a month. like the liquor and cigarettes, dating is another vice for her.

HISTORY
talulah was born and raised in one of the most notorious haunted houses in the southern united states. it was at this house, in her primitive years, when lou became aware of her gift. her family refused to believe their home was haunted, believing talulah to be attention-seeking. lou remained at the house until she was seventeen and eloped with her then-boyfriend richard davis, the two moving to massachusetts both to escape the past and create a new life for themselves.

the two ran a small business once they reached massachusetts and profited off of her gift. they offered psychic readings and medium services and managed to scrape by enough money to provide for themselves. later, when their business was began to fail, they expanded and started offering things like tarot and palm readings, selling crystals and homemade crystal jewelry — things talulah didn’t really understand or believe in. she played the part believably enough, though, because business became better than ever. she made a name for herself as a reputable local psychic and people began to travel large distances in order for a session with her.

rick and talulah got divorced when she was twenty-three. running their business had began to take a toll on her. while she told her customers things they wanted to hear — that their loved ones passed peacefully and missed them dearly — it was often, in reality, quite the opposite. daily, she’d see people who had died horrible, horrific deaths. she’d see ghosts that followed her from the house she was raised in. they’d follow her home — even when they weren’t really there, they were in her dreams. in her thoughts. it was then when she really started to consider herself cursed and she turned to the bottle to cope. rick, having never really believed she was “gifted”, divorced her shortly after, deciding she was crazy. the two of them agreed to remain business partners in order to keep their successful business and rick found his own place.

lou was approached by the agency about a year after her divorce. she had said no, at first, plagued enough by spirits at her own business. she eventually agreed when it was promised that the spirits she’d encounter in the vacant homes would properly be laid to rest. she continues to run her business on the side, alongside her ex-husband.

VISAGE
NAME: Ridley Murdoch
NICKNAME: Rid, Mud, ghostgirl
AGE: 28 years old
GENDER: nonbinary (they/she)
ROLE: real estate agent
SEXUALITY: lesbian

APPEARANCE
APPEARANCE: With a wiry, athletic frame, Ridley isn't necessarily the image of pure intimidation, but they're nothing to scoff at, either. Their skin is naturally a lighter tan, and tends to darken considerably in the summer. Thick, dark curls of hair are currently cut shorter, falling to one side, with a clean undercut. They stand at 5'10.

FACECLAIM: roberta colindrez

STYLE: On the job, Ridley goes for neutral-toned blouses and pleated dress pants, often with an accompanying blazer. They love a good, classy trench coat to top things off. Their clothing leans as far towards androgyny and masculine styles as they can get away with in the job. Off work, she can be found wearing looser clothing, including button-ups, cropped t-shirts, distressed jeans and lots of rings and necklaces. A nice, expensive Jaeger LeCoultre watch pretty much never leaves their wrist.

BODY MODS / SCARS: Rid's got a number of smaller scars from various injuries in her childhood. One notable scar is a jagged three inch line along their upper right arm from running into an exposed nail. They have gauged ears and a large, ornate snake tattoo wrapping around their left wrist onto their hand.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Ridley can be best described as an incredibly intelligent hard-ass. They are smart, and always want to be learning more, but it has less to do with any joy of learning so much as the constant need to be prepared for whatever life throws at them. She hates sitting around when she could be doing something (even if it isn't technically her job). Rid has a compulsive need to be useful to the people around them, and to never be seen as a burden. They have a tendency to suck it up and bury their feelings deep, usually leading to a private breakdown hidden far away from anyone.

They are skilled at coming across as a perfectly affable person, all while keeping people at arm's length. Even if they aren't necessarily close with people, they are loyal as hell, and simultaneously vindictive if that loyalty is compromised by the other party. Although she is honest, and prefers brutal honesty, she understands the need for sugarcoating. Considering all the repressing she already does with her emotions, it isn't much more effort to choke down any comments they think will come across poorly. But it is important to note that they have no qualms with direct confrontation. In fact, Ridley tends to be the person to shoot optimism in the foot, preferring a much more realistic and pragmatic approach to things.

Not much for relaxing or fucking around, Ridley's jokes are often at someone else's expense and incredibly dry. She will make sure someone is doing a bad job if that's what she believes to be true, especially if its something that would put someone else at risk in any way.

SPOOKS: losing their sister, creaky doors, mirrors in the dark, cockroaches. eyes in the dark, haunted houses

HOBBIES: wood-working, reading, hiking, kickboxing, candymaking, organizing

HABITS: grinding their teeth, lots of finger jabbing and snapping to punctuate their sentences (especially when fired up), rubbing their nose, hands on hips, pacing

DRIVE: Ridley has this inherent need to be the "rock": responsible, dependable, mature, predictable and helpful. They also need to be the primary protector of the people they care about. To Ridley, success is defined by how much other peoples' lives are improved by her being in it, rather than any satisfaction they receive theirself.

PUBLIC IMAGE: The Murdochs are small-time celebrities in niche circles due to the childhood tragedy that caused the death of a parent. The death occurred in a "haunted house." Besides that, Ridley is a pretty good seller's agent working primarily in suburban housing. Great at a serious but personable first impression, especially with clients. However, coworkers quickly come to know her as a diligent and capable but hot-headed asshole.

GROWTH: Ridley needs to chill out so bad it's crazy. They haven't taken the time to be selfish in years, and find it hard not to constantly be burning the candle at both ends. They also desperately need to learn to trust in other's capabilities, especially their sister's.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY: Raised in Massachusetts by loving parents, it might initially seem odd just how hesitant Ridley is to talk about their past. Their parents- along with their children's help -flipped houses for a living, hoping to score big. When Ridley was a teenager, their mother died in a construction accident, leaving their father wracked with grief. As he fell deeper into alcoholism, Ridley took it upon herself to step up and act as the parent to Charlotte. This put immense pressure on them to grow up fast, and learn to always be ready for things to come to ensure her sister had as good a life as Ridley could offer.

Ridley attended a local university on commute in order to remain present for Charlie's sake. At least, until she left for college. With no clear objective for the first time in a long time, Ridley felt lost. Her work in real estate was more of a go-to family business than anything she felt strong passion for. They began taking up various hobbies like carpentry and welding; just exploring their options for something that felt like a "purpose." In fact, prior to joining Ackehurst Real Estate, they had been debating leaving the career.

But when Charlie seemed determined to join, Ridley's dormant sibling instincts kicked into full gear again, and they weren't about to let their sister get herself killed. Not alone, at least. And now, much to their chagrin, Ridley is selling haunted houses. Yippee.

TIDBITS

• Ridley doesn't drink often due to family history of alchoholism, and weed makes them paranoid. Instead their vices are more along the lines of too much ice cream. Also smoking, but that seems to come and go in waves.

• They love sitcoms. Their go-to is Superstore. Their guilty pleasure is the Bachelor/ette.

• When she was in middle school and high school, she'd often get into physical altercations with other kids.

• her general response to fear is to grab the nearest object she can use as a weapon.

• Nearly every serious relationship they've been in has ended with her partner describing her as "controlling" or "overbearing."

• Ridley watches HGTV like it's a football game.

• If they met a true crime podcaster they might just strangle them.

• Fall is their favorite season, and surprisingly, they actually love Halloween. They always make special candies for the occasion.

• Most of the contacts in Ridley's phone are just their first impressions about people. IE. Weird Train Guy, Lady With Rat Dog, etc. Charlie is on speed dial as "Dumbass ⚠️ "

• Learned how to play the guitar to impress a girl in high school (it was Wonderwall) and has recently picked it back up.

RELATIONSHIPS

CHARLIE MURDOCH: Ridley's sister with whom she has a . . . strained relationship. However, she remains extremely protective of her. If you plan on being even a little rude to her, prepare to face the elder Murdoch's wrath. Hell, you might face it even if you're just trying to be friends.

TALULAH WINSLOW: Charlie's drinking buddy that Ridley has been suppressing a crush on since their first meeting. Yes, she drives them insane, and yes, they can't stop thinking about her. Hope that helps : )

"MODE" MODESTO: Ridley's closest friend since college. He's practically the third Murdoch sibling. Probably the person they feel the most comfortable around.

AJ AXTEL: Along with Devin, a drinking buddy! They hang out at a local lesbian bar. He's So Normal, and Ridley likes that. They are also familiar and friendly with his ex.

CLEO MCBRIDE: Ridley's current girlfriend. They've been going out for about three months, and Ridley doesn't have nearly as much heart in it as Cleo does . . .

Clair is rather plump with slight curves. She is pale with cool undertones giving her skin a somewhat rosy hue, dotted with freckles. Her eyes are wide and a bright green and hair ashy brown cut in a medium bob and slightly curly. She usually looks as if she stepped out of the first half of the 20th century due to her obsession with vintage clothing.

Plain lobe piercings, Pin up tattoo on her left calf, rose garland tattoo that reaches one shoulder to the other across her back.

    Clothing style.

All vintage or hand sewn clothing ranging from the 1930s to 1960s. Both men and women's. She favors the 1950s the most so majority of her clothing are from that era. They wear a modest amount of makeup, usually eyeliner, light eye shadow and pinkish-red matte lipstick. She usually has to alter most of it herself.

Kiss Land
The Weeknd

VITALS
Name
Charlotte Rosemary Murdoch
Nickname The only thing worse than having the prenom of a sickly Victorian child is having a middle name like Rosemary. Might as well have named her Dillweed. Charlie is the best she can do with what she’s got.
Age 25
Gender she/her
Orientation fluidity is key
Role Real Estate Agent II (Jr., The Younger, The Sequel)

LOOKS
Faceclaim Victoire Salmon

Body Mods/Scars Triple lobe piercings, although the bottom pair are lopsided (thanks to that guy at Claire's circa 2009). A tattoo of a mermaid cat on her thigh that she doesn't remember getting. A 5" scar from a gash across the back of her head which, thankfully, is hidden by hair now.

Appearance Charlie has looks that she honestly doesn’t deserve. She hasn’t eaten a meal with any semblance of greens or protein in years and subsides almost exclusively on pre-packaged junk. Takis? Yum. Bagel Bites? Perfection. Cookies n’ Cream Poptarts? The repast of kings. Despite a diet that consists of more grease than the Formula 1, she's somehow managed to remain as slim as she was in her tween years. She can’t so much as scrub her face with a bar of soap, and some days can barely get her teeth brushed, but she still somehow has (mostly) clear skin and a beaming smile. The total lack of consequences for her poor self-care habits hasn't encouraged Charlie to better them into adulthood. If she can drown it in dry shampoo and body mist, she will. Besides, she knows if she reeks, Ridley will jump on the chance to tell her so. The exception is, of course, gilding herself for client meetings. Then she even manages to swipe on some lipstick. She's been bleaching the life out of her hair since 14, mostly aiming to look the exact opposite of her sister.

Style Dichotomous at best. Her home/office wear is limited to what she learned on the Alt side of Tumblr in 2015 and almost entirely consists of bleach-stained band tees and athleisure leggings. She saves her good clothes for when she’s meeting with homeowners; then, she manages a very put-together business wardrobe consisting of singularly black pieces. While he favorite color is blinding fuschia, she can’t trust herself to put together a look professional enough with neon colors. At least she gets her professional clothes dry cleaned. It’s remembering to pick them up that’s the kicker.

PERSONALITY
Ah, Charlie - what a time bomb. Sure, she’s loads of fun to be around. Always the first to start the karaoke party, to pop the New Years champagne, to dance (and dare she say? Panic!) at the disco. She greets every day with a carefree and energized attitude. It's why she's so damn good at her job; she can find the good side of any old dump, be it structurally damaged, overrun by foliage, haunted by unsettled spirits. She’s a fun and youthful soul who oozes charm in a way that immediately disarms most strangers (more importantly, clients). She owes half of her charisma to the copious amounts of caffeine and prescriptions she relies on to function on less than 5 hours of sleep per night. She has too much to do in the midnight hours - whether it be by dancing with strangers or drinking at home, she'd always rather drown out the bad feelings with Malibu than risk the bad dreams. There is a lot from her and Ridley’s past that she has never worked through. She casually jokes that pain and panic are her oldest friends, but it's way less funny when she's hunched over the kitchen sink having a panic attack at 2am. Charlie will always be too headstrong to admit that she help. Aside from her peppiness during work hours, she's still able to keep her late-night vices from her coworkers (now if only she could convince Ridley to back off). Despite the slew of bad choices peppering her young adult life, she has a logical head on her shoulders and a talent for recalling copious amounts of information at will.

Fears Are spirits too obvious? No? Okay, "malicious spirits"; Losing any one else, including especially Ridley; organized Catholicism (kind of); morgues, hospitals, or any other sterile-feeling environment

Hobbies Diamond painting, feeding stray cats, rollerblading, hanging out with her neighbor Boris (that guy's a hoot!)

Habits Is generally jumpy and easily paranoid. Doesn't like to be touched. Unconfirmed Adderall abuse.

Drive Charlie and Ridley have had a horrific history with the supernatural. While Charlie spent most of her young life desperately squelching any memory of what happened at their childhood home, she’s seen the offer to work with this particular company as a sign from a higher power. While she doesn’t really need the money, she wants to help heal homes and give families a chance to thrive in a way that hers was never able to. In her own way, it’s helping her heal herself.

Public Image Comes off as basic TM, which is totally warranted. Leans into the image of being young and dumb and free. Often uses her bubbly front to keep people from digging deeper. Everyone knows Charlie can show folks a good time.

Growth Needs to learn to confront trauma instead of burying it. At the same time, needs to develop healthier habits and learn to put down the bottle.

Beforehand
History
Charlie’s a native Masshole, hailing from some rural New England town with a colonial history. After flunking out of college, Charlie moved out to California to live with a Norwegian DJ who she matched on Tinder. While the relationship quickly went up in smoke, the move to SoCal helped her realize her talent for real estate. After she and Aksel split, Charlie (broke and homeless) ran back to Massachusetts. Weary of being back in her childhood stomping grounds, Charlie avoids mentioning her middle or last names unless explicitly asked, fearing it’ll associate her with the story that made headlines on every true crime and paranormal activity blog in the early-2010s. She went on a podcast about it once and regrets it immensely, and still gets the occasional pestering Instagram DM asking her to share her side of the story. Charlie recently joined the Company of her own will, applying through Indeed and everything. She became a strong candidate when she didn’t seem phased by the mention of the group’s modus operandi, one that most straight-laced realtors would’ve scoffed at (“Haunted houses? What is this, some kind of sales gimmick?”) She had the face for the job and the warm personality that she could put at the front at a moment’s notice. She and her sister had never worked together in a professional capacity before, but it’s not like a bad outcome could make them more estranged. Deep down, Charlie’s hoping the shared profession will help them reconcile.

Funky Facts

- Does NOT want to see ghosts. No seriously, not even to satisfy her curiosity. If a ghost shows up on a job, she's stepping out. Not her circus, not her monkeys.

- Ask her about her 500+ day Duolingo Streak!!!!

- Surprisingly good at Mah-Jong

- Her first kiss was at Cape Mary Summer Camp to a guy named Harry

- Has had 6 different crowns on her teeth because she can NOT stop chewing on ice. It drives Ridley crazy

- Although she constantly acts like she just wants Ridley to leave her alone, she’s petrified by the idea of being by herself

- Really likes reading about sharks, rays, and skates

- Would rather actively die on the street than step foot in a hospital

- Her favorite stray neighborhood cat is a black tomcat she named Rudy

- Allergic to shrimp

Inter-character relationships

Charlie’s got a complicated relationship with her sister. Part of her feels guilty that Ridley singlehandedly raised her, even swapping out the chance at having their own young adult life at the expense of raising a brat like Charlie; half of her resents Ridley for being so strict and judgmental. Underneath it all, she cares deeply for her sister and panics at the idea of living a life without Ridley there. [/font]

lillard
;; monique

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.
FULL NAMEmonique anastasia lillard
NICKNAME(S) ⎯
nini, a nickname that reminds her of childhood sleepovers with too many cousins and gentle, shaking hands braiding a tender head. nini is something that only her close family calls her, a cherished name that reminds her of better times.

AGE ⎯ thirty-six
GENDER ⎯ cis female | she/her
SEXUALITY ⎯ heterosexual
ROLE ⎯ real estate agent

HAIR ⎯
dark brown in its natural state, but is currently dyed rich auburn and slightly faded. once at the awkward stage of her hair journey, monique now sports a luscious 4b patterned afro beneath her protective styles.
EYES ⎯
dark brown, almost black. her eyes are almond shaped and framed by thick, permanent lash extensions and two neatly plucked brows.
SKIN ⎯
dark brown with warm, golden undertones. monique has a few moles marks near her eyes. suffers from ache, especially when stressed. often keeps her makeup “natural” looking when in a professional setting.
WARDROBE ⎯
monique’s clothes are rather modest. when working she can often be seen in pants suits or pencil skirts and comfortable button ups. outside of work she dressed down, opting for simple jeans and sneakers with less jewelry.
FACECLAIM —
issa rae

PERSONALITY ⎯
with the level of success that monique is at in life, it’s easy to think that she has it made in life. people often view her as one of the lucky ones, someone who has made it in life. through hard-work monique was able to accomplish so much. the way that she goes about reaching her goals stems from her perfectionism. monique has to be putting in work, giving all of herself in order to be satisfied with her results. her standards for herself are extremely high, some would say too high and maybe even unhealthy. she’s quick to put them at ease. monique is an efficient woman who is able to handle multiple projects at one time. she’s always jumping from one thing to the next with little time for herself. she’s not the type to stop and smell the roses.

monique is the type of person that can put most people at ease, a skill that she uses on her clients. engaging and patient, it seems as though she can deal with just about anyone. monique’s patience, her willingness to listen and help leaves her win others over. a tiny amount of this is faked. monique was taught that she should be someone who people view as approachable, likeable even. it was imperative that she never showed attitude, that her manners were the very best. at her core however, monique is not someone who enjoys too much. she is exhausted when her day ends, from smiling so much, for giving the very best of herself with little in return. she keeps all of these feelings inside, ignoring them in favor of convincing herself that she’s fine. her upbringing has taught her that the weight she bares is a normal thing, that it is just a part of life.

her willingness to lend an ear to others isn’t just because of her upbringing. no, monique is naturally nurturing. there’s a softness to her that society often tells her is weak, so she tries to keep it hidden. the world is often cruel to those who are sensitive. too many times has she been told to suck it up, to dry her tears because crying is of little use. if she ever planned on being taken seriously she would have to tough up, and she did. it was easier to play confident and push her feelings aside. her busy body ways are a result of this, being idle gives her mind enough to create doubts. being idle allows for her insecurities to rear their heads.

WHAT SPOOKS HER? ⎯ monique is quite the scaredy-cat so most things frighten her. she’s especially scared of the typical ghost, demons, and other spooky things. she really hates spiders too.
HABITS ⎯ pacing when she’s troubled, rambling when she’s nervous, stealing pens, covering her mouth when she laughs
HOBBIES ⎯ yoga, collecting vintage lipstick cases, going to wine & paint classes, mentoring young women & girls, networking

DRIVE — monique wants to reach the very top of her career field, maybe even going as far as to open her own real estate business with her own agents and everything.
REPUTATION ⎯ an ambitious but down to earth woman. monique is known for being an active member of the community. people see her as a self-made woman and someone to look up to.
HOW CAN SHE GROW? — monique needs to learn how to stop and smell the rose’s sometimes. she’s always on the go and often pushes herself too hard. honestly she needs to be kinder to herself.

HISTORY ⎯
monique was raised in the average two parent household. the lillards were a proud, deeply religious family. they were adamant to teach their child how to live correctly, instilling their beliefs into her. monique’s childhood was typical of someone who was raised in such a strict household. for the longest time monique was the demure and obedient daughter, she never dared to question her parents unless she wanted to sound ungrateful. constantly she was reminded of how her parents had come up, how they had struggled for her, only for monique to throw it in their faces. they placed their expectations on her, even lived vicariously through her in a way. she never complained, she was a good child.

monique buried herself into her school work. she strived for perfection as it seemed to be the only thing of value to her parents. extra curriculars, community work, they were placed upon her shoulders so that her parents could show her off like a prized possession. monique could only hide how she felt behind smiles.

it wasn’t until she got older that she began to distance herself. monique never truly confronted her parents, instead working her ass off to avoid them and others. once she became successful it was easy to blame her absence on meetings with clients and other work related things.

VISAGE

NAME: Joanna Guilia DeSantis
NICKNAMES: Jo, Joney
AGE: 47 years old
GENDER: Cis-Female, She/Her
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
ROLE: The Architect

APPEARANCE

FACECLAIM: Carla Gugino
BODY MODS/SCARS: C-section scar on lower abdomen, ear piercings, healed over nose-ring hole on left side
CLOTHING STYLE: Flowy and Free-spirited, Jo would never be caught in anything tight. Jeans, maybe, but she much prefers the ability to move than to be near sewn into a dress or a pair of slacks. She likes lighter, breathable fabrics and rich colours as well, ranging from pale hues to dark autumnal shades. Despite the organisation and rigidity that comes from the geometry of architecture, Jo is very much otherwise of that sort in appearance. Letting her hair down is a requirement, not a choice, evocative just slightly of style trends that have already passed (that are, of course, inevitably going to make their way back into the mainstream). Scrunchies are often around a wrist or tied into her hair, but are never pulled tightly. Dresses are just as common as flowing trousers, often tapering out at the knee or at the ankle, and skirts are a favourite. Floral patterns are also familiar and fun, though Jo is not beyond wearing a few bold prints to really strike out. Of the perfume she wears: bergamot, vanilla and rose hip, invoking that of her mother's favourite perfume as well.

PSYCHE

personality

Jo is a vibrant spirit, someone who refuses to be tied down for very long before feeling the innate desire to take off. These can manifest in evasive techniques, often in the face of confrontation or arguments, but have existed since she was a child. A deeply empathetic soul, Jo does feel and feels a lot-- though she can come off as flippant and lackadaisical on emotional matters otherwise. Relationships are better spent through hobbies, and it is very rare that she carries these relationships beyond familiar back-and-forth. True and honest sentiment leaves room for disappointment, something that Jo abhors, or worse, being dropped completely. Perhaps she runs to avoid being run on, but clinging to familiar things, and rather than looking back, prefers to completely move on. Reminiscing is for art, for history, for things that don't ache so close to the heart.

At work, she is a team-player. Vocal and equally receptive to others, she can come off as a bit arrogant at times, mostly in the fact that she does know most things (at least in her craft). Confident with a vision, and almost twice as stubborn, enough talking can usually bring her down from her idealistic pedestal. There is a desire within Jo, something that wants so desperately to be renowned and loved for her feelings and her visions. She is an intuitive creative that wants to be heard, and wants to be beloved. To become something historical, and something profound, would be a dream. Action and spontaneity are a hallmark, thus, of her type of work ethic. She likes to get stuff done now rather than procrastinate to deal with it later.

These dreams often come at the cost of those closest to her. Family would describe her as airheaded and hard to catch, where Jo can go weeks without replying to a text or calling back. When it comes to her kids, she's tried a lot more in recent years to be relevant, though she did make more of an attempt with her second child to be present and as warm as possible. It was a lot to ask, to be the perfect parent, and she doesn't like to think that she isn't. Yet, the evidence is right in front of her: a son, her eldest, who'd rather avoid her calls than talk to her. It's a pain worse than a thousand cuts, but by nature of Joanna, she'd rather let him have his space than try and figure out what was wrong. She does pretend to know, often projecting her own insecurities onto that of their father.

She is a romantic, a creative, and a visionary. There are great things to achieve, great ideas to put into reality, and for the time being Jo is quite keen to enact these aspirations. To her, she's done her time as homebody housewife with a fleeting job and a fleeting hobby. Doubling down onto what she wants to do is the only way she's been happy lately. In the last fifteen years Jo has wanted to be the very best, most welcoming mother possible. She goes out of her way for her children, often learning about things she never thought she would, in order to appear more open-minded. Welcoming others, as well, has been her motivation for exploring the world a bit. After having felt quite stifled in her marriage, Jo wants to experience all that there is.

On an intrinsic level, Jo has a slightly selfish desire to be famous, or at least to propel her family name to something beyond familiar circles. She doesn't want to be world renowned, but she doesn't want to fade into obscurity either. Part of that is why she's so fascinated with history, and as well, highlighting things that would otherwise be forgotten. She can only hope to be as fortunate.

public image

Known at least in the Boston area as HappiMess LLC, a house-flipping independent business she's been running for about ten years now. They cater to more mid-century comes, often upgrading them to a modern look, but are not beyond simply refurbishing an older home to be up to code. Otherwise, Jo presents herself in whatever creative circles she can, often frequenting cafes when they are most likely to hold poetry nights (just to listen, honestly), and has had her work in a local art gallery at least twice. An acrylic artist, Jo focuses on recreating photographs as if they were in a dream, often utilising impressionism and some light expressionism for her pieces.

growth

For as much as someone who's fond of sticking their noses in history books, Jo is not quick to learn from the past, often finding herself running in the same circles. New things are scary, as much as she'd hate to admit it. Maturing, despite being a nearly fifty year old, means not clinging to the self or the fleeting future-bound comforts. She needs to acknowledge others, often reverting to a bit of an arrogant self-defense mechanism, without fully shutting down.

Responsibility to others, as well, is a fleeting thing. A mother who is more of a friend than a nurturing source of comfort; reliable to friends without simply up and running or withdrawing completely.

BACKSTORY

INTER-CHARACTER
RELATIONSHIPS:
Laurence Hardcastle, The Ex-Husband

...TBD

HISTORY: Bruno DeSantis was thirty, a first generation Italian immigrant living in America, when he found a passion in carpentry. The feel of wood, structuring buildings and furniture, was a profound skill. He had a knack for design and innovation, having come from a family of clock-makers back in Italy, that lent itself to his natural prowess. A blue collar man, making a living for his growing family in their new life in California, he lent his hands and back where needed.

He, in fact, was one of the many labourers that worked on the Winchester Mystery House, and had glanced at the widow on more than one occasion. He would tell his family of the sadness in her eyes, and the fear and anger that trembled her hands when she spoke about the house plans. He would curse her name, several months after starting the project, when he was fired on the spot.

As damning as it was, he held respect for the finished house. Having watched it come together, he took his children to visit it several months after the widow had died, finding some joy in pointing out the sections that he helped build. In the eyes of his youngest son, Mateo, this was a remarkable feat. He was a boy constantly proud of his father, but to see the wonder that he had participated in was akin to setting the spark on a great flame. A family business, DeSantis & Sons Carpentry, would begin here.

Joanna DeSantis was born in 1975, the only daughter in a family of rowdy boys. She heard little of her great-grandfather and his minor achievements from the rest of the family, but she did grow up hearing some stories from her grandfather. Nonno Mateo was just as passionate, even in his old age, often whittling little toys for his grandchildren.

In a fierce, family-oriented Italian American home, Joanna was close with most of her family. Holidays were often spent in grand company, sitting at a table with fifty seats, and vacations were with at least three trailers in succession of all the cars. They loudly spoke over each other, they gossiped about each other, and they fought often. Most took it as mere fact, but Joanna was always more sensitive. Whisked to the kitchen with her mother and her aunties, Nonna Giulia often told Joanna that she'd be a good wife one day; that she was different, a kinder soul, and she'd make some poor man a happy spouse.

This was, of course, a veiled insult masked under good intentions. It became a fear of Joanna's, more than anything. She steered clear of boys in school, withdrawing into the library and into the raw clay of the school's art studio. Scholarly and 'nerdy', finding that she had little interest until high-school in being popular, Joanna was quite the wallflower for some time. Her interests in history were perceived as weaknesses by others, especially the other girls in her class (who were mostly her cousins), but Nonno always affirmed her. He enjoyed sitting by the fireplace, listening to Joanna recite what she'd read that day from her history books.

Once the braces came off and she'd convinced her mother into letting her highlight her hair and get a perm, however, she felt... different. Grown up, maybe, and finding that smiles came easier. At this point she struggled even more to fit in, swimming upstream with the current beating the other direction, but managed to find some closeness in other artistic friends. They put on the local plays for the school, always asking Joanna if she'd paint their backdrops for them. She found an interest in organising and building the set pieces as well, relying on her uncles and her father on helping out. It was unconventional, sure, but her father wasn't one to let his little girl down.

Sometime around fifteen years old her Nonno finally passed away, and in his feeble hands he held his Jo's, giving her a kiss on the knuckles and having her promise she'd keep his father's story alive, of all the buildings that he bled into, and prevent him from simply becoming another anonymous worker. Joanna began a deep-dive then, finding a fixation for history books and historical facts that she could collect. As a teenager she had about five scrapbooks, full of magazine articles and photos she'd taken (with the disposable camera she'd gotten for her birthday). Her and her art friends flourished in this interest, though their involvement was on pure creative endeavour, whereas Jo's was a fleeting attempt to cling to her Nonno's words and memory. It was a scramble, and a fear. She held one of the scrapbooks tight in her arms at his funeral, but was frozen from approaching the open casket.

Life after that moment carried on, but Joanna's fear persisted. On a graduation trip confined to a whirlwind summer, it was then that Joanna would meet her future husband. She, of course, being young and with a scholarship to getting her degree in architecture, considered it a fleeting experience. It was romantic enough, with kisses spared in the dark, winding streets of Rome, but nothing to throw her aspirations away for. Gossip to be giggled, at the very least, on the plane ride home back home.

MIT was Joanna's home for the next four years, where she flourished among other intellectual minds. The culture came off a bit rich, among some of the socialite free-rides that populated MIT to her, less laid back than she remembered from San Francisco, but there were small pockets of artistic communities that Joanna found relief in. Cambridge, at the very least, held such rich history that she could distract herself in. One of her part time jobs was at a local art gallery, bothering with front desk administration before attempting to throw herself into actual painting. She did photography first, having an eye for composition from a young age, but quickly evolved into acrylic and oil based. All the while were phone calls from her mother and father, her mother mostly, asking when she'd be done and come home. There was an unspoken responsibility that she would come home, and return to be close to everyone.

It was an internship during her final year, an architectural firm in Liverpool, that brought Joanna to England. It was bleak and rainy, smelling of fish more than anything, but she wasn't one to disparage an opportunity for the possibilities it could provide. It would only be six-months anyway. At some pub, with no mind to those around her, she suddenly and violently became aware of a familiar face. The recognition had been like a jolt to the chest, or a fist to the face: the boy from a fair few years ago that she had shared so many breathless nights with. Time had changed them both, four years that bled into five seeming like night and day in comparison. They talked over a pint, which became two, which then became five. It was clear that whatever attraction they'd had before was just as magnetic.

Sunrise came, making Joanna acutely aware of the investment she'd taken out on her heart. She played coy, but it worked for the better anyhow; as he was a busy person, here and there with his navy work, where some weeks they'd go without speaking, only to spend the next three nights in quick succession together. Whether it was dating or just comfort not even Joanna knew, but after about a month and a half of being in Liverpool they moved in together, splitting the rent on a student accommodation that was much nicer than her original flat that the internship had paid for, though that wasn't saying much about it. It was cramped with a pleasant view of three-quarters brick wall of the building next to them. That mattered little to Joanna, finding inspiration just by existing with her new lover.

It wasn't long before those six months were up, feeling like a blink in actuality, and Joanna was preparing to head home. She'd been increasingly nauseous in the week leading up, though had chalked it up to feeling anxious about leaving Laurence. Fainting on her last day at work, however, had her co-workers sending her to a local clinic for a check-up. One round of blood tests later and the answer was clear: she was pregnant. The information was beyond shocking to Joanna, who'd thought that she'd been so careful, that they'd been so careful. Her initial reaction was to hide any evidence and slink into the darkness to never be found. She could rip up his phone number, his address, and she could disappear in the night. She could go home and find comfort in her mother's arms. It would have been easy. But for all that she'd already worked toward, to lose it all, it was not something that Joanna really wanted.

So, drying her tears and bolstering her trembling courage, she told Laurence of her situation. Her priority, as she explained, was to finish her degree-- but it didn't mean they had to leave each other here. As much as the thought of having a child, of being a mother, was scary to Joanna, in her young naivety she saw a great father in the man in front of her. Sentimental and sensitive, she saw a child to unite them and to give him a further purpose. It was selfish of her, perhaps, and after making it quite clear that she would insist on his involvement... their fates were set.

Luckily, being that the internship had come at the tail end of her degree, she'd only a few weeks left of classes to finish up. Her perspective changed greatly, knowing that she was now carrying new life. She said she'd go home, she'd pack her things and sell everything she could, and she'd use the last of her money to fly back. They could... have a life together. Still strangers, the two were thrust into a position of responsibility and growing up. Her nonna's words would echo in her mind.

Skipping out on walking for graduation, opting to have her degree mailed across the ocean, Joanna did as she promised and returned to Liverpool. Approaching the third trimester by this time, the downtime she spent feeling useless and jobless, though the job she'd interned at seemed willing to take her back in at any point available. That time was spent nesting and becoming acquainted with Laurence's family, while dodging calls from her own family. Her mother, worried sick, seemed to detect something was wrong-- but rather than accept the situation for what it was, sought to write off her daughter as a lost cause. Communicating through her brothers was the only way she was able to talk to her mother during this time, which became quite the blow to Joanna's self-confidence.

They would have a son by '99; Nicholas Rupert-- a middle name that had made Joanna's nose scrunch a bit-- only a few months after their wedding. It was a stifled affair, occurring in an equally stifling church, and Joanna confined in a stifling dress. Her only relief was that of Laurence, who at least provided a shoulder to lean upon when her ankles ached. Having the baby so soon after was that haunting realisation that this was their life, made worse by Joanna still having barely known his family with the newborn. She did her best, a lively person by nature, but they seemed less vocal than her own family; a dagger to the gut, in a sense, of homesickness. But she swallowed it, refusing to linger on the feelings.

She was taken in by her old job in no-time at all, enough to help pay the bills, but quickly was Joanna recommended for a bigger job with the city. Contract to contract she was hired to help build a neighborhood by the coast, privy to the superstitions of the locals and their cursing of the Northumberland folklore. At this point in her life Joanna was still as superstitious as her family, with a bit of her own nuance from having deep-dived on many cultures and their beliefs in her time at school, but found particular interest in the locals concerns. They had input, specifically on warding patterns they requested to be put into the wood on the municipal buildings. Harbourmen spoke of restless spirits that lingered by their salted coast. It was fascinating, to say the least, for Joanna, who'd gone into the job expecting it to be rather cut and dry.

The interest was piqued here, but it would not last. Once the job was complete she'd gone onto a new contract.

They lasted five years before Laurence's work shifted and the family was pulled back to America. By then Joanna had fallen pregnant once more, and part of her did long for a change in scenery. Washington DC, however, would remain her least favourite place. In the time that they spent there, perhaps goaded upon by the recession lingering on the sight-lines, she was the most miserable. Work was less spontaneous, far more rigid, and raising two kids kept her home for more than she would have liked. Splitting duties became a burden for both of them, and despite their more than substantial shared income, ways of life no longer aligned as they had once before. Perhaps it could be chalked up to how quickly they'd wed and become a family, but at the end of it, the only ones that suffered were the children.

The divorce was a painful affair, part of Joanna not knowing if it was the right decision or not. She visited her family after this, flying back home for some time to align herself. To be welcomed back into the arms of her parents and her uncles, her brothers and her sisters-in-law, it was something she'd missed wholly. Filling them in, letting them meet her children, it was the family reunion that Joanna had always hoped for. When it had concluded and she had returned back to DC, she set in plan new goals for life. It started with a small independent business reupholstering thrifted furniture, which surprisingly was a hit for all the retired wives in the DC area. She'd reconnected with old friends from MIT as well, and upon the request of one who had a smile very sweet, Joanna made plans to move back north.

Settling the manner of custody was a lot less messy than she would have thought, and though the children complained, it was decided that they'd split them. Nicholas was older, further along in school and in no need to be uprooted. Hannah, their little one, would go with her mother. The separation was killer for Joanna, but she figured it best. Moving back to Cambridge for a brief stint, it wasn't long before Joanna shacked up with that old university flame in Boston, though it would be an equally fleeting relationship.

At the very least, with her boyfriend, they began a house-flipping business. Joanna had always been interested, and the boyfriend had a backpocket full of loose funds from a deceased relative. They started it together, and even when they separated, they remained somewhat close and friendly through it. House-flipping became an ingrained passion in Joanna, and she haunted many local homes for sale that were in dire need of refurbishment. They worked on contract as well, sometimes for businesses that wanted unique spins on their aged buildings, or families that wanted a new start in the countryside. For HappiMess LLC, no job was too dirty-- and in a lot of cases, Joanna and her friend had more fun finding random homes to resell than working on someone's creative vision. Joanna, definitely, enjoyed this angle-- having her own unique vision, and an explosive touch that marked each house unique.

After only about five years, a coincidental and cursed number if you would ask her, Joanna's interest was piqued on a unique business model. Real estate, while not her strong suit, but geared toward very unique homes. It was on the offer that Joanna would recall her grandfather's words, and her great-grandfather's memory.

She's been working for Ackehurst for eight years now, having even thrown in a recommendation for her ex-husband as well during her first few months there. They'd promised to be better and work together, after distance only estranging their children further, with Nicholas being most effected by it. Hannah, now approaching her senior year in high-school, would be able to enjoy most of her teen years with both parents within the same state, at the very least.

VISAGE
NAME: Aleksander Hoffman

NICKNAMES: Aleks, Xander, Doc

D.O.B: Thursday, August 13th

AGE: 37 years old

GENDER: Cis-male (he/him)

ORIENTATION: Gay

ROLE: The Ghost Hunter

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: James Wolk

BODY MODS / SCARS: He has no tattoos, no piercings. His arms and legs are littered with various scars, most of which are left over from his teenage shenanigans.

CLOTHING STYLE: To put it nicely, he dresses preppy. To put it not so nicely, he dresses like an old man. His closet is full of tweed, slacks, shirts with entirely two many buttons, and pants with a non-fashionable amount of pockets. The most trendy thing he owns is a pair of converse his god-son got him for his birthday.

Aleks sticks to natural colors. He usually wears colored polo shirts with kakhi, or a button up paired with sensible slacks and a tweed jacket.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Aleks is a very kind person. He tries his best to be understanding and empathetic even though it doesn't come to him naturally. He has a hard time putting himself in other people's shoes. Most of the time he's focused on making sure he's not going to get hurt, and it's hard to rationalize thinking about others when his brain is on red alert at all times.

He's very family oriented wether than be found family or blood relatives. He stays close with his brothers and sisters even though he and his parents aren't close. Although he has a hard time opening up to people and letting them get to know him, he can be a very clingy and affectionate person once he comes out of his soccer dad shaped shell, but it'll definitely take a little bit of work.

He's prone to panicking if he feels like he's going to be left behind. He'll often say things he doesn't mean, or that he ends up regretting if he thinks he's going to be abandoned. Usually, Aleks attempts to reconcile and explain his actions but by the time he realizes he screwed up it's too little too late. This is usually due to his borderline personality disorder, which is the result of past trauma.

FEARS: Being all alone, death, and loosing loved ones are the big three. Smaller ones are: roaches, corpses, starfish, being possessed by a ghost, any spirit that's been in the mortal plane for more than ten years ("They get angry. Very, very, very angry.")

HOBBIES: Knitting (thanks to Archie), playing piano, composing music, thrift shopping, sewing, reading.

HABITS: Fumbling with his car / house keys, wearing mismatched socks, triple knotting his shoes, bouncing when he walks.

DRIVE: He's only doing this for Archie while his dad is out of the country. His usual salary as a percussion instructor at a local high school isn't enough to cover food, rent, school stuff for Archie, as well as things for himself, so he had to get himself a new job.

PUBLIC IMAGE: Anyone that doesn't live near the high school he used to work at probably don't know him. His public image outside of the town he lives in is basically non-existent.

HOW HE CAN GROW: He needs to learn to trust people again, and he needs to learn to open his heart to the possibilities that love can bring.

tidbits

1. ) Aleks is jewish! He's an Ashkenazi Jew.

2. ) Aleksander has two doctorates: one in education and the other in paranormal science.

3. ) His favorite food is hummus! He loves hummus with literally anything.

4. ) His love language is penguin pebbling. If he cares about someone he will find a way to give them random shiny things he finds.

5. ) He wakes up everyday at 7 am, only because he used to have to for his other job and just can't let himself sleep any longer.

6. ) He's allergic to pumpkin! It makes his airways swell. He found out eating pumpkin pie as a ten year old and had to go to the hospital.

7. ) Aleks is horrible at baking. He's ruined cakes made with the cake mix that comes in boxes.

8. ) He is a 'pillow mom.' If there's a surface thats pillow-able you bet your bananas there's a pillow there if Aleks had anything to say about it.

9. ) He loves hairclips. He doesn't wear them super often just because he's a little embarrassed, but he'd be down to show off his little collection to anyone that wants to listen to him.

10. ) Every year for halloween he's an amazon employee. He doesn't have a real reason, he just thinks it's funny.

background

His childhood was mostly uneventful, up until his father left. He just left, in the middle of the night when Aleks' mother was working a late shift.

His mother then went into a downward spiral, which led to her neglecting Aleksander for most of his life. She only ever seemed to care when there was something for her to gain out of interacting with him.

Because of this, he developed BPD and a tendency for codependency. He relied very heavily on his boyfriends throughout his life, so much so he would almost smother them.

He got significantly better about this into his twenties, but he still has a hard time regulating his bigger emotions.

The rest of his life goes on as he expects. He and James, one of his friends from highschool, stay close. James has a son, whom he names Archibald. James makes Aleks Archie's god-father.

Around the time Archie turned 12 and Aleks turned 35, James had to leave the country for work. He didn't say how long he'd be gone or what exactly he'd be doing, but he asked Aleks to watch over Archie whilst he was gone.

Aleks had to get a bigger apartment and a new job, which leads him to the real estate agency.

VISAGE
NAME: Griffin Vaughn
NICKNAMES: Griff, Dr.
AGE: 35 years old
GENDER: cis-male, he/they
ORIENTATION: pansexual
ROLE: medium/psychic

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: Louis Garrel
BODY MODS: A wide assortment of scars that are scattered around his body, specifically his torso and arms from multiple accidents. The most notable ones are a jagged scar on their right arm and across his chest.
STYLE: Contradicting. Comfortable. Lazy. On his days working in either the morgue or a laboratory, he can be found decked out in a white lab coat, paired with goggles and gloves. If he remembers, which is rare, he’ll pull his suits and business casual’s out of the depths of his closet to wear to the funeral home. Clients appreciate professional attire; to their dismay - it’s a coin toss if he will look professional. Ackehurst is no exception. There, he cares even less about looking professional, preferring to wear large oversized hoodies and sweaters in various shades with random logos on them. His favorite are the ones his nephew had gifted him; black hoodies with bones, skulls and ghosts on them.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: It’s no surprise that Griffin and emotions don’t mesh well; due to being desensitized to ghosts, spirits and any other nasty entities. It’s difficult to disgust him, with their experience performing autopsies, burials and the sights he’s seen. With his sense of detachment to horrors, it translates to his personality. Insensitive, and abrasive, he struggles with empathy. Especially in a work environment. A fan of organization, he prefers to translate that not only to environment but also his emotions. Place them in boxes labeled with permanent marker and stack them in neat little stacks. Or neat coffins, the same ones he uses in his work. The same he’d recommend to anyone struggling to deal with their emotions - advice that not everyone wants.

Outside of work and horrors, he’s a man who craves stimulation and ways to keep himself busy. He’s constantly moving forward, a work-alcoholic at heart. Education was his vice for most of his life, throwing himself into it and not looking back. It was the way he dealt with his ability to see those who others can’t, refusing to let it poison his mind and determination. The dead and monstrous are easier to deal with than the living in his opinion, and through his work with the dead, he’s come to terms with his ability too. It’s come in handy, providing a whole slew of information he can use.

Most would be surprised to know that the mortician is desperately in need of friends and companions, even if he comes off as unapproachable and cold. On the spectrum of charismatic and awkwardly stumbling through conversations, he’s off the charts. In awkwardness that is. He has a tendency to sit and stare, trying to find a way to interact and relate to those around him without coming off as morbid or detached. If he senses that’s he’s not fitting in, which is most of the time, he slips away to work or offers to reorganize the entire office until it’s clean.

FEARS: Cars, crosswalks & busy streets, heights, losing his psychic ability
HOBBIES: board and card games, woodworking (specifically caskets and coffins), re-watching and collecting movies, reading, and collecting bones.

HABITS: clenching and unclenching hands when out of their comfort zone, color coding their items, aggressively cleaning, leaving notes out for those he cares about, creating detailed lists in his notebook

GROWTH: They need to learn how to communicate, and be willing to accept others' emotions and work through their own at that too. Being emotionally unavailable has been a pain in the ass for him to deal with it, and it has a tendency to ruin relationships. Learning a good dose of social sense would help him in the long run as bringing up autopsies and funerals mid conversation has been known as a mood killer.

DRIVE: They are of the mindset that ‘someone needs to do it’ when it comes to both funeral planning services, and interacting with the paranormal. The fact that he loves his job is a benefit. Considering the morbid quality of both sides of career, he is out to be the damn best psychic funeral director you’ve ever seen, constantly hustling to do more work and assist both the living world and the spirit world.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY:
Born on the rural outskirts of a town in Germany, and adopted by a loving family, it was fine until it was not. A visit to an old castle discovered the fact that Griff saw more than others did - and his parents were delighted. It was a gift in their eyes. An ability that could guide him into a luxurious career. They pushed him, determined to help him succeed, and when he expressed interest in having even more contact with spirits they were more than happy to assist. From haunted castle to haunted house, they traveled and then moved to the United States. The idea that the horrifying ghosts and beings Griffin was coming in contact with were chipping away at his quickly crumbling sanity didn’t cross their mind, nor the fact that their other son was suffering. There was no stability in their lives, driven forward by obsession with the paranormal. He turned sixteen, and the parents disappeared. A camping trip with only Griffin and the two of them to explore an abandoned mine shack gone wrong. His brother blamed him, and he blamed himself, throwing himself into work to make up for the gaping hole in his heart. He’d been behind the wheel when the truck rammed into their side, his brother passing on, and leaving a young nephew that became his responsibility.

After the death of their brother, Griffin enrolled himself in the local community college. To pay for their education they got a job at the graveyard, working graveyard shifts at that too, and accomplished his associates degree in mortuary science.

Since then, accidents have followed the man wherever he has gone concerning vehicles. Cars randomly break on him, or stop, and crossing the street has become a dangerous experience. The multitude of times he had landed in the hospital caused long-term brain damage, impacting his memories. It didn’t stop him from opening his own business after working in a local funeral home, and heading back into higher education to gain his doctorate.

The company approached him around seven years ago, interested in his ability as a mortician, and then in his ability as a psychic after his reputation rapidly grew after a span of multiple successful years. It was helpful to have someone on the side who knew a body inside out and had access to a whole fuckload of records. Unable to dedicate himself fully to the company, he negotiated a contract that gave him the flexibility of working ‘on-call’ and when boredom struck him. As of now, he is back at the company after a break during which he expanded his business, more or less fully dedicating himself to the company for however long he can.

PUBLIC IMAGE: His main job is working as a funeral director, owning his own funeral planning practice called ‘Spick & Span.’ Chances are, if you’ve had someone die, you’ve interacted at least with them at least once. His reputation is well known as one of the best funeral planning services in Boston, and at that one of the oddest too, for providing small gravestone and skull candies at the front desk to crying family members and friends. They even provide out of the city services, more than willing to travel to do their job, with a couple offices scattered throughout the city. Their job as a forensic pathologist is less well-known, nor does he talk about it a lot. Intersecting in a lot of circles, most know him, but few have interacted with him closely - preferring to keep their distance.

TIDBITS

↠ His main degree is in forensic pathology (along with an associates in mortuary science) and by some godly will, he completed both his undergraduate, his medical degree and even pulled off the extensive training all while working.
↠ They own an unreasonable amount of board games, and all possible expansion packs for Cards Against Humanity. If he’s bored, he will whip out a deck of cards, even if they are in the middle of a haunted house and sit on the floor.
↠ Owns a tarantula whose name is Fuzzy. Yes, it is fuzzy. Yes, you may touch it. Oh, why are you running away? On the same wavelength, a huge fan of reptiles, amphibians and arachnids.
↠ His phone is color-coded and organized, as well as all his folders, and their notebook - and approximately everything. His pen for his notebook is custom-made with a fluffy spider on it, and his penmanship is immaculate. Unlike his memory.
↠ Has dabbled in a wide variety of religions, and isn’t planning to settle down in any. Currently calls himself ‘pagan’ if asked - otherwise doesn’t consider himself religious.
↠ They have been hit by a car - thrice. Crossing the road is an experience he does not enjoy.
↠ He is a huge fan of Disney movies, and animated shows, and will binge them in the privacy of his own home. Rom-coms are their cup of tea, and same with romance novels.
↠ In his free time, which he doesn’t have much of, he dabbles in languages. At the moment they are fluent in English (on a good day), Dutch and German.
↠ Not a fan of social gatherings at bars or other establishments where drinking is common. They despise the smell and taste of alcohol, and won’t drink.
↠ Will sit everywhere - even on the floor in the middle of a haunted house. Dirt and grime doesn’t scare them, and he prefers sitting on the floor. Can even sleep everywhere - against a wall, standing up and in the middle of an altercation with an entity. Chances are, he'd even sit on you too. A skill he learned from his past experiences in residency and school.

frank ocean

VISAGE
NAME: Puck Desmond
NICKNAMES: Pucky, "the kid"
AGE: 26
GENDER: cis-male (he/him)
ORIENTATION: bisexual
ROLE: the intern

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM:
Matt Damon
BODY MODS/SCARS: n/a
STYLE: Generally plain, inoffensive, and professional. Most often, Puck is dressed like he's either going to class or teaching a class. Plenty of button-ups, beige coats, and the occasional tie on a more productive work day. Nine times out of ten can be observed in his glasses, which are a pretty heavy prescription. His contacts are expensive and have to be specially ordered online, so... no thanks. Very rarely wears shorts. Almost always has a tastefully-coordinated wristwatch.

That being said, his limited eye for fashion persists, giving his outfits' simplicity a hint of trendiness. Also wears almost exclusively high tops with funky laces. Opts for band tees and sweaters on the rare casual day.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY:
Sunny, earnest, and a little naïve, Puck is first and foremost a "golden boy" trope wrapped in a neat, sandy blonde little bow. On the surface, he's almost frustratingly "perfect". As the only child of a psychiatrist and a dentist, he has grown quite accustomed to knowing when to open and shut his mouth. He has a strong respect for authority and would practically saw his arm off if instructed to. He rarely cuts corners and is honest to a fault. He places a lot of pressure on himself to succeed and to be well-liked, and it bothers him incredibly when he falls short of that standard.

Moreover, Puck has a competitive streak and cannot stand to be ignored. And while he knows better than to let his pride damage his image, his desire for praise is ever-apparent. Not only that, but he has a tendency to take a lot of things pretty literally; he was not blessed with the genes for figurative language. He wears his heart on his sleeve and doesn't do well in hiding when things bother him, partially due to his somewhat sheltered upbringing. But if one is patient with him, he will be the same right back.

FEARS: Not much, to be honest. Ghosts (and the idea of them) aren't all that scary to him. But otherwise: failure (duh), drowning, dolls, geese, and accidentally eating pine nuts, to which he is severely allergic to.
HOBBIES: Frisbee, lacrosse, vitamins, reading academic journals, math, guitar, violin, and the never-ending pursuit of scientific discovery.
HABITS: Bites his nails. Cannot hide his feelings to save his life; his eyes are an open book. Rambles when nervous. Always either an hour early or five minutes late; never exactly on time. Raging electrolyte addiction.

DRIVE: He doesn't necessarily have to be here given how much data he already has for his dissertation. Even so, there's too much to learn from these enigmatic houses to quit now. Above all else, Puck has a passion for the mysterious and will stop at nothing to uncover what could not be explained for decades, even centuries. He admires his colleagues immensely and likes to make it very clear, daily.
PUBLIC IMAGE: Probably kind of boring to most others. Puck's flaws are so well-hidden that there's not much left to him beyond being evidently good at everything he does (music, sports, school, social life, etc.). He's an up-and-coming voice on the topic of phantasmal phenomena, garnering a very polarizing, disputed amount of recognition for his attempts at pioneering a supernatural subsect of academia. His notoriety more or less remains within his very niche field of research.
GROWTH: Needs to accept that no, he'll never be perfect... or universally-liked. In a way, he needs to grow up.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY
: Orlando, Florida. Two moms, each with an M.D. Perfect childhood, perfect grades, and perfect behavior. There's not much to say about Puck's upbringing that hasn't been written a thousand times before. So... we won't.

He wasn't born with a passion for the occult, nor did much of anything in his life point him toward it. In truth, joining the firm was his first real brush with ghosts; and that isn't for a lack of effort. Going into Yale as a history-physics double major, Puck's singular academic goal was to bring the supernatural into a scientific setting. At first, it was out of a desire to gain attention in an otherwise overlooked field, but as he delved deeper into each and every mystery, a genuine curiosity sparked within.

And so his life's work has become proving their existence. Explaining the unexplainable in a setting that has long since disregarded anything of the sort. He's been with Ackehurst Real Estate for the better part of a year(ish!?) and has since gained a mountain of material for his dissertation since then. As an intern, he's established himself as somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades, but that's a fancy way of saying he's ghost bait who sometimes files files or wields a hammer and nails.

tidbits

- Never leaves the house without a spritz of "unisex" floral perfume.

- Again. Super blind. Prone to Velma moments.

- Was captain of his high school lacrosse team and played frisbee in college. Definitely your run-of-the-mill Type A, 4.0 GPA overachiever.

- Total indie rock fella. Has been to more concerts than Kim Kardashian's Twitter following.

- Hates taking notes on computers. Carries and uses a sketchpad and pen, if he can help it.

- Okay, fine, he's kind of a show-off. Don't ask about his card tricks.

- If any local bands need a guitarist, violinist, or violist, Puck's in the market...

- A tradition passed down from his moms, every year he throws a wilder NYE party than the last. When the clock reaches midnight, there may or may not be a few tears in his eyes...

- His last girlfriend dumped him in the middle of a two-week cruise.

- Has so many allergies, he wears a wristband that lists every single one. Includes but is not limited to shellfish, strawberries, pine nuts, birch trees, and sesame, half of which only give him a rash, but still...

Spellbound
Siouxsie And The Banshees

VISAGE
NAME: Leland Modesto
NICKNAME: Mode
AGE: 31
GENDER: Cis-male (he/him)
ROLE: Monster Hunter
SEXUALITY: Bisexual

APPEARANCE
APPEARANCE: Standing somewhere around 5’8 with olive skin and dark, wavy hair that is messy more often it is done up neatly. His eyes are black and painfully tired, though occasionally catch the light in a strange way that’s never quite been picked up on camera or video.. His build is lean and fit with strong arms.

STYLE: You’ll most often catch Mode dressed formally, or business casual, though occasionally done up even more. Unfortunately, he also comes across as someone who is not enjoying a single second of it, and by the end of the day is disheveled in some manner. He’s lost so many ties, everything’s always needing mending. Blood is such a pain to get out of the expensive textiles. He likes to look put together, even when he’s not. Outside of work, it’s a toss-up of what he might show up in, but rest assured he’ll be bundled up, the guy gets cold easily.

BODY MODS / SCARS: Mode’s most notable scars are on his face- deep claw marks that drag over one eye and above his upper lip. They’ve had enough time to settle into a pale color. He has other scars here and there, but his hands in particular. His palms and fingers are rough and calloused.

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Most times, Mode is relatively easy to get along with. He does his best to make it so, always teetering on the edge of being a people-pleaser but never quite stepping over into doormat territory, though by accident playing with people’s feelings often. He usually puts on a casual and friendly air, but it’s always lacking a certain amount of substance, like he’s just shying away from saying what he really means. Though it may be difficult to really properly get to know him, Mode is helpful and loyal to his friends, and will go out of his way more often than not to be someone reliable even if he is very flaky socially.

His level-headedness is a well-liked feature, but it is generally a side-effect of numbing himself. He doesn’t like to think about the way he feels very much, and to that end he acts like he doesn’t feel deeply about things at all until they jump out suddenly in small outbursts, but he switches them off and goes back to normal very quickly, flipflopping between these states often when under duress. He’s not very talkative, and his body language doesn’t give away much. Somehow, despite everything, he’s an optimist.

SPOOKS: Being possessed or losing himself to psychosis, total isolation, needles, tight spaces, dark spaces under the bed.

HOBBIES: Research, collecting trinkets and artifacts, boxing, videography.

HABITS: Crosses his arms often when talking, smokes when he’s stressed, stares at people often. Talks to himself when alone.

DRIVE: Some might say Mode’s drive is also his detriment. His obsessive urge to feel and seem ‘normal’, always chasing the idea of a regular and perhaps even dull life is what dominates a lot of his desires, to the point he is often lying to himself. Especially when his real desire lurks somewhere under the surface, fueling his instinctual and more impulsive choices: to find out what’s really going on with him, if there is anything at all besides what he often worries is just a delusion. As much as he wants to pretend it doesn’t exist, his ever-present need to know more can’t leave it alone.

PUBLIC IMAGE: Among monster hunters, Mode is well-known for being very efficient at his job, and somehow surviving even the worst circumstances even when he absolutely shouldn’t have. If you have a particularly dangerous case, he’s your man. He’s also known for disappearing the second he’s unneeded, and is never seen at social gatherings for very long.

GROWTH: Mode desperately needs to learn how to let people in, for his sake and others. He wants to be trusted but doesn’t know how to give himself over completely, and be vulnerable enough to have the connections he actually craves. He needs to learn how to self-reflect, and ground himself more in reality without using the people around him as a safety net. And, most importantly, he needs to learn to face his deeper fears.

TIME MACHINE
HISTORY: Growing up in a small suburb on the west coast of the US, on the outside and to anyone who asked, Mode lived a perfectly normal childhood. He had plenty of friends in school and got good grades, but most would remember that no one was ever invited to his house. Raised by a single father that any person would characterize as a delusional, deeply unwell man, it’s a miracle Mode came out without more problems. Mode’s father had a deep-rooted obsession with the occult, and regularly participated in actual cult activities with a group that, to this day, Mode has been unable to remember the name of. Dark things went on in his childhood home, and Mode often went days stuck in his room to avoid the going-ons of whatever ritualistic happenings were taking place in the rest of the house. Supernatural presences came and went, and Mode was no stranger to broader, stranger things lurking, and a constant evilness that seemed to permeate the walls. Growing up like this only pushed Mode out of the home the moment he turned 18, desperate to get somewhere as far away from his father’s claws as possible. This is what started his need for normalcy, for something as far removed from the strangeness as he could get. He attended college for a few years but ultimately dropped-out, desiring to be even further away from his hometown. For awhile he lived in the city, got a comfy little monotonous office job of the type most people would rather die than have, and just tried existing independently.

But, like most things seemed to go for him, Mode never found the normalness that he wanted. As if cursed by all the things his father had done, Mode was always stumbling his way into supernatural activity, if it didn’t immediately attach itself to him first. It made it very difficult to maintain relationships and a proper work-life, constantly haunted both literally and metaphorically. No matter how hard he tried to avoid the paranormal, it followed, and eventually he realized that if he wanted any chance at an average life like he dreamed, than he would have to face these things head-on. It was then that he met Claudia Thai, who worked for an independent company of Monster Hunters. Recruited through her, he went on to do contract work and was constantly moving around the country on jobs. It was nice, and despite the reality of the work he enjoyed it, but ultimately decided he wanted more consistent work, and took up a job with the Agency where he’s been ever since.

TIDBITS

• While not much of a drinker, Mode’s alcohol tolerance is embarrassing in the fact it Doesn’t Exist. He’s a sober man because of this

• He likes to capture physical evidence of his work, and has many of his old cases on video, going so far as to have them in tape format.

• Speaking of tapes, he’s emotionally attached to the cassette-player in his place, and is always buying things on vinyl. He likes the way things sound analog.

• As much as he fervently tries to avoid bringing any hauntings to his home, he is often taking objects or trophies from his jobs. The physical proof of his accomplishments is nice.

• Despite what some might expect, Mode texts a lot like a high-schooler might text: full of shortened words, lingo, and emoji use that make no sense.

• He has a pet, a black cat named Alice. She likes to use him as a scratching post.

• Mode’s guilty pleasure meal is gas-station sushi.

• Has an oddly strong sense of smell, and likes to joke that he can sniff out evil. Somehow this has not yet been proven wrong.

• Buys jackets a size up because he likes having extra room in this pockets to put all his junk in.

• His favorite hunting weapons of choice are his silver-tipped axe and the revolver he got when he was first recruited.

Call Me Karizma

VISAGE
NAME: Lucena Rooke
NICKNAME: Luc (pron. Luke), Lucy, Doc
AGE: 30
GENDER: cis-female (she/her)
ROLE: doctor
SEXUALITY: bisexual

APPEARANCE
FACECLAIM: Lucy Boynton

STYLE: A soft to sleek academia look of greys, blacks and whites, with a dangerous or gothic edge. Chokers, multiple silver necklaces, high-waisted pants, skirts, doc martens.
x . x . x . x

BODY MODS / SCARS: Lucena has a number of smaller scars criss-crossing her hands and arms, up to her elbows. She has a small nose piercing, and multiple ear lobe piercings (usually adorned with pearl studs or silver hoops).

PSYCHE
PERSONALITY: Exuding a sharp intelligence with that disconcerting gleam in her eye, it would be inaccurate to describe Luc as anything short of a genius. A proper genius. An expert in her field a good portion of her life, she's a workaholic through and through. But it's not like she has any desire to do much else. Luc is focused and singular-minded, not easily distracted from her goals. Her competence and aptitude may fool you, because outside of the context of her work, Luc is clearly lacking. She's rather socially inept, struggling to empathize with other people, and often relies on mimicking and/or mirroring others, or keeping a mental "script" ready to go for certain scenarios. Catch her outside of that? She's going to be left lost and floundering. In many ways, her monotone pleasantness- her standard masking mechanism -serves to make her slip ups endearing instead of off-putting.

She may be a genius, but because of the course of her life, she can also be rather naive. Luc has huge gaps in her knowledge, even for some basic things, and especially if its something that simply does not interest her. Sorry, but if you don't pique her curiosity, she simply won't bother to put energy towards you. Luc may be kind, but compassionate would be an inadequate descriptor. Paired with her impulsiveness and ferocious desire to further her work and sate her own interests, Luc can be a dangerously ticking time-bomb for the people she's around. It's only a matter of time before her ambitiousness knocks down the entire house of cards.

SPOOKS: Nothing. And that's the problem.

HOBBIES: Reading, self-care (painting her nails is free therapy), soap-making, taxidermy, insect pinning, wet speciment preservation, building miniatures

HABITS: Tapping things, biting her thumb while thinking, avoiding eye contact or making Too Much eye contact

PUBLIC IMAGE: Lucena Rooke is a well known paranormal scientist, with a focus on classifying supernatural creatures and identifying the biological effects of interfacing with the preternatural. She has traveled the world in her pursuits, given lectures, worked on a few (relatively) large-scale studies, and is notable for being associated with Brisco, where both of her parents are employed in important roles.

Let's Fall In Love For The Night
FINNEAS

Basics

NAME: Graham Flynn Byrne
NICKNAMES: N/A "Asshole"
AGE: 28
GENDER: Cis Man
ORIENTATION: "Unpicky" (Pansexual demiromantic)
ROLE: The Home Inspector

Appearance

FACECLAIM: Nicholas Skidmore
DESCRIPTION:: Standing at a muscular 6'3, Graham is very eye catching. Both with bright red hair, and his usual status as one of the largest people in the room. Usually with a vacant grin, he gives off the impression that there really isn't much going on up there. But he has an infectious smile and the type of energy that usually comes from a person who is very charismatic.
BODY MODS/SCARS: A calla lily tattoo on the foot
STYLE: Casual, and with a surprising amount of color, Graham dresses like he's about to go camping, but with a lot of skin showing. Especially done so to show off muscles and physique. A big fan of silver jewelry, he adorns his hands in bits of silver, and sometimes throws on a couple of silver and gold necklaces. He also is supposed to wear glasses. He's in denial. He does not wear glasses.

Psyche

TW: SUICIDAL TENDENCIES FOUND THROUGHOUT THIS SECTION ALONGSIDE GRIEF AND MOURNING
An idiot, Graham is a creature of pleasure. He likes flirting, and he likes connecting with people. Not at all gifted with booksmarts, what he makes up for a lack of STEM related abilities is his ability to charm. A persuasive fellow, he often portrays himself as goofy and slacking, as it makes people less scared to be around him when he doesn't have very much intensity to his personality. Spontaneous as well, he's a mild adrenaline junkie with a penchant for sticking his head into trouble. And usually flirting with the monster of the week out of a desire to make everyone around him feel more at ease.

Despite the outward showings of goofiness and flirtatiousness, he feels incredibly protective and responsible for those around him. Able to take on a great burden, he is excellent at survival and is surprisingly reliable when the going gets tough. Loyal and dependable, he's good in a crisis, and the type of person that someone would want by their side. Like a smiling flight attendant while the plane is going through turbulence. And truly, his charisma and social perceptiveness comes from a surprisingly high emotional intelligence, a sharp eye, and a deep feeling of empathy for the people around him.

It is from these traits where a great deal of his failures lay. He believes that nobody wants to see the real him: dependable, kind, empathetic. They only want to see the goofball who slacks off and a nuisance. He's also carrying a great amount of guilt from the past,
and a lot of his more self-sacrificial and adrenaline junkie behavior is rooted in a deeply held belief that he should've died a long time ago, and that death will be his reward for finally redeeming himself for his failure to save his sister.

FEARS: Graham is incredibly claustrophobic. He needs to have 1 visible exit at all times. He also hates snow and cold. Some more esoteric fears include being forgotten and loneliness
HOBBIES: Flirting, People watching, writing sad poetry, flirting again, reading sad poetry, learning about space, flirting, going on dates, flir-
HABITS: Inopportune moments of humor and flirtatious gestures marked with stupid grins and lame puns.

DRIVE:
Graham is chasing his own death, and waiting for the day that he can finally die. But until that happens, he must redeem himself by saving as many people as possible and making everyone's life around his better.
PUBLIC IMAGE: Considering he's primarily a home inspector, it's doubtful that they know much about him. However, he does have a very big reputation for being an immature fuckboy, but those that actually interact with him know that he's surprisingly nice.
GROWTH: His own trauma and grief are valid and don't need to be repressed for the sake of others. He is allowed to be sad and to outwardly express when he is in pain. Also, the act of living is its own reward, and not just the trial for the reward of death. Furthermore, the act that he hides behind is ultimately detrimental to his own well-being.

Backstory

HISTORY:
TW: SIBLING DEATH AND GRIEF AND SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
Graham was born in the middle of nowhere, exactly two minutes before his twin sister Aoife. His family was very traditional, and roles were set immediately. He was to be the mature older brother, his sister was to be the wild younger sister. They shared everything as children, and grew up practically as one person. This was due to his parents essentially putting him on what was dubbed "Aoife duty" in order to keep her out of trouble. So Graham got really good at talking them out of consequences whenever Aoife would do something like fight literally everyone on the playground. It was his duty to protect her from harm, and in doing so, he accidentally gained a reputation in their small town for being a flirt and an asshole.

All he needed was Aoife, anyways. So the opinions of others didn't really matter. That is, until they went missing in a snowstorm. Long story short, Graham was found wandering the woods. Alone. Physically, he made a full recovery, but he was different. He was angrier. He was morose. And people were uncomfortable. Everyone around him decided to forget that Aoife ever existed, it was easier than having to face reality where a massive tragedy just occurred. And so they all shut Graham out, because he was too much of a reminder of what had happened.

Graham learned that his own pain caused other people pain, and so therefore it should never see the light of day. He changed, and became way more boisterous than before. Put on the facade of healing, of becoming more like "himself." Persuasive, flirtatious, and a bit of an asshole. He became what everyone wanted him to be, and if he was a little more thrill-seeking than before, a little bit more frantic, then that just played more into the persona of spontaneity and hedonism.

Eventually, though, Graham found himself stuck where he needed to get a job. He decided to become a home inspector, after all, he saw a perfect job for himself: dangerous, high mortality rate, and he could help people along the way with very little credentials needed.

So he became a haunted house inspector. Hooray!
