- Those who do not conform are there one moment and gone the next.seriously man, don't steal Chia's hard workThey are taken at random, one of the few supposedly inexplicable things to happen in the well-oiled machinery of everyone's lives, but nobody dwells on it much. Sometimes, a guard will come for them as they are working, each person working tirelessly and uncomplainingly at their work station. Sometimes, they will leave under escort in the middle of meals, walking between tables of people that do not stare after them and who will continue to eat, one steady moderate bite at a time. Sometimes, everyone will go to sleep but one less person will wake in their bed, ready to follow the routine that has defined their lives and everyone else's lives for as long as they all have lived.
>>The one thing that they all share in common, these blips in the system who disappear without warning and who are either seamlessly replaced or conveniently forgotten, is that they are not quite... right. They neither work with the same efficiency or mindless determination as everyone else nor eat their food with silent, mechanical movements. Showers are longer and toilet breaks are irregular; at times, one might stare through the wall as though they expect to see something more than pristine white, whilst other times will find one waking up noisily in the middle of the night. The few who notice will not comment or wonder of their whereabouts, and those who do soon join their ranks.
>>But at the end of the day, they are but a defect. Everyone's goal in life is to work, serve humanity well, and continue to do both for the rest of their lives. If an individual cannot do that much, a weekly lecturer will tell them as though they had never heard the same spiel every other week, then what use do they have to everyone else? They have none, everyone will chorus together, and life will go on. Work will be done, everything will run smoothly and the nation will continue to stand, tall and proud and efficient as ever.
>>In a system like this, there is no place for those who do not conform, and so nobody asks questions and nobody pays it any mind. - I hate calling myself Rose but if that's what it takes to protect this, it's Rose'sPoliticsHumanity had been driven to the brink of extinction by overcrowding, neglect and sheer inefficiency by the time a select handful of affluent and influential figures met to discuss the world's future. By the time a solution was happened upon to save the human race and bring it back to its former glory, they had formed into the Government, the sole presiding body from which all decisions were created and deliberated upon. What they lacked in originality was made up in efficiency, ruthlessness and a single-minded determination to do what was best by humanity.
>>Or so they'd like you to believe, anyway.GeographyThe surface is a desolate wasteland, laid bare by humanity's frivolity and careless abandon, and only the hardiest of organisms roam it. What is not charred or frozen or otherwise empty land is a roiling sea, too warm to stay in for long and far too turbulent for most of its marine life, and those that have not perished are either deformed or mutated grotesquely to combat the tough conditions. It is rumoured that some humans, unwilling or unable to join the rest of humanity, have formed a colony up there, but only a select few are privy to that rumour (and nobody, not even the most knowledgeable of them, can prove or disprove it).
>>So if the surface is bare, I hear you ask, then where does everyone live? Deep beneath the surface, protected by layers of earth and rock from the uninhabitable surface and the molten-hot core, are twenty-six semi-detached buildings. Collectively referred to as 'blocks' and labelled from A to Z, each block houses a portion of the remaining population and is outfitted with everything a person could desire: sleeping quarters, dining and hygiene areas, and the all-important workplace, which differs from block to block. Overseen by guards, the permanent residents of each block go about their daily work in an efficient and uncomplaining manner, as well-disciplined and obedient citizens should, and continue to do so from the day they are assigned to a block until the day they are no longer at peak condition, which is when they are euthanized to prevent incurring further costs.
>>However, the entire population is not simply confined to twenty-six blocks; unbeknownst to all but the Government and their guards, there is a 27th with no assigned letter to it. There is no public record of a block where workers lacking motivation or proper training are sent to be reformed, nor is there any information regarding the existence of brainwashing, but...The 27th Blockmate, it's still Kuro'sTenuously connected to the other blocks through one flimsy tunnel to Block A, the 27th Block is home to those who do not fit into the system so meticulously planned and implemented by the Government, for they have the one thing which is deemed to make citizens inefficient and useless: emotions. Without the ability to clear their minds and thus make way for the brainwashing given to every efficient and obedient citizen, so-called 'defective workers' not only fail to follow routine perfectly, but also hinder other workers and potentially corrupt them as well.
>>Defective workers are often assessed and categorized for treatment based on their primary emotional defect, broken down into five distinct categories: love, joy, sadness, anger and fear. Depending on the results of testing, which is comprised of a questionnaire and a short interview with a Government representative, one or more labels will be assigned to a defective worker and a treatment schedule will be tailor-made to suit their condition. The end result, patients are told, will be re-assimilation with their original block with no consequences, should they prove co-operative.
>>Of course, this is all a lie.
>>Given the illusions of freedom and limited autonomy, defective workers are lulled into a sense of false security before they are subjected to torture, often psychological in nature and occasionally physical or verbal as well. Depending on the label(s) they are assigned, this so-called treatment will either result in heartbreak, loss of self-esteem and other individual values, insanity and even vegetation. By systematically eliminating the root causes for such undesirable emotions and leaving defective workers raw and open to aggressive brainwashing, order is restored and, as punishment, reassimiliated workers are sent to the most undesirable blocks to succumb to illnesses and die in agony.
>>Not even defective guards, who have either retained too much of their limited emotional spectrum or are resistant to the Government's authority, are safe from re-assimilation programs or confinement to the 27th block, first as probational guards and then as patients. Oftentimes, if fraternization with patients occur, they may even be assigned to oversee their systematic torture and eventual brainwashing in a bid to brainwash them afterwards, though cases are generally few and far between.
>>If re-assimilation is deemed impossible and condition is largely or entirely unaffective, there is but one alternative left to patients. In a system where obedience and efficiency are paramount, the Government has no use for defects who cannot obey simple programs and who refuse to subject themselves accordingly.
>>So they die. - btw I'm also called Shiro and yeah, this is Shiro's codingGeneral1a. Reservations will last until the day before the IC opens for posting; should your character not be mostly complete by then (and a reason has not been provided), your character will be eliminated for plot purposes.
>>1b. You will have one to two weeks to complete all your characters, so please keep this in mind while you determine the number of characters you will be taking.
>>1c. Please do not remove or rename any items from the CS. However, you are more than welcome to add or reorder items as you see fit, so long as everything necessary is included.
>>2a. Both drawn and real-life face claims are allowed; if you are uncomfortable with the use of either, please do not join and then complain about it afterwards.
>>2b. As part of the plotline, hurting your characters can and will most certainly happen; if you are attached to your OCs' sanity and wellbeing, please do not join this roleplay. It may also be good to prepare yourselves for major character injuries and/or character deaths (though, obviously, I will consult with everyone beforehand to determine which characters will be subject to this).
>>2c. If you have disagreements or do not like another roleplayer, this is not the place to act on your distaste. Either settle your differences in the DMs, refrain from interacting with each other or leave the roleplay; I will not tolerate petty fights or moderate them for you.
>>2d. I reserve the right to reject your reservation(s) on reasonable grounds; should you disagree, you may ask me for my reason(s) through a DM. Attempts to start something in the roleplay, as opposed to discussing things with me in the DMs, will lead to your subsequent rejection from any future roleplays I choose to make.
>>3a. If you are uncertain of anything and the info/rules/faqs sections either does not explain it in detail or does not reference your concern at all, please ask me whatever you wish through a DM and I will answer you accordingly. However, as some information will be revealed through the course of the roleplay and/or be touched on in the info thread, some of my answers will be deliberately vague.
>>3b. Once again, if something is self-evident in the info/rules/faqs sections and you ask me about it, I will not respond. Repeated offences can and will lead to an exclusion from the roleplay, especially if you have proven yourself unable to follow simple instructions.
>>4a. If, at any point, you no longer wish to participate in the roleplay for whatever reason, please inform me so I may make arrangements for your character(s), especially if they are interacting with someone else in the IC. Nobody likes to be left hanging with inactive character(s).Suggestions5a. If you do not enjoy or, at the very least, tolerate the idea of reading long plot posts or detailed information sheets, I am the sort of person who takes twenty words when four will suffice so we're going to run into problems. On that note, it may also be advisable for you to be a literate roleplayer; although I may not expect you to write as much as me, I do expect more than a few basic lines that have inadequate grammar, spelling and/or punctuation.
>>6a. I will be making a Discord server for people to discuss and socialize more readily before and during the roleplay; if you wish to be added to the server, simply DM me your username + code and I'll send you an invite. Although I will be making important announcements in the OOC thread, I will be more accessible and be more amenable to discussion with everyone on the Discord server.
>>7a. Plotting between characters is allowed and encouraged; however, please note that characters who are not from the same block will not have known each other for more than a handful of weeks or months, as the longest stay patients have in the 27th is a year (programs that are unsuccessful after a year will end in termination, otherwise known as death).
>>7b. Romantic relationships are also allowed and encouraged; however, please note that characters will most likely be privy to their significant other's torture to expedite the re-assimilation process. If you want to keep your relationship(s) relatively angst-free, I wouldn't recommend you bringing them into here. - ChiaRoseKuro was here and owns this codeIs the roleplay going to be taking place beyond the 27th Block? Not for the most part. As the playable cast are confined to the defective workers and guards (with Government officials and any other possible characters being played, by me, as NPCs), there should be no need to move into blocks A to Z unless an infiltration arc is created. The surface will also not be dealt with unless the plot manages to angle itself in that direction. How are people labelled according to their emotions?Further information will be given about the details regarding treatment and further classification of each emotion category, but I based most of my knowledge on the five main categories (love, joy, sadness, anger and fear) on
Inside Outa generic Google Search. For the specific reference, I used the second table on this page, which you can start examining if you'd like to have a general idea of what your character(s) will be diagnosed with.
>>If you meant physical labels, though, each emotional category has a particular mark branded onto them upon their identification. More information will be given about their appearance in the appropriate info thread post, but all you need to know are that these marks cannot be removed and are often permanently kept on re-assimilated workers. The ordinary citizen will not know the meaning and will, quite obviously, not bother to know about its meaning, but the guards will know exactly what they are and why they're there. Can defective workers/guards be given more than one emotion label?Yes they can! It's advisable for you to restrict your characters to one main emotion category, though, unless you'd like to see them suffer more; the more labels they have, the more complicated their torture (and, incidentally, the more severe it is). For the most part, practically every defective worker is expected to have a limited (if not full) range of emotions, but what's being targeted in their 'treatment' is the emotion they feel strongest or which is the main factor that drives them to disobey. You haven't really talked about how defective guards are dealt with...I realize that listing them as 'probational guards' who then transition into the same category as defective workers is a little vague, but the basic premise is that the Government assign problematic guards, especially those they suspect of being a little too independent for their liking, to the 27th. Oftentimes, exemplary guards (which you could make, if you really wanted to, but what's the fun in playing a brainwashed character?) will be mixed in as well, so unless the guard knows something's funny then they won't suspect a thing. Through interactions with the defective workers, especially in terms of whether they sympathize or, worse, fraternize with them, the Government can assess whether the guards should be transferred as a patient, but it's a complicated process.
>>What's important, for those of you thinking about making a defective guard, is that only you will know that the guard is defective... unless you allow them to cotton onto the situation because they're either observant or paranoid. If the guard has reached the stage where they're already being punished on the job, feel free to DM me so we can work out some plot points for you!So... how does the Government monitor everyone?Because CCTV footage is expensive to install everywhere and is, quite frankly, something that the Government thinks is overrated, everyone has a microchip surgically implanted into them! Ordinarily, the Government and the guards would be the only ones privy to this information... but if your character is a defective worker and has already undergone torture and/or had to be knocked unconscious for whatever reason, they'll know that shocks can be administered through the nape, which is where the microchip is embedded. Because it's been there from birth and has bound itself with the spine, there's no way of removing it without making yourself a quadriplegic or, worse, vegetative/dead. However, there are ways to temporarily disable it, but that will be a plot point for another time.
>>The microchip records everything from your heart rate to your location within the Government's territory, so the only thing it lacks is visuals. Even so, it's pretty simple to figure out what you've been doing based on the readings they get from the microchip... so no matter whether you're napping on the job, having dirty thoughts or trying to hide, the Government will know.Which block(s) correspond to which job(s)?More detailed information will be provided in the info thread, but the general idea will be that the easiest (or less harmful/physically demanding) jobs will be at the beginning of the alphabet, whilst the grittier/more dangerous jobs are at the latter end. For instance, the Government occupies Block A, children are brainwashed and trained in Blocks I-J, and reformed (?) defective workers are assigned to Block Z for forays into uncharted territory for new resources or living spaces (or just to catch an exotic disease that kills them painfully; it's debatable at times).coding by Kuro, Chia or whatever the hell you wanna call me. either way, it's mine //hisses - lmao still my aka C h i a R o s e K u r o ' s codeBase Code Appraisal
