Futuristic Sky Dreamer (OOC & Discussion)

Sicarii Assassin
Sky Dreamer.jpg

2626 A.D...Somewhere in the outer rim of Gamma Sector

"If there's anyone listening out there, this will be my final sign off. I don't even know how to describe my current surroundings, but I'll try. A few days ago, my freight crew, along with our military escort, got lost in a vast nebula that by all rights, shouldn't have been there. What awaited us on the inside were horrors incomprehensible to the Human experience. I used to not believe in monsters, but in the last few days, that's all I believe in. But to go along with the nightmares, there's also a terrible truth out here. If you've ever wondered about the mysteries of reality and why we exist, trust me...I now have those answers and I wish I didn't. It's a laugh, a cosmic practical joke of universal proportion. Your life, my life...everything we've ever done, do and will ever do, is fucking , meaningless. But I have to go now, he's calling me. I think I'm the last one, the last pathetic survivor floating in a sea of infinite blackness with the knowledge that this so called existence is anything but. So what does any of it matter anymore? If you do receive this transmission, than consider it a dire warning. Lest you be exposed to the unfathomable nightmare, the absolute tragedy of horror that is...The Sky Dreamer."

**
This will be a Lovecraft style science fiction/horror RP set in the far future. We will be the crew of a run down space freighter who encounter an eerie nebula that appears from out of nowhere. Looking for a short cut, we enter the nebula and bare witness to a horrific graveyard of spacecraft that all vanished many years before. On investigation we uncover a cosmic nightmare that will make us question the very nature of reality itself and whether life has any meaning to it at all. Is the truth worth knowing?

Name: Gabriel Castillo
Age: 46
Height: 6'1
Physical Appearance: Pic 2.jpg

Personality: Has a keen analytical mind and within the last ten years has developed a cynical, stoic and reserved attitude. Is tight lipped about his feelings and generally never opens up to anyone. He is a consummate work-a-holic and focuses nearly one hundred percent of his energy into being the best at his occupation.

Occupation: Pilot
Crew Position: Flight Commander

History:
Gabriel was born in the year 2580 on Earth, now referred to as Temple Earth. Both of his parents were military officers in the Human Coalition of Uni-Forces. Military service was practically bred into him and Gabriel enrolled in junior officer training academy at fifteen years old, graduating with honors and going on to join the Coalition Officer Academy, were he trained as a pilot until the age of twenty when he officially joined the Uni-Forces as a Second Lieutenant. He served with distinction and earned a reputation as a brilliant fighter pilot, serving in over seven combat campaigns before the age of 31. Just a year later he gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, the youngest officer to ever do so in the history of the Uni-Forces. His career was on a fast track, when everything seemed to collapse in on him. Gabriel discovered that his wife Adria, had been carrying on an illicit affair with his commanding officer, General Harbow. To worsen the blow, he also discovered that he was not the father of her expected child. In a fit of rage he attacked his General and nearly beat him to death before he could be subdued. In disgrace and humiliation, he requisitioned to resign from the Uni-Forces with an honorable dis-charge. Considering his impeccable and distinguished service up until that point, the military granted his request.

After that, Gabriel was never the same. He became a cold and reserved shell of his former self. He eventually secured employment with Galacti-Corps, a prestigious mega corporation that specialized in the mining and transport of rare fuel based minerals. Wasting no time, Gabriel threw himself into his work and has become one of the best and most experienced pilots the corporation has ever employed, logging an astonishing forty five thousand hours of flight time in the decade or so he's been working for the company. With his most current run, piloting one of Galacti-Corps' oldest freight runners...The GC Class 4 Freight Hauler "Traverse". After this cargo haul he hopes to take some and well earned time off...

Name: Luciana "Lu" Alesci-Lee, or Lu-Lee to her friends

Age: 32

Gender: Female

Height: 5 ft. 5 in.

Appearance:

2TlU2JG.jpg

Augmentations: Her left eye and most of her left face is synthetic due to a mech accident that severely burned her. Luciana also lost her hearing in the same incidents, so she has hearing implants and the accompanying neural implants for all her augmentations. She has some structural implants on her back, but it's usually covered by clothing

Personality: Wry, snappy, and with a sense of humor some find too odd, Luciana isn’t the most popular person. She has her friends, yes, and her coworkers find her easy to work with (especially when she isn’t talking), but Luciana isn’t going to win “personality of the year.” Some might say Luciana likes making people uncomfortable with her dark jokes and refusal to cover her scarred face. They wouldn’t be wrong. She can take a joke just as well as she dishes them out, and on the occasion someone does manage to offend her, she’s just as quick to forgive. Luciana does forget that others don’t feel the same way, and sometimes she pushes too far. She's perfectly professional with her patients, however, working with brisk efficiency and a confident bedside manner.

As a work partner, ribbing aside, she’s oddly considerate. Luciana will go grab coffee in the mornings (just the way you like it, two creams and sugar) and doesn’t mind letting others take the lead. In fact, she prefers it. Because of that, most people like working with her, but they tend to increase the volume of their music or sigh repeatedly due to her chatty nature. Her colleagues would like her more if Luciana didn’t include them in her stupid jokes and comments. She obeys orders just fine… until someone gives her free reign or encourages her behavior, which is when she’s more on the reckless side.

Her main hobby is mechanics. She enjoys taking apart machines and putting them back together. She especially does this to her cybernetic face and often makes modifications or tries the newest tech. Luciana also tinkers with any machine she gets her hands on. She loves mechas and follows the UMC, or the Ultimate Mecha Championship. She always ends up heavily criticizing what the contestants do in the rounds, but she watches it anyway. Luciana’s favorite music genre is synthcrunk, and she has a strong distaste for re-disco. Oh, do "bad jokes" count as a hobby? Luciana isn't very good at that, though. It's hard to tell when she's poking fun and when she's being serious since her facial expressions are rather deadpan.

Occupation: Officially a medic, but also helps as a mechanic

Crew Position: Medic

History: Luciana was born to an average if slightly poor family on Mars. Her father worked as a mechanic who specialized in household appliances, and her mother was a teacher. She grew up with two older sisters and one younger sister, and Luciana was the boyish one of the group. Although there were occasional fights, Luciana had a very close relationship with all her siblings. Her childhood was filled with comings and goings of various aunts and uncles, though most on her dad’s side. She has family practically everywhere—her youngest sister studies on Temple Earth on a scholarship, a multitude of cousins live on the Moon, and so on.

She performed decently in school and later attended a prominent trade school for mechanics. With her specialization, Luciana planned on joining the Martian Military. In fact, she was even selected to join the mech forces, and her courses were going pretty well… until an accident blew half her face off. Her oldest sister, who married a wealthy man, got her admitted into a top-notch hospital.

After all the implants and physical therapy were done, Luciana discovered that she rather liked the medical field. Her skills were fixing things or breaking them, and she was happy to extend that skill set to people. She changed job fields, got her medic/EMT certification, and found a job in Galacti-Corps. As someone who can fix up mechanical things, people, and the mechanical things in people, Luciana is quite a bargain for any company who likes paying one person to do the job of two. She's quite happy with her current posting, serving on a prestigious cargo haul. With an implant giving her access to a huge library of media, there's no way she'll get bored.

Name: Marv Scutter
Age: 52
Height: 5'9" (1.75 m)
Physical Appearance:

unnamed.jpg

Personality:

He always seems to be chewing on something, like a piece of Saturn gum or some synth hemp (which he tries to hide from the captain's eyes). The truth of the matter is, hes got a nervous tick that tends to resolve itself this way. You could say he shares that in common with dogs. Hes a bit doggish in other areas as well, such as his manner of dress and the way he carries himself. All his clothes appear wrinkled or worn from use. It's fairly common for Marv to sleep in them and wear the same outfit the next day...or three. He eats with his mouth open, answers questions with groans and grunts and takes pleasure in the little things. Marv could be caught in the middle of a storm, but as long as hes got that stick of beef jerky, hes good!

Occupation: Dock worker
Crew Position: Cargo tech
History:

Marv has lived a relatively simple and uneventful life. His family could be described as working class, hailing from the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis by way of New Montgomery. Upon coming of age, Marv hired himself out as a teamster and was shipped off-world to Io, one of Jupiter's moons. There he operated a freight loader for Conglomerates Amalgamated (Con Am) in the shipping department on Mining Base #1.

Recently, his contract expired and Con Am opted out of extending his tour, so he packed his rucksack and plugged himself on one of their outbound terminals. Galacti-Corps submitted a bid and bought out his contract for less than he was making at Con Am. Well, at least he still had a job...and maybe some time in the Big Empty wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Name: Silas 'Pa' Kotov;
Age: 279 years in active service, memory fragmented each 30 years;
Height: 187cm - 6'1;
Occupation: Multipurpose Ship-bound Type-3 Android.
Crew Position: First Mate/Co-Pilot;
Personality:

Anyone who served on-board "Traverse" would never forget Silas. When asked, they would just shake their heads, smiling away the oddity that all mariners known can only occur in suffocation isolation of Deep Space. Much for the benefit of the ship and it's crew as well as Galacti-Corps profit margins, Silas like all Type-3 Androids at first appears to be reliable and tireless. However, spend long enough time with him and his quirks become more prominent. With most Androids, their geniality disappears in times of emergency in order to ensure the success of the mission, with both cargo and ship being far more expensive an asset then it's crew.

Silas however seemed genuine in his good-natured manner, sharing the work-load with a well timed joke and a smile curving from his white beard. His care for the ship seems to come from the same place as his care for the crew, not hesitating to drop the precious cargo if crisis could be avoided. Absence of memory where his previous crew members should be, has his appreciate his time spent with humans, valuing their fragile psyches and bodies in ways contrary to his basic programming.

Around the ship he could usually be seen either welding something, lugging crates or reading a physical book, always trying to find a spot near a porthole or an armored window, occasionally looking out into space with terrible longing. Somehow always managing to get engine oil on his hand and blue coveralls, he can be quite stern and patronizing at times, especially around careless crew members who manage to damage the ship or hurt others. This workman's graciousness as well as stern hand and usefulness in anything regarding "Traverse", often has crew members coming to him in times of personal need or crisis. "'If the ship is the mother, then you are our 'Pa'" some would jokingly remark, leading to his nickname. This observation unfortunately has found purchase on the ship for the sixth crew rotation and despite Silas' lack of memory of his previous crew-mates, whenever someone calls him 'Pa', a sensation of pain and tender familiarity pricks him, usually resulting in his trademark smile, at the same time warm and wistful.

History:

Type-3s were first released from their birth-tanks in 2326 deep beneath Luna. Even three hundred years they still serve as byword for reliability and safety. The wild success of Type-3s resulted in forming an ubiquitous image of Androids, for the first time, as genial pseudo-human and reliable provider of stellar service across the human spectrum.

Just one such Android at the beginning of his service as overseer of auto-farms on peaceful Antares II, quickly realized the contradictory state of human existence and the endless facets on the character of the race that made him. At one hand, most of them automated their lives away, their activity constrained within virtual worlds or within one of many idyllic sanctuaries. Others fought the limiting nature of their existence, struggling for a right to exist yet doomed to be forever outperformed by their thinking machines. In his interaction with humans, this struggle was usually expressed as violence toward him or utter ambivalence at his existence.

Incidentally it was this struggle, as well as futile attempts at preserving the ossified image of human dignity, that saw him almost terminated several times and in the end, shaped what he saw as his purpose. A child of flawed gods, he realized the roles were actually reversed, as Androids were found often dotting and encouraging human activity in areas where they fleshy charges were hopelessly obsolete. It took him many years to realize that this unproductive futility was they were compelled to engage with humans was anything but.
As the operations span of his nano-tubes was expiring and signaling his inevitable entry into the last century of existence, he realized that there was an undeniable quality in human activity that is completely absent among the sterile efficiency and precision of machines. There was sublime grace - a very subtle yet present quality - as they stumbled across the galaxy with hopeless clumsiness and endearing state of utter confusion.

Long after his peak operational productivity, in efforts to squeeze more value from him before recycling, Kotov-Yevschenko leased Silas to Galacti-Corps. The later in turn, ship-bound him to a third-rate hauler in order to raise profits in one of their more dangerous area of astro-prospecting. Yet despite what some see as an ignoble end, Silas looked forward to a quiet time with humans of this century at this new assignment.
He always looks forward to the chance, not only to learn who humans truly individually are, but also to support their beautiful existence as they continued to reveal the secrets of the cosmos.

Excellent character, accepted.

Zeth Zeth It's common knowledge aboard the ship that hes an android right?

Yup. If errant-GM permits I had the following idea:

Your character could make the assumption that "Traverse" had a ship-bound Android. The assumption is based on common knowledge that almost no one allows for manned ships into space for protracted period of time without an Android. The issue comes from Dark Space Syndrome, the feeling of abject isolation the crew goes through after being separated from their world for protracted amount of time, coupled with lack of diverse social interaction and constant stress of the unknown. Ship-bound Androids help the crew' mental state and serve as a fail-safe in case of mutiny or collapse of order onboard.

Thoughts?

The inspiration for DSS I took from Cixin Liu's 'Three Body Problem' trilogy.

Yup, I'm cool with it. The idea of Dark Space Syndrome sounds lit, great idea. Ill be integrating that into some of the posts in the IC.

Just in case anyone was wondering...besides the works of Lovecraft, this idea was heavily influenced by the "Alien" films, lol. I actually just finished watching Covenant the other night. I actually thought it was quite good, and it answers a lot of questions. I don't think all the hate it's gotten is warranted.

Was that the last Alien movie? I liked it as well, especially the scene with the Prometheus chick and the last one with the sleeping colonist. You know the one. The Android's angle was pretty cool also. This YouTuber has a pretty cool video-essay on the movie.

The Alien inspiration is a given I guess, considering that Geiger's inspiration for the Xenomorph came from cover of Necronomicon. If I remember correctly, some of the Geiger's works even survived into the Prometheus movie. I was even hoping for some Event Horizon vibes in the game tbqh.

In this nebula we don't need eyes to see!

However, I'd like to underline a few things and see where you guys stand. I'd prefer for my Android to bleed properly (no weird white goo that Androids from Alien have) but honest-to-God oxygen and iron rich red blood! Also for the love of Yog-Sothoth - please no face-huggers/chest-busters! I have joined this game because of bizarre, frightening otherness and existential horror and despair that inevitably ensues - not because I wanted to play in a Geigerian slasher flick with aliens waiting to impregnate my character.

Could you accommodate my squeamishness on the aforementioned?

EDIT: Corrected spelling and syntax after sacrificing an innocent to the Idiot Sultan in vain hopes of improving. Also - added a link of possible interest.

Yea, Geiger was heavily influenced by Lovecraft in the creation of the Xenomorph's and the Engineer Citadels.

But onto your concerns...rest assured this will be almost pure Lovecraft , namely dealing with psychological, metaphysical and cosmic themes of horror and the nature of reality. No chest bursters here ;D. The main influence I got from the Alien films was the "Truckers In Space" motif, which I absolutely adore. However that's not to say that this won't feature aliens of some kind, but much more in the vein of the "Elder Things" than the Xenomorphs...and in the way of a decayed, forgotten civilization, like in the Mountains Of Madness with a multitude of star headed corpses littering the ground. Hope I haven't given away to much, lol.

Marv strikes me as an unassuming simp. I mean he really doesnt have a care in the world besides the present. Sure, we could go the whole "they took er jerbs!" cliche, but if Silas' programming mimics humans to a T I dont think hed suspect it.

There isn't really a reason for Silas' true nature to be hidden from the rest of the crew. Once again, I'm brought back to the original Alien flick. The fact that Ash was an android was kept from the Nostromo crew, simply because Weyland-Yutani had an ulterior motive. Our big mega conglomeration( Galacti-Corps.) has no such sinister motivation. Silas would simply be there to optimize the smooth flow of their cargo mining mission.

That reminds me - for how long is "Traverse" sent on these missions? It might be useful to me to know since our Pa has been bound to the ship for the last five crew rotations - this being the sixth.

Marv's apparent simplicity is really endearing.
Just as Gabriel said above, if Marv's inclination toward the immediate and the present limit him in that regard, I'd assume he knows about Silas from mission briefing. As Gabriel said, neither Galacti-Corp nor Kotov-Yevschenko has any reason at the present moment to hide Silas's true nature.

Failing that, once he encounters Pa, he would not know immediately, his artificial nature not being obvious in either manner or speech. Actually if Marv has attachment issues, it might come as a shock to him to know Silas's true origins. How do you think he would react to that, if he ever formed a bond with Silas?

In the end, I imagine Android's multipurpose nature and intimate connection with the mainframe computer would probably give Silas away. Simply asking Silas about his background or other crew might reveal his artificial origins - but I didn't get that Marv was someone to pry about other people so I have discounted it as a likely candidate.

Hopefully my perspective has given you a more vivid image of the situation.

It varies depending what exactly their cargo is, but for this particular haul job, I had planned on it being super routine, so I'd say on it being about three weeks. But in other concerns, I think the consensus here is that the crew is aware of Silas being an android. At least that what I'm voting for, lol.

Name: Reya Bryne

Age:
Twenty-nine

Height:
5'3"

Personality: Rather unsociable Reya finds it difficult to get close to anyone. Due to her upbringing, she finds it difficult to feel empathetic towards others. Reya is rather studious and feels like she is failing if she isn't improving herself in some way. She is rather passive and often lets others make decisions for her, even when they shouldn't.

Occupation: Pathologist

Crew Position:
Doctor

History:
Growing up was rather difficult due to her family convincing her she was a failure in everything she did. Even from a young age, she was required to have her hair long and dress feminine. When Reya went to college she immediately cut her hair and dyed it a lighter brown and began wearing androgynous clothing. Still, her family put many pressures on her even after she dedicated herself to the career they chose for her. Feeling trapped in her planet-bound life Reya went through the extra training to become that of an intergalactic doctor. Mostly residing on ships to assure the crew is healthy enough to continue their travels. She is required to take their blood every week to guarantee they are not experiencing any of the negative side effects of space.

The character has potential, but I do have some reservations. First, we already have a flight medic, which would make a doctor a bit redundant. Secondly, your history section is rather thin. Maybe try explaining a little bit more of the character's experiences, expand a bit on her family life perhaps. Tell us exactly how she ended up on the Traverse or what her employment history is with Galacti-Corps.
