History
In the middle of the 21st century, deep examination of the human mind became the central focus of debate, due to the advent of a special sleep study device known as the Hourglass. This machine, in its early stages, was capable of inducing deep sleep instantaneously, and accurately recording and simulating the brainwaves during the REM portion of sleep, recognized as the point during which the mind experiences dreams and nightmares. From sleep learning to dream therapy, a multitude of potential applications arose from the success of the Hourglass, and its practical use began to spread throughout the fields of medicine and science. As with any new and unprecedented technology however, the focus soon shifted to militarization, and not long after its journey into mass production, the Hourglass was ushered into a new age of warfare.
It was discovered that the Hourglass could be used for subliminal manipulation, similar to hypnotism, by inputting commands into a person’s dream-state. These commands could override a person’s natural instincts and behavior during their waking hours, driving them to attack and kill others without pause, or even commit suicide. Terrorist groups used this method to hack into Hourglass terminals, causing mass murders and suicides on a scale previously unheard of, numbering in the thousands. With the danger of dream technology now common knowledge, movements to dismantle and ban the use of the Hourglass arose, putting pressure on the various nations around the world to halt their production. Finally, a decade after its creation, the use of the Hourglass was no more, and REM terrorism slowly drew to a halt… for the moment, at least.
The Field of Dreams
You awaken in a boundless field laden with gorgeous flora, surrounded by hundreds of people you’ve never seen before. Everyone appears just as confused as you are, being lost among unfamiliar faces in a mysterious land. You could have sworn you’d just fallen asleep in your bed, ready to move on to a new day, but instead you’re here. You seem to have full control of your body and senses, but the scene can’t possibly be reality. What awaits you in this field of dreams?
