It was an almost unusually joyful time for the kingdom, the return of the prince marked a momentous occasion for all. For nearly seven years had had been away studying, traveling to different kingdoms to learn more of the world. It had taken nearly a year for the king to approve the expedition, with a returned promise that the prince would buckle down into his duties upon arriving home. He would be expected to show that his travels had been beneficial to the kingdom, how he would do that was a mystery.

The Princess hardly cared about all of that, simply thrilled that her brother was back home. She had missed him so, which was why she had stayed in his room until all hours of the night begging for story after story about his travels on his first day home. Eventually, during one of the stories, she had simply fallen asleep. He must have carried her back to her room, or had a guard do it, because that was where she awoke. Tucked in carefully, and changed into something suitable for bed. That had probably been done by one of her ladies-in-waiting. Either way, she had thought nothing of the whole thing beyond apologizing to her brother.

The day after his return there had been a party in his honor, a grand affair that had been in the works before he had even arrived. For some reason there were a large batch of eligible princesses from other kingdoms. Women, girls, who would have made an excellent match for the prince. The king and queen, of course, would deny that this was intentional. Not that anyone dared question them on if there was anything planned for the evening. Still, he would have disappeared at some point in the night. None of the invited ladies seemed to have been missing from the affair, so who he was with was quite the mystery...

It had been a rather dull evening for Vesper, with little to do outside of look pretty. No one from their own court would fuss with her much, and no interesting suitors were around. If nothing else she was allowed to leave early, proper appearances done to return to her room for some time practicing with her harp. A dull affair by her standards.

After a few days things would have settled back into a comfortable rhythm, a level of normalcy within it all. Vesper would return to her nearly idle time, as she went about a series of 'hobbies' she had claimed. Practicing her music, tending to a garden she had started, and then finally making her way to the library for a couple of books. Fairy tales, things she had already read a few dozen times over. Nothing of actual substance, of actual merit, why would she..? Nothing was expected of her, just to have a pretty face and be prepared for her role in the future whenever they found a worthwhile offer for her hand.

She was only in the library for a few moments when she discovered a fatal flaw in the plan of her book collection, just pausing to look around. The ladder was no-where to be seen, and most of her favorites were on higher shelves. Why she had never had them moved lower was certainly a question, one she probably wouldn't have answered, but as it stood... she could not reach her books. Requesting someone to bring a ladder would have been a simply enough option, but not one that she thought of right away. No, instead it was something else she requested when she called upon a maid.

"You... wish for me to fetch the Royal Mage...?" The maid seemed a tad nervous, some were when it came to anything related to magic, a slight nod from the princess before an expectant look would send the maid rushing off to collect the man. Unfortunately Vesper had neglected to say what for, and all the maid would have would be a location, and a summons.
