This roleplay is set in the Kosmos, a universe where souls are split into light and dark, where the stars in the sky are fragments of other worlds, and where a person's mere existence is the product of an ancient and ongoing war between Dark and Light. Players will be taking the roles of individuals training to become Keepers- people that can manipulate the power within their souls to fight off the forces of the Ixii collective. On your journey, you will not only be guided by your mentors and masters, but by the GM, your own sense of adventure, and even the story itself. You will face many enemies, not all of them Ixii. You will face many challenges, not all of them physical. When you are ready, continue reading, and we shall learn the true nature of the soul.
Soon to come. We shall see if we need them.
All credit for the tab layout goes to Kuronoyomihime and the character sheet to AgWordSmith . This page would be a lot more unsightly if it were not for their workshops. Their works were modified and rearranged for the purposes of this RP. You should check the places and people out.
In the beginning, there were no souls, and no forms to contain them. It was only after the introduction of Light to Darkness that the soul and life itself had began to form. Light first came as a whole entity, only to be shattered by Darkness in their eternal struggles. These fragments came to form the hearts of the worlds that dot the Kosmos- we call them stars. Not only did they create stars and worlds, but the smallest of these fragments created a soul, and subsequently a form to contain it. This creation set in motion the ratio of Light and Dark that is required for most life to exist. There is to be only a sliver of Light- reminiscent of the stars in the night sky- among a sea of Darkness. Any tremendously larger amount leads to imbalance, and the eventual destruction of that soul and life. Darkness is the opposite, as it must overwhelm and choke at the Light, however, too little causes it to be burned away by the Light, where too much snuffs Light out.
Humans are somewhat flexible with their souls, with each one having a unique balance of Light and Dark that must be upheld. This malleability and exclusivity allows for the uniqueness of personality, expression, and rational thought. For humans, Light represents calmness, rational thought, intelligence, and overall "humanity". Dark however, represents emotion, brashness, and other primal and instinctual parts of the human psyche. An imbalance from the normal bias, called the soul bias, means an individual will begin to show traits typically representative to that of the element they are not biased towards. For instance, a Dark biased individual would give rise to Light personality traits if their soul was to become imbalanced.
However, not all life follows these rules. Beings that live between the worlds known as Ixii only have Dark within their souls, and feed upon the darkness around them in order to survive. This includes the darkness within a person's soul. When an individual of low to average strength of soul loses the Dark or Light in their soul, they simply cease to be. Their bodies disintegrate, as without Dark there is no anchor to existence, and without Light there is no form for the Kosmos to recognize. However, when an individual with a strong soul loses balance of their soul, one of two things occurs. Either the Light in their soul burns away the Dark, their body, and their physical existence; or the Dark overcomes the Light within their soul, uses their body as a shell for something greater, and produces a terrible beast. The former creates a Saint, where the latter creates a Husk and a Reaper.
A Saint is but a thought, as their detachment from Darkness makes their forms less real than the mind and eye can comprehend. Do not be deceived by this, as they do not need true physical forms to cause unnerving harm to those that come across them. They possess avatars that serve as surrogate bodies for their physical dealings with life, and often take forms that betray and confuse the mind just as their true existence does. In addition to this, they wield what is known as a Dogma. These Dogmas are physical manifestations of their thoughts, and act as barriers to those that would attempt to destroy their avatars. Not only that, but the Dogma is always reminiscent of the mindset of the person that once was, and contains fragments of their values and personalities before their transformation. Individuals with weak souls may become twisted by the Dogma of a Saint, and become smaller perversions of their avatars, known as Zealots. Saints are the most powerful threats Keepers can come across, and should only be engaged in groups. Exercise extreme caution, even around those that are seemingly docile. One can never trust the eldritch mind of a Saint, as the destruction of all Darkness- even that which dwells within life- is their true goal.
Husks are the product of an individual losing all of the Light in their soul, and becoming the host of Darkness. The body of such an individual loses all color, becoming a pale shade only colored by their clothes, hair, and dark circles around their eyes. A Husk has little other purpose than to wander around, lashing out at any creature that gets in their way. It has been observed that Husks roam towards places that they once had a connection to in their past lives. It is then that a process known as Catharsis occurs, where the Husk releases all denied emotions and primal urges held within the former human. During this process, a Reaper claws itself out of the Husk, often destroying it and anything near it with its emergence.
When a Reaper emerges, the fabric of the Kosmos begin to fold in around it, warping in unnatural ways to accommodate such a wellspring of Darkness. A Reaper's presence is of such a force upon the Kosmos that they produce something known as Deathmarch, a scent coupled with an auditory cue that both draws in and raises the levels of Darkness within individuals with weak souls. These individuals are led to their eventual deaths, be it due to them being killed by the Reaper or due to the eventual transformation into an "infertile" Husk. Not only that, but the surge in Darkness causes Ixii to be drawn to the world in which the Reaper emerged, adding the chance for many more to emerge. When enough Reapers converge upon a world, they can form what is known as a Grim Reaper, and they are powerful enough to consume the heart of a world, snuffing it out and ending its existence. It is due to these facts that all Keepers are advised to monitor their souls, as most Reapers come to be after extended combat with Ixii or other Keepers.
With these fates for humans, it is known by Keepers that the soul must remain in balance. The average person, however, needn't worry about such things unless one of the many dangers of the Kosmos makes itself present. It is common knowledge among Keepers that a simple phrase allows for much easier tactics against enemies. Light grants existence, where Dark allows it. This means that the more Dark is in one area, the more "real" it is. However, nothing truly exists unless there is Light to challenge it. This also works the other way around- Light serves as the concept, where Darkness serves as the physical existence. As such, Ixii, Reapers, and Husks are weaker to Light infused attacks, as it makes them less real. Saints and Zealots are weaker to Dark infused attacks, as they make them real enough to take substantial damage.
With this information in mind, you are now ready to learn about the Kosmos and the nature of the worlds the Ixii have targeted.
The Kosmos is the term for the collection of worlds in the known universe. Each world is formed of a massive fragment of Light made real by encroaching levels of Darkness. These two coalesce and create a world, its land, and eventually its people and places. From the surface of a world, other worlds can be seen in the sky, and are known as stars to those that don't know the true nature of the Kosmos. Separating each world is a sea of Darkness that threatens to consume them, and within that Darkness dwell the Ixii Collective and their allies. More advanced worlds have created a system of rails known as the Stellar Railway, a system stretching across many of the known worlds that allows for quick and relatively safe travel between one world and the next. Like humans and other forms of life, a world has a precarious balance that must be upheld in order to survive. Luckily for the Keepers of those worlds and others, a world's soul- the world's heart- contains enough light to create a localized field of reality in comparison to the Darkness around it. However, should the Ixii consume too much Darkness around a world, its heart will expand rapidly, causing the quick and fiery death of a world. On the opposite end of the scale, a Grim Reaper consuming the heart of a world causes a slow and smothering death at the hands of the weight of Darkness.
The level of technology on each world varies, and only the most advanced bear stellar rails. It is comparable to what we would call modern technology, only slightly more advanced. Worlds that are not connected must be accessed through specially designed vessels or railcars that can bear not only the weight of the Darkness, but possible Ixii attacks. A certain level of speed and durability is required for such a craft, as without a stellar rail, there is no light to ward off the Darkness. Certain vessels are capable of generating levels of Light to protect the craft, but they are few and far between, and only used by Keepers for special missions.
Each world, if they have them, trains Keepers differently. Some teach them to rely off of their powers for combat, others teach that martial prowess with weapons is key to defeating an Ixii, and others still preach that their job as a Keeper is not to fight- but to restore balance in other ways. With that in mind, you are ready to learn of your role- that of a Keeper of Light and Dark.
Keepers are trained in various different ways, and as such each one has a unique fighting style. These styles are separated into four primary classes. Brawlers, Lancers, Guardians, and Magicians.
Brawlers are the most martial of the Keepers, summoning weapons and armor to deal with any threat that comes their way. They have a balanced way of fighting, and can be seen fighting on the defence and the offence. They can take a beating and dish it out, ensuring that the enemy is occupied for some time to come.
Lancers are the offensive evolution of Brawlers, as they can still summon equipment, but have a more offensive style of fighting. Their job is to strike at Ixii strongholds and hives to snuff out their forces before they can strike at worlds and stellar rails. They typically lack in durability, but make up for it with speed, wits, or a combination of the two.
Guardians are defence based fighters, preferring to fight in familiar territory or defending allies. They tend to split the difference between weapon and power heavy fighting styles, and usually boast defences or measures that make them a hard target for enemies of balance to take down.
Magicians can choose to specialize in either offence or defence, but either way, they are a power focused class. As such, they feign weapons entirely in pursuit of mastering control over their soul's inner power. They boast powerful spells and magicks that shake the foundations of the Kosmos when used with enough power, and their utility can change the course of a battle.
Each Keeper starts with what are called Light Levels and Dark Levels, representing the balance of their souls. For this RP's purposes, we will start with a value between 5 and 10 for both of the stats, for a total of 15 points spent. This represents the starting balance of the Keeper Initiate's soul, and whichever number that is higher should be listed as that character's soul bias.
