An Introduction

mbx_vol_03_02_red_rain_neo_final_by_nisachar-d56b7h9.jpg

The year is 3023 AD, a golden era of spacefaring and technology is upon us. Humanity has long past discovered FTL technology via warp lanes, and the stars are now open to everyone. But with this came the discovery that we are not alone. Many species and empires already inhabit the vast galaxy, and that shattered humanity's dreams of creating a galactic empire. It is generally peaceful in the galaxy, even the more militaristic empires coming together in loose alliances in order to ensure interstellar travel is safer and more accessible. However, space is vast and empty, and in the voids between boundaries, xenophobia, violence and cold war is common. That's the thing with space, it's really really big, and in such expanses, anything is possible, and this era has proved nothing but that. Where the unknown is possibly your worst enemy, and even the known cannot be trusted, most choose to stay within the boundaries of their respective nations, hesitant to travel the unknown, but there have always been a few different ones.

History

The presence of other spacefaring empires and species has not stopped man from trying to establish empires of their own in space, and they grew, colonizing planets left and right. But the democratic government we had in place failed, and the empire of man was split into two in the year 2976 AD, The Regency of Man, and The Tervius Federation. The Regency of Man, a technocratic empire with power in the hands of the wealthy and intelligent was in a battle to fix what the democratic government had left behind, but the new empire carved out through years of war was an unstable one, individual warlords constantly threatening to secede from under the military despot who led the freedom struggle. The realisation interstellar travel brought for most people was the true insignificance of their presence. Men used to have a sense of entitlement in being the only sentient species in their little corner of the galaxy, but FTL travel changed that feeling to a sort of nihilism, with the common man realising a need beyond the need to grind out every day in order to eke out any sense of meaning in life. And thus, an era of heroism and fame began, much like the old days of Odysseus and the Ancient Greeks, with individuals seeking adventures and many becoming practically demigods. Some choose to do this under the banner of their nations, and some choose the opposite, gaining glory and repute in the shadows, but in this dog-eat-dog world,
kleos, or personal glory is the only thing that seems to matter. Entertainment is again the opiate of the masses, with grand gladiator-type arena battles back in fashion, and an entire culture building around this.

However, this hedonistic way of life has been brought to it's knees and a new era of war is about to enter, for there are rumors and whispers in the warp lanes that there is new type of enemy in the galaxy, a species not known to us before, and capable of wreaking havoc to a massive scale. Nobody knows where they've come from, who they are, but all we know is that they've started attacking The Hssilvir Tribes first, and they have weapons capable of taking over entire planets in a matter of months. The other known interstellar empires have come together to meet on the issue and do something before they too suffer the same fate.

Where We Begin

The Flitvar Alliance of Suns recently invited all the empire leaders to visit the beautiful planet of Kritor Ib for talks on what action is to be taken. In these talks, however it was mentioned by someone that there might exist a super weapon, lost technology from civilisations that died a long time ago, which might be what they need to destroy the foes.

However, war has always been a profitable enterprise, so there are many out to make sure the war keeps going on, at the cost of others. It has reached you through the grapevine that such a weapon might exist, something you desire for whatever reason, and though such "hysteria inducing" talks are strictly discouraged everywhere, you can't really talk about it, there is one place where everyone talks about everything, where freedom comes at the cost of security, and where nothing is impossible - Deep Space.
