The currency widely used among the civilized nations is the Denari Coin. The denari is a carry over from minted coins created by ancient civilization. Due to unknown minting processes, lost in time, the coins are counterfeit proof and magically resistant to any alterations. While the coin is no longer minted by any nation, due to its vast abundance, it maintains a stable value and is widely accepted.

Lore: Society
Aristocracy
The nobility of the world vary from nation to nation, in power and culture, but in terms of magic, there are a lot of commonalities. Magic is highly valued in aristocracy, such that the strength of one's house is often associated with their magical power and clout in magical society. Many noble families specialize in their own types of magic, but the larger ones spread out into several fields. Because of their regard of magic, almost all nobles have familiars. This has led the familiar of the founder of the house to become the symbol of the house.
Many noble families value the strengths of its members more than its bloodline. This has led some noble families to "adopt" commoner children who have a talent in magic, raising them as their own. Oftentimes, if the noble family is a declining one, or even one without a successor, they would make the child of the adopted their successor. Regardless, all children of noble families will be taught magic, combat, self defense, noble manners, etc. Many children are enrolled into noble academies that often double as magical academies. All nobles are expected to have least secondary school education, though those that are particularly talented will go on into university.

The Physics of Magic

Natural mana
Mana is the extra energy or element (academics are still not sure how to categorize it) that the earth produces as the tectonic plates, magma and mantle under the earth's crust moves.
The movements of the sea also generate a large amount of natural mana but it's unknown how to harness the less stable power that's produced by the seas and rivers without constant renewal of runes. Only the ancient city-states of Atlantis, Parthari and Glaciae have been known to have such advances in arcane arts. However, as we know from our historical texts, these city-states have been lost for over a millennia with their Library of the Maripaon (meaning "Common Seas Pact"). Due to these unfortunate circumstances most of the knowledge has been lost. Though, there have been some progress in rediscovery during the past few decades.
There is also a certain unknown amount of mana that reaches the earth after being produced by the celestial bodies in space. But this source of natural mana has never been safely and stably utilized in any civilization. The most astral natural mana that has been seen to be utilized is the rapid growth of enraged tree spirits caused by gathering the sunlight and mana from the sun.
Natural mana, whether those studied free floating in the air and sky or those soaked into the ground, has been studied to gather into streams. Earthbound natural mana has been studied to further condense into nodes called Ley Points. Ley Points have been studied to naturally move without giving clues to how or why it happens. However, drastic movements of Ley Points and Ley Lines have been observed to at least cause disturbances in nature. Usually these disturbances come in the form of natural disasters or mana sickness in more sensitive Familiars and magical creatures.

Mana in systems separate from natural mana systems
Plants and fungi: All living things have their own system of mana and set of "circuits". The mana system of plants and fungi, or any living organism that is deeply linked to something, are connected to whatever they draw nutrients from. Plants have been studied to both generate their own inherent mana through the circulation of their mana systems and draw from the natural mana from the sun and earth. Fungi have been studied to quickly draw up residual mana from the dead or living organisms that they're growing off of. Interestingly, they've also been observed drawing mana from the earth even when they're not drawing physical nutrients from it.
Those of the animal kingdom: Mana systems of those of the animal kingdom have systems that are separate and self-sufficient from the main systems of natural mana. Due to an biological-magical advancement in evolution (that has been theorized to have started when invertebrates came to be on our evolutionary tree), those of the animal kingdom have mana systems that can self-sufficiently generate mana on their own and are able to continue to do so even without the aid of natural mana later in life. In fact, particularly for humans, it's often more dangerous to attempt to draw from the natural mana directly than others of the animal kingdom. A trait unique to the animal kingdom, their mana systems grow more concentrated and advanced with age from self-advancement. This is unlike the mana systems of plants and fungi that rely on growth of mana through the drawing and storing of natural mana.
Familiars: Familiars to humans are like humans to the earth [1]. Like humans, they have their own mana systems that are technically separate from their Origin once they have been born, yet their mana systems reflect that of their Origin's. If the circulation of mana within their human's body stops (in death), that of the familiar stops and dies as well. This is also a consequence that happens to humans if their familiar dies. Additionally, the familiar's mana system is capable of drawing from natural mana without consequence as long as the rate of mana flow fits the capacity of the system without breaking it. Familiars of A rank and higher have been observed to be capable of "filtering" natural mana for their human to restore their human's mana system if they have been running on dangerously empty levels.
Mana storing gems: Mana stored in gems are still considered natural mana. These crystals can be of any material and are naturally formed when an unsaturated crystal absorbs and stores mana. But different materials have been studied to have different properties and capacities. The most abundant source of mana crystals are found in quarries in untapped, often national parks, ley lines or ley points.
[1] While not all living things are directly reliant on the natural mana's circulation within the earth. It's a known fact that these individual mana systems all reflect their loose or close connection to the earth. If the circulation of natural mana of the earth comes to a halt, the minor systems of mana in all life would come to a halt as well in reflection to the earth.

Invocation Magic (Ex Orationem Magica)
Invocation Magic is a set of magic that is orally casted. They are more colloquially known as spells. This method of magic is the first known and established system. There are many ways to cast it dependent on the language used, but it generally comes in the form of an aria, require a specific tone, pitch, and structure. In most cultures, the aria is a request or a prayer to a religious or cultural being of importance along with a set of instructions for what magic effect should occur. The magic performed draws from the user's own mana. This has led many arias to be phrased in the form of an offering of mana. There are a few other things of note with regards to Invocation Magic
A general rule is that the longer the aria, the more power the spell.
The magic is only casted upon the end of the aria, oftentimes marked by a change in intonation.
The speed at which an aria is chanted does not affect the magic.
Visualization seems to be key to invocation. More research is needed.
While Invocation Magic is performed via the vocalization of a spell, there have been myths and rumors of "chantless" invocation. Magicians who claim to be able to perform chantless usually are just chanting the aria under their breath. There have been documented cases where true chantless magic has been performed, though most scholars believe this to be a special property granted by their familiars.

Runic Magic (Ex Scriptem Magica)
Runic magic is the family of magic that forms through written simple or complex matrices. Warding, runic rituals, sealing arts and other fields of magic that utilize inscriptions to channel magic fall under this family of magic. Most academics agree that, while runic magic is considered arcane magic, this form of magic came to be much later than invocation magic. Much like how it's known that oral culture predates written culture.

Unlike invocation magic, runes do not vary between cultures other than the methodology of matrix structures. Runes are said to have been invented by a school of "seers" who were able to see the veins of magic that came with many simple invocation magics and modeled the runes after such pathways. It's likely the theory came to be because the function of runes is firmly rooted into their structure. The structure of the runes allow the specific properties they provide.

Other than runes, the properties of runic matrices change with the modern advances of the field. The factors that change the properties of runic matrices are:
Balance: Each rune has a different weight and polarity. With each layer, the matrix becomes more complex and becomes more challenging to properly balance to maintain stability. This is particularly important for matrices with the intent of long-term use.
Anchor material: Where the matrix is being applied becomes more and more important as the complexity of the matrix grows. Powerful wards need a sturdy, stable anchor to maintain its stability without destroying the anchor it is on.
Composition of medium: A more recent alchemical application and factor to runic matrices. The medium, or even mediums, that is used to inscribe the runic matrices also influences the properties. Engraved runic applications are more powerful in potency potential. However, the various inks give the user more options when balancing the properties of the matrix or when their time or space for the runes are limited.
(Human blood is not often used for runic applications due to standard inks used for runic applications being cheaper and more readily available than using human blood. Not to mention it's usually only used when making permissions in wards and runic curse wards.)

Familiars
Familiars are magical beings derived from a person's magic. They come into existence when a person's magical capabilities reach a certain threshold. The majority of the population can obtain familiars, but it requires that the person practice magic regularly and be of a certain magical maturity. Innately magical people can obtain these familiars early on, but generally nobles will obtain familiars in their childhood and commoners during adulthood. Familiars grow alongside their masters in time, as familiars themselves also need time to mature.

Familiars come in all different forms, with various personalities. It is unknown how these are chosen, but the general myths are that they promote growth in the master. Most scholars believe that they come from the master's own personality, and are a physical manifestation of their soul. In fact, if a familiar dies, the master dies as well. It is for that reason that almost all treats their familiars well.

Familiars are able to cast their own magic. In fact, some of the spells that are casted are completely unique and not able to be reproduced.
