Background Story: Joseph was delivered to a church in Tumbleweed New Austin when he was just a baby
As a result was raised in a strict religous environment that effected every aspect of his life including his name. In the orphanage punishments were both common and extreme, and were dealt out for the smallest of infractions. When Joseph was around fourteen one of the boys who he bunked with fell sick with tuberculosis. Despite living in a very dry and arid region where his lungs could dry out, they sent the boy to a church in Chicago where the priests could "pray the sins away." This was around the time Joseph no longer considered himself religious.

Joseph like many growing up in the church learned to read and write, both in English and Latin and as one of the older orphans usually read scripture during mass. A quick learner, Joseph found joy in reading and would sneak in dime novels and pulp fictions taking joy in the gratituous violence and sex in these novels. Other acts of rebellion included having relations with some neighborhood milkmaids and getting into fights. But little did he know about the violence that would fall upon him should he get caught.

When Joseph was seventeen the headmaster, Father Benham overheard him mentioning his lack of faith. Father Benham outraged dragged him into the dorms to beat him in front of the other children to make a point. However Father Benham gave Joseph a chance to confess all his sins. Joseph refused to submit and Father Benham tore up Joseph's bed and footlocker revealing his stash of "unholy" reading material.

Enraged Father Benham started beating Joseph with a rod and demanded the boy admit to his sins. Joseph refused to give in even after he was caughing up specks of blood. Eventually one of the other orphans told the Father that Joseph was fighting and that he often snuck out with neighborhood girls. But Father Benham refused to stop beating him. Joseph fearful for his life stood up to Father Benham and grabbed him by his collar, slamming him into the wall. Joseph being much bigger and stronger than the aging priest easily throttled him, snapping the priest's neck.

Horrified by what he did Joseph quickly packed his things and left. Luckily he was never pursued by the law, the orphans who saw him kill Father Benham said that the priest fell and broke his neck when he was beating Joseph. However the incident would continue to haunt Joseph, when his left lung was damaged heavily during the beating.

Joseph wandered for a few days until he reached Blackwater. Inspired by the dime novels he would read he applied for a position in the fledling police department, using Father Benham's last name as Joseph lacked one of his own. Fearful he would be turned down, he considered skipping town after his interview but he was accepted into the department. Joseph served in the Blackwater Police Department for over a decade watching as the city grew and prospered. He recognized the benefits of civilization, but also the problems it caused. He watched as factories poluted the countryside, how organized crime destroyed San Denis, and how the bandits of the wild west became more and more desperate.

During the fourteenth year of service, the Dutch Van Der Linde and his gang robbed a ferry, killing a woman and injuring several other people. It was at this point Joseph, fed up with decided to track the gang on his own accord, keeping close on their trail, even tracking them into the Grizzlies. Much to his dismay he lost them in the mountains, giving up as he decided to return to Blackwater.

Joseph would serve Blackwater for six more years until he retired spending his days on a small ranch in the Great Plains. Joseph lived peacefully enough, but was anxious. The world was changing around him and he was doing nothing. But when he looked at the land he owned he was content with the meager life he built for himself in the plains. Until the Skinners attacked.

They burned his home, killed his ranch hands and stole his cattle. Called to action, Joseph tracked the gang of Skinners, setting up an ambush on the coachways. The shootout was brutal, but he survived albiet bloodied and bruised. Desiring a return to a life of law he immediately applied to Bureau of Investigation where he served under ex-Pinkterton, Ross.

Joseph took part in the assault on John Marston's farm and was one of the men to gun down the famed criminal. Several years later when news of Ross's death reached the Bereau, he was tasked with leading the investigation. Joseph never liked Ross, he thought he was a snake and a cheat but he still chose to lead the investigation. He interviewed various persons all reporting a young man with a striking resemblance to the deceased John Marston. Joseph went to his higher ups claiming that John Marston's son was the most likely suspect but was shot down as Ross had reported no one survived the shootout.

Currently Joseph is fighting organized crime often recruiting gunslingers through means of threats, blackmail and bribes not unlike his precessor Ross
