What You'll Never Know

Aria came from a military family. Her dad, and two brothers were in tour abroad when the plague hits. Her mom was a house wife and was one of the thousands, if not, hundreds of casualties when the deadly virus started.

Being in a military, Aria's family moves a lot. They never stayed into one place for more than three years but she was okay with it. She was adventurous enough to see what was happening was fun and enjoyable though she did threw a tantrum or two every once in a while. Aria doesn't have a childhood like most of the other girls. When she was five, instead of playing dolls and fake tea parties, her dad was teaching her martial arts and how to survive in the wild. Instead of fairy tales, her dad used to tell her stories about weapons and war, and sometimes giving her tips on how to light a fire without a match.  When she was 12, she already knows how to drive, assemble a gun and even fire one. On her 16th birthday, instead of giving her a car, her dad gave her a Chinese Ring Knife and she was more than happy to accept it.

She never questioned her father's decision, and Aria was happy in what she was doing since she was with her brother. Her parents often fights a lot when her dad was giving her dangerous things such as butterfly knife and a Beretta. Despite of her up bringing, Aria is not aloof. She knows how to mingle but her mouth often gets her in trouble.

Due to moving a lot, Aria is homeschooled by her mom who was a university professor  before she married Aria's father.

Aria pushed herself hard so that she can enter a great university. With her hard work and diligence, she managed to enter at Stanford with a pre-law course. Her dream is to become an FBI agent someday then probably join NSA or CIA if things went on her way but then the dreadful and the most deadly virus plague the human race. Now, she is running for her life, surviving day after day with only her wits and weapon with no particular destination in mind.

This world was so, incredibly different from what it had once been. It was no longer even recognizable. What was left, what was all that was left behind, was nothing but a disgusting, decaying mess. Streets like veins, once flooded with people, now ran barren, with nothing but still cars and cluttered debris. Buildings sat, dim and gutted; their windows were broken out, their contents ravaged and spilling out. Even their wiring no longer hummed. It was so very, very quiet. While it once screeched and whooped with life, it was now absolutely quiet.

And that was how Natalia knew it was safe. The infected always wound up making a bunch of noises. Grunting and groaning, running into stuff. If she made sure to listen carefully, she could usually avoid running into any of the infected when she chanced runs into town to gather supplies. It was only her-- it had always been only her-- so it wasn't like she had to worry about too much. If she picked up enough stuff, it would be a while before she'd even have to make another run. Unfortunately, supplies were beginning to dwindle. Between her and the other survivors-- and she knew that there were others, she wasn't stupid, but she did try to avoid them as much as possible-- she didn't know how much longer the supplies that were left were going to hold out.

Which meant that she usually made it a point to gather all that she could carry, whenever she could find it. It wasn't like she could always find enough, though, and the last run hadn't gone so well. She'd found enough food to last her a couple of days, but by now, even trying to make it last, it was all almost gone. Another supply run was in order.

Natalia pulled the bandana up over her nose from where it had been resting around her throat, and nestled it right up under the goggles she'd found only a few weeks after this had all started. This wasn't ideal, obviously. Something to better protect her, that couldn't easily be yanked from over her mouth or nose-- that would be ideal. But until she found something ideal, this worked. (It wasn't smart to be picky during the end of the world, anyway.) For a moment longer, she listened, and then she straightened from her crouched position in the trees to cut across the field and into the small town.

It wasn't entirely likely that there would be a lot here, but something was better than nothing, at this point. Besides, small towns were usually a lot less threatening that the bigger cities, so she wasn't going to complain too much about it. Jut tightened her grip on one of the hatchets. She only pulled the second one from its spot at her thigh if it was necessary. A free hand was always helpful, after all. Like for dragging herself through a broken window of a mom-and-pop shop, being careful in case there were any jagged spots that she'd missed in the quick once-over she'd given it.

It was so quiet that the soft tapping of her boot soles was actually kind of unnerving. After all, if she could hear it, who else could?

Aria DeLaCour

"Shit." Aria quietly cursed as she placed back an empty box back on the shelf inside a tiny rundown store near the road. The windows were darkened by soot and dust, while the metal door was slightly ajar, a chain was hanging by the knob. It was a tiny convenience store in a middle of a deserted small town. Vines and trees were crawling and spouting in unlikely locations. It was as if Mother Nature's way of saying, 'Screw you..' As if the dreaded plague is not enough.

Aria made sure that the two story shop was uninhabited, with humans and infected alike. She checked every nook and cranny of the place, checked if there are other exits too before she started rummaging and looking for supplies.

When the deadly plague first started out, Aria tried to looked for a group. Her dad said to her once before that there are strength in numbers. Her mom was one of the people who was a casualty in the first wave of the disease so she tried to stick with others. But then something more terrible happened, more terrible than the plague, people turned on people. Normal and healthy people started attacking each other up to the point of killing without remorse when the supplies are beginning to shorten. People became savage, like they were lighting a match that could fire up their own extinction.

After what happened with the first group she's been in, which includes hacking and swinging of knives and a lot of shooting, Aria didn't try to look for another. Her dad and brothers were overseas, she tried contacting them before the whole communication system was dead but she didn't heard anything from their troop. And with that, she just started to roam around. Moving from place to place, all the while assuming that her whole family was gone. Aria lived a solitary life. She did happen to come across with others from time to time, humans and infected alike. But if she can, she usually go out of dodge. They were complications and baggage that she doesn't need.

With a father in the military, Aria learned a lot things from him. Things that helped her survive all through those months of constant danger. She knew what to prioritize first especially when scavenging. Water was always her number one priority, then shelter before food.

Rain pours from time to time, plus there were other ways but she had to boil them first then filter them before closing her eyes just to be able to drink it. Food is tough one too, she knew how to hunt but animals are not exactly always available in the deserted city so she takes her time to scavenge from place to place. Aria did have a couple of MRE inside her bag, but as much as possible, she likes to look around. It keeps her entertain and roaming around means there are more chances of finding a safe house. So far, she has two. It was a well hidden room with some supplies enough to last her a week. She likes to think that  when things get more tough in the outside world, there is a cubby hole where she can crawl inside and just wait for her inevitable doom.

Aria checked the label of the chewing gum under the counter before she pocketed them. What she managed to obtain in her 'hunt' was three granola bars by the shelf, five cans of mountain dew that was at the bottom of the stinky fridge, A couple of chips and the chewing gum.. It wasn't such a bad haul. Looking outside, a sense of laziness filled her. Aria pulled the door shut, since the lock was blasted off, she just pulled the rack near the entrance as quietly as she can, though granted it created some ruckus as the heavy metal scrape off the floor. She paused for a while, listening if she stirred something up. Hearing nothing except her beating heart, she continued to pull and block the door. There was an exit out back and there were windows upstairs if something tried to get in anyway.

She looked for some boxes out back and with her Chinese ring knife, she slice them and made a makeshift bed which she drag in the corner. She put her bag down and fished out a book that she read for a hundredth time before settling down herself and just wait for the night fall to consume the place.

Once inside, Natalia crouched underneath the broken window, her back pressed against the (surprisingly) sturdy wall. The warm red of her flannel shirt kept the chill in the air from nipping at her skin, and the attached gray hood kept some of her hair out of her way. Her eyes, shielded by the thick plastic of the goggles, moved slowly over the room, making sure that the shadows remained where they were. Perhaps she was a little on the cautious, but there really was no such thing as "too" cautious during the end of the world. When any corner or strange nook could mean certain death.

No, there was no such thing as too cautious.

And,  only when she was satisfied that everything in the store was as still as it should be, did she begin to make her way, slowly and steadily, deeper into the building. It was easier now than it had been at first to keep her heart rate down. It was incredibly helpful in keeping an ear out for any danger, seeing as outside noises didn't get drowned out by the sound of her blood rushing through her ears. The ripped, dirty jeans she'd been wearing pretty much since this started had long ago loosened up enough to allow her to half-crawl across the floor, never moving from her crouched position as she made her way down the aisles.

Most of the shelves appeared to be picked clean. With gloved fingers, she moved debris with her free hand, searching for anything at all that she could eat. It wasn't that she was completely out-- there were still some granola bars and a couple of cans in the backpack strapped tightly around her chest-- but she knew that she could really use some more food.

It took some time to make her way around the whole store, and all it turned up was a bottle of ibuprofen that was wedged tight under the edge of one of the shelves, and a small pack of crackers that she'd found hidden under a pile of old newspapers. The medicine was great, but food-wise, it was a pretty disappointing haul. She would have to see if she could find another store and pick that place apart, too.

As she was making her slow way back to the window-- the front door was blocked off with a rack that had probably once held candy bars, and she wasn't fond of using front doors anymore, anyway-- she noticed a door behind the counter that probably led to the back room. Pausing, Natalia bit her lip. It would be easy for something to be hiding back there; she'd made that mistake before. But it would be just as easy for food to be hiding back there as it would be for one of those things. She didn't want to miss any supplies, but she also really didn't want to stir up a fuss by having to fight off one of those things.

After weighing her options for a few moments, she decided that her best bet was to head back outside and see if there was any other way in. If not, then she resolved to come back inside and use the door, but to be exceedingly careful about it. Exiting out of the window was, surprisingly, even easier than coming in through it had been, and moments later, she was back outside. It had started to rain while she was inside; she'd heard it, but rain wasn't exactly high up on her list of things to worry about.

She stepped quickly and quietly along the pavement, dotted with fat drops of rain, until she'd made her way around back. It appeared that luck was on her side this time. There was a window, and it was already broken out. It was pretty high up, but if she got up onto the dumpster, she could reach. So that was exactly what she did. Sliding the hatchet back into the makeshift holster on her right thigh, she heaved herself up onto the dumpster as quietly as she could. Actually reaching the window took a little bit of a jump, but she was able to grab onto the edge and haul herself up.

It was a small window, meaning that she had to squeeze, and when she dropped down, her landing was definitely louder than she was comfortable with. Her eyes immediately found the shadows in the corner, moving, and her hand flew back to her hatchet. Thin, deft fingers pulled it quickly from its holster, and it was only once they were tightening around the handle that she realized there was no way this shadow could be one of those creatures.

This shadow had a book.

Though she was still holding the hatchet-- she didn't trust the people who weren't sick, either, really-- she lifted her hands into the air, on either side of her head, to show that she meant no harm. "I come in peace?"

"The whole series of my life appeared to me as a dream; I sometimes doubted if indeed it were all true, for it never presented itself to my mind with the force of reality."

Aria read in a whisper, from all the sentences in  the book that she was reading, it was one of the quotes that she could actually relate to, especially in her circumstances as of the moment. Her previous life was no more than a dream to her now, the only traces of the world she grew up with was in rubbles and ruins. If not in dreams every time she falls asleep, the world before was entirely gone and faded to what was passed as the world now. She sometimes did wonder if it actually ever existed, the world were there was peace and order, for now it seems like she was ready to kill and maim anyone who's in her way. No remorse, no hesitation. She easily adapted to the crazy environment.

She knew her mother would argue with her interpretation of the passage. Aria's mom would say that maybe it was a metaphor or some shit. Heck, her mom would even throw a fit if she was here to see the state of the book her daughter was holding. She'd passed out then would definitely throw a fit.  In Aria's defense, she found the book that way, the cover is all torn up, pages were now yellowish and some were even folded.  People don't care about books anymore, the only use of it for them was to be use as an additional source of heat.

Aria chuckled while thinking of what would her mom would say if she saw her burn the book. Her mom would probably not say anything at first but she'll definitely smack Aria and then give her a one hour lecture about how important the book was or maybe more once she recovered. Pain filled her heart but she pushed all her emotions deep with in her. God knows that she is more than willing to listen to all her berating, even if it was a lecture of a boring history of something.  Aria will give anything just to see her alive and well. But it is way past that. And now she's pretty certain that God doesn't exist or else they wouldn't be in this mess. If God did exist, then He's cruel and horrible.

She's not exactly a believer, she goes with the facts and what is in front of her. If she just put it on faith, surviving would be hard.  Besides, she needed a clear head. She can't get compromise by her emotions.

Emotions are just as dangerous as the infected people. Emotions can make you hesitate, and hesitation kills. Especially if you're in front of an infected. No, she needed to be as sharp as her knife. In time she learned how to be tough and cold but sometimes it's not enough. She is still human, she could still feel pain and longing, and sometimes these unwanted emotions had its way of creeping back inside her heart.

A tear fell on her cheek as she hugged the half torn book. Aria wanted to sob and just curl up and die. Let the rotting world consume her. If she's going in hell (if it really actually exist), she's fine with it. She believes that it is not that worse than what she was dealing with right now. But then that wasn't how she was raised. She grew up to be a resilient girl. The type of person who never gives up and doesn't take a crap about what others think. Aria was hardwired to be a resourceful and quick on her feet, thanks to her dad.

Besides, it's not over yet. Humanity is still fighting. She knew her dad and two brothers are alive, she could feel it. If she made it this long, then they definitely made it too. It was one of the few things that kept her going everyday. The thought of seeing her father and brothers again, alive and kicking, is enough to make her pick up her bag and head for her next destination.

The flurry of rain  suddenly pattered outside. It hits the cement with a rhythm at first but then it poured down hard and harsh, completely covering the noise of the outside world. If not the infected, the unpredictable weather is one of the things that could kill all the remaining survivors. Drought, rain, hail, blizzard, no one can tell what was going next.

Aria went back on her reading again, her back was on the wall behind her while her elbows were on her the knees that were up. With the rain pouring hard outside, Aria didn't bother on checking the windows and doors from time to time. The sound was echoing all through out the place, if there were infected somewhere, they'll probably be confused. She was getting complacent for Aria checked the whole shop before resting her butt that's why when something suddenly emerged from the back part of the room, Aria managed to picked up the gun beside her slower than she liked.

"I come in peace?"

The figure suddenly said. Aria picked up the gun and jumped on her feet, the gun was trailed upon the new comer. Base on her voice, it was a girl. The place wasn't entirely dark and Aria managed to see and size up the new comer. "Who are you? What do you want?" She asked quietly, her voice was calm, her hands was holding the gun still while her finger was pressed lightly on the trigger.  The girl was slim and when push comes to shove, Aria was a little confident that she could take her on, with or without weapons. "This store is already cleaned out." said Aria, "A little bummer really, they didn't have Reese's." she added as she tried to lighten the mood. Though with a weapon trailed on the other girl, she doesn't know if her tone was helping. She wanted to put the gun down but she needed to be certain. Aria was still on a hunt for her beloved family, and not to mention her peanut butter cups. She doesn't want to bit the dust because she became stupid and lower her guard down. "Are you alone?"

Immediately, Natalia's eyes went to the gun pointed directly at her face. While she was sure the scenery was great, one didn't exactly ignore the threat staring one in the eyes. Shit. She should have checked more thoroughly before entering the room. Little mistakes like this were going to be the death of her, no doubt about it. This strange new world wasn't exactly forgiving, especially not of huge mistakes like that.

Still, the other girl hadn't shot her yet. It was something. Nowadays, a lot of people were the type to shoot first and ask questions later. Though she supposed that it might have helped that she was the one to speak up first. It indicated that she wasn't infected (at least, she wasn't infected enough to have lost her wits) and that she didn't mean any harm. If she had, she'd have just attacked the girl outright. Not announced her presence and held her weapon up in the air. As if a hatchet was any match for a gun, anyway.

Her own gun was tucked safely in the back of her waistband, the safety on. It was only to be used for emergencies, seeing as guns were fucking loud and she didn't want to draw unnecessary attention to herself.

"My name's Natalia. I was just looking for some food." When she spoke, her voice was just as quiet and calm as the other girl's. There was no need for her tone to upset her. This was a precarious situation as it was. It would be the little things that would tip the scales out of her favor. This girl, whoever she was, didn't seem like she wanted to shoot her yet. Maybe it would be possible for her to just... walk out of this. Explain the situation and get out. Disaster averted.

Hope was pretty hard to come by nowadays, and the small flicker of it that she felt at the possibility of getting out of this situation wouldn't do her any good in the long run. So she turned it off .

Focus. She needed to focus. Answer the questions, so she could get out of this situation as soon as possible. "Look, it's just me, and since the store's all empty, I'll just-- leave, alright?" She hadn't missed the comment about the Reese's, but she wasn't sure if she should respond to it, or just focus on getting the fuck out of here before she got a bullet between the eyes.

"I-- uh, I don't have any Reese's to offer as a bribe, but if you'd let me go, that would be pretty cool." She tried for a smile, but she wasn't sure if it was even visible in the dim lighting.

It has been almost a month since she last saw a decent human being. Well, the definition of decent is a little stretched since the last human she saw was eating a raw rat. He shooed her away when she accidentally step on his 'imaginary boundary'. Since the guy practically screamed like an old man yelling at a girl who trespassed his lawn. It was Aria's fault anyways, she wanted to have a closer look to hack the guy if he was an infected. One less infected roaming around is one less problem.

She looked around, her eyes wandered at the entrance where the new girl, Natalia, emerged. Aria tried to listen carefully if there were any other footsteps or shuffling that was hiding in the shadows but the damn rain made it impossible. Her gut says that it was okay to relax, if the girl is not alone, then her comrades would probably jumped out of hiding seeing that Aria was alone.

"Damn, I was hoping for a peanut butter cup." Aria smirked. She lowered her gun but didn't put the safety back on. Her gut says chill but her brain says don't be stupid. "It's pouring out there. You can stay but stay on that side." She suggested, "I'm a little pissed off since they don't have Reese's, I don't mind shooting someone to let off some steam." Aria warned but she added a little smile across her face.

She raised her hand with a gun and place it beside her head. Kneeling down slowly, she reached out to her bag on the ground and grab one of the granola bars she found earlier. "Here, heads up." She tossed the packet in her direction. "The name's Aria, by the way." Aria sat down on her box again but her head was still facing the direction where Natalia was.  "So, if you don't mind me asking. Where did you come from?"

In the dim light, Natalia could see the other girl looking around in the dim light. If it wasn't for the other girl turning her head, though, she doubted that she would have noticed. After all, it was difficult to see more than silhouettes with the lighting as bad as it was. Still, it gave her enough information to figure that the girl was probably looking around to see if she was telling the truth. With the rain, it was easy to mask the sounds of footsteps, so all she would have to go on would be the shifting of shadows, if there were any. It wasn't like she much blamed her, so she remained still in an attempt to appear as nonthreatening as possible.

When the gun lowered, however, she couldn't help feeling that a heavy weight had been moved from her chest. It was like she could finally breathe properly again. Maybe the whole world had gone to shit and everything, but it wasn't as if she wanted to die. The fear of this world was certain. The fear of the next... not so much.

Still, it surprised her when she was told to stay. This girl was going to allow a stranger into her safe space? Well, she supposed there were still some good people here. Maybe she'd happened across one. And maybe it wouldn't hurt for her to stay here until the rain stopped.

So she nodded and, keeping her one hand visible, slowly lowered the hatchet to its holster on her thigh. "Yeah, alright. I'll stay over here." she agreed as she secured it back into its spot. "And try to make sure I don't push you into letting off some steam." The smile was genuine this time, although it was small. She was still a little nervous, after all. If the girl thought she moved wrong, it could mean a bullet to the head.

The granola bar caught her a bit off-guard, and she just barely caught it. Huh, food and shelter. She guessed this girl probably wasn't so bad. "Thanks, Aria." Before opening the wrapper, she slipped her backpack from her shoulders and placed it against the wall. For now, she leaned against it, but when she went to sleep, she'd use it as a pillow. "Do you mean right now, or before all this started?" she asked around a mouthful of granola. Manners didn't take much precedence in this new world. Besides, she was pretty damn hungry, and she didn't think Aria would hold it against her too much for talking with her mouth full.

Aria fiddled the edge of the page of her book. The sound of the pages being turned were crisp and loud but was covered by the heavy rain from above. Thunder echoed from the sky and lightning streak along with it, lighting the dark clouds that was closing the town like coffin lid.  "There's no point of talking about where we live before all of this craziness, is there?" she chuckled but a tinge of bitterness in her voice was almost tangible. "All was left was stones and nightmare of what we call home before, so I say don't dwell on the bad things. It's a bad ice breaker."

There she was, rambling again. Apart from her manic behavior when nervous, anxious, or frustrated,  sometimes Aria talks quite a lot. Mumbling and ranting under her breath, she may look a little weird, especially when the world was still normal and she was still in school, but talking helps her to concentrate and calm down. And being calm can save your life, mostly these days. And it was quite some time when she last talked to a human being. Aria usually talks to the infected but it was more of a one sided conversation. It wasn't exactly a conversation to begin with, it was more or less Aria cussing at them while she hack and smack their heads in.

Ironically enough, talking to yourself will keep you sane.

Aria stifled a laugh when she heard the new girl spoke, her voice was muffled by the granola bar that she gave. "Naw, " Aria said, putting the book that she was holding back inside her bag.  "Before you stumbled into this useless store. I need to put it on my map." From her bag, she produce a sheet and unfolded the map. Aria risked on lightning her flash light on. "Is the place just like an entire barren wasteland? I need to know so that I don't need to visit it."

Over the rain slamming into the tin of the roof, Natalia didn't hear the sounds of the pages, and since her head was turned towards the window, she didn't see it out, either. While she despised actually being out in storms-- it would soak through her clothes, then leave her frozen and chafed for days; it was just a really uncomfortable situation to find oneself in-- it was rather nice to sit here and be able to watch it. She used to love storms. The rolling of the thunder and the arching of the lightning strikes... there was just something oddly soothing about it.

"Bad ice breaker, I suppose. But it sometimes eases my mind to daydream about before." After all, before was basically a dream. Maybe it wasn't a fairytale, "everything is perfect" kind of dream, but in it, she still had a home, a mother, and a future to look forward to. Now, she was fighting for a future that would only give her more suffering-- starving, fighting, dehydration, tons of other discomforts. But yet, she was still fighting. It didn't make any damn sense. Then again, she supposed that none of this really made sense. People were spewing their guts-- literally,-- then getting up and trying to attack other people. Yup, none of it made a damn lick of sense.

At least manners could be overlooked. Natalia swallowed the mouthful of granola bar and shook her head. "Last place I was at ran out of supplies. Suppose that was about 45 or so miles northwest. Then I got chased off some farmland by a crazy old dude about 30 miles west of here, though. You should probably put that on your map, too. All the crops I could see were dead, anyway." She'd really been hoping to find some fresh vegetables or fruit growing wild out there, but there had been no such luck. Actually, she had a sneaking suspicion that he'd ruined the ones she'd come across. So he could see any infected before they got too close. Or any noninfected trespassers. Crazy, but not dumb.

"Other than that, I've just sort of been wandering around. Couldn't tell you where all I've been." she added between bites of granola. The wrapper crinkled when she balled it up to toss it into an open box across the way, but she missed the box-- barely. "Damn."

"Daydream." Aria muttered quietly as she tried to straighten the map in front of her. It was a map of the city that she procure in a shop of a gasoline station nearby. And it was actually one of the maps that are folded in her bag. "It's actually alright to daydream once in a while, can't blame you. With us living in this nightmare," she added bitterly. Suddenly, a smile escape her lips, if this continues, i'll be a bitter old lady.  Aria thought, glad for the cloak of darkness that hides her slight craziness.

"Northwest..  northwest..." Aria mumbled as she traced with her light the dotted line in her map, once she found the right spot, she gingerly mark it with an 'X'.

"Gods. Don't go that direction then." Aria mumbled, drawing another mark on the map where the farm is located.

"Well, can't go back north. Guess, south it is." She announced as she inspect the remaining locations in the map. Not seeing much, she turned off her light and folded the map before putting it inside her bag.

"Okay then, I guess, i'll hit the sack." Aria said. "We're stuck here. Hopefully the rain will stop in the morning." She added with a sigh while looking at the window. It was just afternoon, the sun was still peering an hour ago but the sky was too dark, causing a false night time. There was no use of travelling in that weather and even if the rain stops that same night, she'd be an idiot for stepping outside.

"Just so you know, i'm a light sleeper and a really good shot." Aria informed nicely, but the threat was as clear as the daylight.

She positioned herself on the edge of the room, lying on a pile of flattened box. Her bag was above her head while her Beretta was safely tucked under her jacket, a place where she can pull it out and fire easily. Same goes for her knife. "Good night, mate."  Aria called out, folding herself into a fetal position.

As soon as she closed her eyes, Aria fell asleep after a few minutes. It was one of her amazing talents. If she was tired, it would only take less than five minutes before she can catch z's. Even when the world was still alive and normal, Aria can sleep in a moving car just as she can sleep in a soft bed. She can sleep for an entire day if she could. But then the new world came to be, and it was like her body is adapting to the unwanted but needed changes. Her ears became sensitive to every sound, from the blowing of the wind outside to the drops of rainwater on the floor in a broken roof in the other room. But that didn't stop her from sleeping and dreaming.

Dreaming. Her only escape in her endless nightmare of waking hours. It took some hours before dreams found her.  As always, her dream always started the same. She was in a meadow. A wide beautiful meadow, like the ones they happen to cross when she was with her dad travelling, with miles and miles of green grasses and beautiful wild flowers. She was sitting in the middle of it, the grass was tickling her bare legs for she was only wearing her favorite denim shorts and a tank top. The sky was a cloudless blue, the sun was up but the heat is not intense. Butterflies flutter from flower to flower. Her brunette hair is being blown by the wind in every other direction.

It was perfect and calm. Before she noticed a movement from a far. A shadow. Aria ignored it, and chose to look up and just adore the vast expanse. Seconds passed, the shadow moved only to became a full pledge figure. It was a figure of a person coming towards her. The man was not alone. There was another one beside it, then another and another.

They were walking, no... lumbering. They were lumbering towards her and Aria, driven by instincts reach for her gun in the holster that suddenly appeared on her side. She pointed the gun at the figure and and pulled the trigger. She fired, shot after shot. Her mind told her to stop for maybe it was just some random men but then something inside her that told her that it wasn't safe.

Shots were fired but the gun didn't move. It didn't even have any recoil of whatsoever. Confused, she held the thing closer for inspection. Weird enough, the banging sound became clearer. "What the h—..."

Aria jolted up, the banging wasn't from her dream, it was real. Someone or something was pounding her makeshift door, she then heard groaning next. "Fuck."  Aria cussed as she grab her bag and slung it behind her. Her eyes never leaving the door. It was dawn. The dark sky was already lighting up, hiding the twinkling stars back in the night sky.

"Hey.." Aria called out to her guest, the pounding on the door was not stopping. There were five creatures outside, five infected people who is trying to ram their way in. "Hey.Wake up, we need to go. Unless you wanted to be their breakfast." Aria was holding out her gun and knife, her eyes, filled with horror and anticipation as she stared st the hands that are clawing the shelves that she use to bar the door. "Hey..." Aria wanted to run but she can't handle the idea of abandoning the girl alone.

"South is warmer, at least." Natalia stared at the slowly-unfurling granola wrapper that was now lying on the ground. If it had been Before, she probably would have gotten up and actually properly disposed of it. Letting trash lie around wasn't exactly acceptable. So she didn't see much point in worrying about it. Just twisted around and attempted to fluff up her backpack into a nice pillow.

It had been a while since she'd gotten sleep. She hadn't bothered to keep up with the days, but she'd been constantly moving for a few of them. Her body ached and her eyes were tired, always trying to drift closed. They burned, of course, when they did. Even sitting still for this long, it appeared that her body was unwilling to stand and move again, so she was glad that Aria had offered for her to remain here for the night. It would give her time to rest, without having to worry about being attacked in her sleep.

"Don't worry. Killing an unsuspecting target isn't enough of a challenge for me." Which wasn't true. If an infected hadn't noticed her, you could bet your ass that she's take it out as quickly and quietly as possible. But a human who hadn't lost their shit? Who still had at least a bit of humanity left? She was willing to leave her be, and just focus on getting some rest before she had to move again. If the rain didn't let up, she supposed that would be fine. There were worse things than being soaked to the bone with rain water.

Sometimes, even, it was nice.

"G'night." she muttered, as she dropped her head against the makeshift pillow.

As tired as she was, it was surprising how long it took her to fall asleep. For what felt like hours, she simply lied there, her eyes locked on the grimy, broken window. For the most part, it was dark, but occasionally, it would light up as electricity crackled through the sky. It was almost as if she could see faces in the grime, and eventually, she squeezed her eyes shut against the ghosts from her past.

If she dreamed, Natalia couldn't recall what it was about. Perhaps it was due to how tired she was, or perhaps there was just nothing else to dream about. She wasn't entirely sure how dreaming worked, after all, though she had quite a few ideas about the concept.

The next thing she knew, there was a voice. She didn't exactly recognize it, but there was another sound that was much more familiar. A loud, rustling, banging noise. And then-- the groans. Those sent her heart pounding in her chest. Without actual input from her brain, she was shoving herself to her feet, catching one of the straps of her bag between the webbing of her thumb and forefinger. "This way. The window." Even though this girl could just as easily kill her as the creatures at the door, with her gun at the ready and the sharp knife held firmly in her hand, Natalia reached out and grabbed her around the wrist, tugging her towards her side of the room and shoving her towards the window.

Even if they were met with more infected outside, it had to be better than running headfirst into a door packed to the brim with them.

She slung her bag over both shoulders and secured the buckle tightly around her chest, and the moment it clicked into place, her hand flew down to grab the hatchet against her right thigh. She steadied it in front of her, facing the door. As much as she hated doing it, she watched the scrabbling fingers peeking through the crack, the weight of five people pushing the shelves further into the room, inch by inch. They had to hurry. If they didn't, they'd be cornered against the wall.

Aria was quite surprise when Natalia suddenly jumped into action. Alert after just woken up. Aria felt that if it was her, she might have skewer the person who woke her up before thanking them for waking her up and saving her to her inevitable death. Good god, she thought. She really isn't that fond of having a companion. Or perhaps she was now use being alone and not relying on someone to save her ass from being killed or worse, turn into someone who can't think and has no remorse.  She eyed the girl's hand as she grab her wrist, Aria could easily tug it back but the rambling and groaning at the door was getting louder and louder. IF the infected manage to push through the door, it is going to be definitely bad for them.

"Gods," Aria groaned, she had a nice time inside. The place wasn't that perfect but the store gave her a shelter against the storm last night. Fuck, now I am getting sentimental. She thought as a smirk formed in her face. "I hated this place anyways." Aria mumbled as she lied to herself out loud. She looked at the girl briefly before putting her dagger on her strap and the gun on her holster where she can easily grab them when needed. Aria looked outside, checking the surroundings. It is a stupid move if they went outside only to be greeted by their lot. Seeing only a few that they could definitely outrun,  Aria pushed the glass window. The infected wasn't a challenge enough that the window decided to be uncooperative. It got stuck half way. "Fuck. It's stuck!" Aria groaned as she pushed the window, planting her foot on the sill to get the force on her side. With one final, and a hard push, the window finally opened. Aria easily hoist herself up and out she went, ducking in the process in case one of the infected are nearby. "Come on!"  Aria said, she pulled out her knife and reach out a hand. The ruckus inside was drawing infected in their spot. "Hurry up."

Natalia was fighting the urge to bounce on her feet as she stood facing the door, the hatchet held firmly in front of her. Adrenaline was racing through her body, making it difficult to remain still as she waited for her turn out the window. The sounds of the metal shelf scraping against the floor and the window screeching as Aria attempted to shove it open assaulted her eardrums, and she was surprised it wasn't drowned out by the sounds of her heart pounding. But then, there was an even worse screech as the window reached a point it refused to easily pass, and her heart basically stopped. "Fuck, break it or something!" Panic pitched her voice a little bit, and she quickly closed her mouth again to grit her teeth together.

Perfect timing. Stupid window. It was such a fucking traitor. Showing her faces from the past last night, and now refusing to allow them to get out.

Finally, though, she heard the final squawk as the window finally flew open the rest of the way. "Thank god." she muttered under her breath, glancing back as Aria shoved herself out of the opening. Her attention was quickly drawn back again as there was a loud scrape, followed by a series of clattering and crashing and groaning. The infected had finally managed to push the door open, sending the metal shelf careening to the floor. One of the legs didn't allow the door to open quite all the way, but it was enough that they began ambling into the little room.

Her blue eyes flew open wide. "Shit." This room was great for many things, but those things could also be weaknesses. There wasn't a lot of debris, which meant no obstacles to earn her a little extra time. And it was pretty small space, which meant they could get to her quickly. "I'm hurrying!" she called as she spun around.

The hatchet banged against the metal of the window sill as she threw herself at it. It made it a little more difficult to grip the edge, but her free hand made up for it. She was almost halfway out of the window when she felt a slimy hand grab at the waist of her pants and, with a strength that a decomposed piece of shit really should not have, yank her back down. A shriek ripped its way from her throat, the hatchet clattering against the dumpster on the outside and falling into the dirt, as she slipped backwards, her boot toes screaming against the metal of the wall.

Thankfully, her mind was pretty quick in assessing the situation. Natalia had barely had time to hit the floor when it registered that her weapon was gone, and her hand shot to the hatchet strapped to her left thigh.

There were infected around her, their groans loud and angry, their hands grabbing at her hair and her clothes, and she just wasn't fast enough--

One of them had gotten a hold of her hood, pulling at her jacket and exposing the pale slope of her shoulder and--

It didn't even really register in her brain to scream. Perhaps her brain didn't even notice the severing of the nerves when teeth ripped into that bare bit of skin. Her hand barely faltered in its descent to the hatchet. Her gloved fingers closed around the rubber-coated handle, and with a jerk, she pulled it free and buried it into the middle of the bastard's skull. Her eyes and mouth were closed, shielding them from the spatter of blood.

There was no way she was being eaten alive.

Natalia threw the now-limp body back into the rest of the horde and vaulted back to the window. Her boots sent up dirt as she finally managed to shove herself out of the building. The jacket had snapped almost completely back into place once it was released, covering the wound, and it was barely in her mind right now anyway. All that was in her head now was not getting eaten alive. She scooped up the dropped hatchet as she crouched underneath the window, glancing around.

"Let's go. Gotta get out of here." she muttered, mostly to herself, (was Aria even still around? her brain hadn't registered that, either) before racing from behind the dumpster and zig-zagging towards the woods.

The noise inside the room were attracting the few infected near by that Aria ran head on and stab the decomposing bastard in the head. Her knife landed with a sickening crunch before she pulled out and the thing landed with a thud. There were three others and with a cuss, she holster her gun (it'd be too stupid if she use it) and with a quick move, she managed to eliminate the threat one by one. Chunks of meat were coming off from the infected when she pulled out her dagger. "Disgusting son of a bitch." She said quietly, her face was in a scowl as she crouched on the ground and wipe the blood off her blade to the shirt of the recently fallen infected. She looked back and Natalia was still inside.

Sweat beaded on her nape as she watch Natalia struggled to come up. Her heart was beating faster, or probably it just skipped a beat, as she stood outside and waited for her while. Before, waiting on someone was never a problem. She could easily ditch a place without thinking, she could easily run and hide without thinking of someone else that is at risk. But now, staring at the open window, she was having a second thoughts. I could always run. Like always.  A nasty idea came up in her slightly deranged brain. She could easily pushed the other girl down, she's having a hard time climbing up anyways, or just run ahead and leave her there. With her inside, she could buy a lot of time escaping. Natalia was definitely skinny but the infected usually takes their time in consuming their victim. Shut it! Aria said, almost hissed inside her head. She can't just abandon the girl. She can't just abandon anyone who's not infected. Period. Stupid conscience. The devil inside her chided the angel or what could pass for it.

"Natalia!" Aria suddenly exclaimed when she fell. She wanted to jumped back down but there were too many infected. She could take on five but she has to do it one by one. And with that cramp of a space, it's pretty dangerous and risky. She wanted to help out but others are being attracted to the sound of groans and metals crashing down. "Fuck. Fuck!" She hissed quietly. If Natalia managed to get out somehow, it is going to be useless if they are cornered by the horde outside. Fishing out the other knife, she looked back at the window before sauntering towards the nearest infected and bury her knife on its face and used her other knife to stab its already mushy head. Blood spattered on her cheek as she killed the last one before Natalia managed to come out of the window staggering.

Aria didn't answer back but she followed Natalia to the woods (after stomping the head of the still moving but fallen infected with her boot.) The two ran, taking cover and assurance that they were being hidden by bushes and fallen timber. They met a couple of lost infected who was just standing idly by, they only moved and groan when they heard them coming. Sure, they were slow but they are dangerous in a horde. Aria wanted to kill every single thing they passed by but out running them was easier that time.

"Ha--hang on." Aria stopped on her tracks. it was more than half an hour of none stop running and her sides were killing her. "Let's stop for a moment." Aria looked around and thank the high heavens, there are no infected around. They were in the middle of the forest, it was quiet and eerie. No birds singing overhead nor crickets chirping near by. There was a tiny brook that was flowing near them and the water rushing was the only sound that she can hear apart from her heavy breathing and her heart beat. "I think we're good for now." Aria said. It was a stupid thing to say since the whole world is currently overrun by some weird ass infected but considering their situation, it was a perfect sentence. She sat down on the ground and leant by the mossy fallen tree. "My feet is killing me." she added with a groan as she took out her bottled water and took a sip. The water felt good as it ran down her throat. She safely put it back inside and took out her map. "Here we are," she said, pointing their location on the map. "If we managed to cross this forest safely, there's another town nearby." Aria trailed down a line in her map while silently thanking her dad for teaching her map reading. "It's a five to sixhour trek depending on our speed. Maybe we could even find a place where we could crash. I don't like the woods at night. There's not enough cover." She looked at her with a grim expression and pursed lips, "That's my plan anyways. It's your choice if you want to go to other directions."
