Grim followed along, noting the many wretched souls who called this squalor home. More then one looked like they wanted or envied the group as they walked past. It was probably an odd sight to armed individuals walking freely through the slums. Beyond that of the guards anyways.

James explanation was useful, and the otter in human guise listened and made notes for later if they proved useful. He also noted the turns they made, making buildings and other landmarks, in case they needed to make a run for it.

The would be assailant was not lost on him, but was beneath his care, since he was easily dispatched by the appointed leader of the group.

Once they reached the, by comparison, opulent gate, Grim nodded in appreciation of the work. "Not bad, much a better then that pish district." He grinned and bit back a chuckle as James was unceremoniously knocked onto his back. Leaning over James while Why'nn paid the guards, Grim smiled and held a hand out to help him up. "That was planned, wasn't it?"

The guard Why'nn spoke to glared down at her, tempted to slap Why'nn across the face for threatening him.  But, she was willing to pay, and he was well aware that people who made threats so plainly usually had the means to carry them out.

"Five swords.  Each."

If Why'nn inspected the money they'd been given, she'd notice that the gold coins were stamped with crowns, the silver with swords, and the copper with goblets or "cups".

James did chuckle as Grim helped him up.

"Would you believe me if I told you yes?  Bribery is a long standing tradition among the Tolnedrian military.  Sort of like tipping the barkeep at a tavern.  And we did come in from the Lower Quarter.  Tolnedra has a strong economy, but it's definitely not advisable to live in any of the major cities if you can't afford it, if you catch my meaning."

James didn't say this particularly quietly, but when they heard him say this the guards just sort of laughed and/or shrugged.

Why'nn was mildly surprised. That seemed low. But who was she to argue for a higher price? Swiftly, she drew out twenty silver coins and handed them to the guard in question. In Thay it'd be at least twenty gold for a group of four outlanders dressed as they were to get through a tax station, and even then only if the guards were feeling generous. Interesting. These Tolnedrians were foolish, indeed. Either way, she gave a silent thanks to her god and also Waukeen. It seemed the gods were, thus far, blessing their journey.

The slight girl glanced back at her fellows. "Come. There is no use for any further wait." Carrying herself as only a true Thayan noblewoman cleric would, with a sense of importance and purpose that made the guards stand away from her in some modicum of respect, confusion, fear, or awe, she moved through the gate, slipping her coin pouch into a pocket on the inside of her tunic.

Reagan had largely ignored anyone trying to mug them, looking around and feeling very bored. 'New world, new sights, incredibly boring.' As the neared the gates to the Merchant's Quarter, Reagan looked at the castle. 'OK, maybe a little interesting.' James being shoved around got her attention, needing to make sure they could get out of there safely was slightly more important than catharsis by proxy. She readied herself for a fight, just in case. 'Wow. Different world, still an Orzhov. Wonder where the equivalent Izzet is? I'll figure it out later.'

Once Why'nn paid up and they got moving, she didn't exactly wait around to see if anyone changed their minds. Reagan mumbled something about the strange lovechild of the Boros and Orzhov. Greedy and militarized. "Well that was fun. Does everyone hate you here, or is this just a special case?" As funny as it would be if the entire world hated James, he had the group's escape route.

Grim smiled and shook his head. "Oh yeah, well played." 'Did not have to worry about this sort of thing in Mossflower. Oh such a simple life.' He motioned after Why'nn. "The lady has a point." Falling into step next to James, he winked at Reagan. "Move along... move along." Making a waving motion with his hand, using a semi-monotone voice.

He adjusted the longbow on his shoulder and kept pace with the group, checking behind them every few paces, knowing he was being very overt about it, but he was hoping to ward off any would be assailants that way.

James shook his head as he followed the others into the Merchant's Quarter, reaching into his pocket to find that list of things they'd need to pick up.

The Merchant's Quarter was like a completely different city altogether.  The streets were wide and crowded, with stalls, shops, and inns seemingly everywhere.  The people here had a busy, rushed look about them as they sold items for increasingly high prices in an attempt to make money that they'd only use to buy more items to sell.  While there was nothing one might consider a "casino", gambling dens were just about everywhere.  The only thing that this part of the city seemed to have in common with the Lower Quarter was the number of prostitutes, though in this section of the city they wore generally classierr attire.  It didnt' take a genius to see the true purpose of this pat of the city was to squeeze locals and visitors alike for every coin they had.

"Alright"  James said, pulling out the list.  "We should get as big of a head start as we can, so I'll go get the supplies.  The cart might take some time to deliver, so while I do that, you guys try to find us an inn to spend the night."

James pulled a flip notebook from his bag.

"Here's a copy of one of my notebooks.  Anything you write should appear on its twin.  Once you find us an inn, just write down the name of it so that I can meet up with you later."

James held out the notebook awkwardly for a moment before he shrugged, placed it on top of Grim's head, then turned and began walking to where the farmers were selling their wares.

Reagan looked over at Grim, confused as to what exactly he was doing. "I'm moving. See? Legs. Moving. One in front of the other. Producing forward motion. Thanks to forces acting on me from the ground."  She looked away from Grim and looked around at the Merchant's Quarter. She had seen similar streets in Ravnica, sure. Just not ones so... small. Or prices with so many zeros tacked on. The only thing missing were the Rakdos clubs and the occasional Orzhov shakedown. Maybe the Boros or Azorious interrupting. She did scan the storefronts to try and find chemicals, only to have her vision blocked by various customers clamoring for products. 'Crap. Thought I saw the chemicals for some sodium nitrate.' As James rather awkwardly placed the notebook on Grim's head, Reagan swiped it. She had one opportunity to mess with James, she was using it. She waited until James was out of sight and started snickering, scribbling something down in the notebook. She took a deep breath to recover, and then started to look around. "So... are we going to find an inn or what?"

Grim smiled at Reagan as she literally explained what she was doing.

But when James balanced the notebook on his head the polymorphed otter shrugged and let it sit there. "Ok boss, will do." Giving James a two fingered salute by tapping them to his brow. Grinning, with the notebook a still on his head he turned to the group, rubbing his hands (creepy things) together. "There's gotta be a tavern round here!"

When Reagan snatched the notebook of his head he frowned a bit. "That was my new hat...." Not missing the mischievous look on his fellow witcher-in-training's face.

Though the street was crowded, there were three inn's that could be seen from where they were that didn't look too seedy.

The first was a tavern called Salmissra's Kiss.  The tavern was adorned with the carving of a massive snake coiling around the door, and most of the clientel had shaved heads and wore bright, almost gaudy colors.  In fact, just about everyone but the bald, gaudily dressed people seemed to avoid the place.  Still, from what could be seen, the inside was clean, people chatted amicably, and the smell that wafted from within indicated that the food they served was wonderful.

The second was called the Hog's Trough.  The place appeared dirty, and the smell was ever worse.  The reason for the name was made apparent by the dozen or so pigs that wandered around the inside of the tavern, and the mess they left behind as the scavenged from tables, and left not so little "gifts" on the floor.  Despite this, and the fact that the beer tasted like "A drunkard had pissed in a keg of stagnant water" according to one very drunk, very loud patron, the tavern was still packed, likely because of how cheap everything inside was.

Finally there was the Sleeping Lion, a place that's very air screamed expense.  Most of the people coming in and out of it were extremely wealthy, based on their looks, their gaits, and that way of arrogantly looking down their nose at people that the rich and powerful seemed to share no matter what world one was in.  The food being served inside appeared to be of high quality though, and the staff didn't appear to be actively discouraging people from entering, so really there was nothing stopping the group from choosing this place.

Ultimately, it was all a matter of perrsonal taste.

Upon seeing Salmissra's Kiss Why'nn was drawn toward it.  However, she had to remind herself that this was not Faerun, these were not her people.  Just as quickly as the excitement of the styles and smells drew her, disappointment and sadness fell over her and she sighed, turning her back to the place.  James had warned them about those kind of people anyway.  They weren't Thayan.  It didn't stop her heart from longing for home once more, though.  The second available option was not a choice in her mind and the third just seemed... cumbersome.

"I suggest we look elsewhere... or perhaps we leave the city and camp tonight.  None of these options are useable."
