If ever there was a kinder spirit who more embodied the meaning of the word "Benevolent," few have ever met them.
Josephine, having been raised by a single mother in Celadon City, was taught from a young age the value of life and the beauty of nature in all its forms (even the creepy crawlies). Though she normally has a special place in her heart for Grass Type Pokemon, Josephine's one true love has always been Fire Type after an encounter with a wandering Trainer's lost Rapidash. But that's a story best told another time.
Josephine is highly maternal and will dote upon just about anything that strikes her as "cute" or child-like.
However, it would not be an exaggeration to say she's practically wired to be what most would consider a bleeding heart. She can't stand the sight of anyone or anything getting hurt and will go out of her way to try and help in any way she can even if she's not properly equipped to do so at the time. Ask her mother about this and you'll receive a warm smile and a few stories of her daughter's borderline obsessive drive to protect, save, and shelter any and every living creature.
Josephine was born in the Kanto Region's Celadon City to a young single mother, Karla Dezantro. If asked about the circumstances behind the birth, Karla will dismiss the subject using cleverly disguised, though very passive aggressive, ways. The one thing she's proud to admit and speak openly about is that she was a Pokemon Gym Badge Contender with the goal of collecting the 8 Gym Badgs of the Kanto and Johto Regions until her pregnancy, after which she didn't hesitate for a nanosecond to drop her competitive dreams to raise her beautiful newborn.
Josephine's childhood was a wash of love and nurturing spirit thanks to her mother and her partner Pokemon Sawsbuck. The large deer Pokemon was as powerful as a bull, but as gentle as a feather when it came to the tiny human scurrying around the home and the backyard where he grazed. If ever Josephine fell down, he was instantly at her side judging her to stand. When she fell asleep outside in the spring and summer sun, he would curl up around her and use his head and antlers to shield her from the UV rays and prevent sunburns. During the winter he would hover around her to serve as a moving heater thanks to how well his fur trapped heat. To say the two were inseparable was an understatement.
Sadly, all good things come to an end. Having been with Josephine's mother since she was a teen, Sawsbuck passed away peacefully of old age when Josephine had just entered high school at the age of 14. Despite the peaceful nature of his passing, Josephine's heart was well and truly broken for months before she finally began to bounce back and become her old self again. Her friends in school certainly helped. But nothing helped her quite so much as a gift she'd received from her closest friend, Kira.
Exactly four months after Sawsbuck passed, Josephine received a handmade fan, crafted in the style of her favorite seasonal festival (Summer), with a pair of tassels on either end made of Sawsbuck's fur. When asked how she got it, Kira revealed that she foresaw the effect Sawsbuck's failing health would have on Josephine when he finally passed. So she secretly worked with Karla to preserve his fur and knit it into the tassels after he finally left this world. With a piece of Sawsbuck now with her, always, Josephine's heart steadily began its long road to recovery.
Following graduation from high school, Josephine attended Celadon University with a focus on Pokemon Mental Therapy. Through the focused use of song, dance, and physical touch, Pokemon could be brought back from hyper-aggressive states induced by neglectful and abusive owners, brought back from states of deep depression into a more manageable state, and helped to assist in overcoming various phobias. At age 22, she graduated with her Bachelor's Degree and chose to withdraw from the Master's Program when she felt the unyielding urge to leave Celadon for new horizons. Where this drive came from, she can't truly explain. But her mother could. Following a long and heartfelt discussion with her mother who saw this day coming since the day she was born, she explained to Josephine that this was the Competitor's Spirit showing itself for the first time within her. The same spirit which drove her mother to collet all 8 Kanto Gym Badges and the first 4 Johto Badges before her pregnancy put an end to her ambitions.
Josephine's mother accompanied her to the local Pokemon League Offices and helped her register for her Trainer's License. Following the basics (background check, psyche eval, etc), and a 24 hour wait period, Josephine was rewarded with her Pokedex and registration paperwork to prove she was a Trainer if ever the Pokedex was absent from her person when pressed by authorities. Afterwards, it was time to choose a Starter. And although she had initially considered choosing a Deerling to follow in her mother's footsteps, Josephine's heart was completely stolen by the presence of a single outcast on the list of available candidates. A 4 year old Alonan Ponyta. Why this beautiful creature was on the list was a mystery until she chose it and was warned by the League Official overseeing her selection that this individual had aggression problems due to a history of horrendous abuse by its former owner. Said abuses included lashings with a chain whip (which left horrible scars across Ponyta's left side), deliberately starving and dehydrating it in uneven spurts, tying it up with a rope around its neck and tying that rope to a ceiling rafter so it choked Ponyta if it strayed too far from a direct line beneath it, and much more.
In Josephine's own words, "Have the stars aligned?"
It was perfect. A Pokemon with such aggression issues was the perfect test of her educational studies. And with the Starter Chosen, and delivered less than a week later, Josephine bid a tearful farewell to her mother and began a journey to accomplish two things. First, to open Ponyta's heart. Second, to collect all 8 Badges from Kanto and Johto and finish the journey her mother started all those years ago.
