New Romantics (sped up)

"This definitely looks like a place I'd get killed. Like not even by this scary ass mutant, like I could just be walking here any night and I think someone would jump out and stab me or something."

"for once, I think everyone is too busy to be thinking about stabbing you, babe."

They and a few other patrons piled out into the alley, and the quiet was so loud compared to the inside of the club. Noise from their movements reverberated, but the quickly emptying city swallowed the sounds. In a place like Sentinal City, this was the kind of alley where you would often find traces of life, people taking out trash, sorting the recycling, stepping out for a smoke break, feeding stray cats, stray threads of conversation caught from open windows, even in an out of the way space like this.

No one they'd been in the club with attempted to stick around or form a group, only a few of them followed them out the backdoor and they wasted no time scattering, as eager to be out of the dark as Casper was. Did they have the right idea? Or would she and Casper be better off somewhere more hidden like this? Did they risk getting trapped, or risk becoming exposed? The only thing they knew was that the mutant was unpredictable.

"Should I have a gun? I mean, I think you should give me a gun. It's a really smart idea for me to have a gun in my hand right now, so I can fight off whatever psycho killer jumps out at us. AJ, I will literally make out with you right here right now if you give me a gun."

Ariel rolled her eyes. This was far from the first time they'd had the 'give me a gun' conversation, and indulging never went well. She'd had a habit of making all sorts of contraband in middle school, and the two of them had caused a LOT of property damage. For all Casper's stupid ideas, at least he was decisive, she could give credit where it was due, her brain was still stuck weighing the options, unable to move onto a solid decision. This was a terrible quality to have in a crisis, normally she had no trouble with it, but with her civilian best friend on the line, it was different from her regular duties with her guild. She hated being the responsible one so much.

"uh. No. Absolutely not."
She set down her axe to place a hand on her bare skin again, pulling and warping the skin, watching it stretch out into another wood handle until a metal head could be made out. Once she pulled the tail of the hammer head free, the skin rebounded like a ripple and settled back into the shape up her rib cage again. She presented it to Casper.

"There. You can threaten somebody now. If they get too close just smash their skull or something. No guns. "

She did
feel better now that he was at least armed with something.

"
So which way was your apartment again?" The last thing they needed right now was to be lost, but they'd ubered to the first club, and then followed some strangers to the second. Ariel had no idea what street they were even near. Jeremy would know what to do. Jeremy would also know how to not get lost. She really hoped he was alright and staying out of the line of fire. Knowing him, he was probably already reporting with SOTO and off to save civilians or psychoanalyze the bad guy into turning himself in or something. She hadn't brought her tekpad, she usually didn't if she didn't have anywhere to carry it.

Callum + Jetta

/* ------ main textbox ------ */
Most mutants would say they shined with their abilities. Maybe some had offensive abilities and could shine through battle and combat, some had defense powers and could shine while being supports for guild-mates. But not Callum. Nope, Callum shone brightest when flirting. Throughout his adult years, as he overcame his trauma and rediscovered himself, he seemingly perfected the art of flirting. Not too creepy, taking the lead, showing interest in a subtle way, picking up on the otherโ€™s hints, it was all a science to Cal at that point.

โ€ฆ

Too bad that wasnโ€™t the case that night with Jetta.

Nope, that night with Jetta, Callum felt completely off his game. He felt as though he was a giggling schoolgirl, unable to keep their cool and just be a human. His behavior wasnโ€™t a complete disaster, truth be told, but he certainly wasnโ€™t the cool, calm, cute flirt he usually was. Cal was definitely the cute klutz of the night.

Cal felt more at ease once they arrived at the bar; the walk was sweet, and Cal felt that he and Jetta were getting to know each other bit by bit, but he felt more at ease with more people around. The walk through the industrial district was one Callum wasnโ€™t used to. His normal walking paths tended to be to and from TEC and his home. Every now and then, heโ€™d go out with some friends from time to time, but never out to the industrial district. Callum tacked up his seemingly awkward demeanor to that, himself being hyper-aware of his new surroundings.

And wouldnโ€™t you know, that mightโ€™ve been the case! As the two sat and began ordering drinks, Cal eased much more into the flirty persona he was most comfortable with. Part of it might have been Cal seeing Jetta being more in her element, having greeted some of the people as they entered and sat down. Not that Jetta had been anything less than confident, but there was just something about a woman who had a known presence when she walked into a building, it was something very attractive for Callum.

Unfortunately, their time was interrupted by an emergency alert. Across every screen in the bar, there was a brightly colored message that was intended to get everyoneโ€™s attention. And the siren that blared through the speakers never failed to send a shiver down Calโ€™s spine.

Cal shared an uncertain look with Jetta before she began looking out into the crowd. She stood and began calling out to the other patrons at the bar, letting them know she and Cal would be more than willing to help them get to their homes safely in light of the emergency alert.

The grin that crept up on his face just couldnโ€™t be helped. Was helping everyone get home the first thing to come to Callumโ€™s mind? Not entirely, but he loved that it was Jettaโ€™s. It was a quality that drew him in to join TEC, their instinct to help others. Callum may not have been born with that instinct, but he certainly adapted it.

โ€œOh please, and let you have all the fun? Nah, youโ€™re stuck with me Jetty.โ€ He shot her a grin and gave her a nod as if signaling to her that he was ready to follow her lead.

While the emergency alert was a majorly disappointing interruption to getting to know Cal, Jetta knew she had to push that all aside. As a ragtagger, she had a duty to help and protect people, she couldnโ€™t be distracted with flirting at a time like this. Still, she couldnโ€™t help the uncontrollable smile that crept onto her face when Cal said that heโ€™d stay and help. Well then, she could multitask. It was so attractive when people wanted to help others, and as an added benefit, helping these people meant theyโ€™d be around each other for a bit longer. โ€œGlad to have you around, Bookworm.โ€ She laughed, emphasizing his cheesy mutant alias. โ€œLetโ€™s get these people out of here!โ€

She turned away from Cal and looked around at the small group of people who remained behind to be escorted home. โ€œSo, Iโ€™m going to need everyone to tell me where they live so I can find us the best way to get all of you back safely. Sound good?โ€ Jetta was met with nods and grateful affirmations. As people began to tell her where they needed to end up, she pulled out her TekPad, noting the locations on a map just to be sure that everyone was accounted for. She knew the area like the back of her hand, so it would be no trouble getting around. Well, as long as a certain unidentified mutant didnโ€™t get in their way. Since Cal definitely didnโ€™t know the industrial district as well as she did, she didnโ€™t expect him to do any navigating, but she made sure that he was also able to see her TekPad so he could get a sense of where they were going.

โ€œAlright, I think weโ€™re all set, letโ€™s get out of here guys!โ€ Jetta smiled brightly. Although there was a very real threat to their well-being on the loose, it was going to be even harder for everyone to get home if everyone was panicked. So, she did everything in her power to remain the very image of reassurance. Although she tried her best to focus up, the more she thought about the mutant on the loose, the more anxious she got. As she led the group out of the bar, side by side with Callum, she looked over at him. โ€œSeriously, thanks for sticking around. Itโ€™s nice to know I have someone watching my back.โ€ For the first time that day, there was a slight hint of vulnerability in her voice. She maintained her warm and positive tone, but she was ever so slightly less sure of herself, now worried about protecting both herself and other people. If these people didnโ€™t get home safe, sheโ€™d never forgive herself, but at least Cal would be there to help out if she needed it.

Callum had never been one to shy away from danger, but that didnโ€™t mean he was invincible to the fear that came with danger. He knew that there was a mountain of uncertainty that would loom over them the moment they stepped out the doors with a group of civilians. He knew that there was fear on everyoneโ€™s face from the emergency alert, he knew that a dangerous mutant was out on the streets, nobody knew who they were or where they were. Was Cal scared? Absolutely. But he had been scared in the past, and he made it through. He knew he, Jetta, and the rest of the civilians would make it through this night just like he had in his past.

Cal could sense an unfamiliar look in Jettaโ€™s eyes, something that wasnโ€™t her standard, bright confidence. This was her home, and if Cal was a betting man (which sometimes he is), he would bet that Jetta felt responsible for โ€œher peopleโ€. Living in the industrial district with all these folks, being her neighbors, waiters, store tenders, people she saw and interacted with every single day; he knew she felt a protective instinct over them, which directly caused her unease to rise as well. Cal reached and put a comforting hand on her shoulder.

โ€œWe got this. You lead the group, Iโ€™ll trail behind. Iโ€™ve got your back.โ€ He spoke confidently, starting to write something out in mid-air. With his hands in a similar posture to that of a musical conductor, Calโ€™s fingertips began to glow, as well as the word he wrote out: quiet. The word glowed a bit brighter upon its finished spelling just before it followed Callumโ€™s further movements. Cal gestured his hands as if he was throwing a blanket to rest on the tops of the civilianโ€™s heads; the letters spread out, following suit as if they were a whole blanket, and as they settled over the group, the lettersโ€™ glow slowly faded away. โ€œThat should keep us from drawing any extra attention to ourselves. We can still be seen, but we wonโ€™t have to worry about the mutant hearing any of us.โ€

Jetta found Calโ€™s hand on her shoulder comforting, she smiled at him in silent appreciation. Instinctively, she reached up and quickly grazed his fingers with her own before putting her arm back by her side. She was briefly concerned that this simple yet tender action was a bit too much for someone sheโ€™d just barely met, but her smile never wavered. She was just glad to be around him at the moment.

She watched with great interest as he raised his hands and began to write in the air. Never seeing an ability like this before, she was entranced as the word he wrote glowed brightly and spread over their group, then faded away like it was never there at all. โ€œWow, thatโ€™s really cool. Youโ€™ll have to show me what else you can do sometime,โ€ she chuckled.

As Cal drifted towards the back of the group, Jetta led them through the streets. With no threats coming at them right away, she felt pretty good about everyone getting home safe. Cal being somewhere behind her gave her one less thing to worry about. The only times sheโ€™d gotten herself into any really significant trouble was when she ventured out alone, but this time she wasnโ€™t.

Jetta made small talk with the people around her as they made their way to people's homes. With each person that arrived at their residence, she made sure they got inside and told them to stay safe. The industrial districtโ€™s lodging tended to be apartment buildings, so fortunately many people had similar destinations, making the task much easier. As the group thinned out, Jetta felt herself growing more and more comfortable. She wasnโ€™t worried for herself, just the people around her. But as soon as her people were safe indoors, she felt she could focus up a bit more on the task of keeping a lookout for this mystery mutant.

Dropping a final citizen off at their place, only Jetta and Cal were left. With his earlier reaction to the alert, wanting to stay with her as she got people to safety, she began to assume he wasnโ€™t going away anytime soon. โ€œI think Iโ€™m gonna keep a lookout for a bit. Wanna come with? I know a nice spot.โ€ She smiled, taking a few steps in the directions of the docks.

Cal grinned, he couldnโ€™t hide his enthusiasm. Maybe he shouldโ€™ve been a tad more seldom given their circumstances, but hey! All their civilians made it home safe and sound! Cut the guy some slack!

Truth be told, while a lot of his excitement was directed towards being around Jetta, he couldnโ€™t lie and say that was where all of it was directed. He was excited to be in the middle of such a thrill; an unknown, unidentified mutant on the streets where Callum just so happened to find himself. Most days, Cal stayed around TEC; the building, its facilities, its people. HIS people. Normal circumstances wouldnโ€™t lead Cal to complaining, and he certainly wasnโ€™t complaining, just noting the presence of security and the lack of imminent danger in his regular life.

All things considered, Cal liked his lifeโ€ฆ But he wouldnโ€™t be completely truthful if he admitted that there wasnโ€™t a mustard seed of envy that had slowly but surely grown in him. Every time he watched his friends, or even other guilds, jump at the chance to fight and defend. Callum couldnโ€™t remember the last time he had the chance to go into combat; he typically found himself within the walls of TEC; and even in the face of an off chance for Cal to join combat, heโ€™d always be considered a support. His ability not being as offensive as some, he always assumed his position in the back of the formation, providing aid however he could.

Again, certainly not complaining. Just, intrigued to be in the position he had envied just days ago.

It was a very easy yes for Callum, he signified to Jetta with a quick nod of his head. โ€œSure, Iโ€™ve got no plans for the rest of the night.โ€

Jetta smiled and began to lead Cal to one of her favorite lookout spots. She felt calmer than ever approaching the docks. The water was always soothing to her, whenever she could see it, hear it, smell it, or feel it, she felt right at home. As she looked out at the water she created a small wave that followed her and Cal as they walked along itโ€™s edge. Jetta tended to absentmindedly play with nearby water, it was like her personal stress toy at times, bringing her peace when nothing else could.

The duo arrived at an area with a few shipping containers. โ€œAlright, this is it. Not that exciting actually, but it can be kind of fun.โ€ She approached a container, โ€œI usually justโ€ฆโ€ She trailed off, beginning to expertly scale the containerโ€™s closed doors to get to the top. It was an ideal place to keep watch. She sat on the edge and beckoned for Callum to follow her. โ€œI usually do that to get up here, but you can do whatever. I can try to help you up, or you can do your thing and make a ladder or something. Iโ€™ve been climbing these things since I was a kid, itโ€™s not the easiest thing to get a hang of.โ€

With an overwhelming amount of false confidence, Calโ€™s response was smooth and easy going; โ€œNah, I think I can manage.โ€

Callum did his best to follow behind Jetta, trying to remember exactly where she grabbed and where she pushed herself up with her legs. He didโ€ฆ. Mediocre; he was sure it was a pathetic sight to behold as he made various attempts to hoist himself up through different spots on the shipping containers. Eventually, Cal was able to get his arms across the very edge of the container and hoist himself up. Rather clumsily, Cal rolled onto his back, letting out a sigh as he gave his muscles a break from the climbing.

It wasnโ€™t that Cal was out of shape, no no no, of course not. But thereโ€™s a big difference between swimming and, essentially, rock wall climbing. After taking a minute to catch his breath, Cal sat up and looked at the scenery that was before them. On one side, there were the docks. The stillness of the night working together with the fluidity of the water, empty ships gently bobbing up and down. On their other side were the sparkling lights of the city. Normally, Cal would love being able to stand far off somewhere and watch the city from far away. But something about what would normally be a pleasant sight in the context of being under an emergency shelter at home message gave Cal an eerie pit in his stomach.

โ€œWow, this looks like a great hangout spot to grow up with. The most I had was TEC.โ€ Cal situated himself next to Jetta, facing the city. The two got comfortable, prepared to sit on the lookout until the emergency warning was lifted.

The Strokes

Reptilia

Julian was a night owl, being up and about at this time was hardly unusual for him, but tonight just seemed to drag on. He'd thought it would be a relaxed night off, he'd planned to spend it overstaying his welcome at Cosmic Cabernet, drowning himself in drinks and lap dances until the bartender managed to boot him out the door. He'd barely made a dent in his old fashioned before everything had gone to hell. A multi-powered mystery mutant sounded like the exact kind of thing he needed to stick his nose into. He left a 20 on the bartop with his half finished drink and didn't bother announcing his departure, slipping out while the employees and patrons gathered around their tekpads and tried to decide if it was worth sticking around here.

It wouldn't be the worst location to hide, a better option than their home for a lot of the people milling about the club, but Julian was hardly going to learn anything worth while if he'd stayed put, so he'd been one of the first people out on the streets, for once actually taking on the command and responsibility afforded by his position. As he threw his duster back on and left the club, his transition from skeezy barfly to guild leader was seamless, assessing the situation as well as he could from street level and sending out a command through his tekpad to any Myriad executives to get their teams focused on clearing the streets. He wanted that mutant, and it was going to be much harder to get it if they had to weave through terrified civilians and collateral damage all damn night.

"Alright let's go, you don't have to go home but you can't stay here. Shelter is a block west, trains to the residential district are still running."

Nearly an hour passed that way, Julian juggling keeping track of Myriad executive reports, avoiding the cops and hero teams, and hearding as many stupid fucking civilians out of streets and buildings as possible to set the stage for his actual mission for the evening, tracking down and taking the body of their mystery assailant.

By the time it's getting dark and the streets have cleared out, and he can actually start on his planned mission, he's starting to drag. He'd also just spent a significant part of the evening armed and barking orders, which meant that he was going to come across as far more conspicuous than he would like to. It was time to ditch his body like a car with dirty plates to find something he could creep around in. Something that he could be stealthy in, but wouldn't arise suspicion. He didn't like taking over kids, adults were all fucked, even the 'good' ones, but Julian actually liked kids despite avoiding them, but it might be his best bet. A small body could sneak around easily and if he ran into a hero, they'd simply feel compelled to 'save' him. A child would likely throw off their mystery mutant enough to give him a significant edge as well. Good thing they tended to sleep hard.

TW: Kidnapping. Kind of? No children are harmed but it is SKETCHY behavior. Sir what are you doing.

His assistance in the evacuation effort had taken him much closer to the edge of the eastern sector. It took more time than he would have liked to find an opportune victim, a young girl peacefully sleeping through the chaos in view of a window. God this was weird. With any luck, she'd have no memory of anything odd happening. He reached into his pockets for the sleeping pills he kept on him, and swallowed them dry. With those in his bodies system, the kid was likely to just stay asleep. As long as he was back within a few hours, no one would be the wiser and he would have a much better chance at apprehending the most valuable asset currently in the city. It was worth the risk of the parents attempting to get him arrested. At least that's what he told himself as he cracked open the window.

______________________________

Getting out of the room was significantly easier than getting into it. The kid had sweats and a little t-shirt, and he'd slid on a pair of shoes that had been sitting by the bed. This was about the only scenario that he felt uncomfortable with his power. Adjusting to the wildly different level of strength and perspective shift was far different than an adult, he also never really felt guilty invading another person like this, kids tended to be the exception. Confident that the ends would justify the means, he shook off the feeling, determined to get to the best vantage point he could find to try and pinpoint the targets location. Occasional reports from Myriad officers also helped to narrow down his search at least somewhat. He set his sights on the central district, figuring it would be the easiest to get to a sighting from there, it also had the tallest rooftops with the best views in case his target was the type to make a spectacle of himself.

Traveling on foot in this body proved a challenge. Shorter legs and smaller lungs made it difficult to clear ground even in a walkable city like Sentinel. He ended up having to utilize one of the few automated tracks still running in the emergency before he could get to the central district. This was all proving to be so much of an ordeal than it normally would. By the time he'd used his breaking and entering skills to get to the roof of a tall office building, Julian had half a mind to give up the whole plan. Especially when it became clear he wasn't the only one with this idea, as he spotted another shadowy figure, just barely visible.

This creepy back alley was fucking with Casper's head. He watched those that left the club behind them flee in a hurried manner, rushing to safety. They seemed to have the right idea. Fleeing blindly into the night was extremely tempting, but he'd do whatever Ariel thought would be best, and hopefully that would involve giving him a gun.

Much to Casper's disappointment, his request was met with a hard no. He gave a dramatic huff of disappointment and was about to make an annoyed quip before his attention was pulled towards watching Ariel pull another item out of her body. Seeing a wooden handle, he was glad that something was being done to make sure he was capable of protecting himself. But this time, watching his friend use her ability came with a tiny pang of jealousy. That happened sometimes. Seeing her or Jeremy use their powers could leave him feeling rather bland. He wished he could do something entertainingโ€”or even actually useful. He shook the feeling off quickly though; he was careful not to let it linger long enough to get in the way of his closest friendships.

Casper couldn't help but laugh at his new tool for self-defense. "A hammer? Do I look like a handyman to you?" He took it from Ariel without hesitation anyway; he clearly wasn't all that bothered by the choice. It wasn't a gun, but at least it was something. "I guess it'll do. This mutant's not gonna know what hit them." He held the hammer out like a sword, making precarious, threatening motions.

He scrunched his nose, looking up and down the alley as he thought about which way to go. He was never very good with directions. "This way," he said, grabbing Ariel's hand and marching down to one end of the alley, prepared to use his hammer at a moment's notice. But when they reached where the alley connected with the main road, Casper paused and shook his head. "Nope, this was definitely the wrong way. It was a 50/50 shot, I guess."

He spun on his heel and headed for the other end of the alley. While he wasn't fantastic about knowing where to go, at least opting to walk most places during the day had made him familiar with the visual cues of the city. Sure enough, he was met with more familiar sights at the other end of the alley, getting a vague sense of where they were. "So, this may take some trial and error, but we're definitely getting closer." He turned left and started down a main road. "Honestly, for how much trouble this mutant has caused usโ€”you know, ruining our night out and allโ€”I almost hope they come for us. Then I can get a chance to use this slightly disappointing hammer." He was just being dramatic; of course he didn't want an encounter with a potentially deadly mutant. But Casper was never one to think through his words, so he stuck to the over-the-top statement.
