Going back to Seoul felt surreal after so long the city that she once called home felt like a completely different place, an unknown setting that once was the place of the happiest memories of Nari but also the place with her saddest memories, she thought that going back to Seoul would never happen after her father was sent to jail and her mother decided that they should go to Gwangju to live to don't live in the eye of the hurricane and somehow start over again, but did they were able to start a new life? Nari could still remember all those nights she heard her mother crying in the night because her husband was in jail because of something he never did in the first place or how Nari had to create this story about her father because in her mother's words a white lie could not hurt anyone and that's what she was doing by lying where her father was.

Maybe at the age of 12, Nari couldn't really comprehend the situation of what happened, and she was just sad that her father wouldn't come with them to Gwangju and was completely devastated she couldn't say goodbye to Kiki when she promised they would play together the next day and she couldn't show him the magic trick she was practicing because at 12 years old Nari thought she was the coolest magician just by being able to disappear a coin, but now at the age of 17, Nari wasn't interested anymore in magic and she finally understood what happened to her father and how he was falsely accused and was sent to jail.

So, when her mother said they were moving back to Seoul because of her promotion in her job, Nari was a little taken back, she thought that it was already established that Seoul didn't exist and the farther they went from the city was the best for them, but moving back to Seoul meant they would be closer of Nari's father even if they could only see each other in visiting hours, but maybe being close to the one that you love was better even if they were separated by a glass than being miles away from them.

And as soon as she could realize Nari and her mother was already back in Seoul and a new year was starting, maybe changing schools in your last year wasn't the best since everyone already knew each other and adding someone new at last minute was not always liked by everyone, but that wouldn't bring her down, Nari knew she was friendly enough to make new friends and have people liked her, she was sure there would be someone that would become her friend maybe it wouldn't be as close as Kiki or her friends in Gwangju but she wouldn't lose faith that there was going to be someone nice in her new school.

So when the day came, Nari was more than excited to start a new year and meet her new classmates, but maybe she wasn't expecting how her actual school would be or what kind of students go there, sure she was a student with a scholarship but that wasn't common? Well maybe it wasn't since she first noticed that she was the only one taking the school bus and that enter the school walking while she just continuously saw expensive cars following each other to the main entrance of the school and how the kids had accessories or backpacks that seemed more expensive than all the clothes that Nari own, but maybe they were nice people even if they were rich, she was sure real life wasn't like in those dramas she saw where the rich kids were obnoxious.

With a positive attitude, Nari went towards her classroom with the mindset that this would be her best year it didn't take long until the teacher arrived to start the lesson, and as usual, the teacher asked her to introduce herself in front of the class, standing up in front of her classmates felt a little overwhelming she could notice everyone's eyes in front of her and maybe some of them were judging her or maybe she was just imagining things, she was for sure they were curious about her just like she was curious about them too "Hello! My name is Seo Nari, I just moved here from Gwangju, and I really hope we can all get along!" she said brightly looking forward to her new start

The classroom buzzed with activity, as always, like they hadn't slept at 2am and been forced to wake up 4.5 hours later to get ready for school. Maybe they hadn't. Maybe it was just him. Maybe it was just because his idiot of a best friend had suddenly called him in the late hours to try out some horror game. They had finished that around midnight, which wasn't too late, to be fair... he just couldn't sleep after that.

Anyway, the point was that Ki-Hoon wasn't nearly as excitable as the rest seemed to be, even about the new student coming in today. There was always a few transfers around the start of the year, and they were either just like everyone else or one of those mousy, quiet scholarship students that quickly ended up loners. Ki-Hoon didn't care much for either group, or for anyone who wasn't already his friend, in general. It was tiring to make new relationships and he hardly need any, so why would he bother?

He leaned back into his chair, crossing his legs & closing his eyes as he waited for class to start. Thanks to being positioned all the way in the back of the room, he currently had no desk-mate. But neither did a couple other kids in the same row, so he wasn't too worried about being stuck with the new student. His teachers wouldn't be mean enough to put whoever the poor dude was beside him, of all people, right? They should know he wasn't going to be friendly at all.

As he was starting to relax after that thought, a force abruptly landed on his shoulder with a smack, making Ki-Hoon jolt upright. He glared over his shoulder at the culprit, too be met with the grinning face of Kim Jung-Rak, above mentioned horror-loving idiot. His eyes flickered toward the front of the classroom, where the teacher's seat that Mr Lee had been occupying was empty once again.

"The new student's a girl," Rak announced, plopping into the chair beside his, "and she's super cute, I saw her just now." Ki-Hoon's only response was a scoff. There were a lot of girls his wayward best friend thought was, quote unquote, super cute. The bar wasn't set nearly high enough to pique his interest in the slightest.

His unenthusiastic reaction didn't deter Rak, who was probably too used to it to even notice, as the boy continued in his overly-dramatic way, "Ah, maybe it's finally my time for romance to bloom, don't you think?" Another unimpressed look from Ki-Hoon. What the hell did he mean, finally? The guy had more dating experience than probably half the class combined. He was much more deserving of his 'Player' label than Ki-Hoon was of 'Ice Prince'. Both equally stupid epithets, but, still.

Distracted by their banter, Ki-Hoon missed the moment that new girl walked into the classroom, only alerted by Rak's stage-whispers about her arriving. He looked up, curious despite himself, only to see... an oddly familiar face. His expression shifted, and he subconsciously leaned forward, suddenly focused on the very person he'd been claiming not to give a damn about before.

Rak sounded smug as he said, "I told you she was pretty." And she honestly was, but that wasn't the point. That was clearly a face he knew. A face from a now-distant past. Ki-Hoon ignored his friend in favor of listening to the teacher's demanded introduction from her. Her answer was both surprising and expected at once.

"Hello! My name is Seo Nari, I just moved here from Gwangju, and I really hope we can all get along!" She said, cheery as ever. If he wasn't already quiet before, it would have been apt to say that she'd made him speechless. Seo Nari. Seo Nari. The girl he used to play with. That kid who used to come over just to boss him around all the time and then had the guts to suddenly disappear on him.

Ki-Hoon forced himself to lean back so he didn't seem too interested, but his mind became a whirlwind of thoughts. So much so that he barely noticed when Mr Lee thanked Nari for her introduction and then asked her to choose a seat.

Nari wasnโ€™t expecting that all her classmates would receive her excitedly and if they were waiting for her arrival, but at least she thought she would receive some kind of reply to her presentation. Did she said something wrong? She tried to remember anything she said and was sure she didnโ€™t say anything to upset anybody, maybe she was just overthinking everything or teens in Seoul were completely different than in Gwangju.

Just as she finished her presentation, Mr. Lee, her now teacher told her to choose a seat, Nari took a look at the classroom and she didnโ€™t have a lot of options only the seats at the back of the classroom, first she looked a one girl who made sure to put her bag in the empty chair as she looked at Nari almost telling her, she would kill her if she came to sit there, the next guy was completely scary and Nari was sure she felt worried for her life by looking at the guy, the third guy was the complete opposite of the last guy, he was the only one that seem excited that she was there maybe too excited, she was sure that if he had more time he would have put a big sign with lights telling her to sit next to him. As much as Nari was an extrovert she wasnโ€™t sure if she wanted to have that much of attention on her.

And the last guy, he for sure was the complete oposite of excited guy, he just seemed completely uninterested in her, but at least he wasnโ€™t scary although something about him felt familiar, but she couldnโ€™t point what it was maybe he looked similar to the main character of the webtoon she was reading last night, no that couldnโ€™t be, he seemed like someone she knew before she moved out the first time, could it be him? No, it couldnโ€™t be Kiki. What were the odds that she would end on the same school as her childhood friend? It was almost impossible but that didnโ€™t meant it couldnโ€™t happen.

Maybe it was the familiarity that make her go towards him and take a seat next to him, she smiled at him if they didnโ€™t become friends at least they could be friendly to each other. Mr. Lee announced he would be gone for a moment so they needed to start reading the chapter for the class, as soon as he left Nari turned to her now deskmate โ€œI hope we get along, you can call me Nari. Whatโ€™s your name?โ€ She asked with a smile, but as soon as she finished another voice was heard making Nari to turn her head to face the stranger โ€œYou wonโ€™t get a reply from him, he wants to believe he is too cool for everyone, Iโ€™m Kim Jung-Rak and he is Choi Ki-Hoonโ€ Her classmate said. So Kim Jung-Rak and Choi Ki-Hoon wait did he just said Choi Ki-Hoon, now the familiarity made sense the guy who was sitting next to her was her childhood friend. โ€œKiki! Is that really you!?โ€ She said, as she turned back to face her deskmate, and she might have said it too loud, since she received some dirty looks from her classmates, for sure Nari wasnโ€™t making the best first impression on her class.

โ€œDo you two know each other? And what kind of nickname is Kiki? Isnโ€™t that nickname a little bit ridiculous?โ€ Rak said, making Nari felt embarrassed. Was Kiki really embarrassing? She thought it was cute but maybe 17 year old Kiki didnโ€™t like it anymore โ€œWe are childhood friends, we used to play all the time when we were kidsโ€ Nari replied โ€œI see, why you never told me about your childhood friend Kiki?โ€ Rak asked teasingly.

Was she going to sit next to him? No way. She was walking over here. Their eyes met for a brief second, and Ki-Hoon felt his heart stutter. No way. Really? Were they so abruptly about to deskmates after not having seen each other for five whole years? He tensed up as she approached, getting closer and closer until she finally sat in the empty chair beside his.

As her bright voice sounded from so damn close beside him, Ki-Hoon swallowed, subconsciously leaning away from her in his mild hysteria. He barely even heard her introduction as he tried to figure out what to do. Did she know who he was? It didn't seem like she recognized him. Should he tell her? Would she remember if he said his name? Oh, shit, was he coming off cold right now? Wait, why did it matter if he did? He was like that to everyone, so it's fine... right? Right?

In the moment of silence that passed while he was trying to straighten out his thoughts, Rak had already taken it upon himself to introduce them both. Ki-Hoon felt a slightly bitter taste enter his mouth. Why was that guy always so quick to speak up? He wants to believe he is too cool for everyone, was what his useless friend said about him. Which wasn't true. Well... mostly. Ki-Hoon barely had time to register this development when Nari's reaction had him even more speechless.

"Kiki! Is that really you?!" Was her loud, excited reply, which practically echoed throughout the room, drawing multiple questioning gazes toward them. Ki-Hoon's own eyes widened. Oh my god. That nickname. It didn't suit the current him at all. He felt embarrassment rush like a tidal wave over him. He uncrossed his legs and crossed them again, suddenly unsure what to do with his limbs in that moment of awkwardness.

โ€œWe are childhood friends, we used to play all the time when we were kids,โ€ Nari explained oh-so naively to Rak's teasing question, while the other boy's grin grew even more amused. Why didn't you tell me about her, Kiki? The guy dared to ask. Obviously it was because he would tease Ki-Hoon to the ends of Earth about it. His face felt hotter the more he thought about it. Damn it. Crybaby Kiki was supposed to be dead and buried in middle school. He couldn't believe his first time seeing Nari again after so long was going like this.

"What the hell is Kiki?" He blurted out before he could stop himself, in an attempt to avoid the humiliation. His tone came out dry and just a little bit sharp as he continued with a dismissive, "I don't remember."

"Aw, what, come on, Kiki." Rak unfortunately went on with his joking, "Our new friend will be sad if you forget, don't you think?"

Ki-Hoon silently leveled him a seemingly uninterested glance before looking away, suddenly finding the whiteboard in front very interesting. "Whatever," he scoffed, resting his chin on one hand โ โ€” a tried-and-tested, 100%-success-rate, way of looking nonchalant โ€” as his eyes stayed fixed to the front.

Which were the odds that she would be on the same high school, in the same class, and even that they were deskmates? It was almost as if destiny brought them back together, Nari felt so happy that it was sure her bright smile showed how glad she was to have a friend and no other than Kiki, she could still remember how many times she cried to her mother saying she needed to go back to Seoul because she needed to protect Kiki, otherwise, the kids would tease him and he would cry and she hated seeing Kiki cry.

Nari got a little bit surprised when Rak said he never talked about her, maybe since they meet in high school it was kind of obvious he would not talk about her childhood friend, but she did talk about him sometimes when she and her friends talk about their childhood.

Nari turned to see Kiki as Rak made his question and that's when she noticed that his face was flushed, without thinking she touch KiKi's forehead just like when they were kids "Kiki, are you feeling sick? Your face is hot" she said a little worried, but then she was taken back by Kiki's statement "What the hell is Kiki? I don't remember" Those words really hurt Nari, she thought that his nickname was special to both of them, but it seemed it wasn't like that anymore "But Kiki is the nickname I gave you because I had trouble saying your name when we were kids" she added, but it seemed that he wasn't having none of it, even after Rak said Nari would be sad if he forgot.

Maybe Kiki wasn't happy to see her, maybe he was upset about everything that happened in the past but he should know that her father wasn't a bad person and Nari was not mean either, after their introduction Mr. Lee came back and the class started but it was like if a wall was built between her and Kiki, even if they were extremely close.

Once the time for the lunch, Nari wasn't sure if Kiki would invite her to eat with him, probably Rak would do it but there wasn't any sign of the guy, maybe she could ask one of her classmates if she could join them for lunch, that way she could start making friends, and wouldn't have to depend on Kiki, she wouldn't be a burden to him, so he won't have to worry for her.

As soon as she decided she was going to try and join any of her classmates a group of girls approached her she smiled at them, but they didn't seem too friendly as she took a seat around her, she was a little confused by the tension on the environment "Who do you think you are, coming like that and talking to Ki-Hoon like that? And what's with that stupid nickname? What are you five years old? Why don't you get in your place? Like the poor person that you are, he won't even notice you, he is just pitying you, so don't try to come and act as you belong here when you can't even pay the full tuition, I'm sure your dad is a pathetic employee or something like that or maybe he doesn't have a job which would fit her even more" Those girls said to Nari, she held her skirt tightly trying not to let those words affect her, this wasn't the way how her first day was supposed to go.

CHOI KI-HOON

location: seoul academy, classroom 3-A

mood: what the hell is this

outfit: school uniform (without jacket)

interactions: Nari | Other Classmates

He didn't even know how, but class ended and it was finally time for lunch. Finally time for a break from Nari's distracting presence so he could think this through. Ki-Hoon stood up the moment class was dismissed, almost too quickly, walking past his new deskmate โ€” damn was that still a weird thought to have, Seo Nari being his high school deskmate โ€” to grab Rak by the shoulder and drag him along out of the room before the other boy could protest.

He needed to calm down for a bit. His mind was still freaking out over the unexpected appearance of a friend from the past. His best friend, at that, and someone who had left in such a terrible way without goodbye. But the further he walked down the corridor, Rak's rambling about some social media trend serving as background noise, the more worries wrought his mind. Would Nari be able to find people to have lunch with? It was her first day, after all, she couldn't spend lunch alone. That was just clearly marking herself as a total loser, and those types didn't exactly lead great lives in their school. She wouldn't do that. Right? Right?

...Ah, damn it.

"Hey, I'm gonna just get a snack from the vending machine," he spoke up suddenly, interrupting Rak midway through a sentence. Nevermind that he was the one to lead them toward the canteen in the first place, or that they were already just one hallway away from their destination. Without another word, he patted his friend on the shoulder as he turned around. He wasn't worried at all about Rak, on the other hand. Dude would find some way to survive on his own, he was pretty sure.

Grabbing a couple packed sandwiches from the machine so he could pretend that's what he left for, Ki-Hoon headed back to class, purposely slowing down his steps so he didn't seem too eager. He wondered to himself what he was even going to say โ€” hey, do you want to eat lunch with me? That was so... lame. How do people even ask for things? Ki-Hoon had spent most of his life just being given what he wanted. He did what he wanted, and others just agreed.

By the time he'd arrived at the classroom door, he still hadn't come up with anything. And when he saw what was going on inside, he realized he had bigger things to be worried about. A group of girls stood around Nari, whispering and giggling, while the center of their attention sat there looking uncomfortable as hell. He might have assumed they were just checking out the new girl, if it weren't for Lee Da-Young sitting ever so smugly at his seat, watching the ongoing commotion.

Da-Young was a girl Ki-Hoon had made the mistake of being nice to on a few occasions, and now assumed they were...buddies, or something. She was an annoying, sticky presence. Was that mean to think? Probably. Was it the truth? Absolutely. Was he ever going to tell her that straight up, though? No. That would just be like following right down to her level.

As he neared the table, he caught the end of their scathing words aimed at Nari. His first thought was already? A lot of his schoolmates liked to haze newcomers, but they weren't usually so upfront about it from the get-go. His second thought was that he shouldn't have left Nari here alone. If she was still anything like before, then she was still an idiot โ€” a brave one, sure, but still stupid. She should just have gotten up and walked away already, since she clearly didn't want to be there.

With pursed lips, Ki-Hoon walked up to the table, practically throwing his food onto it. Da-Young scrambled up, clearly surprised to se him, but smiled a winning smile all the same.

"Hey! Hoon-ah, I thought you- you're not going to the cafeteria?" She asked, brushing back a strand of hair behind her ear as was her apparent favorite action. That hair just fell back down anyway, so he wasn't really sure why she did it at all, let alone so often. Pulling back his thoughts from that brief derailing, Ki-Hoon glanced over at Nari. He had intended to go. With her. But...

"No," he replied, his tone curt as he strode past Da-Young to reclaim his seat beside Nari, "it's too crowded today." A blatant lie, of course. But who was going to tell him different? Not this bunch, that's for sure.

"Aren't you guys going?" He asked, finally looking up at the group of girls properly, but they just avoided his gaze in favor of looking at their posse's leader for the answer. He often wondered why the rest of them never talked to him, or even replied to his questions, when they were together. It wasn't as if he was going to bite them.

"Oh, well, if it's crowded then-" Da-Young started, and Ki-Hoon could already predict the ending of her sentence. And he didn't like it. He didn't want them to keep hovering around Nari. Why? Because... because... ... well, he just didn't. They'd interrupted his plans for lunch, too. That was why he was so irritated by them. Yeah.

"Hey," he interrupted her mid-sentence, his voice gaining a hint of annoyance, "I'm saying: go." Da-Young froze for a second, but then smiled again as she acquiesced. He was sure he caught a glare thrown in Nari's direction as the girl left. He glanced at the cause of all this commotion. If this was anyone else, he'd say she was done for. Say goodbye to the possibility of a peaceful life in school and hello to eating at that gloomy corner in the corner of the canteen where everyone with no group of friends to join sat.

He frowned. That wasn't going to happen to Nari though. Since she'd already let people know that they used to be friends, he couldn't possibly let her become an outcast. He can't be associated with someone like that. That's why he was concerned about this. Yes.

With a short sigh, he pushed the sandwiches toward Nari. He couldn't possibly go to the cafeteria now, and he wasn't about to let her go off alone. Because she'd ruin his reputation by getting messed with by those girls, of course.

"I don't want those," he said in a feeble attempt to explain his actions, "you have it." He paused. What if she didn't get the message? And so he added a stiff, "Here."

Nari couldnโ€™t understand how people could be so rude to a stranger, those girls didnโ€™t know anything about her and still they were trash tealking her, right in front of her, that situation just made her incredible uncomfortable, she just wanted to tell those girls that they were rude and what was the problem that she was a student with an scholarship? At the end of the day they were still classmates.

She was ready to say something back to that group of girls, when she was interrupted by someone throw food into the desk next to hers. Thatโ€™s when she turned and saw Kiki, and just as he made her entrance the leader of the group transformed from bully mode to flirty mode. It was more than obvious that Da-Young was trying to get Kikiโ€™s attention. Nari was sure, she wasnโ€™t the type of girl that Kiki was interested, not like she even knew, she only had for reference crybaby Kiki, that was adorable, but still a crybaby. Life was so crazy that maybe Kikiโ€™s ideal type was an older woman and here she was thinking he would date a highschooler.

When he replied to Da-Young, it made Nari suprised, the answer was a simple no, but the way he said was completely different from the one she remember from Kiki, back then the kid couldnโ€™t defend himself and she was sure he was scared to say that word, but now he said it without a problem and in a stern way, that it made Nari wondered if it was really the same person.

And it seemed Da-Young wouldnโ€™t take a no from answer since she was already thinking on a way to spend time with Kiki, but he wasnโ€™t having none of it since he interrupted mid sentence Iโ€™m saying go he said to Da-Young, but the way he said it, it was almost as if he was a completely different person. What happened to the Kiki he knew?

This new Kiki was really something he could defend on his own, maybe she shouldnโ€™t have been so worried all those years since he was doing just fine. Nari saw those girls leaving the classroom as she noticed that Kiki was pushing his sandwiches towards her as he said he didnโ€™t want them. She smiled at him maybe kind Kiki was somehow still there.

โ€œI was ready to say something to those girls when you arrived, but you were so cool Kik... Ki-Hoon-ahโ€ she said trying not to say his nickname, something that she thought, it was special between the two now it was annoying and dumb to everyone even to Kiki himself โ€œThe way you said Iโ€™m saying go was super cool, like a scene that was taken out of a drama, it gave me the chills. Itโ€™s the complete opposite of when we were kidsโ€ she added.

She remembered the sandwiches that he gave her, she for sure had more food than she anticipated โ€œThank you for the sandwiches, but I brought my own lunchbox, but since you gave me this Iโ€™ll give my lunch to youโ€ she said as she took out the container from her bag and pushed it towards Kikiโ€™s desk โ€œHere! I made it myself, my grandmother taught me how to cook, I hope you like it! And it has vegetables, I finally liked them, do you remember when we used to have lunch together and I always wanted to throw away my vegetables? Or maybe you donโ€™t remember, but itโ€™s okay, you donโ€™t have to remember it, is not a big deal either way eat the foodโ€ she said happily as she gave a bite of her sandwich.

CHOI KI-HOON

location: seoul academy, classroom 3-A

mood: oh my god

outfit: school uniform (without jacket)

interactions: Nari

Ki-Hoon watched Nari take the sandwiches with some satisfaction, then pulled out his phone to ask Rak to help him buy something for him to eat later on the way back. He was mid-way through that action when the girl's next words made him freeze. She said a lot of words, but he'll admit the main ones he heard were "so cool" and "like a scene from a drama", and the rest seemed overwhelmed by the power of those couple phrases.

Part of him thought this was a matter of course. He knew he was cool. Almost everyone around him acted like he was, even when he wasn't doing anything, so he just accepted that as a fact, as an innate trait he apparently just possessed. Was that narcissistic? Possibly. But can you blame him? No. You can't.

Another part of him, though, started to descend into flustered confusion. That was just so... straightforward of her. Saying it like that had to be against some kind of social rule, wasn't it? He was used to girls like Da-Young, whose words could circle once around the block before they got to their meaning. Never just a blunt, outright "you were super cool".

He coughed a couple times, sitting upright in his seat just to lean back awkwardly into its back again, trying & failing to play off his surprise. His eyes darted around the room, hoping no one caught that moment of stupidity. Be cool, man, he scolded himself, only be reminded of her words and feel his face get even hotter. He sneaked a glance in her direction, wondering if she really felt no embarrassment or anything saying what she just said, but Nari was already focused on taking some box out of her bag.

"Iโ€™ll give my lunch to you," She said cheerily as she put the plastic container onto his desk. Ki-Hoon blinked, before making to refuse โ€” he was pretty picky with his food, especially when it came to home-cooked dishes. Nari, however, didn't let him get the word in as she continued talking about it. I made it myself, she said, and suddenly rejecting it felt like a sin. She cooked it. She, with her own hands, made whatever was in this little box. Herself. Nari. Seo Nari. Her. She made it. He closed his mouth.

"And it has vegetables, I finally liked them, do you remember when we used to have lunch together and I always wanted to throw away my vegetables?" she rattled on. He did remember. He didn't like them either, but he wasn't as good at sneaking them off his plate, so he was always left eating more than her and could only pout about it to himself. God he was so... weird back then. Still, it was a funny memory. He smiled without even knowing it as he finally looked at her properly.

Nari muttered a few more words before taking a bite off the sandwich he'd given her, looking kind of like that hamster he used to own as she chewed. She'd grown up, obviously, but she still looked about the same as before. Still as cute as ever. She- wait. Oh god. What the hell did he just think? Cute? Yeah, right. She was a little devil in human skin back then. Tried to con him into climbing trees, she did. A real wild child; he shuddered to think what would have became of him if he spent even more time than he had then with her.

"I remember," he suddenly replied, finally resolving to open the box, "you would always put them into my plate, but I sucked at sneaking mine into yours, so I had to eat for both of us. It was terrible." His tone was somewhat deadpan, but it also had a hint of its real joking nature. Who knows which tone Nari caught, though.

He peered into the box with some hesitance, only to realize it looked pretty good. His eyes flickered around the room again, not wanting anyone who knew he didn't bring food from home to notice him with the lunchbox, lest there be questions. Nobody. Great. He looked again at Nari, the creator of this box. The realization hit him once again that he was about to eat from a lunchbox prepared by Nari, whom he hadn't seen in years before this. What kind of situation was this?

He kept glancing back and forth between the girl and the warm food, feeling his right state of mind take a sharp left turn. Was this... real life? Some kind of fever dream? Was anything real, at all? Was he dead? If he was, did that mean this was his version of heaven? Or, hell? With that philosophical whirlwind of thoughts ravaging the remains of his common sense, Ki-Hoon picked up the utensils, and slowly picked up the first mouthful to try.

He blinked in surprise, the storm in his mind coming to a halt at the taste. It's... he began, before controlling his too-happy tone, not bad.

Sharing lunch with Kiki it almost felt as if they were back to when they were kids, and they would eat snacks together, sharing their favorites with the other and just talking about silly stuff, life was so simple back then when the problems of the adults didn't interfere in their friendship.

Sure, some people would be confused about why she was kind and friendly to the kid of the people that didn't believe in her father and turned their back on him, most people would be angry and would want to take revenge for destroying someone's family. But Nari couldn't do that to anyone and even less Kiki, he was her best friend no matter the distance and the time that passed.

Could they be as close as they once were? Probably no, people change as time passed and none of them were the same kids that they were the last time they saw each other, but she wanted to try, she wanted, to have Kiki back in her life, because even if Nari was happy most of the time, Nari was happiest when she was next to him.

But just seeing him, put a smile on her face, she wanted to know when Kiki changed so much, he got taller, and his cute and adorable baby cheeks were gone too. He wasn't adorable anymore, well, just a little bit if she needed to describe Kiki's appearance, she would say he was handsome, thinking that felt weird since she knew him. And he was the opposite of handsome and manly, but this Kiki somehow it was, would Kiki already had his first girlfriend or would he still be scared of being around other girls that weren't her?

Nari almost jumped from happiness when he said remember she didn't like vegetables and how she always used to put them on his plate and couldn't sneak his, so he remembered that kind of stuff, he wouldn't hold a grudge for that, right? They were just kids back then, and back then Nari didn't know what she was doing, well, even until this day she didn't know what she was doing most of the time, but still.

"Yeah, I remember that too. Sorry about that I just wanted to get rid of them back then." She admitted embarrassed, were her face was getting red or the classroom was just getting hotter. When she saw Kiki grabbed the utensils, Nari almost held her breath it. She wanted him to like her food. She wasn't sure why, but she just wanted him to do it.

It's... not bad." Was the replied she got from him and she almost felt like she had won a prize. "Really!? Do you like really it? That makes me so happy! From now on I'll make more so we can eat together." She said excitedly, making once again having the people that were still in the classroom giving her dirty looks, why they were so angry all the time, they needed to relax "Well, only if you like." She added, trying not to push Kiki into agreeing with her.

"Now tell me all the fun stuff you did while I was gone. I want to know everything that you did, so don't hide anything!"

CHOI KI-HOON

location: seoul academy, classroom 3-A

mood: what am I doing

outfit: school uniform (without jacket)

interactions: Nari

"Really!?" Nari squealed, the uninhibited happiness in her tone making her sound like an excited kid, drawing the attention of the class to them once again. Ki-Hoon paused right before his hands reached the spoon for his second mouthful, tensing up in embarrassment on both their behalfs. His new desk-mate, on the other hand was either blissfully unaware or miraculously unaffected.

"Do you like really it? That makes me so happy! From now on I'll make more so we can eat together," the girl continued, calmer but still with that cheerful, melodic lilt to her voice. It's okay, he wanted to say. That sounded like way too much work when there was perfectly okay food in the cafeteria, too. Or maybe he just thought that way because he knew nothing about cooking and was overestimating its complexity.

"Well, only if you like," Nari added like an afterthought, suddenly much quieter. Ki-Hoon stared at her for a second. Could he still reject her after that? He felt a weird pang of guilt just at the thought of it. But it seemed equally weird to agree to it. He'd only ever seen couples doing things like that โ€” or, at least, more-than-friends โ€” and although Nari wasn't technically a stranger, they weren't really close enough to do that anymore. Were they? Was he just thinking too much?

He wasn't given time to arrive at a conclusion as Nari asked her question about his life during the time they'd been apart. What an abrupt girl, he mused to himself. Still, she seemed to be the same as ever in how no moment spent around her felt dull, at least to him. He always thought that was why they became such fast friends when they were younger: she made the mood and the conversation all on her own, dragging him along at her pace but... so cheerfully that he didn't feel at all upset by it.

He bet she'd had an interesting life even without him. She was just that type of person, who could enjoy the little things. Contrary to him. What had he done in the past five years? Go to school. Study. Play horror games at night with Rak to give himself nightmares. All in all, nothing much. At least, nothing that really made sense to talk about right now. He'd just come off like an oddball. Wouldn't he? Maybe not. Or...

He should be replying to her. His silence was starting to stretch too long as if he was ignoring her question. He hadn't even taken more than a couple of bites from her lunch because he'd been too busy trying to get his thoughts straight. Ki-Hoon glanced at Nari, mulling over his words for a second longer before finally opening his mouth, ready to give his reply.

And that was, of course, when the teacher walked in. Ki-Hoon's expression stiffened, mostly out of irritation that the conversation had been cut short, but he dutifully put away the lunch box and gave his attention to the beginning of the class. He would talk to her after school, when surely nothing could disrupt their conversation.

* * *

He sat waiting for Nari to appear at the front gate from the back seat, alone; his driver had left to make a call or the like. Luckily, he didn't have any extra-curriculars for the day, or he'd have had to skip it so he could finally talk to Nari. Maybe it was a little ridiculous that he couldn't talk to her properly despite sitting right beside her, but the conversation he wanted to have felt too personal to be having it right then in a public space like the classroom.

As her familiar figure finally made its entrance, he opened the door, wanting to greet her. But then he paused. Wouldn't it be embarrassing to yell for her or wave like an idiot? If he didn't, would she still notice him? What if she just walked right past? She was getting closer... and then further. She really was going to miss him. In a moment of panic, he called out to her: "Oi."

Fuck. That was a type of greeting he only used with his friends, and honestly a little rude. But she was his friend anyway, right? So, it was fine? He clicked his tongue, annoyed at himself, but continued to speak to her when he realized he'd successfully caught her attention, trying to keep his tone unaffected as he said, "Get in the car."

Nari wasn't sure if Kiki got quieter than he already was back when they were kids, or he was just overwhelmed by how much she talked, wasn't he supposed to remember that she was the one that did most of the talking when they were kids? Maybe in her time in the countryside, she had gotten some kind of accent, and he couldn't understand her. She thought that her voice sounded the same, but for him, it would be difficult to understand should she speak slower? That would help him to understand, or maybe he just was too struck with her cooking skills and didn't want to say it out loud, he was for sure still the shy kid that didn't know what to say.

Was she pressuring him too much? It has been a couple of years since they saw each other, what if he didn't want to be her friend again? And those girls were right and he was just being nice, to him just for pity, no, that couldn't be true, Kiki was a nice person he wouldn't do anything to hurt her just like she wouldn't do anything to hurt him, that's what best friends did, they were there for each other when they were most needed it.

But why he wasn't saying anything, sure her idea of making lunch for both of them could have been a little bit straightforward, but she just thought that would make him happy, oh no, what if Kiki had a girlfriend? And that was the reason he was saying that much because people might misunderstand their relationship. She regretted she was kind of, slowly realizing that kind of stuff, of course, Kiki would have a girlfriend he was well Kiki, a girl would like him, Da-Young was an example for sure, she was curious to know, but maybe she should let him reply first to her.

Unfortunately, their conversation was cut short as class started, Nari was a little disappointed. But now that they were classmates, that would only mean they would have other chances to speak, besides they were deskmates so he wouldn't be far away from her, not anymore.

Finally, her first day was done, sure it had been a little bit more hectic than she expected, with her seeing again Kiki and those not nice classmates, but she was sure that tomorrow would be a better day, either way, she had Kiki on her side. As she made her way out of the building, she noticed how everyone, was picked up by their drivers. So that was a reality of school where most of the kids were rich. Which, was the total opposite of Nari's situation, that needed to walk to the front gate and then go to the bus stop.

She was making her way out of the school as she heard a voice "Oi." she turned a little bit surprised not knowing if that voice was talking to her, and that's when she saw Kiki and he was talking to her telling her to get in the, she was struck at the choice of words that he used, did he just really went full male lead of a drama? When he just talked to her like that, what had happened to the shy Kiki that you couldn't even hear his voice when he talked? Maybe she just needed to stop watching so many romance dramas and stop thinking that her life was one of them.

Nari walked towards the car with a smile and got inside. The inside of the car was as luxurious as the outside, so he had this kind of privilege. "Thank you, Kiki! I didn't want to walk to the bus stop, is so far away, but are you sure this is okay? I don't want your girlfriend to misunderstand and get angry, I realized that was probably the reason you didn't say anything about me making lunch for both, you are nice, and sure you got cuter than you already were when we were kids, but don't get me wrong, I'm not interested in you that way I just want us to be friends again"

Ki-Hoon had words he planned to say, questions he was dying to demand answers to, all laid out in his head. And with a couple of sentences from Nari, they were all washed away like words scratched into a shoreline. Was this just a habit she'd developed over the years or something? A superpower to disrupt other people's logical trains of thought, maybe? He stared at her, repeating what she'd just said mentally to make sure he'd understood correctly. At least, he intended for it to be only mental.

"My girlfriend?" He muttered to himself. Since when did he have such a thing? He'd only just recently broken up with the last one; if he was seeing another girl already, wouldn't that make him a terrible person? Anyway, that wasn't the point. The point was that Nari seemed to have conjectured a grave misunderstanding somehow over the past few hours. A misunderstanding that his subconscious insisted he had to clear now, completely.

"Sure, you got cuter than you already were when we were kids," Nari continued to ramble, unaware of the short-circuiting of Ki-Hoon's brain. What kind of cute? He wanted to ask. Cute like a cat? Or cute as in attractive? Wait. Did that really matter? Maybe it did. But obviously it was as a guy, right? Even he himself thought so. Was that narcissistic? Ah, he was supposed to be telling her that he didn't have a girlfriend.

"...but don't get me wrong, I'm not interested in you that way. I just want us to be friends again," Nari concluded, an earnest expression on her face that seemed to insist on the integrity of her statement. Ki-Hoon's slightly parted lips pressed tightly shut. What? Not interested? Right. Of course. She barely even knew the current him. He didn't expect her to be interested. This was true vice versa, too, anyway... right? But then, what was up with that pang of disappointment that pricked his heart?

"I don't have a girlfriend," He spat out the first sentence that was on the tip of his tongue, not knowing what to make of the rest of her words. "Which idiot said I did, anyway?" He tagged on, feeling oddly sullen about this whole situation โ€” enough so that he might have continued grumbling about it for a while longer if it weren't for the chauffeur making his late return. The older man's eyes flickered to Nari and glinted with something like understanding, but quickly moved away as he started the car. Ki-Hoon cleared his throat lightly, sitting upright as the vehicle began to move.

"Whatever, that's not important," he muttered, unwilling to continue their previous thread of conversation in the presence of the driver. "When did you move back?" He asked instead, finally getting out the first of the many questions that had struck him along with the sight of her that morning. How's your family? He wanted to add on but stopped himself in time; even he realized that would be insensitive... all things considered. A silent beat passed, during which another important question popped up in his head that he blurted out without waiting for her answer: "Also, where do you live now? I'll just take you there."

He hadn't even really considered that he should ask for her permission to take her home. This was Nari, after all, who had gone back home in his car hundreds of times before this.

Imagining Kiki with a girlfriend was kind of crazy, maybe because the last time she saw him they were just kids and he was such a shy and awkward kid that needed to be protected, or maybe it was the fact that since Nari haven't been in a relationship yet, it was the same for him, but people changed, right? He seemed more confident and acting like the cool and cold guy wasn't like the weakness of every girl? Because that was mostly the personality of every male lead in every drama she saw who always ended up getting the girl. Instead of the nice and kindhearted second lead that Nari always preferred.

And while she thought that Kiki got cuter as he grew up, he wasn't really her type, probably because she saw him as a kid and he wasn't cool at all back then so she couldn't see him another way rather than being her crybaby best friend that she needed to protect, that's why she felt she needed to clarify the situation of them only being friends.

Nari sensed the slight annoyance in Kiki's words when he admitted he didn't have a girlfriend and he wanted to know who said that maybe Nari did some assumptions, on her own based on what she saw today, maybe she would stop that habit of making assumptions without having the full evidence and after hearing kiki demanding who was the idiot that said that. She was sure it wasn't a good idea to admit that she was the one that thought that "Oh... I... I heard some girls in the bathroom talking about that... I'm not sure if they said Choi Ki-Hoon or Cho Ki-Moon, maybe I didn't hear properly, so don't mind me a lot." She said trying to seem believable, she was just hoping that there wasn't a Cho Ki-Moon or if there was one at school, Kiki wouldn't know about him.

Hopefully, Kiki didn't drag the story more it seemed he wasn't interested in gossip about him. She got a little bit surprised when he asked her about when he moved back, she wasn't expecting he would be that interested in knowing her whereabouts. "Just a couple of weeks ago, my mom wanted to move before the school started, so both could get used to being back in Seoul and not being stressed about it. It was kind of boring since I didn't know anyone after we move to the city." She replied Nari felt a little bit weird talking with Kiki about only her mother and her when he knew where her father was.

Out of nowhere, Kiki said he would take her home she thought that was really nice of him, that way she shouldn't take the bus, but she wasn't sure if she really wanted to have Kiki see where she lived, it wasn't a terrible place, but it was way smaller than the one she used to live when she was a kid and definitely even smaller than the place where Kiki lived, besides that it was far from the school what would he think when he saw it? He wouldn't judge her, it was Kiki after all so she shouldn't be worried, right?

"You don't really have to take me home is far from school andI'm sure is the opposite way from where you are supposed to go." She said, but for some reason, she knew that Kiki wouldn't accept a not as an answer, so she gave him her address, knowing perfectly that it wasn't the luxurious zone where he lived. As the driver made her way towards her house, she wasn't sure what to say, the girlfriend route was canceled, since it seemed he didn't have one. "Rak seems like a nice guy, how long have you two being friends? I think it would be nice to befriend him." She said trying to start some conversation. The drive wasn't as long as she expected, but it was because she didn't have to take public transport to arrive, once the car stopped in front of the old building Nari felt apprehensive of him seeing her living situation, sure it wasn't bad, but it could come as a shock to someone like him.

"This is where I live, thank you for bringing me home! I guess I should leave now so you are not late. I'll see you tomorrow at school"

CHOI KI-HOON

location: seoul academy, main gate

mood: you have too many friends

outfit: school uniform (without jacket)

interactions: Nari | Rak

"You don't really have to take me home is far from school and I'm sure it's the opposite way from where you are supposed to go," Nari muttered, a response Ki-Hoon took it upon himself to ignore. When people gave that sort of response to his offers of favor, most of the time, they were only saying it to be polite. In the end, they still expected him to help. Usually, that got on his nerves, but with Nari toward whom his offer had been genuine and willingly given, it wasn't much of a problem.

The only thing he did notice was that the neighbourhood she mentioned in her address wasn't one he knew. She used to live fairly close to his estate, but clearly not anymore. He should have expected it, he supposed, with her father's... situation, and all. As the car whizzed past lines of viridescent trees in the sudden silence, his companion's fidgeting seemed to grow increasingly pronounced. Ki-Hoon shifted slightly in his seat, feeling awkward. He wanted to ask her about life, about where she'd been. But acting like they were still friends felt abruptly forbidden at the reminder of what had happened between their families all those years ago. A small frown invaded his features. Was he allowed to ask her how she'd been doing when his parents would clearly be to blame for any decline her life had taken?

"Rak seems like a nice guy, how long have you two being friends? I think it would be nice to befriend him," Nari suddenly commented, breaking their silence and drawing Ki-Hoon back from the dive his thoughts were taking. He blinked. Rak? How was she already on nickname-basis with that guy? They'd barely interacted, though? Then again, it was just like Nari, with her spontaneous friendship-forging habits. The opposite of him, of course. And maybe it was because he always made so few real friends that her return felt like such a big deal for him... but, conversely, probably not so important an event for her.

"About four years, I think," he answered Nari's question, cutting off his own brain, "he is a good guy. A great friend, too. But..." Would it be weird to tell her that Rak was a terrible boyfriend at this point? He didn't really mean anything by it. At this point, it was basically just a widely accepted fact in the senior batch of Seoul Academy, so he figured Nari should know. But would him telling her that be odd? "...Just, yeah, he's a good friend," he finally settled on concluding, emphasizing the last word a little too much.

Just as his sentence came to a close, the car also arrived at its destination. Ki-Hoon glanced out of the tinted window and saw... well, not what he expected to see. He knew his own house wasn't normal by a reach, of course, but this wasn't even like Nari's old house at all. It looked cramped, to say the least. It wasn't awful like some places he'd seen in shows but, still, the sight gave him pause.

And then he remembered why her family moved away in the first place. Right. He suppressed the frown that was about to deepen, forcing his face to stay neutral. "This is where I live, thank you for bringing me home! I guess I should leave now so you are not late. I'll see you tomorrow at school," Nari greeted, stepping out as she did. Hopefully, that meant she hadn't noticed his slip in expression.

"Yeah, sure," he returned nonchalantly, turning away from the street as the door closed, only to turn back and watch her back disappear into the shadow of a building. See you tomorrow. How long had it been since he'd last heard that from her? It put him in a weirdly melancholic mood. A random wondering popped up in his mind again: How much would a proper house cost?

Just as his car was about to turn the corner, carrying his irrelevant ponderings away with it, Nari's voice calling out suddenly pierced his ears, causing his head to whip back around. The back of a guy was all he could see, shielding most of his friend's figure from his sight. A neighbour? He couldn't observe more than that, unfortunately, as their silhouettes quickly faded away. Didn't she say it was only her second week back? She really had too many friends. Who was that?

__________________

"Your childhood friend is something else, huh?" Those were Rak's opening words to him the next morning. Despite his accusing words, the tone of the boy's voice sounded amused. Excited, even. Still stuck in a half-asleep, unreasonably-annoyed mood, Ki-Hoon stared up at him, demanding an explanation with nothing but the power of his glare. Rak slipped into the seat beside his, Nari's seat โ€” which was still empty, for some reason, leaning in as if he were about to share a big secret.

"I saw her walking in with Haneul this morning," Rak whispered, taking way too much joy out of his own words like the gossip he was, "they seemed close. Like, really close." What the hell? Ki-Hoon watched as his friend leaned back into the seat, taking a sip of that disgusting packet milo, looking finally relaxed after having shared this apparent headline. Pyo Haneul? Even Ki-Hoon knew who that was, and he barely knew anyone outside his own class by face let alone name. The question was how Nari knew him. He'd thought she might need someone to show her around but, now, what? She already knew, like, half of Seoul, apparently?

Just as he finished absorbing the news, physical evidence popped up in the form of the above-mentioned duo standing outside the door. Indeed, they looked friendly. It was like she didn't know how to have guards up at all. Irritation built up slightly in his heart at the sight of their laughter and Ki-Hoon sought after something to blame it on. His gaze wandered for a bit, before landing on Rak's now emptied milo packet that was sitting on Nari's table.

Snatching it, he stood up, walking toward the trash bin at the door of the classroom, where Nari and Haneul just so happened to be standing. He threw the packet in with a little more force than needed, and the sound of it tumbling into the bin made Haneul look up. Their gazes met, and the other boy broke into a greeting smile that was way too fresh for this early in the morning. Normally, he'd have at least nodded back in acknowledgement. But today was different. Why? He didn't know and he didn't care.

"Hey, hurry up and get in," he snapped instead, tapping the target of his words on the shoulder as he did. Before Nari could even respond, he tagged on a curt, "the teacher's coming, don't be a nuisance."

As the driver made his way to Nari's house, she wondered what would he think, sure her house as a child was never as luxurious or big as Kiki's but it was nicer than the small and cramped house where she lived now. Living in Seoul was more expensive than living in the countryside and they were not used to pay something so expensive especially when the work of Nari's mom didn't pay as much as what her father earned when he used to work for the company of Kiki's parents. But even if it was the nice house she used to live in when she was a child, she was happy to be back and it wasn't bad it was cozier after all.

When Kiki told her, he had been friends with Rak for about four years it made her happy. She was glad that he was able to find a good friend while she was away, and now it was a matter of time to befriend him since every friend of Kiki was also her friend, she noticed the small hesitance when he was talking about his friend, maybe it was just the awkwardness to talk about your best friend.

Once they arrived at her house she said goodbye and to him that she would see him tomorrow, that time she would keep her word and she wouldn't disappear without saying goodbye, now nothing would be able to keep them apart. Nari waved as the car was leaving, she was sure that Kiki wouldn't notice, but still, she wanted to say goodbye to him as if it was the last time, just as she was going to go to her house a familiar face showed, one that welcomed her when she arrived and that was becoming a good friend fast, she called him out happily excited to tell him about her first day, she was sure Haneul and Kiki could become friends, that was it she was going to introduce them so all of them could become friends.

Just as they agreed yesterday, Haneul and Nari arrived together to keep each other's company, she thought it was really kind to of him to walked with her as they made their way to their high school and it was always nice to have someone to talk to to during the morning. When they arrived she noticed some people staring at them, did she had something on her face? was her uniform dirty or something? She took a glance at Haneul and he also seemed normal so she couldn't understand why the rest of the students were interest in them.

As they walked through the hallways it didn't take long until they arrived at her classroom, would Kiki be there already? She hoped he wasn't running late. "So, which one is your class? Yesterday I didn't see you at all" Haneul asked Nari as they stopped outside of the door "This is my classroom! I'm still sad we couldn't be able to classmates I'm sure it would have been fun, but is not that bad my classmates are nice" she said happily ignoring what happened with Da-Young, but Haneul shouldn't know that or he would get worried.

Maybe she was too focused on her conversation with Haneul that when the sound of someone throwing something on the trash can made her jump a little bit from the surprise. When she turned and see who it was she was faced with not other than Kiki when she saw him she was sure it was the perfect opportunity to introduce him to Haneul. "Good..." she started saying but her words were interrupted when he told her to hurry up and tapped her shoulder, this took Nari by surprise, she didn't remember Kiki being this aggressive without having time to say anything he added how she was a nuisance, this was really not the Kiki she knew.

"Her name is Nari, not nuisance and she wasn't doing anything wrong we were just talking so not need to get overexcited for it you should apologize to her." Haneul said in a stern but calm voice "You are mistaking him Haneul, he is not being mean to me, he is my friend Kik... Ki-Hoon he is probably tired, so he didn't really mean what he said" She said trying to keep things at peace, it seemed it worked at least for that moment "Let me know if someone bothers you I'll try my best to help you and have them stop bothering you." He said with a smile "I guess I should get going, I don't want to get you in trouble I'll see you later, and let's have lunch together" he added which Nari replied with a nod and a smile.

As she saw him leave Nari turned to Kiki "Why did you act that way? I was just talking with my friend and the teacher isn't coming yet. We were not causing any trouble"

Nari couldn't understand why Kiki acted that way, did he woke up in a cranky mood? "What's up with your mood today? You would have never said something like that before, we were just talking, and Haneulis a really nice guy, if you get to know him, he is my friend just like you are mine too, so why are you so salty about it. Did you don't have breakfast or did you fell from your bed" she said as she took her seat next to kiki's seat.

The classes went by until it was time for their P.E class, everyone was talking about how they were going to be sharing it with another class, Nari wondered if it would be Haneul's class, she thought it would be nice to spend some time with him and maybe Kiki would be in a better mood and she could finally introduce each other. "Kik- Ki-hoon, Let's go! Come on P.E would be fun it's nice to exercise sometimes and you look like you need to get some energy, you are looking like you just want to sleep, time to release those endorphins!" she said trying to cheer up the guy who seemed he wanted to be somewhere else rather than going to their P.E class.

Nari knew that they would be late if it depended on Kiki walking towards the gym, she was sure the guy would walk at the speed of a snail if that meant he wouldn't have to go, so as the impatient person that she was, she held kiki's hand and dragged him to the gym "You weren't this slow when we were kids" she said to him, once they arrived at the gym, most of the students were already there between those new faces, she encountered a familiar face "Haneul!" the girl said out loud as she waved towards the guy as he replied with the same motion "Let's go with Haneul!"

"Her name is Nari, not nuisance," Haneul spoke up before his friend could respond, "and she wasn't doing anything wrong, we were just talking so no need to get overexcited for it." Ki-Hoon's gaze flicked up, eyes meeting the other boy's in what might have looked like a glare-off to others but was really just him forgetting to blink thanks to his surprise. He gave Haneul's figure another glance-over. Why was this guy getting so defensive? "You should apologize to her," the boy finished, and Ki-Hoon's lips curled in annoyance. Apologize? Him? Why should he? He was just talking to his own classmate.

His frown and mysterious annoyance only deepened when Nari spoke up to explain things for him, as if he really was the one in the wrong. With a slight sneer, he tuned out of their following exchange, not wanting to ruin his own mood even further, and walked back toward his table, sure that Nari would be right behind. And she was, along with words he didn't want to hear. Why did you act that way? She demanded. He wished she wouldn't. He didn't have an answer. I was just talking with my friend and the teacher isn't coming yet. We were not causing any trouble. Well, he was troubled. That had been bad enough in his book. But saying that would just make him sound like a moron, so he wouldn't.

"You were blocking the door," he argued weakly before tagging on a firmer, "whatever, it doesn't matter, just get to your seat. The teacher's coming." Unfortunately for him, his attempt to silence her failed and she continued questioning him. What's up with your mood today? She asked, either not noticing or not caring that he didn't want to answer. Unlike her assumptions, there was actually nothing technically wrong with his morning today. Not until she'd showed up, and then it'd soured pretty quickly from that moment. Ki-Hoon frowned and tore his eyes away from her, forcing himself to tune her out as another mundane round of lessons began.

He didn't dislike exercising. In fact, he kind of enjoyed it... when he was in the mood for it. Unfortunately, the mood rarely came in the middle of the school day, after hours of sitting around listening to sleep-inducing talk about chemistry. Which means; PE classes? He had no love for them. Not even a shred of enthusiasm. Especially not when the item on the menu was dodgeball, which was really just about as mindless a sport as they came. Clearly, not everyone agreed with him on this.

"Let's go! Come on," Nari urged, her tone reminiscent of a cheerleader trying to hype up their audience, "PE would be fun, it's nice to exercise sometimes and you look like you need to get some energy. You are looking like you just want to sleep, time to release those endorphins!" He did not want to sleep; this was his sulking expression. But he wasn't going to tell her that. Ki-Hoon sighed internally as he trudged on behind her, hands starting to habitually slip into his pockets โ€” until an unexpected warmth interrupted him.

It oddly didn't feel foreign. That is, her hand on his. He almost didn't pay attention to it, preoccupied with rolling his eyes to her comment on his speed and his brisk-est walk of the week, perhaps month. It was only when they arrived at their destination that he realized they had been holding hands. Why? Because she let go. "Haneul!" Nari called out, loud enough for more gazes to be pulled to the boy in question than there already was.

As he watched the girl flit away to her new friend, leaving him like a bee leaves one flower for the next, Ki-Hoon barely stopped himself from trudging along behind her. He wasn't even friends with that guy, so why should he follow her? He shouldn't. Right? A moment passed with him awkwardly standing in the middle of the gym, staring after Nari's back, before his salvation finally arrived in the form of a hit to the back of his head.

"What're you doing?" Rak questioned, "hurry up, we're forming teams."

And so, twenty minutes later, he's ended up here. The rubber ball in his hand was slippery. Was it his sweat or some other soul's? Nobody knows. The green cloth hanging off his target, signalling that they were enemies, was as bright a neon as colours got. But his eyes were focused on the boy's face. An annoyingly good-looking face. Pyo Haneul. The last one left standing from the boys of class 3-B. The cheers of his own classmates were louder than probably warranted for a PE lesson. Ki-Hoon felt a ridiculously powerful need to win this game of dodgeball. Even if he had to do it with this moist ball.

He aims. He throws. The last of the ball leaves his fingertips and whizzes through the air. One second later, a thump, the sound of fast rubber against someone's face. Ki-Hoon blinked. Haneul, too, seemed confused โ€” he was, unfortunately, just fine. The noise in the gym switches to a different sort of buzz as people start migrating towards where the ball landed. As Haneul's body turned, moving out of his line of sight, he finally got a glimpse of what havoc he'd wreaked.

His legs moved faster than his mind at that moment, already heading forward when he was in the middle of cursing himself out in his head. There, Nari sat on the ground, hand to her face. Of all the possible outcomes he had imagined of that throw, this wasn't one of them. Are you okay? Does it hurt a lot? Do you need to go to the infirmary? All the questions he wanted to ask tangled up with each other until not a single one managed to leave his mouth. And they, apparently, didn't need to.

"Are you okay? Does it hurt a lot?" Haneul asked, voice laced with concern as he kneeled beside Nari. "Do you need to go to the infirmary?" Ki-Hoon's gaze snapped to the other boy, but he couldn't really bring himself to cut in, instead finding himself taking a step back. That he should apologize flashed through his mind.

"I'm so sorry, I wouldn't have dodged if I knew you were behind me," Haneul spoke again, snatching away the last of Ki-Hoon's possible lines, leaving him half incredulous and otherwise dazed. Wow. Wasn't he completely just the bad guy in this scenario now? Embarrassed, he muttered out an apology, a much briefer, "Sorry".

Trying to make Kiki and Haneul become friends was more difficult than Nari anticipated, maybe it was the fact that they were complete opposites that made them don't want to get along but opposites were supposed to attract, well, at least that's what happened in books and movies, maybe it wasn't that true after all and even less when you were trying to pair two guys to become friends, definitely making friends was more difficult than she remembered, she was sure she didn't have this kind of trouble back then, but she used to live on the countryside and right now she was in a school full of rich kids, two complete opposites of the spectrum.

"You seem the most excited out of everyone here." Haneul said with a small chuckle as he ruffled her hair "I heard that we are going to do dodgeball, I'll make sure that you get chosen on my team I don't want you to be the last pick because you are the new kid. Besides, it would be nice to be together since we are in different classes"

At Haneul's reassurance that he will choose her, Nari just smiled she wondered if she could ask him about also choosing Kiki on his team so that way the three of them could be together and that way both could at least talk to each other in a more friendly way than what happened during the morning. But when she turned to look for her childhood friend, she saw him leaving with Rak, it seemed that they wouldn't be together after all.

And just as she expected she and Kiki ended up on different teams, but even if they were supposed to be rivals, Nari realized that he looked really cool while playing dodgeball and it seemed the rest of the students were thinking the same as they cheered for him. She wasn't sure if he wanted to prove something while trying to hit with the ball one of her team members or he was just too passionate about dodgeball, as the cheering got louder she realized that even if they were still in different teams she would have still cheered for him. But right now she couldn't since she was still part of the game.

It wasn't until there were only a few people still in the game, herself included, that the environment started to become more excited than it already was having Kiki and Haneul still there, was making everyone go crazy, just the presence of the two made everything feel as if it was some kind of action scene, even if it was just a normal PE class, maybe she just felt this way after seeing kiki's intense gaze towards her teammate, she was sure she had never seen him so focused on something maybe he really wanted to win just too boost his ego, which seemed pretty normal for high schoolers especially when you had two classes cheering for the two guys respectively.

What happened after she saw Kiki throw the ball towards Haneul happened incredibly fast and slow at the same time, he threw the ball and she was sure that Haneul wouldn't be able to dodge it, it was almost as if he put all his energy into that throw, but as she saw the fastball coming towards their side, but at that moment everything became slow motion as she saw Haneul moving away and the ball coming towards her, and before she thought on moving, everything became fast again as the ball hit her face if this was a drama this would be the scene where the main lead gets hit on the face and for comedic purposes they would repeat the scene millions of times as they focus on the faces on the rest of the characters and their reactions, but this wasn't a drama, and instead she was pushed to the ground, and the only noise that was heard afterward was the gasp coming out of everyone's mouths.

Everyone started gathering around her maybe because they were worried of just because they were nosy as she had her hand on her face in an attempt to ease her pain, it wasn't until she heard the concerned voice of Haneul that she looked at the guy "I'm fine, don't worry about it. I should have paid more attention, it was my fault" she said trying to reassure both guys that none of them were at fault, how would Haneul know that she was behind him since he didn't have eyes on his back and how would Kiki know also since she was covered by Haneul, as she took her hand out of her face to show that she was okay, but at that moment her nose started to bleed and some of the blood drops fell on her shirt, well, that was really going to leave a stain and her mom wouldn't be too happy while trying to take the stain away.
"I'm taking you to the infirmary." Haneul said more as a statement than a casual saying "Pinch your nose while we get there, everything is going to be fine" he added as he helped Nari to stand up to take her to the infirmary as the both of them were making their way out of the gym, Nari turned too see Kiki, she really wanted to tell him that it wasn''t his fault, just by him saying sorry she knew he was feeling terrible, but it was just an accident, it was obvious that he would be the last person that would want to hurt her, she just wanted to reassure him that he shouldn't feel bad, that it was all her fault for not paying attention to the game, but as much as she wanted to go back to tell him that she would be okay, Haneul was decided on taking her to the infirmary, maybe once her bleeding stopped she could talk to Kiki and even buy him something to eat to cheer him up so he wouldn't feel bad for what happened, even if it was just an accident Nari was blaming herself for ruining everything.
