Alrighty folks, here's the CS/application thread for the RP.

When creating your character, please consider the following:

- Try to keep characters varied, with different skill sets and abilities, and backgrounds (some overlap is fine)

- Characters volunteered for this, and received a lot of training and support throughout the process. The military invested a ton of money and time into your character, so scientists would not have been cruel or abusive (bad apples do exist, but they're not going to get away with making your character's life a living hell). That said, there would have been quite a bit of distrust between Praetors, the public, and ordinary soldiers.

- On a related note, they would have underwent frequent psychological evaluations. Mass murderers and people with a history of violence wouldn't have been accepted into the program. Yes, Praetors are literal killing machines, but they are still held accountable for actions in the field.

- Praetors in their transformed state look like sci-fi monsters, but their personalities remain unchanged.

Scars: During his second escape attempt, Merrit ended up in the same room as another....less friendly experiment. The result wasn't pretty, but the wounds have since healed. In his human form you can see a multitude of claw marks, the majority of which are on his torso and arms. He has a bite mark near the base of his throat.

Cuffs: To prevent him from transforming too far, the scientists have created cuffs to encircle his wrists and ankles. They are made of an unkown, very durable material that is white and reflective in appearance.

Merrit is a fairly relaxed guy. He’s open-minded and enjoys learning about new subjects. Moving around a lot left him with few friends, but a lot of time to read books and research the topics that interested him. Behind the relaxed, carefree attitude is an introspective and intelligent student of science with a love for fiction and philosophy. He’s got some experience working in a lab, along with an excellent understanding of advanced chemistry and basic biology.

Merrit got along with most of his family really well, but that’s not to say they didn’t have their share of issues. Merrit tried to ignore most of it, but there’s an underlying pattern of substance abuse within his family. Having grown up lacking stability, he’s usually really good at maintaining his cool and putting his emotions on the back burner while he figures out what to do. He’s also really good at reading other people; a trait that comes from living with his family and volunteering with a lot of different organizations.

Merrit is less good at actually expressing his emotions and allowing himself to trust others. While he has a genuine love for his friends, he often struggles to ask for help when he needs it and feels guilty for burdening them with personal issues. Merrit tends to have a philosophical approach to dealing with stress, but tries to be more practical when helping others. If you ask a question he can’t immediately answer, he’ll keep looking for it long after you’ve probably forgotten.

Merrit is open-minded and accepts that people are generally flawed, with a mixture of positive and negative traits and that expecting perfection is a recipe for disappointment. He tries to be understanding and patient regarding other people's problems. In addition, he’s supportive of people's hobbies even if it’s not something he particularly enjoys.In a relationship, Merrit is the kind of person to want to help his partner pursue their own goals. He doesn’t like verbal arguments and is usually able to talk things out in a reasonable manner.

Merrit expects people to be flawed, but he sometimes forgets that it can be better to expect the good. He is a very loyal person, but he has difficulties forming close attachments. He has a deep rooted fear of abandonment and tends to expect people to leave at the slightest mistake on his part. As a result, he sometimes gets so caught up in trying to be helpful that he forgets to focus on his own goals. At the same time, he can become so fixated on solving a problem that he forgets to actually listen to his partner when he probably should.

He also gets confused about what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like, which means that he’ll tolerate being hurt more often than he probably should. Sometimes it’s easier to try and wait out the anger than it is to fight back or try and talk things out. If he feels unhappy about how a conflict is going, he’s likely to retreat within himself or go off on his own until he feels like returning. He has a tendency to surpress his anger until it turns into resentment.

DRAGON

Powers:

Dragon Physiology: The experiments have turned Merrit into something strongly resembling the western interpretation of a dragon. He has gained increased strength, vision, hearing, and smell. Due to a connection with the elements of fire and metal, he can see heat and detect minerals/minerals.

Elemental Manipulation: Merrit seems to have been imbued with an affinity for the element of fire and to some degree metals/minerals as well. He’s able to manipulate existing sources of these two elements or create them at the cost of using more energy. Physical contact with fire or very high temperatures has a healing effect, causing him to regenerate faster so long as he maintains contact with the source. Eating metal has the same effect.

Physical Transformation: Merrit can transform partially or fully into a massive, fire breathing dragon. However, he has very poor control over this ability at the moment and is currently stuck somewhere in the middle. It should be noted that energy is only consumed while actively transforming. So for example, while it takes energy to turn his fingers into claws, once transformed they can remain like that indefinitely.

Animal Speak: Merrit can speak to animals, but most of them don’t stick around for long; sensing the dragon beneath his skin, they take an instant disliking to his presence. The few exceptions are usually creatures like birds and reptiles, which seem to feel some sort of kinship instead.

Weaknesses:

Size: Merrit's Praetor form is large and difficult to maneuver in confined spaces without causing unintentional damage. This lack of maneuvability on land makes him vulnerable to groups of smaller enemies.

Merrit hasn’t figured out how to transform yet, so he’s currently stuck with some very draconic features while not realizing he can reverse them. As a result, he doesn’t exactly blend in. In addition, it is possible to prevent him from transforming with physical restraints that would cut into his flesh as he transforms or by placing him underground where he cannot possibly break through. His wings are the most vulnerable part of his body, which if sufficiently damaged would prevent him from flying.

As his powers grow, Merrit finds himself gaining more draconic personality traits. He’s less able to resist the temptation of shiny objects, is distracted by flattery, and feels an uncharacteristic possessiveness over physical items.

While Merrit is mostly unaffected by the cold thanks to his newfound affinity to fire, if he’s already injured then it will slow down the healing process.

The vast majority of animals DO NOT like him. Depending on the species, they may feel threatened enough by his mere presence to sound the alarm or attack him on sight. On the other hand, the remaining animals like him a little too much. It seems like every bird, snake, and lizard is under the impression that he’s somehow responsible for solving all their problems.

history

Merrit was born in Toronto, but he’s lived most of his life being shuffled from one place to another. At the time of his kidnapping, he was living in a university town where he was going to school in order to study agriculture; not exactly the kind of career where one expects to be dragged off into a rusty van and wake up as a weapon of mass destruction.

Merrit’s not entirely sure what’s going on, but he knows he wants out. Like right now thank you very much. He’s tried to escape twice so far, but since the last attempt failed he’s been acting the part of a model test subject. He figures that if he acts cooperative for long enough, there’s a better chance they’ll let their guard down eventually.

As an officer of the law and later a private investigator, Verity has always desired to protect the innocent. This trait has not diminished despite the experiments, but her trust in others has. Verity doesn’t trust that the existing authorities will help them, but she still seeks justice. She wants a better world, but now sees that if you want change, you have to push for it on your own terms. Once out, Verity plans to reveal the dark truth of the Balam Sanctuary and get revenge on every twisted and corrupt individual responsible for the experiments.

In the meantime, Verity is focused on survival and determined that no matter what, she will escape this hell. Her strength stems largely from spite. This is a trait that has followed her throughout life, but which became stronger as a result of the two major betrayals that brought Verity to the Balam Sanctuary to begin with. Her desire to survive has given her the resolve to do what’s necessary in the moment, but combined with her natural cunning threatens to become a cruel streak.

Verity views the other experiments as kindred spirits. They might occasionally clash amongst themselves, but that doesn’t change her willingness to jump to their defense in the face of danger. When they aren't in life-threatening danger, one can sometimes catch glimpses of the hopeful young officer that would climb a tree to rescue a lost kite and spend her breaks looking through forgotten files. Restless, but well intentioned. She loves card games, brain teasers, and friendly debates.

Fears:

Verity is afraid of rats and fire, but her biggest fear is being silenced. She’s determined to be a true reporter who doesn’t stop pursuing the truth for any reason. In the same vein, she’s terrified of losing her own identity; only time will tell whether it’s the job or experiments that corrupt her first. Speaking of which…

Virtue: Diligence

Verity is an extremely resourceful and adaptive person. She has a knack for reading people and her environment, with an excellent memory for detail. As a former cop and investigator, Verity is devoted to protecting others as well as making sure that justice is served. However, she is willing to bend the rules if that would better help those in need.

Varity has a strong sense of justice, but often forgets that some truths are better left buried. She has a tendency to poke her nose where it doesn't belong and can be inconsiderate when revealing sensitive information. In addition, she's willing to ignore rules, barriers, and warnings if she thinks that will get her the evidence she's looking for. Verity is the most dangerous when she feels like the only person working to solve a time-sensitive problem. She's distrusting by default, but can easily fall into downright aloof behavior if she feels that her concerns are being ignored. This kind of behavior got her kicked out of her division, because she was willing to go behind her partner's back in order to chase leads that were out of their jurisdiction.

Purpose of Creation: Verity was created to be an infiltration operative; as Leviathan, she specialized in sabotaging enemy equipment and immobilizing targets for capture.

Locomotion: Leviathan is a small Praetor with light armor, designed with a focus on flexibility and speed. Her fighting style uses a combination of ambush tactics, redirection, and opportunistically dishing out critical hits. Using her environment to her advantage, she can leap over, climb, and hang upside down from nearly anything.

The Shroud: Leviathan has been modified with the ability to dissappear into her environment, so long as she moves very slowly.

Assimilation: Verity can feed her powers by absorbing organic material, including the flesh of living beings. She can use this extra mass to patch up her own wounds or reserve it for later. However, 'consuming' other living organisms provides the benefit of gaining access to their DNA and memories. The former, allows her to improve her transformation abilities, while enough practice with the latter will open up new ways to manipulate the minds of others. Limitations: Ability to restrain individual, mental strength of target, level of experience, time.

Regeneration: Verity can alter her body on a molecular level, allowing her to rapidly regenerate from wounds. However, bullets, broken glass, or any inorganic material that remains inside her body must first be removed or it will become trapped. This can continue to cause internal damage such as bleeding, or quickly cause infections which can lead to life threatening sepsis. Limitations: Energy consumption, ability to remove cause of injury, sedatives.

history

Prior to becoming an experiment, Verity was a cop-turned-private-investigator. She’d taken a personal interest in some local disappearances that seemed to be linked with a couple of the investigations she’d undertaken during her brief time as an officer. However, getting involved clearly must have stepped on someone’s toes, because after ignoring the second warning her vehicle was hit driving home at night. A lot of pain, some foggy memories of seeing her parents at the hospital, and suddenly she was woke up to find herself the patient of a different kind of doctor.

Prior to becoming an experiment, Verity was part of the civilian security force that helped defend her city's wall. The year was 2132, the year of the first lockdowns that forced a divide between those in the cities and those outside the walls.

Abilities

As all Praetors can, Altaira is capable of shifting almost instantaneously into her modified form. Her shifted form retains a few distinctly human features, along with a relatively humanoid bodily structure. She is classified as a small Praetor with a primary focus on aerial speed, maneuverability, flexibility, and accelerated reflexes. She was designed to dominate airspace by dodging enemy fire, outmaneuvering chasing aircrafts, and dispatching enemy pilots. Her feet and raptorial talons are the largest part of her body and are capable of breaching tough surfaces, especially when amplified by the force of an impact. Her specially designed wings allow her to silently approach unsuspecting targets. Her technologically modified muscles are capable of strength unnatural to her relatively small size.

Elemental/Special Attack Mod: Within Harpy's mouth are glads capable of producing a concoction of mutated digestive enzymes. When biting something, Harpy is able to release those enzymes which will then travel onto her victim and begin digesting their flesh. The enzymes die within a minute of leaving Harpy's mouth but are capable of damaging both external and internal flesh.
Visual Mod: A modified form of night vision. Vision in low light areas is just as good as brightly lit areas, and total darkness becomes more of an extremely low light area. Details are hard to make out, but shapes and movements are noticeable.
Stealth Mod: Unique wing and feather features enable reduced locomotion/flight-based sound.

Non-transformed

Due to her mediterranian lineage, Altaira has a radiant olive colored complexion with corol blushed cheeks, nose and eyelids. Her facial structure is moderately thin and long, with a prominent chin. She has an aquiline nose shape, with a more prominent bridge and subtle hook. Her eyes are big and amber colored with a natural gradient that darkens towards the pupil. Her lips are full and stained the shade of burnt umber. Her teeth are only slightly different than that of a normal human, with slightly wider and sharper canines. Her hair is wavy and brown. During the start of her deployment she had chopped her hair up to her ears. Throughout the rest of her deployment and the time before being placed into stasis, it had grown to just above her mid back. She has a relatively small stature but a robust physique.

Transformed

Once transformed, Atlaira (or Harpy), adopts several avian-specific structures. Brown speckled plumage sprouts from her head, forming a horned crown of sorts. This dark plumage continues down her forehead and ends just above her eyes, forming a peak centered with the bridge of her nose. Plummage sprouts from all sides of her face, growing away from the center of her face and covering her ears. Her amber eyes drain into a foggy silver color. Brown speckles, very similar to freckles, decorate the top half of her face. A sharp keratin tip extends about an inch out of her nose. Her lips remain their rich brown color, but the dental formations within her maul change drastically. Her teeth, inscisors, molars and all, are replaced by jagged, uneven bone meant to pierce and rip. The increased size and capacity of teeth causes her bottom jaw to sit a bit lower.

Her arms bend, shift and grow into fully feathered wings. Three thin, black, taloned finger-like structures emerge from the bend of the wing. Her other two fingers have merged into the rest of her wings and serve as vestigial structures. Her fully extended wingspan reaches 15 feet across. A sparse trickle of feathers down the back and sides of her neck lead to the fully transitioned area that begins at her shoulder. Similar to the feathers sprouting from the crown of her head, the feathers of her wings are a mixture of shades. No one feather is fully one color. Spackles of black, brown ombre, and light brown flakes are all common patterns that can be found amongst her plumage. The feathering stops at her chest. The same pattern of brown speckles found upon the top section of her face decorates her chest. Feather growth begins again below the breasts and continues down the abdomen and back. The structure of her legs changes just as dramatically as her arms. Similar to a bird, her shortened tibia juts out behind her knee, forming what most would refer to as another, backward knee or ankle. Her tarsus has elongated greatly and leads to a large raptorial foot. The flesh of her legs is thick and tough with the previous feather pattern ending about halfway down. Black, armored scales finish down the leg and foot. Her feet contain three forward-facing digits and one backward-facing hallux. Each toe bears a large, black, curved talon. The talon of the hallux is longer than the others.

Partial Transformation

The medium between both forms is uncomfortable for Altaira to maintain. Her normal umber lips remain, as this feature is shared bewteen both form. Her eyes become silvery and plummage decorates her abdomen, back, arms and half of her legs. Her nails grow and darken into a black color.

Since her enrollment, Altaira's only outfits were removable gowns for testing, and military garmants. Specific armor was created to fit her Harpy form when she was deployed, such as metal talon extenders and light weight body plates. Once awakened and settled, it can be assumed that she would attempt to dress inconspicuously.

Personality

Altaira is an insightful individual. Her keen eyes and natural skepticism keep her ever-so observant and exhaustingly stressed. She is a steadfast and reliable companion, a surly and charmless stranger, and a cruel, vindictive enemy. She is sentimental in the way of keeping and treasuring any and all gifts, no matter how small or ordinary. She is strategic and quick, two aspects that were vital to her survival in battle.
Altaira once had an unwavering moral compass that guided her through the experiences of life. She wanted a progressive world where equality and social liberty were promised. She believed in a greener world, where animals were respected and the planet was protected, not destroyed. This morality was what initially led to her enrollment into the Praetor operation. She wanted to help her community defend itself from outside influences of greed and corruption. She believed that causatively, it would lead to greed and corruption within her nation to be stomped out as well. However, after her time fighting, her alignments aren't as clearly defined as they once were. She had done questionable things on the battlefield, been given questionable orders that she followed obediently. Some of her actions she would have once detested profusely.
Socially, Altairia is like an open book with a few chapters ripped out. With her companions, she willingly shares small tidbits of herself and indulges in friendly chatter. However, she keeps her deeper feelings and thoughts within herself. She has a wildly imaginative and artistic mind that she keeps mostly private, although she has recited a few stories to her peers during hard times.
War has made her less than patriotic. If anything, it showed her how naive she was to believe that her nation and the people within it cared for anything but themselves. She grew into a cynical, impatient individual. She enjoys the company of other Praetors far more than humans.

early life

Altaira was the second born child of a family of Greek immigrants. Her parents worked in a small restaurant in the Astoria borough in Queens and lived in an apartment above it. There was a large population of greek individuals in the neighborhood, providing the Laskaris family with a tightly knit community to raise their children in. Altaira spent a lot of time helping out, either at her parent's diner or with family friends. She learned the satisfaction of making someone else smile, and these memories became anchored within her, shaping her sense of morality.

She attended many local celebrations, from dancing and playing during Apokries, or Carnival, to salivating after a single sniff of the meaty air during Tsiknopempti, or Fat Thursday. Altaira had a joyful childhood, with a caring family and community. With expanded city development, Astoria reduced. Small businesses were bought out and replaced with apartments and rent increased at a steep incline. Altaira began to witness the toll financial stress could have on a family as her parents struggled to pay their bills. Her lifelong community was chipped away as more neighborhood friends were forced to find more affordable living elsewhere. In order to alleviate his family's financial burden, Altaira's brother who was eleven years her senior refused higher education and went straight into the workforce when he came of age.
Altaira spent her teenagehood volunteering and involving herself in community outreach programs. She dual-enrolled with a local community college while in high school, majoring in Anthropology. When it came time, she graduated her senior year with both her high school diploma and her AA degree.

later life

Sometime during her schooling (elementary-high school), tensions between world powers became severe and war was declared. Altaira feared for her family, her community and her country as the toll of war became evident within the country. Altaira enlisted with her local military recruiter and went off to boot camp shortly after. While the training itself was grueling and emotionally taxing, Altaira formed close bonds with her fellow recruits.

At the end of her training, Altaira was offered an opportunity to enroll in a highly selective program that had already shown progress in giving the nation an upper hand. A new method had been created, and they needed volunteers to begin creating what they called "Praetors". Altaira agreed, thinking the program was the best way possible to help protect her community.
Altaira met several other candidates that were to receive the latest generation of Praetor technology. They all stayed together during the primary assessment, which included a lot of testing. Many candidates were eliminated from the program during this period. Altaira assumed they just didn't make the cut. The program was selective after all. After the testing, only a handful of candidates remained. Altaira hardly had enough time to regroup with the remaining candidates before they were all separated. The modification process began the same day.
Altaira was asleep for most of the incubation process. The few times she awakened were brief seconds filled with intense discomfort. When her incubation process ended and she finally awoke, it seemed like Altaira was a baby, perceiving the world for the first time with entirely new senses. Independent testing allowed Altaira to explore her new body and its capabilities. The most memorable activity was her first flight test. The realization that she had evolved from a ground-based creature to an entity whose abilities triple when airborne was an enthralling experience.
She received a few tweaks, mostly adjustments to her wing size and musculature, before entering group trials. The bunch she had met before were all there, each modified in their own unique way.

even later life

Group training primed Altaira for deployment, but nothing could have fully prepared her her designed combat. Altaira's task was to engage in high-speed battle, dodging pelting storms of gunfire, taking down enemy aircrafts and clearing airspace for ally bombers. To survive, Altaira relied on her quick thinking, reflexes and intuition. A single, unlucky miscalculation had the potential of leading her to a very fast demise.
She dispatched enemy aircraft by severely damaging their exterior, breaking through the cockpit and slicing the pilots, and maneuvering chasing aircraft into dangerous areas. The first two methods often required some momentum behind the attack, although her specially designed claw tips made cutting through metal and polycarbonate easier. To finish the job, Altaira often executed ejecting pilots as they descended.
Occasionally, Altaira would be asked to carry explosive devices with her in order to take down or damage large aircraft or war machines. Her small size and silent flight allowed her to also drop small explosives on unsuspecting groups and war machines. The explosives were stored in a sash around a single leg, and only a few could be carried. She removed them with her unoccupied foot.
Altaira's skills were also utilized in night-based operations. This included the direct attacking of unsuspecting ground troops and raveling with ally night fighter squadrons and attacking enemy facilities and vehicles.
During her time deployed, Altaira found herself questioning her actions and moral compass. She witnessed cruelties inflincted from both sides, and ravenous self interest of her human compatriots.

Important memories:

Altaira spotted a group of soldiers attempting to scramble away from a collapsing building, The top half of the building had already crumbled and was being supported by the second floor ceiling that had managed to remain unscathed. However intact the floor was, it was incapable of supporting so much weight and was seconds from collapsing atop the group. Without a second thought, Altaira sprung into action. She swooped down into the building, her back towards the ceiling and feet stretched upwards. Seconds later, a large solid section of the ceiling gave way. Had she not been there, the soldiers would have been crushed. Instead, the ceiling halted its descent, supported by Altaira's straining legs. She shouted for the soldiers to leave as fast as they could. On their way out, a few murmured their thanks. The others remained silent, sending her hateful glares as they made their was out. Unable to escape herself, Altaira was crushed beneath the building. When she was finally dug out from the rubble, she was carted away to her labratory due to the serious state of her injures. She later found out that half of the squad disliked Praetors.

She spotted soldiers terrorizing innocent civilians as they secured a small town. Some soldiers showed little compassion, and even displayed racially motivated violence against the native inhabitants. She witnessed a resident surrounded by a trio of touchy soldiers. Unable to stand by, Altaira stepped in to defend the resident. Tensions rose and the situation quickly soured. One soldier ended up severly maimed and was later medically discharged. The other two were only slightly injured, and began bad mouthing Altaira to anyone that would listen. She got a good scolding, but with her being a Praetor they couldn’t just

Anti-praetor attitudes within her fellow soldiers began to make Altaira feel ostracized. Her normally social nature found the social rejection paticularly painful. Despite her attempts to defend the residents of the taken encampment, they showed fear and anger towards her, which she fully understood and believed was well deserved.

Despite asking several times, Altaira was never able to leave and go visit her family. She watched as many other were allowed time to visit their family for a short while.

Altaira began to find the extent of damage in which her nation was causing to be over the top. They were bombing irrelevant territories to smithereens, taking out hundreds of innocents along the way.
