Cities

Fortified and protected by massive walls; what remains of the old world is coveted as the last hope to restore the former glory of humanity. City life has changed to become focused on rebuilding and restoring humanity. Enjoy anonymity in the crowd, but be ready to have your services demanded at any point in time. Your skill set determines your value and what role you’ll be given in the community; resist and you might find yourself on the wrong side of the wall come nightfall.

Life within the walls proceeds fairly similar to our own, though the effects of war remain visible in the degraded conditions of the buildings and a need to produce food and shelter using what’s readily available. Electricity is expensive, WIFI access limited, and military presence is everywhere. Markets are patrolled and inspected by law enforcement, but with the right amount of luck and investigative skills you can always find someone able to fulfill all your nefarious desires. Just be careful who you trust or you’ll find yourself in the company of monsters much bigger than yourself.

Cities are divided into two factions:

Military

What started out as martial law has turned the Military into the ruling body of whatever land they occupy. Military personnel are primarily concerned with security issues such as guarding the wall, enforcing the law, and protecting the civilians. The Military also tends to have dominion of healthcare and controlling which scientific projects are funded. They have the ability to step in and overrule the Civil Council at any moment. Depending on the city, soldiers are volunteers and/or conscripts. Violating the law may lead to a military sentence if needed.

Civilian

The Civil Council represents all civilians living within their city. Members of the council are elected to their position and they primarily focus on managing food production, shelter and job allotments, as well as civilian welfare. Primary civilian jobs within the city fall under construction, agriculture, and engineering. Trading goods or services is fairly common. Community ties tend to be pretty strong, but there is a darker underbelly every city. When the lights go out, the line between friend and enemy begins to blur.

Notable Cities:

Old York
: New York, but older now.

One of the largest intact cities, surrounded by a protective wall and mostly self-sufficient. Old York is very secure from outside threats, but it rots from the inside.

New Hope: Good vibes only.

New Hope is the largest and fastest growing restored city in North America. They’re one of the leaders in rebuilding war-damaged cities and towns and they’re quite innovative as a result. New Hope lacks the military discipline and defenses of cities like Old York, but they’re backed by those they’ve helped in the past, which is not a small number.

Bunker Town: Not So Crazy Now

If the Fallout Series ever had a protagonist awaken to a fully functional bunker, it would look a lot like this. An underground city that remained shut for 76 years before finally rejoining the rest of the world, Bunker Town is 100% self-sufficient and a pinnacle of engineering (lest you forget). It’s the only city completely run by civilians and they serve as the current leaders in all efforts to rebuild society.

Dream City: Life is better when you’re asleep.

Despite the name, Dream City is a complete and utter wreck. People from the other cities left with the idea of creating a utopia of invention and freedom, but poor planning meant they ran out of supplies (and more importantly food) early into building. Now, Dream City is a half-built wreck that harbors mostly outcasts and people banished from the other cities. It has poor security, but why bother when there’s nothing to steal anyways?
