Name: Jaien Herlis
MMORPG name: Merlock
Username: MerlockDepths (Glitched, can view her user)

Age: 23
Pronouns: She/Her
Orientation: Homoromantic (Demiromantic), Asexual
Are you looking to romance this character with someone else?:
Not necessarily. I am open to it. But because of the character's asexuality nothing sexual, please. I would prefer slow-paced and rising tension. And since she is demi you have to become a good friend or someone close to her first.

NPC, Coma Player, Conscious player: NPC
Species Information:
Name: Deep
Diet: Herbivore (eat small animals and plants)
Abilities: Breath air and water, natural armor, natural weapons, mental fortitude, water jets (for underwater movement but can also be weapons), immense physical strength, pressure adaptation, and night vision, aquatic animals treat them as neutral some even serving as mounts, extreme sense of smell, can sense pressure changes, extreme hearing, can sense tectonic activity (including movement nearby), can sense electrical currents around them, extra inventory space (opens up pockets of their exoskeleton)
Quirks: Needs to be fully dunked in water once a day, cannot live in extreme heat or cold, sheds exoskeletons often, rather heavy due to their exoskeleton

Elemental Strengths: Water, Electricity, Psychic
Appearance: Image. Can change color and size as the user wants. Can also change basic appearance things such as eyes and more. Can stand anywhere from 4 feet to 30 feet tall. And 2 feet to 8 feet wide. And between 5 feet to 30 feet long.
Magic: Psychic, Water (Will explain in a future post)

Time Played: N/A (Been around since the Reefs and Oceans update)
Town Role: Serves a variety of different roles. But usually seen underwater where she provides her services. Which vary significantly. For one she serves as a cook for underwater dishes which she does in her free time or when asked. The 2nd thing she does is fish and hunt. And then she is found to sell the important or profitable parts of these animals. 3rd she is known to craft magical trinkets and items for players and NPCs if given the items. Also known as an explorer and monster hunter. Many times has been seen combating monsters and winning. She has also gone on many expeditions into uncharted territories. Exploring many areas such as The Trench and other underwater locations. Also serves as an alchemist as she makes various strange substances made with parts of creatures she hunts. Can be seen occasionally at the Ocean Coast Market trading or selling her goods. Does not do anything without a price, however.
Ingame Reputation: 85/100 (considered unpredictable but mostly trustworthy)
Irl Reputation: N/A
Personality: Considered very cautious with her actions. If faced with a risky task she will take the most cautious and least risky approach possible. Considered generally trustworthy. And unless provoked usually won't cause violence. Relatively easy to piss off if you insult her too badly. Rather defensive most of the time. Reserved a lot. Does not like to get into the spotlight at all. As such hates public speaking. Very creative in her solutions to various problems. Grudging. If someone wrongs her (at least in her mind) she remembers it vividly. And usually at least dislikes or sometimes even hates a person for it. And it's hard to change her mind once this happens. She is also very stubborn as it's hard to change her mind about anything. Can be pushy and questioning considerably if she is talking to someone she cares about or a subject she cares about. Somewhat greedy as she desires wealth and other "values" she considers. Such values are often information, magic items, mounts/pets, creature parts, and more.
Backstory: Merlock was added in the Reefs and Oceans update initially as a quest giver and trader. Where she sold weapons, armor, and trinkets. Later she was changed into more than that. She divulged important pieces of lore of the Trench and other areas. Unbeknownst to the devs this change caused her to glitch. And somehow she was able to access her username that was embedded in the code to distinguish her from others. And started to question her nature. And found more and more which led her to realize this world is a simulation. Much else is unknown as she doesn't trust people very well, especially with her backstory. (Will expand IRP)
Long-Term Motivations: Explore the deep areas of the ocean such as The Trench fully. And explain her purpose, life, and more as an NPC.
Short-Term Motivations: Discover the difference between the real world and this one.
Description of House: Image
underwaterhouse.jpeg
Description of Facility: Found in the Ocean Coast Market. A small series of stalls where she sells her goods (trinkets, magic items, fish ect).

Christine Laurance
Calamity - ||CalamityOfTheWest44||

Appearance: Christine's in-game avatar comes off as Hispanic due to their tan complexion, though the true color of her eyes aren't visible due to the race of her character. She's roughly 6'1" and has shoulder length hair that's a soft chestnut color.

How she looks irl is similar to in-game, though her hair's a much darker brown and she's only 5'7" tall. Her skin is a little lighter than her avatar as well, though her emerald green eyes mislead people trying to find out who plays as her avatar.
Christine Laurance (Alternative).png
Default Clothes: Her default clothes consist of a white cowboy hat alongside a white poncho, with black shorts and a black shirt to contrast. However, her usual gear overshadows the more casual clothes of her avatar, so she's rarely seen in her default clothes thanks to one of her abilities.
Age: 27 Years Old
Pronouns: She/Her
Orientation: Heterosexual
Are you looking to romance this character with someone else?: While romantic relationships isn't her goal or focus, she is open to potential relationships

Name: Ghost
Magic: None
Once a playable race that was being developed early into the games lifespan, the idea was scrapped and made inaccessible for those joining the game for the first time after the patch that removed the race. Although the race can no longer be selected when creating your character, it can still be unlocked and selected due to in-game glitches - though doing so will permanently lock the player into that race without moderator intervention.

Those of the ghost race are riddled with various glitches that make completing any part of the game much harder than necessary, though this burden does come with various benefits as well. One such benefit is an innate immunity to status effects such as poison or slowing, though this also comes with the inconvenience of nullifying buffs as well. Despite the benefits though, those that play as Ghosts run the risk of getting banned from the game due to glitch exploiting, though some players have slipped under the radar for years without being punished.

Ghosts are normally invisible to all other players outside of PVP, though they do have the choice to become visible to other players. When they are visible they appear to be transparent, but otherwise there are no visual distinctions between them and other players.
NPC, Coma Player, Conscious player: Conscious Player

Time Played: ~14,000 Hours (10 hours a day over 4 years)
Town Role: Christine works as a train conductor, though she's also a gunslinger with a knack for banditry.
In-game Reputation: Christine is known for jump-scaring beginners when they first join the game, though she also provides them advice and shows them popular monster hunting spots throughout the beginner zone. She's also known as the 'Calamity to the West' by those within the guild, as she actively engages in PVP fights with other players that hunt in the western corners of the beginner zone. 25% of the loot she obtains from her banditry is donated to the guild.
Irl Reputation: Christine keeps to herself due to a variety of reasons, though those that have gotten close to her know about her love for all things wild-west themed.
Christine comes off as reserved irl to those she's only acquainted with or those who are strangers to her, though her friends know her to be energetic and kind. She's passionate about her love for anything wild-west themed, putting her nose to the grindstone to get what she wants. However, she's extremely anxious and insecure whenever she's outside of her comfort zone. She's quick to get heated when sticking up for her friends, though she's also quick to dissociate whenever certain pressures or topics rear their heads.

Christine tends to wear a mask whenever she's in-game, seemingly becoming an entirely different person. While she still shows some level of kindness to others she prefers to blend into the background online, only ever stepping into the spotlight when needed. She has an obsession with guns that never shows irl, using them to initiate PVP with other players and rob the player chest of their corpse using her lockpicking skill. She tends to prefer fighting players farther away from respawn points, and will often hide in graveyards as a safety net while waiting for the PVP timer to count down to zero.
Christine was born and raised in the Texas countryside with her strict conservative parents, who only provided her the necessities with little room for developing hobbies. She rarely ever got to watch tv like most other kids her age, though what little she was able to watch was whenever she snuck downstairs at night to watch the wild-west documentaries enjoyed. Though she initially didn't like it at first she grew to appreciate it more as her parents became stricter throughout her childhood, growing to despise them more and more as she slowly approached her teenage years. She often snuck out at night to hang out with her friends for a couple of hours, being cautious enough to make sure her parents never found out about her growing desperation for freedom.

It was when she was only 15 that tragedy would befall her.

It was one of the very seldom times her parents were late to pick her up from school, with her deciding catch a ride with her friend and their parents instead of waiting for an hour. The drive back to her house was more fun than with her parents as she and her friend chatted away, too immersed in what they were talking about to notice much of anything else. And then she could only recall the void between life and death she had been flung into, faintly hearing the loud blaring of a train horn and the screeching of contorting metal. It was there that she remained for the next few months of her life, unsure if she was alive and simply dreaming or if this was all death had to offer... An eternity in solitude looking at the dull emptiness of the void. She knew she was still alive the second she felt the warmth of something touching her hand and forearm, slowly opening her eyes to find herself in the hospital. Her initial view was of her friend sitting by the hospital window writing, though a quick glance down to the foot of her bed made it apparent that her parents were there as well. While she didn't have the strength to say anything or move her muscles, her friend was quick to notice that her eyes were open and that she was trying to look around.
Her world seemingly fell apart a week later, as she learned of what happened and how severely she was hurt. The car her friends parents were driving was hit by a train due to the railroad crossing's lights and barriers falling into disrepair, and only her friend and herself had survived the accident. While her friend escaped mostly unscathed she was less fortunate, as her legs had to be amputated and large portions of the skin and muscles making up her stomach and chest were practically mangled in the accident. It was a miracle she was alive at all after such an accident. While they were able to restore most of the tissues in both of the affected areas of her body, she was left with large permanent scars that would likely stick with her for the rest of her life. Even her arms didn't escape unscathed as they still had some minor scars scattered around. She felt herself shut down at the thought of seeing the scars left behind, only barely hearing her parents blame her for becoming such an unsightly mess. While she didn't know how she would go about her life from that point on, she knew that her parents needed to be out of her life.
She was quick to separate herself from her parents after she graduated high-school, moving out to the west coast with the help of her friend. She struggled to find a job that she could keep due to the lack of accommodations for disabled people, and it also didn't help that her self-esteem was completely shattered after the accident. It wasn't until she discovered the OCW charity that life showed her any kindness, signing up for their program in an attempt to rebuild her life from the ground up. It's been four years since she first joined Somnum.
Long Term Motivations:
-Improve her self-esteem
-Overcome her trauma
-Find people who can relate to her
Short Term Motivations:
-Prosthetic legs at some point?
-Overcome her insecurities
-???
Christine's Housing.jpg
Description of House: Christine owns a large cabin next to Bluebell Grove. While it looks like a more modern day log cabin on the outside, the entire interior is wild-west themed to some degree. One room in the house doesn't continue the theme however, acting instead as a place for her to display the firearms she's collected in-game and where she stores the excess ammunition she needs for each gun she owns.
Silver District Train Station - 'The Phantom Express'.jpg
Description of Facility: Christine owns and runs the Silver District's only train station, named the Styx Train Station after the Styx river mentioned in Greek mythology known for being what separated the world of the living from the world of the dead. While the train station nor the train don't serve the same purpose as their counterparts in Greek mythology, both the Styx Train Station and the Phantom Express have been known to have spirits lingering on or around the stations platform or on board the train itself. The station itself was built to give off a wild-west vibe, though the interior looks a little more modernized with various vending machines and long benches for people awaiting the train's arrival to sit or sleep.

General: Ghosts can range vastly in their looks due to players being able to replicate the glitch as any playable race, though all ghosts are characterized by their light weighted bodies and the similarities they share with whichever race they were originally a part of while they weren't glitched. It is unknown if NPCs can become ghosts or not.
Diet: While ghosts don't need to eat, they can choose to eat food like they had before becoming a ghost. Ghosts do still get whatever buffs and debuffs that the food they eat may apply.
Abilities:
  • Christine appears to be invisible to everyone until she initiates PVP with them, having become one of the first in the player base to discover the glitched Ghost race. As for how she discovered this glitched race of her own accord, she had been fighting other players near one of the beginner zones various railways when she had been finished off right as a train hit and dragged her body out of PVP range. The resulting glitch turned her body into a decorative corpse used in various vampire dens and graveyards, and resulted in her actual player model becoming transparent while permanently stuck in this glitched state. She can choose to become visible again by using one of her other abilities on herself, though she's still subject to the restrictions of that ability.
  • Due to her race being glitchy she cannot directly interact with other peoples player models, nor can they directly interact with her under normal circumstances. However, she can still interact with items and props normally so long as another player isn't holding or wearing them, with other players unable to interact with anything she's holding or wearing as well. This does not apply to projectiles however, as the glitch only applies to anything directly touching the affected players body.
  • Although she can still die and respawn like any other player, she doesn't respawn in the same places as other players. Due to her original body becoming a decorative prop, she can choose to respawn in any vampire den, graveyard, or other location that stores dead bodies that has at least one of those props used - including the coffin her original body now resides in. However, any graveyard that's being used to pray for the dead or mourn the death of an NPC is temporarily blocked as a respawn point until all living souls have left the site, and any vampire den that is cleared out won't become available as a respawn point until a full 24 hours have passed. Other possible respawn points include:
    • Castle Dungeons
    • Necromancer Lairs

  • Thanks to her glitched state Christine is immune to all status effects within the game, including biome specific effects such as heatstroke and frostbite. This is due to how status effects being applied, which are applied to the player by affecting their in-game bodies - with the glitch actively preventing this through having turned her original in-game body into a prop. There are only three ways to apply status effects onto her: Dragging her original body into specific biomes, inflicting status effects onto her original body through magic or potions, or directly through a PVP fight. However, this comes at the cost of affecting buffs as well. Both buffs and debuffs can also be applied through any food or drink she directly intakes, so other players can still poison food or drinks in hopes that she'll eat or drink the poisoned product.
  • One of the abilities that the glitched Ghost race gives Christine is that she can change her appearance at will, though she can only turn into other people that are currently online. Doing so will only last for 24 hours or until she cancels her ability manually, but she'll also become visible and tangible to everyone while she's transformed. Initiating PVP will keep her disguise regardless of what weapons she uses, though how she appears to fight can be vastly different from how she actually fights depending on the weapons she uses. Should she die while disguised she will respawn as normal, with the duration left of her transformation becoming the cooldown for the ability. Due to how the game allows players to create and record customized voices for their avatars she'll gain the voice of the player she's disguised as, though it doesn't help her to mimic that players mannerisms - a flaw that friends of said player would be quick to notice. Being disguised also doesn't hide one of her races quirks, though it does drastically dampen the effects of it.
  • Like most players Christine will still drop loot they were carrying on them upon death, though like her body her armor and weapons have also become permanently glitched. These pieces of equipment are now classified as the 'Haunted' set, which is specific to the glitched Ghost race in that they will never part upon death. What items that do drop upon death aren't safe for other players to pick up however, as all items will be granted the tag of 'Cursed' that marks the current location of the player that picked it up. In addition to marking that players location a 24 hour timer starts counting down, after which 5 items of her choice that are not 'Haunted' will be deleted. The cursed tag will be removed from items if she picks them back up, or if the 24 hour time limit passes. Players will no longer be tracked once the items lose the cursed tag. While not specific to the Ghost race the ability to curse loot upon death is a rare ability used by some players that selected the Demon race, making it still unknown to large swathes of the player base.
Quirks: Ghosts prefer to live in places with lots of shade or secluded from sunlight entirely, and they're also known to have a short temper when provoked.
Elemental Weaknesses: All forms of holy magic make quick work in dispatching ghosts, with fire magic, wind magic, spiritual attacks, and headshots from projectiles also being very effective against ghosts.
Elemental Strengths: Ghosts are resilient against physical attacks and dark magic, due to being resilient to both and their immunity to melee attacks outside of PVP.
Appearance: When she show themselves to players and NPCs they appear transparent like fog, though otherwise they appear as they did prior to becoming glitched. Ghosts also have a customizable aura that envelops their body, with effects ranging from glowing eyes to a fiery outline around their avatar no matter what angle you look at them from.

    Serena is of average height and a bit of a curvy figure. Serena didn't change much of her appearance from her real life appearance. Her biggest fear is that she lost weight and her muscle while being in a coma, but she presents herself in game the way that she remembers herself. The only difference she had made is a slight tint of her eye color, to make it look more golden brown. Serena style is that of 'cottage core', especially of soft yellows, pinks, and browns. Serena's default clothes is a off-white undercoat with a medium brown dress on top. She usually goes barefoot for her default settings and has a yellow straw sun hat on.

Brilliant coding by Ami here and poorly frankensteined by me.
I don't test my posts on light mode, so I recommend going dark mode for the read.

All art done by me. Ask me for permission to use it and how you're planning to use it.

Romeo Marin

---Appearance: (Picture is taking a long time for me to draw, he's gone through a complete rewrite so the initial design/drawing I had no longer fits.) Muscular and tall at 6'3". In Somnun, He wears his brown hair in a long, straightened ponytail that reaches his waist. Has naturally tan skin. His eyes are blue to match the sea and his large, oversized mosasaurs tail. Compared to real life, he only has a few minor differences, natural black hair, black eyes and obviously no tail or sharp teeth.
---Default Clothes: An open white button up, swimming trunks with a dreadful socks and sandals combination.
---Name: Romeo Marin
---MMORPG name: Rome
---Username: SaltySquidChef
---Age: 23
---Pronouns:
He/Him
---Orientation: Pansexual
---Are you looking to romance this character with someone else?: Yes if it feels organic, has chemistry and I like it. Open to polys.
---NPC, Coma Player, Conscious player: Conscious. His grandfather was in a coma, and so he was given a headset to hang out with him.
---Time Played: 5 years, since the age of 18. When his grandfather’s disease began to take over, Rome was given a headset. In his free time, it's pretty much all he does, play in the world.
---Town Role: Job hopper with a lot of hobbies. He mostly does manual labor found on bulletin boards. Rome’s got a space in his apartment for him to actually, physically exercise when he does so in the game. It’s his way of gaining while also having fun, but as you can imagine... it looks really dumb in real life, ESPECIALLY while swimming. Another role he has is spearfishing, using his tail and swimming ability to propel himself.
---Ingame Reputation: Used to be a lesser known chef at the Salty Squid, a restaurant that used to serve all kinds of sea creatures or plants grilled, fried or smoked. The owner of the place, Eduardo, was a man who slowly lost his body at 72. When the senior had been introduced to Somnum, his grandson Rome helped him rebuild the Salty Squid ingame. The place was made in an almost splitting image of Eduardo's real restaurant.. With the exception of a couple of upgrades he dreamt of being made in real life, of course. If you’re stuck in a video game, may as well take advantage of it, huh?
Eduardo was the connecting web of many social circles; a joyous man that some would forget was behind the counter as he chatted to random customers like they were old friends. It was because of his natural charisma and optimism that got the Salty Squid to host events regularly, to eating competitions, beer tasting nights, karaoke and more! For goodness sake, there wasn’t a single quiet night! The Salty Squid didn't just have a loyal customer base for Eduardo's cooking or charisma, but his musical skills too. When he was on break or had nothing else to do, he'd often strum his guitar for his patrons and give anyone who asked a lesson on the house! Not just limited to him either, many musicians from all over Somnum have come to play at the Salty Squid, some even with him. Every day it was like diving into a new fish tank, with different catches, conversations, even music genres–even the quiet chef Rome, mostly contained to the backroom, seemed to enjoy his time there.
When you go into the Salty Squid’s residence, which Eduardo often invited people to do, it’s full of contest prizes, gifts, and memorabilia. Above Eduardo's futon are trophies that say β€˜1# Contagious Smile’ β€˜Most Dad’ β€˜Grill Master’, gifted to him during various festivals.
Safe to say, because of Somnum, Eduardo Marin was able to overcome his grief of losing his son and daughter in law and succumb peacefully. His ingame avatar lays asleep at the residence, smiling like he’s dreaming about cooking.. When a real person dies, there’s a system to ask a moderator if you want to have a funeral with their avatar, and some people even request that they be turned into an npc. But Rome hasn’t done anything with Eduardo's avatar. When others bring it up to him, he becomes even more evasive. To be honest, he doesn’t think he’s ready for that closure yet.
Rome is petrified of opening up the Salty Squid. Not until he’s confident enough he could live up to his grandfather’s legacy.
As far as what people know about Rome besides Eduardo, here are the main pointers.
Bearded, jacked, and dressing like a high school bully, you’d think he’d be a loud, annoying jock stereotype, but Rome is completely nonverbal and has trouble expressing himself even in writing. Nobody outside of his irl work has actually heard his voice except in small grunts and hums, and it's been that way since the first death of his family. Rome doesn't know much sign language, he's working on that, but he's just always had a difficult time at retaining information. The spearfisher keeps a color coded index of flashcards on his person with basic phrases and a knowledge of how to use body gestures to get by. It can be difficult to communicate with him at first, so many unfortunately haven’t attempted.
---Irl Reputation: Works as a beach lifeguard. Fairly quiet and kept to himself; the only time he’ll speak is on duty, especially because it can be life-saving. But it’s extremely uncomfortable and gives him dysphoria for hours after. After his job, he usually heads straight to his simple apartment and puts on his headset to destress.
Other than his job, Rome is never recognized and he's secretly, shamefully thankful for that. His grandfather Eduardo was never actually famous or that well known in real life, neither did his restaurant get as loyal of a fanbase. As kind people usually are, they often go forgotten.
---Personality: He hates the sound of his voice. It sounds alien and he isn't sure how to use it without sounding robotic, how to give it personality when it feels like he himself hasn’t properly developed one yet. He's had his personal growth stunted several times with the loss of family and tends to obsessively and quietly worry about people dying.
There is a 80% chance that when you see him he's having an identity crisis. He wants to be Eduardo, he wants to be his mother, he wants to be his father, but he also wants to be what they wanted of him. The stress of completing all of these things at once has lead him to never try, always saying to himself that tomorrow would be the day. He even has a rough time communicating with Rory, his current and only friend.
But despite all of that, he can be very physically affectionate when given the go ahead. Hugging, holding hands, cupping someone's face, snuggling, all of it is his favorite. He's like a giant buff teddy bear, really. Being alone and cold is his greatest fear, so 4 in-game pet eels keep him company. He can't fall asleep in real life unless he has his headset on and is cuddling with them.
I do not suggest reading this, as I plan on organically unveiling it as the story goes along and this is VERY long. More details will be brought in story.

He grew up in a wonderful, loving and affectionate household. When they weren't managing the restaurant, the Marin's bonded over playing music together. Eduardo played guitar, his mother the violin, and Rome's aunt and father sang as they had since they were children. Rome would join in on his own way as long as he could remember, banging at the Salty Squid's pots and pans. Nobody got angry at him for being too long during their jam sessions, instead they embraced and taught him to treasure his own sound.
In his early life he was admired for his genetics; so many old ladies pinching his cheeks, extra candies than his classmates every valentines day, always being picked for dodgeball and more. Not to mention for all his childhood, he constantly met people that would just drone on and on about how great either his parents, grandfather or aunt was and that he'd better respect them. So annoying! Of course he knew they were amazing, they were the bestest actually, and Rome made damn sure to brag about how they could beat up any other kids’ parents!
When it got to school Rome certainly wasn’t a teachers pet(he lacks the ability to retain information), but he was definitely the coach’s! His high energy got him far in sports, always making friends not because of his social ability or lack thereof but his physical.
The Marin's always had the impression he’d grow up to be a big league in the sports industry. To them, it was just a matter of what sport he’d end up going with. Money wasn’t an issue either since they had a successful family restaurant that was sure to be passed down through generations. When Romeo becomes a big league and gets his bag, he could come back to raise his own family here. If that didn't work, a sibling had already been a work in progress. They prepped him to be the best big brother he could be.
But unfortunately, Rome always remained a single child and it wasn't looking like his aunt would start a family soon. But that's okay! He had his sport friends! And they already promised they’d be friends forever forever, so he was set for life!
β€œGenetic lottery” is often overused, only accounting for the outside and not underneath. Some β€˜winners’ could have mental conditions, generational trauma, or even medical issues. Truly, the genetic lottery is extremely rare.
There was a reason why his Romeo felt like the strongest guy in the household at age 11, being asked to do various strength related tasks to help his parents. By the time they caught his dad’s pancreatic cancer, it was too late. Past a certain point pancreatic cancer moves too fast and nothing can be done, and as Rome learned, β€œthey have at least a year left” could turn into a day at any second with a sickly person. Its victim’s fate is already sealed, the matter becomes how soon.

Everyone was broken after the incident, but it hit nobody as hard as it did for his mother. She personally dealt with too many people in her family succumbing to cancer and after so many scares she’d always feared she wouldn’t live long enough to see her son graduate. When it took her husband, for christ’s sake, it felt like fate’s joke. She did her best to raise her son as a newly widowed mother, and her in-laws helped the most he could. In a tiny part of her mind, it felt like maybe the love of her life had somehow taken the brunt for her. She could live for her son. Bittersweet.
But.. life often lacks the sweet. Three years later a genuine diagnosis came to be. Unlike him they caught her early, so there was a chance she could recover completely. At very least, she could stay with her son a while longer. And so she did. He visited her every day.
To this day, Rome isn't sure which death hurt the most; the surreal suddenness of his father, or the gradual decay of his mother.
Both of his parents,
too close,
too young,
far too common.
The child was overcome with grief. In such a happy and functional family, nobody was prepared for such tragedies, let alone how to console Rome about it. With all the medical bills too, therapy wasn’t an option. The socially awkward but energetic kid became unmotivated. Once his sports performance dropped, a lot of kids had no reason to talk to him. One of the worst things about losing parents young is that you never get to grow old enough to relate to them, to truly understand. You never got to have those mature retrospectives. You no longer have someone to recount your stories in times of innocence. There will always be a level of mystery to yourself, a permeant sense of never being able to obtain that closure. Maybe the worst of it, is that to be the perfect son, daughter, child, feels like almost an impossible task.
In a way, he felt survivor’s guilt. If he didn’t live on for them, bring as many smiles as they did to others, he would let them down.
Since then, he’s always felt like a blurry portrait, losing his identity petal by petal until all that's left is a bland, ugly stem. When his mother got permanently hospitalized, he was left in his grandfather and aunt's care. He kept busy by helping them run their family business and visiting her whenever possible, but life began to feel like a single, long episode where nothing happens. Rome since has lived in a consistently numb state. It's hard to feel motivated when your genetics may lead you to die early and all you have done was for nothing.

When Eduardo became unconscious, Rome understood it wasn’t like his parents–Eduardo was older in age, but it still didn’t hurt any less. The medical bills went through the roof and nobody had the resources to pay. Rome and his aunt were forced to sell Salty Squid, the last part of their family they had left. In Somnum, Rome never had the heart to tell Eduardo about them selling the restaurant; it was his pride and soul and Eduardo worked his whole life to ensure it would go down in generations. So Rome made up stories and gave fictional updates on how it's been doing. Eduardo was too optimistic to ever consider his grandson was lying.
When Eduardo left him the virtual Salty Squid, it.. really meant the world to him. Rome's kept the building ever since, pays all the ingame currency and all to keep it, but it hasn’t been opened since his death, exactly 1 year ago.
Back then, when Rome spent overtime at the restaurant cleaning dishes, Eduardo made him promise to find many friend groups and pursue his dreams. Not thinking about it much, Rome agreed. A day later Eduardo passed away peacefully.
If there’s any time to stop wallowing and fulfill that promise, it’s on his anniversary.

---Long Term Motivations: Find passions and the drive to open up the Salty Squid to be as successful and endearing as it was before. Be the person his parents and grandfather would’ve wanted. Maybe even be them. He also hopes to fill the holes in his heart by finding a new family.
---Short Term Motivations: Socialize, keep himself busy, try not to spiral and isolate again.
---Description of House/Facility: Lives in Salty Squid on Silver District, which has a residential area on the 2nd floor with 4 rooms. One that was for him, his parents, grandparents, and his aunt. Think Bob’s burgers in terms of structure. The building is wedged between a few others. The exterior has blue bricks, white and cyan striped banners and usually a lot of cats nearby, hanging about at the usually abandoned outdoor seating area. If you’re lucky, sometimes you’ll bare witness to Rome leaving out bowls of wet catfood and petting these happy felines.
The inside dining room is one large room that has an empty middle with tables and chairs boxing in around the edges. The color scheme are mostly whites, cyans and blues.

Species
---Species Information: With the No Longer Extinct update that debuted a two years ago, a lot of species were added with it, including a unique playable race called the Ancients. These are humanoids with traits of extinct creatures based which one they'd like to pick; parasaur crests, sabertooth teeth, raptor claws, etc. In addition to what benefits these physical traits may give them, these players will not be attacked or feared by the creatures they represent and will become 'neutral'. The extinct animal may even listen to them to a certain extent, like or allowing riders even if they are not tamed. But unless you are level 30, you cannot guide them to cause harm or destruction, and once they have suffered even one -1HP they will stop listening and either fight or flight with what caused it.
In Rome's case, he is a Mosasaurs ancient. Besides his huge tail and sharp teeth, there isn't a lot of similarities since he prefers a human appearance.
---Name: Mosasaurs Ancient.
---Magic: None.
---Diet: While Mosas are carnivores, that doesn't stop him from enjoying plants time from time.
---Abilities: A giant and useful tail, and a lot of sea dinosaurs are neutral to him unless attacked.
Quirks: Sighs come out rumbly and echo-y like a dinosaur,
Elemental Weaknesses: Electricity, ice, metal
Elemental Strengths: Water, blood(he only uses this to heat up his own when cold)

Rory Reyes

jelly_atlas.png

(to be read AFTER Rome's sheet.)
~~~Default Clothes: Tank top and PJ pants.
~~~Name: Atlas Reyes. Although not a dead name, it's more like.. an undead name. Something that brings back bad memories and a bad reputation. They prefer to hide it.
~~~MMORPG name: Rory
~~~Username: AtLasV3gas
~~~Height: 5'3
~~~Age: 24
~~~Pronouns: They/Them
~~~Orientation: Pansexual
~~~Are you looking to romance this character with someone else?: Yes, if they have romantic chemistry. They are also open to a polycule.
~~~NPC, Coma Player, Conscious player: Comatose Player

~~Time Played: 2 years.
~~Town Role: Aquarium owner, underwater gardener. Their private garden located in a coral reef attracts a lot of fish that they catch for the aquarium or sell to some business owners. They are also Rome's fish-hunting partner, using their cosmic leaps to suddenly surprise fish and catch them by hand. Rory prefers to catch pretty and small creatures, while Rome likes the bigger and meatier ones.
~~~Ingame Reputation: Pretty active and always likes to hit two pigeons with one stone when they can. Had been a frequent customer at the Salty Squid for a while until they became Eduardo's friend and eventually employee. Rory did a lot to help organize Salty Squid events, and Eduardo often returned the favor by embarrassing Rory, including a thank you with every speech before the start of them. Other than that, that's all they're known for. Sure, sure, Rory is good at making small talk, but despite their happy-go-lucky front, they keep everyone at an arm's distance except Rome. A lot of people are surprised by their dynamic, considering that Rory seems too bubbly for him. But the two seem more similar than what they appear on the surface.
~~Personality: Rory finds themselves constantly in a mask out of fear of rejection and public humiliation. They're friendly, sociable and always has the same small smile, but every line feels recited that many make the assumption that they're an npc. They have such a guarded wall that even though Rory seems to takes criticism well, it always goes their to heart no matter what, even the extremely harmful variety. They fear but deeply really crave attention and to change the minds of those that don't like them.
The ex-influencer might always start with the intention not to try very hard, but they always end up trying to impress others with every single small task, something that results in more and more burnout and hurt when it's rejected. Their deep desire is to let go of all their entire identity, their personality, past and wall.
Lots of ableism, bullying, intentionally putting oneself in dangerous situations, and mentions of alcoholism. Being a neurodivergent person with a fear of cameras who has seen countless neurodivergent public figures be harassed, mocked and sometimes tricked, it inspired me to make this character.
Not necessarily to know! Just like what I put at the start of Rome's backstory, this information is better off revealed in-story.
Has deliberately changed things in their avatar like minor face details and hairstyle to hide their previous identity and also look more nonbinary. Worried that everything they were known for could bleed into here, when they want to leave it all behind and ignore it for the better or worse. Like Romeo, they have the unhealthy coping mechanism of always saying tomorrow is the day.
Atlas is an ex livestreamer. Before they made a social media account themselves, they were known for being the friend of a popular influencer, Jazmine. When Atlas was diagnosed with ADHD and autism at 16, their friend changed from instagram modelling to doing skits, taking advantage the new diagnosis and telling Atlas to act into stereotypes and giving them blatantly ableist scripts to follow. She also had a habit of recording Atlas without permission, her fanbase joining in on the mockery of her neurodivergent friend. When called out, she'd make Atlas speak about how it's really all just fine, lie about how they were the one who wrote those scripts and how it was all staged. Atlas was often a safeguard, a backup plan that she threw under the bus. Jazmine started earning lots of money through her social media presence, so once she turned 18, she decided to take the risk and move to Los Angeles as soon as possible. As her parents recorded to post it on social media, Jazmine hugged Atlas one last time, and she asked them if one day they could follow her and reunite. Of course, Atlas accepted.
Jasmine stayed extremely popular, her content moving from skits to actual television, becoming a prominent actress. Two years later, after saving up lots of money, Atlas fulfilled the promise. Atlas made a comeback with the new name, and while at first it seemed like they were just like their old self, their personality slowly began to morph. They grew a typical LA way of speech, they masked a lot more and they gradually became just like every other influencer. This wasn't a change that anybody noticed, because Atlas only began to really get followers after they had lost their identity. Their relationship with the fanbase was founded on unhealthy mechanisms.
When they began livestreaming, occasionally their bouts of stress and declining mental health would be seen by countless people. The mask they wore all the time would end up with it shattering in total meltdowns, attracting a fanbase of people that wanted to see the trainwreck unfold. But while this happened, they became more popular, they got more money, more opportunities than ever. Many drama commentators noted how it had become a toxic cycle.
Things changed for certain that day when Jazmine died of alcohol poisoning, some connected it with how Atlas’ livestreams had become more and more dangerous, with them walking on top of bridge railings and tall structures when donations asked them to. When inevitably, an accident had occurred, and just as it had destroyed them, their viewership had saved them from certain death by contacting authorities. They have been in a coma ever since, and not even that has stopped the harassers from tricking hospital staff to come to visit their body and continue to make a mockery of them.
Same ones as before, peer pressure, improper use of medicine, mentions of taking medicine that haven't been prescribed.
Atlas came from a bland Oregon town, in an equally average apartment building. Although Atlas loved to befriend all sorts of neighbors, one friendship was held to a pedestal. They had been neighbors with their childhood friend, Jazmine since they were toddlers. With their parents being good friends, it was only natural that they'd push their children together and it worked! They had an unspoken agreement about alternating care, sleepovers at whose place and the car that brought them to school swapping every other day. It was like if you took all the fun aspects of having divorced parents–two holidays, lots of outings and always prepared dinners, and you didn't even have to have divorced parents!
It was a good strategy and their parents never got tired of parenting this way. It truly felt like At and Jaz were siblings.
Jaz had always been attached to social media, and Atlas was really good at making outfits and cosplays, their special interest since they were young. When she requested if Atlas could make some outfits for her social media, Atlas did it for free. It made them glad to see their work being admired by others, even if they were never properly attributed credit.
When Atlas was diagnosed with ADHD and autism, Jaz suddenly made the change from instagram modeling to skits. Some of Jaz's most popular posts at the time even included Atlas, who often became the butt of the joke and recited lines Jaz gave them that stereotyped them to their diagnosis. After that had become normalized to Atlas, another β€˜quirk’ Jaz had picked up was recording her moments with Atlas without their consent or knowledge.
But Atlas convinced themselves that they didn't mind all of this even deep down it hurt and felt deeply wrong, they were best friends. As Jaz said, 'Atlas owed it to her'. Because of her they had their own tiny fandom now, one Atlas was too optimistic to see until later was just a bunch of people laughing at them, not along. By her senior year there was no end to the brand deals, and Atlas, seeing how happy their friend was, continued to support her and do what they could. Of course, it was sad when Jaz moved out at 18 to become a Los Angeles influencer, but Atlas knew it was only a matter of time she'd leave the nest with the rate of money coming in. With a tearful hug at the airport, Jaz asked Atlas if once they completed high school, they could follow. Atlas agreed, but not just because they were on camera; because something in Jazmine's voice sounded genuinely fearful.
Jaz had a new life. While they texted the first few months, it eventually fizzled out when Jaz’ dms were now handled by a random social media manager. Atlas told themself she must've somehow forgotten to give them a way to contact her. Regardless, Atlas never forgot the promise. They spent a few years working as an elevator technician, becoming rather skilled in all things electricity while in their past time they fulfilled cosplay commissions. They worked extremely hard, all to ensure their risky move to Los Angeles would be a little less risky.
They got a small but loyal following for their craft, and they had plenty of long lasting friends here, but Atlas never deemed it as being enough, not after seeing Jazmine's success. It wasn't until after seeing her old content, one of Jaz's agents reached out to Atlas. He convinced Atlas they had enough money, that they would handle everything and they could make them a star like their childhood friend. At the age of 21, Atlas excitedly followed in their friend's footsteps, signing away at the agency's contracts and hopping aboard the prepaid plane. Unbeknownst to them, that bad decision wrecked their life. Just had it had to Jazmine.
Atlas became more and more engaged with social media. When their feet touched Los Angeles, they knew instantly what they wanted to go by. Atlas. A fun pun that their agent endorsed. They followed the agent’s instructions to a tee. It began lax, like posting every day, engaging with fans, but it quickly evolved. The seemingly gracious agent would request more and more money as their demands became more taxing and impossible.
β€œNobody will like those ugly outfits or costumes. Here, do this trending outfit instead.”
β€œPeople love it when you recreate trending outfits, they want more. You should at least post five times a day. Oh, and you can make copies of that outfit, right? We need 10 more to give to other influencers by the end of this week.”
β€œYour personality is too.. eccentric for people to latch onto… You’re not going to meet the engagement by the deadline your contract states. Here, take these.”
β€œThe algorithm isn't picking you up. You’re losing your audience. Try livestreaming.”
β€œEveryone thinks that you're boring. Loosen up. Here, take some notes from these livestreamers.. They constantly do crazy stuff and get tons of donations.”
β€œListen, those stunts you pulled are getting lots of engagement. Keep it up!”
β€œI know your schedule is full, but I signed you to this reality show. Hope you don't mind.”
Every day became every moment they had to learn to mask up their mannerisms and speech or else they'd be publicly mocked. And they still weren't satisfied with the mask. No matter what, Atlas could never meet their expectations.
With the lack of results, their agent amped up the pressure, constantly reminding Atlas how they were failing to fulfill the hidden requirements in the contract. They had no time to contact their family or friends back at home. In desperation to be β€˜normal’ like their agent asked, they started taking whatever β€˜medicine’ the scummy agent asked of them alongside their regular medication. Not only was that a terrible decision that never worked and made them feel sickly each and every day, but nobody can or should want to cure neurodivergency, they should be taught how to embrace it like Atlas' parents had. The toll mixing medicines took on their body and mind was indescribable, it made every single second hell. But that's exactly what the agent wanted.
Their social media manager raised a more and more bloodthirsty fanbase, intentionally aggregating them to keep them engaged to the carefully orchestrated train wreck that was Atlas. After a year of this gradual and slow corruption, Atlas accidentally finally managed to do what they came here for. Some frat boy personality was throwing a huge birthday party at an influencer house again. Multiple bands playing at once, crowds of people talking loudly so they can be heard over overs. Atlas did what they usually do and sought out the balcony, trying not to cry from the constant overstimulation
Off the balcony all alone, there she was, puking off the edge. Too much alcohol, and her β€˜friends’ had left her to drink more. In these kinds of circles you get desensitized to it, Atlas had even been in her shoes more than once, so they stayed. It wasn't until two cigarettes in Atlas even realized who it was in the first place; a familiar voice, small and meak, requesting a cigarette. Jazmine's voice.
As she faced them, Atlas hardly recognized her after what the industry had done. Her facial features had completely altered to fit beauty standards, just like themselves. Her eyes were bloodshot from crying, concealer barley hiding the darkest eye bags, her previously full and pretty cheeks sunken in from lack of nutrition. There was not a shred of recognition in her gaze. It was that instant they knew exactly why she hadn't contacted them. They've gone through the same thing.
Even through all that she had done; she still never deserved this. Neither of them did. They were down the same path, and all of Atlas’ old self and thoughts was screaming at them. They wanted so badly to forget all the bad that she did, to say 'Remember those silly old sleepovers we had as kids? Watching disney movies in our princess themed sleeping bags. How we used to recite those lyrics and our parents complain. Let's run away and do that. Back to our parents.'
But the words couldn't leave their mouth. Their agent said this was a rough spot that every celebrity goes through, many leave just before they hit big. Maybe both of their problems will sort themselves on their own. Atlas gave her the cigarette, and with all their instincts fighting against them, they wandered off back inside without a word.
A week later she found out she had died. Alcohol poisoning. Her friends left her again.
And so did Atlas.
Atlas’ livestreams had since become more and more dangerous, doing more things for money so the reactions of their fans could numb them. Whatever donaters asked, they'd do, granted it only effected them. Walk on safety rails? Easy. Dance on the edge of high places? Perfect. Their agent loved it for how much it was raking in and enabled this behavior. It didn't take long before something actually happened.
The same guy was throwing another party, and Atlas wandered off to the same balcony they last met Jazmine on. Against their usual schedule, they livestreamed themselves at the dead of night, claiming that they'll do anything the donations asked.
When they asked for them to dance on top of the railing, they did so. They fell.
If it hadn't been for some of the viewers contacting authorities, this would've led to their death. Since then, Atlas has been in a coma.
They're far too afraid to exit their little bubble out of fear of being recognized. Every night they fear waking up to the shitshow they left in the real world. They've even changed their name. Rory. Their parents have been given headsets, but Rory has deliberately avoided them by sticking to the sea and ignoring their messages, doing exactly what Jazmine had once done to them. Rory fears that if their parents saw them, how Rory changed, it'd break them all for good.
Rory met Rome after befriending his grandfather Eduardo, or.. More like how Eduardo befriended them, really. Rory was a regular Salty Squid customer. Reminded them of a mom and pop shop they'd frequent with Jazmine and their parents. After spending a full day trying to enjoy making costumes again, they gave up and decided to drink at the Salty Squid. They must've had a grimace because the senior, instead of his usual 'hola', asked 'are you alright?'
In just a few words, he got it all out of them. In the region's reefs, it was like all their dreams had come true. They were now technically 'free' and could start anew.. Their misery never left, just worsened. Sure, the newfound therapy services helped, but their mind never left the past like they hoped it would upon waking up. For a while they desired free time more than everything, but now it had become their greatest nightmare. All the hobbies they enjoyed before just brought up bad memories.
Then Eduardo hit them with something they never expected to hear. "Want to learn guitar?" Rory was so caught off guard they didn't know how to answer, causing Eduardo to laugh it off. "Usually helps me. When I get lost in my thoughts, I make a huge racket. Reminds me of what they are. Just thoughts." He slides the receipt to them. "Listen, me and some musicians, we have a performance tonight. Come later if you'd like to see." '7PM' the receipt said.
Long story short, Rory practically became his second apprentice after that. When Rory wasn't playing a guitar, they occupied themselves with their new job as a fish supplier for the Salty Squid, feeling guilty if they hadn't returned the favor. Rory had become friendly rivals with Eduardo's grandson, wordlessly competing to get the fanciest catches.
The details of how their friendship evolved are mostly unknown, but what is known is that ever since Eduardo's death, Rome became Rory's business partner and helped out with the construction of the aquarium.
Rory themselves don't know how to describe the dynamic. Sure they're friends, but it's mostly circumstantial. They both miss the Eduardo. Other than that, they hold a secret resentment for each other. They want to be like Rome, a blank slate who has yet to find their identity, hasn't made any huge mistakes and only has up to go. Meanwhile Rome feels a guarded jealousy for Rory. He admires their drive to pursue passions and goals, even if they're not the ones they should be after. Rome wishes he could have a following, live family members he could see, and an actual personality underneath the shell rather than just an empty husk. It's safe to say neither of them have completely opened up to each other, otherwise there'd both realize there's nothing to be jealous over.
~~~Long Term Motivations: Get over their fears and reunite with their parents, eventually improve as a person, actually use the coping mechanisms they've been taught.
~~~Short Term Motivations: Upgrade the aquarium, get many fish friends to talk to, keep themselves distracted.
~~Description of House: Lives in a giant bubblegum pink sea anemone located in one of the nearby coral reefs. This one is actually pretty well hidden, only accessible underwater through a cave or on land if you know where in between the palm tree forest to look. They've worked really hard to make this into a beautiful, private underwater garden.
~~Description of Facility: Lionfish Aquarium--Tourist Spot
Harming the fish in exhibits is prohibited.
A newly opened and small aquarium. Each exhibit is like a spacious art piece filled with beautiful plants, props and fish. There are currently only 10 exhibits and the biggest aquatic creatures they have are the marine iguanas. It's looking to be promising though, the owner is looking to buy bigger and cooler fish once they have the money. They don't seem to show up very often during open hours.
It looks like a normal aquarium, but you can access their exhibits just by walking through the windows, which are actually magical barriers that only players can enter through. From there, it's like a petting zoo! Petting and snuggling with fish is allowed and encouraged. It's a nice place to feel alive.
For land breathers, once you buy a ticket, you're given a necklace with a waterbreathing charm that makes you grow gills when you wear it. This necklace only works at the Lionfish Aquarium and the wearer cannot exit the Aquarium while having it in their inventory. For mermaids without human legs or other disabled folk, wheel chairs are provided and the penguin staff will help you get into exhibits if needed.
The aquarium rests on beach docks so it can attract merfolk and land dwellers. It's the furthest facility down silver street.
Species Details
~~~Name: Cetus Starborn (Celestial Aquarium), coral reef variant.
~~General: (WRITTEN BY NUGGET, MORE IN WORLDBUILDING)
Cetus Starborn (Celestial Aquarium); Named for the constellation Cetus, the whale. Starborn from a celestial aquarium rest in the middle ground between celestial and cosmic energies, but have a level of magical potential on par with volcanic and tundra starborn.
Solar Aquarium; When a falling star strikes a lake, river, or ocean the luma region it leaves behind is one of the most unique. The heat from the star glasses the area surrounding the region, creating an underwater tank of sorts around the perimeter of the luma region. A species of creature laying somewhere between alligator and lantern fish resides within. These are called Amongators- meant to reference Amon Ra, but bastardized as among gators by players. (Writing stops ^^)
Rory chose this because they adore how visually beautiful and distracting it is, and the abundance of special effects they have too! It also helps that underwater muffles a lot of sounds and makes it easier to be less overstimulated everything and just enjoy the visuals.
~~Diet: Omnivore. Likes flavors that pop out, doesn't like bland foods.
~~Abilities/Quirks: Gravity effects them slower even when not in water, allowing for a feather fall-like effect. Cosmic leap is hard to master underwater, but once you learn how not to spin out of control it becomes really fun! It's like doing barrel rolls. Golden sparkles follow their trail too, creating a really mystical effect. When exhausted to a Starling form, Rory takes on the look of a dead, dried up starfish you'd buy for decor. Due to their underwater nature, they do not have the ability to summon Solar Flares, but they make up for it what they can do magic-wise.
~~Elemental Weaknesses: Wind, Poison(exception: does not get effected by poison or venoms that originate from underwater creatures. They can eat pufferfish as they please), Metal, Ice
~~Elemental Strengths: Nature, Water, Cosmic
~~Magic: Light cosmic magic to use for performances and to do pretty things. These are mostly visual and audible, and cannot be used to hurt people or impersonate things.
They can talk to sea creatures. Rory uses this to make the best β€˜ room β€˜ for them as possible, taking extra care with every aquarium.
They can also speed up the growth of aquatic polyps and plants, and if they expend their energy they can also control them. Think a weak version of poison Ivy.
Some higher levels would use this to control seaweed and drown people, but Rory mostly just likes the visuals and assistance it gives them. If they have a bundle of seaweed on them, they can practically use it like another arm, sometimes catching fish with it.
~~Appearance: Starfish seek out attaching themselves to Cetus Starbone. It's a symbiotic relationship, clumps of starfish climb up top a sleeping starborne to sap their magical energy and in exchange, they feel like tiny hugs and have the magic powers to shoo off nightmares and make someone feel marginally happier. The more starfish, the more effective! That's why Rory always has a couple on their cheek and legs.
Having accessories made from various sealife will increase someone's mana, so Rory takes advantage of this when they can. Even though they've lost a lot of passion for making outfits, they have a couple from spurs of inspiration. Not as many as they once, though.
