Pen.

It was an unexpected turn of events to say the least. The thief got away but Pen had memorized that pathetic little face and would for the end of her days. If there was one thing she was great for, it was holding a grudge.

Sure, it was nice that the team had realized what had went on but what good was an experience going to be? There was a criminal about! Markus might have been fine losing a bit of coin, but Pen was already low on the ring of poverty. Now she had to work even harder to climb up.

The group is ushered to The Leaky Cauldron's side door and into the chaos. Thankfully, the Chudley Cannons are in a smaller room within the pub and only a handful of fans are allowed in at a time. The group is moved to the front of the line and are inside to meet them in just under a few minutes. Even Poppy, who she frankly didn't know much about, joined them. She felt a small sense of gratitude that the girl had spoken up. Perhaps she'd have a better chance at speaking to her at another point.

Garrett Gudgeon, the Seeker of the team, greets them with a concerned expression. "Don't normally walk straight up ta the fans, but I 'eard what happened to ya lot. Always someone lookin' to scam, aye? Sorry 'bout that." He nods firmly. "Signatures and photographs and everythin' are on us. Don't worry 'bout a thing."

Garrett Gudgeon. GARRETT GUDGEON was right in front of him, in fully Chudley glory. He made a mental note to get robbed more often.

He couldn't help himself, a nervous chuckle left his mouth before he could stop it but he couldn't wrangle any meaningful words into sentences.

He looked over at Pen, his eyes wide and pleading. Words. Say words for me, Pen.

Pen had kept a scowl on her face since the entire magician fiasco but managed to take a moment to look the Seeker up and down quickly. Just a regular person. At the mention of free signatures and photographs , she did soften slightly. Maybe she could sell the items and make her money back that way.

She had every intention of keeping to a foul mood still until she saw how utterly star struck her Captain had become. The nervous laughter was enough to nearly make Pen snort. It's a Quidditch player, not Merlin himself. She stepped forward, shooting Markus a clear look that said get it together before speaking.

"Appreciate it. I'm Pen. You don't have to write anything on mine though." She gave a polite nod of her head, but her demeanor was definitely not at all like her nervous teammate.

Poppy's eyes widened—awe evident in her features—a nervous excitement had her unable to stand still. "Oh, You can make mine out to Poppy! That's me," she added, her words tumbling out of her mouth in an embarrassing stream.

Briar couldn’t hide the smile on her face as she watched the others, a tendril of warmth unfurling in her chest.

"Uh, I’m Briar, but, actually, could you make it out to Arthur?”
She gave the Quidditch player a discreet once-over, already imagining her father’s reaction when he received the signatures.

Somehow, he managed to get some words out. "Markus Ollivander. Big fan. " He did his best to hold back his enthusiasm. "Autographs and a photograph?" Blimey, the day was getting better and better. He couldn't resist shooting Pen a rather large grin.

She shot him a grin, along with a very dramatic eye roll, right back. Everyone seemed happy, so she tried her best not to spoil it with a mood. She inched closer to Briar, just enough she could whisper with only her hearing.

"Lets see if any of these players are fit enough to make up for their shite losing streak."

As Charles moved towards the source of the sound, Celeste crept behind him, mindful of her steps. The last thing she needed were her heels making too much noise on the stones and alerting anyone that they might have an unwelcome audience. As they neared the wall to the alleyway, she could hear voices, but she couldn’t quite make out what they were saying. She could tell from the hard expression on Charles’ face that it wasn’t anything good though. As he signaled his warning that he was heading in, Celeste moved so that she could move with him as he burst through the gate.

There were a few things that Celeste was absolutely certain of when it came to Charles, and one of them was that even though he didn’t take pleasure in doing it, his stature was intimidating, especially when paired with his booming voice. As he fully stood from where he had been trying to hide behind the wall, Celeste pushed in after him. While she wasn’t great at fighting spells, she was slippery, which was often enough to buy her time. Time that she would need if Charles was taking most of the agro from the men in the alley. As spells were shot off, Celeste practically dove for the child at Charles’ shout, throwing up her own shield spell to assure that she could make it to the boy without getting hit.

She was looking him over before Charles could even ask, checking to make sure that he hadn’t been accidentally hit by anything or scuffed up at all. Thankfully he just looked frightened, watching them with wide eyes as if shocked at their appearance and shaking like a leaf. Tears gathered in his eyes and he sniffled as he assured them that he was okay, which caused Celeste to give a little sigh of relief before calling out to Charles, “He seems to be okay. I don’t see his mother though.”

The door close to them quickly opened and Celeste moved to reach for the boy, lifting her wand, but paused with it half raised when she saw Silas and Sebastian exiting the building with a woman she recognized as the boy's mother. Pocketing her wand, she stepped towards the group of professors to give their reunion some space as the boy’s mother sprinted towards him with a relieved shout, wrapping him in her arms as she looked him over, "Oh, Arthur! I'm so sorry, dear. I didn't notice you had run off."

The boy for his part seemed a bit more relaxed now that his mother was here. He let her look him over as he flushed with embarrassment, hugging his mother back despite the audience. "I'm okay, ma! But can we go back now? This place is darker than where we were..."

The woman nodded and stood straight, holding her son's hands. She turned back to the group and smiled appreciatively, "Thank you so much for looking out for us. I am, erm, what is the word... a Muggle? My son is a first year at Hogwarts and this is our first time here at Diagon Alley," she explained with a pained expression. "Would you mind walking us back? I'm afraid I don't entirely remember how we got here."

Celeste knew she wouldn’t be much use when it came to finishing up with the men that were currently tied up on the ground, so she was quick to offer her assistance. “I’ll walk with them to get them back out to Diagon Alley,” she offered, shooting the mother a reassuring smile before looking back at her companions, “I still expect us to continue our shopping once you’ve finished up here. And I’m sure you’re very welcome to join us as well, Sebastian.”

She waved to the three of them as she walked with the mother and son back towards the exit of Knockturn Alley, glad to be getting out of the dreary area and back to her plans for the day. She did make a mental note to ask them about the possible Doxy issue later though. Perhaps Silas and Sebastian would have more to add to Charles’ viewpoint.

The Gryffindor Chaser didn't seem bothered at all by Lycus' barrage of complaints. Which, of course, only irritated him further, but Lycus didn't think it was the right time to make a scene. He did tally a negative point though, and would pay back this insult during a Quidditch match. Soon, his female companion arrived, a girl with black, curly hair whose name Lycus also didn't recall. Oh joy, two useless mudbloods hanging out together. He rolled his eyes when she pointed out his fault in the incident. A Malfoy is never in the wrong, so he simply ignored what she said. When she turned around and reprimand her friend though, that really satisfied the pettiness sitting in his ribcage, and his lips twitched up to a small smirk.

Wait — she was the other Chaser in Gryffindor House, wasn't she? Gosh, wasn't her name some kind of flower . . .

Before he could bow out and leave the pair of them alone, the girl grabbed his hand and cast a healing spell. She did it so quickly that he barely managed to yelp before she was already finished. He looked at his smooth palm with some admiration. That spell was a solid one, as the skin had all reconnected with no scarring, and there was only some left over blood that could be wiped away easily.

What little good faith he had toward her immediately dissipated when she insulted his capabilities. He knew how to cast Episky! His current wand was just a temperamental little shit! But Lycus swallowed down those words — he hadn't survived on lies for this long by blurting out every single one of his thoughts, thank you very much. He only clicked his tongue in response.

Lycus hadn't wanted to team up with Gryffindors of all people, but he had to admit that the chance of him finding that strange, elusive thief was near zero by himself. At this point, he had grown curious enough to forgo the usual inter-house enmity. Reluctantly agreeing with the idea to split up and then regroup later, Lycus headed right and meandered through the crisscrossing alleyways. He only asked one or two people about the thief, because the other bystanders looked way too sketchy — this was one of those moments when being a Malfoy was somewhat disadvantageous, as his powerful name was attractive to the wrong kind of wizards as well. He tensed at the leers sent his way, and when he realized a couple of dangerous-looking wizards were following him, he decided to head back to regroup with the Gryffindors. Had he accidentally wandered down Knockturn Alley? Hopefully not.

When the Gryffindors sent him questioning glances, he merely shook his head to signify that he hadn't found anything useful.

And then, they found the purse.

Not the thief, mind you, just the purse, because apparently that stupid man literally just gave away the thing he set out to steal. Lycus briefly inspected the purse and found that it appeared to still have most of its contents.

"What was even stolen?" he wondered aloud after he took a gold bracelet out for the Gryffindors to see. "He didn't take the jewelry or the galleon coins."

Lycus didn't care to take the purse with him from the poor lookalike — he knew the owner was probably anxious to get it back, but surely one of the Gryffindor would take it, kindhearted idiots as they were. The three of them quickly follow the lead. The alleyways merged back into a larger road, and Lycus struggled to spot the culprit. He cursed under his breath.

"Wait — " He raised his arm to stop the other two from moving, then pointed at a street corner between a clock store and a cafe. "There. That's him!" he spoke lowly, afraid that the man would hear him. They were in a lousy, crowded path, but the thief was so slippery that Lycus wanted to be as careful as possible. The two Gryffindors seemed to agree, and they pushed their way through the throng of people to quickly reach the thief. At first, Lycus thought they'd lost the man again, as the alleyway was empty. But soon they overheard a hushed conversation between the thief and someone else.

Lycus quickly hid behind a protruding bay window and cast a Disillusionment charm on the three of them. See? He could do spells!

In front of the thief stood a stranger cloaked so heavily and thoroughly in black leather that it was difficult to even tell the species. That could be a vampire or a quarter-giant for all he knew.

"Your lead was right," the thief said. "She had a letter. And this."

A letter? It appeared that woman perhaps wasn't as clueless as she appeared. She certainly had been carrying something of great importance, and the panic rose not because she was the normal useless victim, but because she knew she'd lost these things. Lycus craned his neck to catch sight of what the thief was showing beside the letter.

"What is it . . . " he mumbled, though with how closely the three of them were standing together, there was no doubt the Gryffindors heard as well.

MENTIONS: everyone in the group.

Saira has no desire to continue to listen to the horrible woman speak. Despite the arduous journey, the bird led them on, she was content to end this journey here. Upon the woman's attempt to reach for her wand, Saira swiftly drew her own, positioning herself in front of the students as Sophia engaged the woman. Maintaining silence, Saira remained vigilant, her gaze assessing any potential threats toward the students. She trusted Sophia's capability to handle the situation, or at least provide a window for the students to flee.

With her arms crossed and wand secured beneath it, the professor observed the woman as she hastily ran through her options. Despite the gesture of reaching for her wand, the woman opted to veer away from violence. While Saira discerned the decision with the use of legilimency, Saira’s own thoughts raced incessantly, failing to alleviate the tension coursing through her. Familiar with the capricious nature of thoughts, someone could always change their mind. It took only milliseconds for a human to decide on an action.

"Fine. Take the bloody owl! It isn't worth the trouble!" She snaps. "Now, get out!" With a flutter, Harold landed on her shoulder. Saira swiftly turned, beaming down at the students and theatrically clasping her hands. "Well, that concludes our little adventure, students. Now let’s head out.” With a matter-of-fact tone, she hurriedly ushered them out of the premises, casting a glance backward to ensure Sophia followed. Despite feeling drained, this wasn't how she envisioned spending her final day of freedom.

As the group congregated, Saira released a heavy sigh, arms still folded. "She was quite unpleasant, wasn't she?" She affectionately scratched under the owl's chin before gently lifting him with both hands. "So, who shall take in our new friend Harold? My dear Beedie would be less than thrilled to share her space." Chuckling, she felt a sudden yearning to see her cat but pushed the sentiment aside, focusing on Vijay and Ophelia, waggling her eyebrows. "Shall I make the choice then?" A smile brightened her face as Harold squirmed in her grasp.

Rose had made the decision that it was best for both her and Keaton to stick together. She observed Lycus's departure, noting the group's unsurprising agreement with her suggestion. The two of them proceeded in silence, scanning the area for anyone suspicious. After a few minutes, Keaton noticed a man holding a purse, its contents still intact.

"Hey, you seem to recognize this. Some random guy threw it at me before he took off in that direction," the stranger stuttered out. Rose accepted the purse from him and thanked him quickly before following Lycus and Keaton. They seemed less cautious than Rose, who slung the purse over her shoulder, and briefly, she considered talking the group away from the whispering man. She felt unease prickling at her skin, especially since most of the valuables were untouched. Nonetheless, she stuck close to the boys as they tried to conceal themselves against a building—a rather futile attempt as the supposed thief spotted them almost immediately.

Without hesitation, Rose drew her wand and aimed it at the thief, distancing herself from Keaton and Lycus. The purse slipped from her shoulder to her arm, her gaze steady on the man before her. "Stealing from innocent people isn't very respectable," she stated firmly, briefly glancing at the boys before returning her attention to the thief. His threat of Obliviation didn't go unnoticed, deepening Rose's sense of dread.

"Who are you? An Auror?" Her eyes flickered to the fleeing figure, frowning as the man hesitated in his response. Somewhat reassured by his answer, she lowered her wand as he presented his Ministry badge to the group. While it wasn't unheard of for Aurors to be undercover, Rose remained cautious, refraining from inspecting the badge any closer. What would she do if it turned out to be false?

His question lingered in her mind as she weighed her options. Lying could result in unnecessary Obliviation for all of them. She had only heard the woman's scream and rushed to help; she hadn't seen anything. But she needed answers and had to play her cards right. "We... I saw something," she began cautiously. "But if you explain, I might be persuaded to keep quiet." Uncrossing her arms, she locked eyes with the Auror in front of her.

Despite his repeated mention of Obliviation, she stood her ground, listening attentively as he explained they were assisting what seemed to be a Grindelwald supporter. Rose grimaced and exchanged a glance with Keaton, silently reproaching him for involving her in this mess. With a sigh, she rubbed her temples, feeling a headache building.

Having satisfied her curiosity to some extent, she tucked her wand back into her boot and crossed her arms. "Well, since it appears we're not going to be Obliviated," she paused, glancing at Keaton and Lycus, "anything else?" Her impatience was palpable.

The woman stepped away from the shady man. It seemed his pushyness had triggered enough alarm bells for her to want to leave the situation. Silas moved quickly, and Sebastian followed, wand at the ready in case things got ugly. Whatever fight the dark wizard was itching for was quickly shut down by Silas's cast of a stunning charm. Sebastian relaxed, the tension from the situation subsiding now that the poor woman wasn't at risk of being cursed. The reprieve was short-lived, as commotion sounded from outside the store.

Sebastian found himself thanking Merlin. It seemed as though everyone had come out mostly unscathed. Except for the boy and mother, whose welcome to the wizarding world wasn't particularly warm. As Celeste walked them back to the civilized side of the shopping district, he hoped they would get a better impression.

Sebastian turned to his companions with a frown,
"While distaste for Muggles is nothing new, I'm surprised at how bold they were to pull such a stunt in broad daylight."

Charles sighed.
"The crowds made them bold, I imagine. Harder to keep an on things with so many people."

Still, Sebastian's stomach soured at the notion. Having grown up in a household where blood purity was something to take pride in, he was no stranger to the ideology. Yet, luring a mother from the street inside a shop of dark objects to curse her... Even if everyone was busy shopping, someone could have seen, and thankfully someone did. The dark wizard's actions weren't just stupid and vile, but worrying.

"I've had enough adventure for today. Celeste mentioned more shopping, but I could go for a drink before jumping back into it. First round on me?"

There were two Kneazles. Thankfully between the three of them, they were able to convince them to come with. Leor shifted, growing their upper body into that of a linebacker, making perfect perches for each of them. For a moment, one found their curls fascinating, tugging and chewing on them as they left Gambol and Japes.
~
Having learned the reason for their tasks, Leor couldn’t help but exclaim, “I can’t believe they’re selling these. Kneazles are perfect,” their hands went up to pet both of them, “But an acromantula?! Bowtruckles? Mark my words, we’re gonna end up with a student with your spider friend, Antonio.” Then they looked at Jesper, “Don’t let it be you.

They were quite willing to go on, but then a commotion brought their attention to their next prey. Leor couldn’t help but grin at the other professor’s excitement and, pulling their own wand out, they followed him in the crowd, the student with them. Of course, the niffler (who but a thief would even buy a niffler?) had chosen an expensive store that Leor would never have been seen in. In any form. You had to act rich too, and Leor wasn’t good at pretending to have a stick up their ass.

Still, they followed Antonio in, knowing he’d must have seen the creature, or at least intuited that it was in there. The woman in there was well practiced with her stick, her eyes sneering and her tone managing to make them sound like dirt on her shoe she was about to vanish. At the sight of the creature, her scream shifted into a wail, obviously as irritating to the niffler as it was to them. About to tell them to shut up, Antonio was quicker with his wand. The woman was so much better silenced. “Besides, plates this expensive should have an unbreakable charm on them. You’re selling shitty goods.

Then Leor had to catch the Kneazles as they tried to launch themselves off their shoulders and get the niffler. Looping their arms around them, so that their hands touched their head, they built more muscle to hold them in place. “No Niffler for you two. You don’t know where it’s been.

As they watched Antonio tickle the Niffler, they added, “Wherever it was, it’s been busy.” It took a good minute for the creature to empty out, but Leor had their hands full calming the Kneazles. They shifted their face to an approximation of Ruth’s, then began to purr. It may have sounded close enough to humans, but they knew a Kneazle wouldn’t fall for it. What it did was surprise the two out of fighting, turning to look at them instead. Reverting back they spoke again, “Thank you. Now, we only have one of your friends.” They laughed at their disagreeing expressions. “We only have Bowtruckles left. Then you get to go home.” The two didn’t look any happier about that, but Leor followed Antonio in his great escape out of the fancy shop.

Even the Kneazles were aware Bowtruckles would look for trees, so once the group came upon a greenhouse attached to the herbology/potions store, they knew it was their best place to check. Leor, knowing human greed, spoke up. “We can’t tell them we have bowtruckles to find. They’ll claim they always had them, and we can’t prove these bowtruckles are the Menagerie’s.” A grin started to form on their face, their curls bouncing and enticing the Kneazles further. “I say we sneak in. Don’t worry; I have a plan.

If you two will help?” They asked each of the Kneazles, smile widening at their intrigued look.”Let’s play a version of hide and seek. We don’t want the owner to come in, so you’ll have to be quiet and not break anything. You pretend to hide from us, but if you see the bowtruckles, let us know.

Turning to the human pair, Leor continued. “The three of us will be officially looking for the kneazles, if the owner comes back.” Then they looked at Antonio. “That’s on you. I’m shit at lying. And we can’t make the kid do it.

Here they looked at Jesper. “I suppose this is a lesson in “needs must.” We aren’t doing anything wrong: we’re just preventing a negative outcome.” They pursed their lips, then added, “Authority like him,” they jabbed their thumb at Antonio “Helps, so if you encounter a “needs must” situation at Hogwarts, try and find a professor or prefect to help. My door’s always open.

With a sharp nod, they walked forward to the door. Pulling out their wand, they felt for the magic covering it. It wasn’t a ward, thankfully, merely a spell locking the door. It would take a spell stronger than a basic alohomora, but Leor’s adventures exploring Hogwarts were coming in handy today. Beckoning the student, they showed him the wand movement. “I’ll cast, just in case, but it’s a handy spell to know.” With that, they cast the stronger spell, then pushed open the door.

Immediately the two Kneazles launched from their shoulders, darting through the foliage. Some were obviously magical. “I hope you two are smart enough to avoid those.” They muttered, as they led the way into the warm moist air. They adjusted their shoulders to more fit their body once more, rotating them repeatedly to get used to the difference.

The three split up. Hopefully the kid was as interested in plants as he was creatures. Or at least smart enough to avoid the deadly ones. Leor edged away from some cactus type plant with boils instead of spines. Trees. The Bowtruckles would want a tree. At least, they were fairly sure.

The first tree they found was a club like one, the trunks ending in rounded edges. It wasn’t big, thankfully, but Leor knew better than to trust anything in the magical world. They levitated a fallen leaf over to the tree. Nothing happened, until it just barely touched the bark and then, “WHOMP!” Leor jumped as the trunk tore through their weak magic, smashing the thin leaf into the mulched ground around it. “Bloody hell.” They breathed out. They just knew this thing was going to get much bigger. Who would want a tree that tried to kill you?

But a bowtruckle, almost as tall as the tree itself came out, shaking its little limb in a strange imitation of a human. “Woah!” held up their palms. “I didn’t hurt it!” They didn’t bother pointing out, if they’d tried to touch it, they’d have had a broken hand at best. The creature wouldn’t care. “But this isn’t your tree is it?” They asked shrewdly. “That explosion at the shop was enough to blow you off yours, wasn’t it?” They offered their hand, but kept it out of range of the willow. “I’m here to take you back to your tree.” At the distrustful look, they added, “I swear on my magic.” They assumed the creature could feel the small pop too as their magic knotted into the vow, for it climbed up their arm, its little limbs leaving pin pricks until it settled inside their clothes. Now that was a weird sensation.

Any idea where your fellows are?” They watched one of the Kneazles dart by, weaving easily through the legs of the tables overburdened with plants. At its silence, they continued forward, looking for more trees. “You’re convincing the others.

A quiet meow, pitched not to carry, caught their ears. The intelligence of Kneazles always impressed them. Calling out, “Coming” at the same pitch, they weaved their way through the overgrowth. They ended up with a rash on their arm they couldn’t shift over, but otherwise came unscathed as they reached what they were pleased to see was a wiggentree. The Kneazle immediately bounded off, while Leor nudged the bulge in their shirt. “Anyone here?” Like a snake squirming free, the bowtruckles appeared from their collar. It made a chittering noise, one they’d have assumed were just shifting leaves if it weren’t so close. A moment passed, then another came out. It too climbed her arm and settled with the first, back under their clothes. Were they like bark? Leor wondered if they could grow their skin like bark--it’d ease the pin pricks and maybe the rash, but decided to first track the others.
~
That was almost as difficult to do as finding the bowtruckles themselves. The greenhouse was practically a maze. Leor wondered why they bothered locking out intruders when the plants would just police themselves. Finally finding first Jesper (who handled himself well, with a third bowtruckles to prove it), then one of the Kneazles, who Leor managed to catch with a springing lunge, their legs shifting to make the move. “You’ve done wonderfully. We’re almost done and then we can get back. Can you help us find your partner and the tall man?

The Kneazle pretended to think about it, licking its paws before turning away. Not knowing if it was actually leading them to either, Leor decided to follow it anyway. Thankfully, it seemed to want to get out of the greenhouse as much as they did, for it led them straight to Antonio who was talking to the fourth bowtruckle. It made a noise and suddenly the second Kneazle was tripping Leor up, making them stumble, though nothing more.

Let’s get out of here.

is cursing a man in broad daylight considered a crime

Keaton nodded as he took the card from the man before he disapparated on the spot. No doubt to report back to his bosses.

“Oh don't look at me like that Rose. I'm sorry I filled your day with a bit more excitement than you're accustomed to. Next time for sure we can pick out a nice book and be boring.” He mocked as he raised his right hand in a salute of one of the muggle clubs he was a member of as a child. “Scout's honor.”

Keaton had to admit being praised by an actual auror filled him with a feeling he hadn't really been able to describe. In the beginning of this misadventure all he wanted to do was stop a purse snatcher and now he was being told he had what it took to help people on a much larger scale.

It should've meant more but knowing that aurors and the wizarding community at large are content with allowing the second great war to be waged without stopping it had never sat well with the young Calum. Maybe in a few years he'd give them a call but if it required him to conform he was ok where he was.

Shoving his hands in his pockets Keaton felt the leftover money he had been given by the school to purchase his supplies for the year and an idea began to form in his head.

But I do owe you something for dragging you along. So how about a butterbeer and my sincerest apologies? My treat.” Keaton smirked as he turned his head back to Lycus’ direction “You're welcome to join as well unless you have better places to be?”

Admittedly under normal circumstances they'd be at each other's throats, but together they had done a good thing today albeit a misguided attempt at doing a good thing but a good thing nonetheless. The regularly scheduled animosity was postponed until tomorrow.

Ruth’s human was an idiot. “You can’t stay mad at me forever.” Perhaps, but she would not forget this. She’d thought she could let them leave, hunt on their own, but obviously that was not the case.

Listen, they’re not that bad.” Ruth watched as they lifted the conniving bowtruckle from the cup it was climbing into, likely interested in the tea leaves inside. They put it on their shoulder then switched the cups. Lady Sophia would not have to deal with roots in hers.

The Kneazle stretched on their window seat, her fur brushing the colored glass and turned around. She studied the sky through a purple pane, pressing her flattened nose against it. Though the bench was lower, to accommodate her size, she still couldn’t move without touching the cool surface. Just as she liked it. What she would have liked better is an intelligent human.

She felt the magic of a spell ripple over the tea set, keeping the leaves fresh and the pot hot. Leor’s shoes were loud as they walked over. Ruth sniffed, irritated.

Listen, we’re just holding off talking to Antonio until it’s been long enough that he won’t have any noble” Ruth agreed with the sneer, “ideas of returning him.” There was a pause, likely adjusting the leafy beast. “You can’t expect me to actually do that myself,” They insulted her. Badly enough the Kneazle turned her head around to hiss.

Leor’s sigh was relieved. “Good. They’re a person too. Even if we need a translator.” The bowtruckle made another noise, clearly able to understand them. You’d think the bond they’d made between the two would be enough. “What? We do! I need to get you back to your tree. Antonio will know how to find it.” The reminder of their idiocy made her hiss.

Ruth knew Leor reached to her for comfort without thought, but she still slinked away, jumping off the platform. With her tail high, she stalked across the room. Jumping up into her human’s usual armchair, she started to knead it. Let them sit somewhere else when Lady Sophia came.

Ruth…” For now, they stole the second armchair, tucking their hands beneath their legs. “Seriously, why are you so upset?” The Kneazle continued to knead the cushion, their claws catching in the fabric. She heard the bowtruckle make a noise. It clattered onto the table, somehow not disrupting the spell, and used it as a bridge to reach her. Curious, Ruth stopped, looking at the bowtruckle.

She knew it wasn’t to blame. No, her human had suggested the pact all on their own. They met its beady eyes. She could tell there was some intelligence in them, but it was unlike any she’d ever seen. It spoke. She understood not a word, but shifted back against the chair when it jumped toward her, instead of swiping it to the floor. Ah. It realized what her problem wasn’t with it. She shifted, making room for it before lying down.

Wait…” Oh look, it might have worked. Maybe her idiot can learn. “You aren’t mad at me for bringing him…” Come now, Ruth knew her human wasn’t hopeless. “Oh.

Leor sighed so heavily, they sagged over their legs, their hat falling to the floor. “The vow.” They said to their legs. Ruth meowed a confirmation. Breathing in deeply, they raised their head to look at their familiar. “I had to convince them to get out.” Its message apparently done, the bowtruckle transversed the table again, it jumped off, picked up the hat that was nearly its size, and then climbed the witch, replacing the hat. “I couldn’t have reached in and grabbed them even if I wanted to. My hand would have been broken.” Ruth made sure her expression showed she did not care. “I don’t know what I was thinking.” Obviously they weren’t. “It just felt right.

Ruth usually approved of Leor’s tendency to follow their magic. It was a shifting energy, constantly moving, but it usually led her true. Now she was curious. Standing, she followed the bowtruckle’s path, nimbly avoiding the china, the spell accepting her as a part of Leor. Landing heavily on her human’s lap, who had enough warning to lean back to accept her. Putting her paws on their shoulders, they sniffed intently at the bowtruckle on her shoulder. She froze. Ah. Leaning back, she met its beady eyes. Well then, she would have to get used to it. Meowing a warning, it had chosen, as was its right, but that meant it had to protect Leor. They obviously needed it. The bowtruckle chirped back, nodding in a strangely human way.

Content, Ruth jumped off of her witch’s lap, and headed to the door. With a meow, she warned of Lady Sophia’s knock. “Gotta get a translator.” Leor muttered as they rose to open the door.

T
W the mention of abuse:

The rhythmic clacking of the Hogwarts Express, as it sped towards the familiar grounds of the school was a soothing backdrop to Medea's thoughts. The past few days events had left a significant imprint on her mind (and body), and they were replaying themselves in her brain even if she preferred they didn't.

After her interview with Grace Fenner, which had been more enlightening and draining than she had anticipated, Medea had continued with her errands in Diagon Alley. The entire process had taken longer than planned, pushing back the rest of her schedule and leaving her to rush back to the Selwyn Manor just in time for dinner.

As she had hurriedly explained her delay to her father, the coupon for Florean Fortescue's had slipped from her pocket. For anyone else, it wouldn't have been an ordeal.

Not quite for her.

Damian's temper, already simmering from his perceived slight of her tardiness, flared violently. The coupon was just an excuse as anything was. Work, the news, someone else disagreeing with him. It all eventually led back to her.

"Would you have used this? Did you want someone to think we were impoverished?" He had hissed, his bourbon tainted breath warm and uncomfortable near her face. Both his hands held tight around her shoulders, holding her in a vice grip. She couldn't quite recall the last time he had ever reached for her out of kindness.

She didn't need her Leglimency to understand the smallness of his fears. They were written plainly as always. He may have been larger and stronger than her, but he was a weak man. His own failings were projected unfairly onto her, as always.

"No, Father. I'm sorry." It was the same familiar monotonous response she always gave.

One. More. Year.
----
Now, safely distanced from her home, Medea sat quietly in the train compartment. She was dressed rather plainly, in a soft, dove-gray sweater with long sleeves covering the bruises on her shoulders, and her school robes decorated with the bright "Head Girl" pin. It had been the highlight of her summer to receive it.

Just as quickly as she had got on, she took out a rather newly purchased, yet old book. "History of Magic" by Bathilda Bagshot, she rested it on her lap and opened it up to begin a bit of reading before the journey would start. She had quite a heavy workload for the year. Charms, History of Magic, Transfiguration, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts and...

Her cheeks flushed and she straightened her back as if she was in class already. Astronomy. She had remained just as dedicated to the subject since she first began her lessons. Before her thoughts could stray too much, her time to her self was interrupted.

Others had joined her compartment, likely through necessity rather than choice. She had been quick to find one to herself and be one of the first on the train. They likely were not as meticulous when it came to being on time, so they would be stuck with her. She breathed in slowly as they entered, clearing her thoughts to keep the ever curious part of herself at bay. But she knew them. Lycus Malfoy. Jesper Pearce. Even Penelope. A rather odd group. Every single one of them was from a different house as well, so she wondered if any really knew one another.

Still, she was nothing if not polite. She had lifted her head to greet every single one that wandered in, even Lycus , before she continued her reading, thumbing page after page in silence.

It would be a long train ride.

Sitting at her vanity, Noémie applies the last of her blush and stares at herself in the mirror. It is first morning of September and it occurs to her that this will be the last time she ever prepares for the Hogwarts Express train. She is in her final year, and by the time another September comes around Noémie will be a full-fledged witch. Her days as a first year feel so far away now. Her lips slip into a frown at the thought. The passage of time can be truly unsettling, she realizes.

Noémie stands in the manor entryway and wishes her mother goodbye. Her parents stopped accompanying her to King's Cross Station last year. In truth, she is grateful for the time alone. A house elf tucks her trunk into the family's Muggle vehicle as she slides into the passenger seat. Noémie watches her house disappear through the side mirror. The car takes her into London and drops her off as close as it can manage. From there, she walks on foot into the station and towards Platform 9¾.

Glancing around, she notes that no Muggles rushing by will notice as thing as she walks through the barrier with ease. The other side is bustling with life. Mothers weeping as they kiss their first years goodbye, fathers offering their older sons advice on how to win their next Quidditch match. Noémie ignores the onslaught of noise to the best of her ability. She hands her trunk off to a pullman and brings Chloé's crate along with her onto the train. The poor cat can not stomach riding in the back.

Noémie steps into the first empty compartment and slides the door behind her. Setting the crate on the ground, she releases Chloé before taking a seat. The cat jumps into her lap almost instantly. The next several minutes pass quickly as the remaining students board the train. Noémie is soon accompanied by Ophelia, Poppy, and then Briar. All from different houses, but the girls have walked the same hall for years. It is hard not to meet everyone in your year after so many classes and school events.

The Hogwarts Express train departs the station at exactly 11 o'clock. Not long after, the trolley arrives and an old woman knocks on their compartment door. "Can I get you girls anything?"

"I'll take two Sugar Quills, please,"
Noémie answers, glancing over the others until her eyes fall on Ophelia.
"Feel free to order something, ladies."
Her lips curl into a smile as gives the Hufflepuff a quick wink.
"My treat."

After spending the summer months in his cottage, Charles is happy to be back at Hogwarts for a new school year. The castle is much larger and more suitable for a man of his stature. He is thankful for the school's house elves for clearing out his chambers before his arrival. Charles grimaces at the thought of the thick layer of dust they must have swept up. The castle is old, attracting dust and cobwebs like moth to a flame. He will be undoubtedly using a number of charms to clear out his classroom.

Cleanliness aside, he is truly looking forward to the new term. The only thing bothering him is his own worries over his first year as Head of House for Hufflepuff. It is a position he is incredibly grateful and honored to have been chosen for. Charles wants to help his house, and all of his students. He just can't help but feel like a bit of an imposter. Is he the right choice for the role? Charles isn't sure he can confidently answer that question. He supposes only time will tell. If he fails to meet standards, he will step down for the good of his students.

Charles sighs and decides it's best not to dwell on it for now. Looking over at the grandfather clock in his chambers, he realizes It is nearly half past 11 o'clock now. He shoots up from his arm chair and reaches for his jacket. Charles agreed to help Antonio prepare his classroom and enclosures for the semester. He can only imagine the state they must be in. He is no expert on magical creatures, but Charles knows they are a wild and messy bunch. It is endearing how much Antonio loves them.

Departing from his chambers, Charles makes quick work of heading for the Care of Magical Creatures classroom. He knocks on the door upon arriving and pokes his head inside. Spotting the Slytherin standing in the back, he flashes the professor a charming smile.

"Good morning, Antonio,"
Charles greets the man, crossing his arms as he leans against the doorframe.
"Ready to tackle the day? I'm happy to help for as long as you need. The Charms classroom will be a breeze in comparison."
He laughs and glances back over his shoulder.
"Celeste! It's good to see you again."

Alone on the platform, Rose felt a deep sadness echoing within her. Just a year ago, she and her father would stand there, meticulously reviewing her extensive list of school supplies for Hogwarts. They'd joke and laugh to keep trouble at bay, avoiding the Gryffindors her father had a particular disdain for from his own time at Hogwarts. Promises of sending each other owls, empty threats of sending howlers if she forgot to send her letters, happy memories tainted by her father's betrayal.

But now, she stood alone, mentally going through her checklist once again. Hidden beneath her luggage were unopened letters from her father tied with twine, weighing heavily on her mind. She cherished her father deeply, but his betrayal had wounded her profoundly, more so than she dared to acknowledge. This last year at Hogwarts was not what she had envisioned; it was shrouded in uncertainty.

The loss of two parents, the ticking timer above her head, and the looming threat of her future eroded her sense of self. The words of Hugo Bulstrode, the Auror they had encountered, struck a chord of anxiety within her. With her future slipping away, she was still no closer to finding a cure for the curse. Yet, she refused to surrender hope; there had to be a way to rid herself of the blood curse and free her family from the maledictus that plagued them.

Claiming a seat by the window, Rose was the first to settle into the train compartment. As others joined her, she greeted them with polite but distant smiles. Though she recognized familiar faces from her years at Hogwarts, she had no desire for interaction. Her mind weighed down by thoughts, she sought solace in a black leather-bound diary and ink pen, finding refuge in writing.

As the train departed, she channeled her thoughts, finding clarity amidst the passing scenery beyond the window.

Ophelia.

At King’s Cross, the usual collection of parting families swirled around the seventeen year old. She edged toward Platform 9 ¾, her father and sister flanking her, the clamor of the station a distant buzz against their more intimate farewell.

Her father enveloped her in an embrace, his arms squeezing her. "Write to us," he whispered into her hair. Ophelia could have sworn she heard a sniffle along with the demand.

Beside them, Phoebe chuckled, "Dad, let her breathe. She'll miss the train." The gentle giant of a man pulled back, dusting himself off and giving his youngest a nod as Phoebe leaned down to give her own goodbye. "Go on, love before the old man starts causing a fuss". She leaned in, lips brushing Ophelia's cheek in a swift peck.

It was all she could do to keep her own tears from forming. She was an adult in the eyes of the wizarding world, but she was still treated as the baby of the family. She was more than sure that would never change.

With a final squeeze from her father and an encouraging smile from Phoebe, Ophelia wheeled her trolley towards the barrier. She pushed through, the sounds of the station filling up her ears.

"C'mon then, Nibs" she murmured to the rather affectionate Siamese mewing happily in her carrier, " lets see if we can find a nice spot before they fill up."

Year after year, securing a seat was a challenge. Despite growing up alongside her older classmates, Ophelia’s shyness persisted in unknown company. She first sought out familiar faces, hoping for the comfort of friends for the ride, but found those compartments already full.

The only available space was beside Noemie Lestrange, the Slytherin Head Girl. Ophelia respected lineage less than some, but she couldn’t deny the slight intimidation she felt around purebloods, especially someone as prominent as Noemie.

With a small, nervous chuckle, Ophelia greeted her and settled by the window. Nibbles, excited by the surroundings, mewed more insistently. Ophelia’s gaze drifted to the sleek black cat curled in Noemie’s lap—charming and composed, much like its owner. She knew Nibs all too well; the Siamese was not one to shy away from making new friends, regardless of how the other cat might react.

"Just wait a little bit," Ophelia soothed, patting the carrier gently.

Soon, the two remaining seats snapped up. Briar and Poppy, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw members. Ophelia offered a quick smile and nod to each newcomer, then returned her eyes to the scenery slipping past outside. None of the girls had any negative history with one another , at least not with herself, so she didn't anticipate a rough ride in the least. That was comforting.

Just as Ophelia was mustering up the courage to speak, the familiar grandmotherly lady appeared with a trolley filled with treats.

Ophelia's cheeks warmed with a soft blush as Noémie’s offer hung in the air. Could it be a sincere gesture, or did Noémie somehow know of her family's modest means? The question stirred uncomfortably in her mind. Probably overthinking more than likely.

Before she could delve deeper into her suspicions, her stomach betrayed her with a timely grumble, pulling her back to the moment. Self-consciously, she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and managed a hesitant smile. "Just a pumpkin pasty please, thank you...and thank you as well," she murmured, addressing both the trolley witch and Noémie.

"Did..did you all have a good summer?" She managed to stammer out, addressing the group..

As the last gasp of steam bellowed from the scarlet behemoth alerting students and parents that the time for departure was coming Keaton couldn't help but feel a pang in his chest as he stared at the families saying their final goodbyes.

He had asked his parents not to come this time for their own safety. With the anti-muggle sentiment at an all time high he thought it was better to not put them in any unnecessary danger. Helena didn't share his fears.

“If you think I'm afraid of a bunch of loons in bathrobes then you don't know me at all.”

The memory brought a small smile to his lips as he heard the final horn and the train began to gain momentum towards its destination.

He had not told his mother or anyone for that matter what had happened that day at Diagon Alley and to his credit it seemed Hugo Bulstrode had also managed to keep any mention of them out of the report despite several eyewitnesses. It said a lot about journalism that Keaton wasn't entirely sure he wanted to think too hard about.

Keaton smiled as he looked out to the hallway and saw that the halls were now being filled with people. It was dangerously close to being time for him to do his rounds. He'd give it another hour before he blessed his classmates with his presence. He could spare a few minutes catching up on some of the things he's forgotten.

As he opened his new potions book the compartment door opened with several familiar faces looming in the doorway.

“If you're looking for an invitation I won't be much help, but I'd recommend taking a seat before someone else does.” Keaton smiled. “And if any of you are good at potions I could really use the help.”

Another year, another Welcome Feast. It also meant, another year Silas and his colleagues have tea. The Astrologer didn't know when the tradition started, but, like any well-raised Englishman, he'd never turn down his chance at tea. With biscuits in tow, Silas caught eye of Sebastian, who seemed to be on his way to the same destination.

Silas picked up the pace until he was beside Sebastian, greeting him with a small smile, "Ah, hello Professor. I never got to apologize for what happened the other day." He thought for a moment, knowing he should be careful with his words when on school grounds, "I was actually hoping to talk to you more about it, with Salman and Allegro."

Sebastian looks towards Silas a soft greeting falling past his lips, "I see…I was meaning to speak with you more about it. I have concerns, but I worry they may be an overreaction due to my,” he paused as if the words were bitter, ”upbringing. Conferring with Leor and Allegro would be optimal."

As Silas recounted the events in his mind, his polite smile lowered into a thin line. The boy was so close to danger; His mother close to losing him. No one ever talks about how easy it is to lose everything. Silas cleared his throat, "No, I don't think it an overreaction. These are dangerous times. It isn't uncommon to think of the worst case scenario."

As the pair approached Leor's door, Silas hesitated, checking the muggle watch his father gifted him years ago. Blue eyes closed in defeat.

They were late. Surely both he and Sebastian would be getting an earful. "Do you think they'll spare us this time? Maybe my news will distract them." He hoped, practically thinking out loud at this point.

With a sigh Sebastian looked towards the door, if it was just Leor they could get away with it, but Professor Allegro was a different story. For a second he felt like a student again. “Shouldn’t be too bad, Professor Allegro has had a soft spot for me since I was a 2nd year,” he said hoping he was right. The Astronomy professor couldn't help the small puff of a laugh that fell from his lips. It seemed Professor Allegro always had a soft spot for her more studious pupils.

Giving two polite knocks, Silas could hear the voices of his fellow professors suddenly stop, followed by the sound of Leor, who opened the door for both of the Professors.

"Apologies for our tardiness. We got caught up in conversation, I'm afraid." Polite and professional as ever, Silas brushed his free hand along his deep navy robes, sheepishly holding out his pack of biscuits in the other, "Perhaps biscuits will lessen the blow?"

Celeste's arrival back at Hogwarts was a whirlwind of excitement and busy work. With it only being her fourth beginning of the year return to the grounds since becoming a professor, where she was sure she had been confident in her meticulously laid out plans from the moment of her arrival, she hadn't thought of one thing: friends. Well, she supposed the other professors would consider her more of a close acquaintance. Nonetheless there had been enough pleasantries and catching up that she hadn’t expected upon her arrival that her plans were very swiftly scrapped to be returned to later. Especially when she’d been invited to help Antonio with getting the outside classroom freshened up and prepared for both students and beasts.

During her years as a student she’d never had much interest in the subject of magical creatures. She’d done well enough to learn about those that she would need to know, but had never imagined the need to learn about those that she had no chance of running into unsupervised. Since her arrival back as a professor though, she was always amazed by how interesting Antonio made each creature seem. Perhaps it was the practicals of how their subject interwove together, but every time Antonio introduced her to a new creature in the greenhouses, she couldn’t help but want to learn more about them. She was very confident that Antonio was a wonderful professor if even she was interested in the subject he cared so much for. So the invitation to help was both exciting not only because it was endearing that she was invited to help, but it would also give her some insight into what creatures she might get a visit from later in the year.

Her room was already starting to come together, including her personal Venomous Tentacula from home that had started teething before she had arrived. She’d stayed up late making sure everything was where she wanted it to be, looking to be quite professional, but had awoken early in her excitement for the day's events. She didn’t want to come off as too eager to help though but didn’t want to arrive too late, so she puttered around the room aimlessly, rearranging a few things that she knew she was going to end up changing back later before she made her way towards Antonio’s classroom to meet up with the others. Before she left though, she grabbed the basket of potions she’d spent the last few days brewing for her fellow professors since her discussion with Charles in Knockturn Alley. What had been her attempt at casual conversation about the necessity of having Doxycide around in the case of a Doxy infestation on the grounds had turned into an actual concern considering that an infestation in Hogwarts would truly be an issue with how poisonous their venom was. Her concern had resulted in her anxiously using her own personal plants to brew enough potions that each professor could have one on hand in the chance of a sighting of one of the creatures.

The bottles clanked lightly against each other as she made her way to the classroom, alerting those around her that she was near. Not that she was trying to sneak up on anyone, but any looks she received caused her to shove her hand into the basket and clutch at the bottles to make them more quiet. As she neared her destination, she could make out Charles’ figure in the doorway and couldn’t help but feel relieved that she wasn’t the first to arrive, though she should have known that Charles would reliably always take that honor. She looked up at him, smiling at his greeting. “A pleasure to see you again too, Charles,” she greeted before peering past him to see Antonio in the classroom. “Antonio, I hope your summer was well.” She shifted and quickly shoved her hand into the basket as the bottles clanked quietly with the movement, feeling suddenly very silly about the contents.

Staying at Hogwarts over the summer had its benefits, one of which happened to be light packing for the train ride back since he could leave most of his things back at the school. Unfortunately, one of the downsides was having to give up his temporary home for a week or two before the start of the school year so the returning professors and staff could have adequate time to prepare their lessons and surprises for the school year without spoiling or giving advantages to any student – himself included.

Finding a location to stay for a couple of weeks had fortunately been a little easier than he thought so he wouldn’t have to return home to face his family, so overall the cons of staying at the school were worth it. Most of his belongings fit perfectly into one small bag that he carried with him, firmly clasped in his hand as he nervously pushed his way through the crowd on Platform 9 ¾. He barely enjoyed interacting with individuals, much less large groups of people shoving and frantically packing their things away as they prepared to leave for the summer.

He had always chosen to arrive early to avoid most of the later crowd and this time was no different, though his body froze as he stepped onto the train, visions flooding his head of an eagle, a snake, a lion, and a badger all closed tight in a cage, pressing their backs against their respective corners as they faced toward the middle.

”Watch it-!”

A firm shove of a shoulder and a venomous tone snapped him out of his vision, his body lurching forward as the crowd started to accumulate on the platform and slowly push its way around him into the train. Panic set in and he tried to press into the crowd, glancing left and right for an open compartment until he finally found one and quickly slid inside, closing the door behind him.

At last. He was finally-

His moment of relief was short lived as he heard the familiar sounds of pen scratches on paper, his head turning to see Rose tucked away in a corner of the compartment, head only lifting as he entered to give him a glazed smile before returning to her pages.

”Ah right, sorry! I uh-“
His voice stuttered a bit as he scrambled aimlessly around the cabin for a moment before realizing the situation had grown much too awkward for him to simply just leave as if these compartments weren’t meant to hold multiple students at a time anyway.
”I’ll just uh… I’ll join you and sit, yeah,”
he offered again, though at this point he was certain he was most likely being more of a disturbance than anything to the words she etched down in the leatherbound book.

He wasn’t the only student that had a similar idea, however. It wasn’t long before Markus and Cosette both arrived as well, joining the two of them to fill out their cabin as the train finally began to slowly pick up speed toward their home for the next several months. For a moment he sat silent, uncomfortably glancing up at the opposite corner of the room with occasional glances out the window while the only sounds that reverberated off the walls were the etches of Rose’s pin and the clanking of the train’s wheels against the metal rails in the tracks. Being shoved into new social situations always took him time to warm up, especially when each of them were all fairly different, even to the point of them all being in different hou-

Vijay could feel his body perk up as the vision he had before he stepped onto the train all began to make sense. An eagle, a badger, a lion, and a snake all backed into their respective corners of a cage – it looked a lot like the situation he currently found himself in. Even just the realization that his Inner Eye hadn’t decided to make him completely crazy as of late with his bizarre visions was a relief, his body easing up as he relaxed and finally spoke up without thinking.

”You guys ever have that feeling of DeJa’Vu?”
The words that rolled out of his mouth seemed to fall clumsily to the floor, his eyes widening a bit as he realized how random the statement actually was.
”Because! Because I’m just… I’m having one of those feelings, you know? Hahah, just feel like I’ve seen this all before.”
Shut up. Stop talking. They already think you’re nuts.
”So uh… Anyone have any big plans for the school year?
You haven’t stopped! You keep going, why are you still talking?
”I mean, it’s our last year after all so I know some people have some big plans. I’m still figuring mine out but I’d love to hear yours!”
He froze like a deer in headlights, glancing around at them hoping he didn’t seem too frantic.
”I heard that one guy was planning to try and destroy the sorting hat… Some long term plan of revenge before graduating after he claims he was sorted into the wrong house, hahah…”
He added the last part for good measure, hoping the story would maybe direct them away from the nervous sweat that was about to form on his forehead.

The train whistled and Poppy turned from her parents. She didn’t have long, but she wasn’t in a hurry. Finding her friends was something that could wait till they arrived at Hogwarts, and seating hardly mattered as long as she didn’t get stuck with a bunch of rowdy first years. Turning back towards her parents, she smiled, hoping to ease the look of sadness from their aging faces.

It hadn’t gotten any easier, and while Poppy had gotten used to her parents’ overly doting nature, she couldn’t help but worry about the future. They hardly had it in them to part from their daughter on the platform. How would they feel when she ultimately leaves the nest?

There was no question on if Birdie and James Lovelear adored their child. Their supportive nature has nurtured their daughter into the confident young woman she is. Though their care could be suffocating, a natural result of being an only child in a household that wanted many.

A first-year squeezed by, calling out a goodbye to their mother over their shoulder. Birdie sighed, her fingers smoothing down Poppy’s hair affectionately. “I remember the first time we brought you here. You were so brave, even with tears in your eyes, you were the one assuring us it would be okay. I could have sworn you would be a Gryffindor like me, but I should have known you’d follow in your father’s footsteps.” Birdie sniffled, tears pooling in her eyes.

“Mum...”
Poppy said softly, not wanting her parents to cause a scene.

“I know. I’m just going to miss you.”

“We both will,”
James added, “We’re both so proud of you, our little Poppy, entering her final year at Hogwarts.”

The train whistled again, and Poppy knew her time was up.
“I have to go. I still have to get Asa situated.”
Her parents nodded sadly, pulling her into a hug. Pulling away, Poppy smiled,
“I promise to write you soon, okay? I’ll miss you both.”

It was easy enough to handle Asa. He never minded the trip to Hogwarts as long as he got a few treats. Sticking her fingers through the cage, she pet his feathers, smiling as he leaned into her.
“Be good,”
she told him, handing him off to the attendant.

Poppy worried her lip as she moved through the train. She hadn’t felt she had taken too long to board, but with each full compartment she passed, she found the reality of making the journey with a bunch of first years more likely.

She thanked Merlin when she found one only partially filled, and with girls from her year. Taking a seat, she thumbed through her bag for her journal. Not long after Briar, another girl in their year joined them.

Poppy would have missed the trolley lady if it weren’t for Noémie, a Slytherin girl whom Poppy shared a few classes and clubs with, offering to buy them all treats. The other girl in the compartment, Ophelia, if Poppy remembered correctly, ordered a pumpkin pasty.

“If it’s no trouble, I’d like a small bag of Jelly Slugs,”
Poppy said gently, making a mental note to do something nice for Noémie later. Her parents’ words of repaying kindness with kindness rang clear in her head.

“Did..did you all have a good summer?” Ophelia asked.

“Mine was alright, I mostly spent it at home, but it was a pleasant break,”
Poppy said, her summers weren’t very eventful, the few friends she had always been busy with their own things.
“I’m honestly glad to be back. Can’t wait for Quidditch to start up again. How was your summer? Do anything fun?”

Moving through her chambers, which resembled a calculated chaotic mess, she swiftly collected books from the side of her desk. The cozy room was clearly lived-in, with a small cluttered round table tucked away in the corner beneath a grand window. Heaving a sigh, she dropped the large stack of books on the edge of the wooden desk with a heavy thud. Scribbled-on papers and nearly empty ink wells were scattered about, some useless, some invaluable for her teaching lessons. Saira gathered the parchments in one swoop, stacking them on one side of the desk. "A problem for future Saira," she noted to herself.

Tucking a stray hair behind her ear, she checked her wrist for the time; the tiny golden hand indicated she had ten minutes until her meeting with the other professors. As she leaned against the desk, a raspy meow caught her attention, as Beedie rubbed his head against her leg. Picking up the hairless cat in her arms, she scratched underneath his chin, causing his purring to grow extraordinarily loud. Setting him down on the desk, she moved away, earning another loud raspy meow of protest.

Leaving her chambers, she moved through the corridors, the paintings greeting her in a familiar fashion. Life seemed to brighten the castle, its usual quiet halls now bursting with both familiar and new faces. The sound of life created a sense of buzzing excitement underneath her skin; the students would be arriving soon. While Saira enjoyed her free time, she found herself utterly bored when the students left for the summer. Taking up a permanent residence within Hogwarts, she often spent most of her summer in the expansive library, planning out her lessons for the upcoming year.

Yet, lesson planning didn’t take more than a few weeks for Saira. Summer always left her with too much time on her hands. So when Antonio asked for help, she nearly jumped at the chance. She was excited to see the other professors and hear what they had been up to during their summers. Upon arriving at the classroom, it seemed she arrived shortly after Celeste who greeted the two other professors in the room. Peeking her head in, arms tucked behind her back, she welcomed the group with a wide smile.

“Hello everyone,” she said, stepping through the doorway. She knew very little about the study of magical creatures or the animals themselves, but she couldn’t deny it was a subject that always interested her. Saira found herself looking into the basket in Celeste’s arms with a curious look. “You’ve made potions Celeste?” she said, clasping her hands together excitedly. “Ah, tell us what you’ve brought!” The messy bun on top of her head bounced with her as she nodded her head, awaiting Celeste's answer.

Pen.

As Pen stood on the platform of King's Cross Station, her trunk by her side and Plum the owl, perched on top, she couldn't help but feel conflicted. The excitement of returning to Hogwarts for her seventh and final year was very much clear, but it was mingling with the apprehension of what lay beyond the familiar stone walls of the castle. Her home.

Unlike many of her classmates, Pen didn't have the luxury of a family to see her off or bid her farewell. It didn't sadden her, not anymore. There were much more important things to worry about . Particularly the very fact that this would be the last time she'd be considered a child once the school year was over and done with.

There were surely a few Professors that would disagree she was 'ready" for life as an adult. Perhaps she loved to do the occasional prank and maybe she let her emotions get the best of her, ending in some fights. But, she had an opportunity this year to do a bit better.

Possibly.

As the waifish girl boarded the Hogwarts Express, she let out a stream of healthy curses under her breath. The train was packed as usual, and she was a bit later to the party than she had expected to be.

"I can't wait to Apparate properly, " she hissed, bumping shoulders with a few younger students and giving a glare as she walked down the aisle. Splinching and all, she'd take the risk in order to get to where she needed to be significantly quicker. And avoid idiots who couldn't watch where they were going.

Finally, she stumbled upon a compartment that seemed almost empty, save for one occupant. Pen hesitated for a moment, considering her options, before reluctantly pushing the door open and stepping inside.

Medea Selwyn, with her perfectly groomed appearance and air of superiority, greeted Pen with little more than a an obligatory nod before returning to her own thoughts.

Of course. A hoity toity pureblood couldn't bother to give an actual hello. She raised an eyebrow and opened her mouth before quickly clamping it shut. Didn't she say this year would be different?

Thankfully, Jesper, a Hufflepuff, had been close behind so she wouldn't quite be alone with the girl. But it also meant she was forced to sit whether she wanted to or not.

Internally admitting defeat, Pen collapsed onto the opposite seat, avoiding eye contact for the most part. She would have rather been crammed in a compartment with first years.

Alright, maybe not quite that but still. She'd feel less out of place at least. She managed a glance in Jesper's direction, deciding to mention the only thing the two really had in common.

"Excited for the cup this year, Pearce?" She questioned, crossing her arms over her chest. He was Hufflepuff's Keeper after all, while she wasn't terribly close, they were pretty cordial. He never smacked a Bludger her way at the very least.

She kept her eyes on him, hoping some conversation might make the train ride a bit quicker to pass by.

Train to Hogwarts

It was in the early morning twilight, before the world even began to stir, Cal was jogging his usual route – a habit he had acquired from his many years of training. It was something that had become second nature to him at this point. He really enjoyed light training at this time, there was just something about it, something almost… peaceful. It was a stark contrast in his mind to how the world has otherwise been these past few years. He shakes his head to clear his head of those kinds of thoughts quickly. Now wasn’t the time. There were things that he needed to do today, and he had to focus.

Just as the first genuine rays of sunlight crested over the horizon he had finally returned to his home. He slowly came to a walking pace, letting his body come down in energy, as well as making sure to stretch his muscles a little. When he feels that he was sufficiently wound down he makes his way into his house, careful to move at a moderately quiet noise level, before grabbing his clothes and taking a quick shower. By the time he was finished and dressed for the day he could smell the beginnings of breakfast. With a smile he made his way downstairs, turning a corner, he spots the familiar sight of his mothers back, and a familiar tune that was being hummed through the air. She was a petite woman, with strawberry blonde hair, and a heart shaped face – set with kind, forest green, eyes.

He quietly approaches taking in the sight as it wasn’t common by any means. Things were being cooked in pots that seemed to be controlled by invisible hands, plates, cups, and cutlery were flying and setting themselves upon the table. He leans against the frame leading into the kitchen, a soft smile stretching across his face, it wasn’t often that he got to see her using her magic. His father was deeply uncomfortable with such things, often exploding at its use, and sending him spiraling down. So, his mother tried to avoid using it in front of him.

In fact, it was due to this that they fell behind in their schedules for a while, with the first thing being that their car had broken down. Which wasn’t much of a surprise being that the car was old and in need of a much-deserved repair…or junking. From there it all went downhill with one thing happening right after the other. It was at this point that Cal finally pushed himself off the frame, walked forward and ghosted her cheek with a quick kiss, making her slightly startle – a plate setting down a little harder than it should as a result. Cal gave a small chuckle as his mother swats his arm while huffing in exasperated adoration, mirth filling her eyes, “morning, Cal!”

“Good morning, Mum!” He exclaims happily, “ready to go?”

She gestures to the plates, now containing a full breakfast, “let’s eat first and then we can go!” Cal eats with an excited enthusiasm, ready to start his final year at Hogwarts, and then perhaps he could get his mom and him out of there.

It was at this time that the floorboards upstairs began to creak and his good mood seemed to vanish almost instantly, a glare being directed towards the ceiling, and with a grunt he sets aside his plate and grabs a hold of his moms hands. “Come on, mum, we should really get going.” He says softly, as she nods in quiet agreement, leaving a half-finished breakfast behind and making their way towards the garage. The car having already been packed the night before. They were able to pull away before any sign of his father could be seen, it was only when they were some distance away that Cal could feel himself relax again, never even noticing when he had tensed up. With a deep breath he lets the negative feelings roll off his shoulder.

“He does care about you, Cal.” His mother says to him, casting a glance as she does, and Cal gives a quick incredulous grunt in acknowledgment. Both realizing that those words sounded just as empty as they felt. Then it was silent until they had finally arrived at Kings Cross. After a quick hug goodbye, Cal’s mother drove off, leaving him to walk the rest of the way to Platform 9 ¾. Along his way he actively began a search for any of the new confused muggleborns.

After helping a few of them find the right place and instructing them on how to get through, he made his own way through, feeling a weight being lifted from his shoulder at the sight of the familiar locomotive. With his usual smile returning he sets off to find an available car to settle down in. After a few full cars he finally comes across one that’s relatively empty save for one familiar face. Keaton Calum, a Gryffindor of the same year as him.

“If you're looking for an invitation I won't be much help, but I'd recommend taking a seat before someone else does.” Keaton smiled. “And if any of you are good at potions I could really use the help.”

“Thanks!” Cal exclaimed as he returned the smile, “I’m not the best a potions myself, but perhaps the other two behind me might be?” He questions as he moves into the compartment and begins storing his stuff on the racks above. He had noticed the presence of the other people behind him but hadn’t really looked until now.

Doing so, he recognizes them from the same year as well, although from different houses.

Quinn Kingston, A Hufflepuff, who he’s had quite a few conversations with during the years, and Neil Black, A Slytherin, someone who he’s rarely had any interaction with even after all these years.

‘Sometimes that’s just the way things went in Hogwarts though.’ Cal thinks as he sits himself near the window.
