When life closes a
door...

door.

Thats how they work.

A rainy morning was expected by anyone who had lived in Brookridge for any given time. It was wet in the morning and hot during the day, which wasn't entirely unpleasant. Though many of the students at Yearwood complained about it, seeing as they had never had to deal with the rain very much. The mid September morning wasn't too cold despite the rain.

Today was special for one reason only, all the students would be coming around and settling into their dorms and meeting their room and house partners. Our group of rag-tag scholarship winners and a lone out-of-place rich kid each were going to their own dorm house, that they would share. The start of term was tomorrow, though it would likely only be introductory classes and so they had to be settled in by then.

The start of term was always an uproar of confusion, even for the rich and wealthy who paid people to settle in for them. This group of normal, not uber-wealthy kids? Disastrous. That was the only word to describe the situation, they were all supposed to be here by 7 am, and here they were an hour later, finally all together.

Most were stuck in the rain or the traffic, and only a few were actually on time. Some were settled on the couches in the living room, some were just coming inside, and some were raiding the kitchen. Most were bleary-eyed and wet still, so they really hadn't taken the time to talk to each other, at least not yet.

They were running late. Not Micah, of course. The redhead made sure to arrive on time and has now been inside the dorm house for the last two and a half hours. It was everyone else that were holding up the introduction thing. They just wanted to get this over with and go back to their room. Mia had been left upstairs because there was someone with a (mild) cat fur allergy, denying Micah the comfort of petting her. They had left their kitten purring away as she enjoyed her third nap of the morning.

Micah wasn't the only one waiting for the... intro-thing to start. There was a person with crutches next to them and, what the sixteen year old assumed to be, their service dog (a gorgeous animal) nearby. When the two had first arrived, Micah had briefly worried about how tiny Mia might react to the dog but they seemed nice enough and Mia was friendly with Aunt Jane's German shepherd so it should be fine.

... Right...?

Shaking their head slightly, the redhead did their best to focus on the book nestled in their lap. It was a good thing they'd brought it downstairs with them because this meeting was over an hour behind schedule and it would have been horribly boring without something to occupy their time.

... When would this thing even start...?

Graham

Graham’s uber was going down some back alley country road nonsense. The rain was coming down, and much to his driver’s annoyance, Graham had the window down and was staring longingly out the window as they passed rich gardens and lavish mansions.

Earbuds in, and with his arm resting against the open window, he looked remarkably serious for someone of his general disposition. A heaviness to his brow that usually wasn’t there.

Rain drops turned to little droplets of blood as the memories of old washed over him once more.

Do ya think that this guy ever bathes he smells like the fecking cats from Ms Callaghan’s

Melancholy didn’t suit him very well. Everyone had known that he was the “nice” twin. The “considerate” twin. The one you talked to when Aoife was in one of her moods. The sensible one.

He’d been just as mischievous, just more easy going. His change in demeanor had turned too many heads. Made people worry. He didn’t know how he was supposed to be the same though, when all he could see was Aoife staring at him with wide, terrified eyes and the knowledge that it should’ve been him.

But, he had a show to put on… For his family’s sake.

Graham’s uber finally pulled up to the house and he launched himself out of the car. “Thanks love, sorry ‘bout the rain” He said to the driver, giving the person driving a little flirtatious wink as he went to the trunk and pulled out his luggage.

The door opened and he ducked inside. “Feckin’ storming out there, ay?” He said to the two who were just… sitting in the living room. Something was tickling the back of his mind already.

A self-assured cocky grin and the general smug assholery of a person who called themselves “a hot piece of meat” and the wry humor of a person who really liked to hear the sound of their own voice.

His eyes did a quick scan of the living room around him. Oh fuck. He realized what that tickle was. Oh no. They were going to be boring pieces of shit. Ughhhhhhhhh-

“You guys ‘ready call rooms or is it all free real estate.” That same wry humor. Maybe that was less of an “asshole” thing and more “just how his voice was” Graham sure as fuck didn’t give a shit. “Doesn’t matter to me. Just need to know where I’m sleepin’, loves.”

Being forced to go somewhere you don't want to be is one thing. An inconvenience, definitely, but overall not the end of the world. Being forced to go move in somewhere you don't want to be at seven in the morning? Totally different, and totally fucking unacceptable.

Violet couldn't decide if she was more or less pissed at the fact that she was taking an Uber to get to the Academy. It was an hour or so drive from Amy's vacation home, where they'd all been staying for the last week. Tensions had been relatively high the entire time, especially the first day and this morning. The first day was when her dad and his wife had told her that they were shipping her off to this hellhole. Sure, they'd mentioned the idea in passing but Violet had been one hundred percent certain her dad would never just get rid of her.

So much for that. Whatever, she sure as hell wasn't gonna make it easy for them. This morning, she had woken up at 6am sharp and made the decision to make sure everyone else in the house knew it. She took her sweet time getting ready: took a hot bath, had a haircare day, shuffled through six different outfits, put on way too much makeup, all the while blasting obnoxious music on the each of speakers littered throughout the house. She'd thought this last annoyance would satisfy her and prevent an argument from taking place, but alas she'd been wrong.

Actually, an argument would've been better than what actually went down. She was no stranger to calm conversations with venomous undertones, but with her father?

"Monty look, Amy and I just think you need more structure in your life, that's all."
She'd been unable to hold her tongue when he made it clear that his wife's opinion mattered so much that she herself didn't get a say.

"Yeah, lord knows you could never fuckin' give me that. Y'kno, you've disappointed me before but this is a whole other level."
Once she'd gotten started, the words just kept tumbling out, even when she knew she'd sprinted way passed the line.
"You're quite literally getting rid of me because your new bitch told you to and because you're a fuck-up."

"That's not fair, Mon-"

Violet had slammed the front door behind her before Amir could get another word out. The interaction kept replaying in her head over the entire duration of her trip.

Arriving at the Academy was almost a relief because at least she could find something to occupy herself with there. Almost. She grabbed her luggage from the trunk and walked into the building, straight passed the two people sitting in the living room and into a bathroom. The best part about old ass buildings had to be that their windows were usually easy to crack open enough to let the smoke out. She would've preferred some bud, but nicotine would have to do for now.

Chucking the cigarette butt out the window, Violet popped a stick of gum in her mouth, sprayed herself down with some perfume, and walked back out into the living room. Some big, accented dude with bright hair had added himself to the mix and seemed to be trying his best to strike up a conversation with the two awkward-looking people that had been here when she'd arrived.

Not wanting to interact with her housemates when she felt borderline homicidal, Violet took a seat on the floor in a far corner and watched the situation unfold instead.

Tilly sat bouncing both knees up and down quite aggressively as she sat in the quiet carriage of the train. She had her eyes closed, and her noise cancelling headphones sat firmly around her head. Her only comfort was her beautiful Maggie, the hairless cat whom she had been thrilled to find out she could bring along. She was sitting pretty in a plush little pet carrier. To think, a school that you could bring pets to! This really was going to be an whole new world. One that she felt she would hardly fit into. She was full of nervous energy, but she had to sit on this train for another 30 painful minutes. Her ears were filled with random low-fi playlists she had saved to her Spotify. Every five or six minutes she would anxiously check the digital screen above her that informed passengers of the next stop. The train she was on was NOT the train she was meant to be on. That train had left her behind at 5:45am. She had caught the next one a whole HOUR later and would arrive at the station to 7:30, then it was a good... how long again? Tilly whipped her phone out and quickly punched in the address of the station and the address of the school and clicked route. "Twenty minutes" She muttered. She was going to be nearly an hr late.

One eternity later, she arrived at the station. She dragged her bulging luggage and her cat out on to the platform, turned off her music and started playing the walking directions. She paused a moment to search though her shoulder bag for her umbrella, as of course the fucking heavens had opened up. Pills, wallet, various scrunched up bits of paper, wrappers, scrunchies, a pair of socks, her inhaler. "No no come the heck on" She got a few glances because she had said that out loud. She took herself over to a seat so she could put her cat down, and opened her suitcase up. After a bit of rummaging she found one of those hiking jackets since it was supposed to be waterproof. It was the best she had. She placed it over her head and shoulders and braved the streets, walking briskly as the directions played in her ears. Maggie was meowing angrily, but at least she was protected from the rain in her carrier.

Several soggy squelchy minutes later she saw her destination. She was breathing heavily, she'd been going a little too fast towards the end, but nothing drastic. When she arrived there was a lady entering the large building that was to be her new home. I'm not the last to arrive She thought to herself as she caught the door the lady had just let go of awkwardly with her shoulder and quickly pulled her luggage and cat through. Her hat/jacket contraption fell to the floor as well. Her mind was racing, she felt like her face was hot. For a moment she was sort of frozen, but she snapped out of it, picked up her jacket and moved into the livingroom where she heard voices. Where's that woman I saw? She was quick! Probably in a hurry because of the rain I guess.

Gathering back her train of thought she looked around at the other faces. A glasses wearing redheaded boy, and a girl with crutches and an service dog were both sitting apart, and then there was a tall and, she had to admit, very fit young man standing near her as she entered. She had a lot of thoughts but could not manage to get them out of her mouth coherently yet. She put down her stuff and bent down to check on Maggie in her cage. When she concluded that she was ok she stood up and smiled. “Hey! Sorry for my late and… damp arrival” she paused “Er…I’m Tilly, nice to meet you all”
