It smells like shit down here The smell of shit lingered along with perspiration and dirt. It was dimly lit down below decks with only a couple of lanterns. Most of the dark shapes huddled together for warmth to fend off the cold morning air that came in through the cracks. Guess I ought to get up Dizzy thought. He grabbed his old battered triangle shaped hat and put it on his head before going up. It was silent up here as the sun was just beginning to peep out on the horizon. "Dizzy! it's your turn to watch!" a voice shouted at him. A young teenage boy, a few years younger than him with a gap between his two front teeth greeted him and clapped Dizzy on the shoulder. "Don't remind me Pete... it's too early to wake up" he groaned. He walked on and was Pete disappeared into the darkness and it was just Dizzy all alone, except for the helmsman. He thought he saw something flicker under the water. Something pink. Coral? all the way out here? Are we near shore? It wouldn't do to shout that they might need to turn the ship and cause alarm. So Dizzy swung his legs over the railing and looked down. It's not there anymore. Must have been a trick of the light.

Her hair floated around the girl underneath the water. Looking above her, a large shadow loomed over the ocean as a large object was floating on the surface of the water. Getting a closer look underneath the water, it seemed to be a large ship passing by. Smiling to herself, the curious mermaid decided to follow it wanting to look more at it as it moved through the water. She swam quickly keeping up with it, flashes of pink from her tail shown through the water to the surface above. Seeing a figure look closer, the mermaid quickly hid underneath the boat and in the shadows hoping the person hadn't seen her. That was close, I need to be careful if I don't want to be caught.

The clouds were spotty now. It had been drizzling for about 20 minutes and heavily raining for 10. He was thoroughly soaked. The wind's picking up. That much was true. Shadows crossed over him and blotted out the sun. "Mark! I think there's a storm coming!" He had been so focused on wondering whether or not he needed to get his eyes checked and whether or not itd take his savings (for after all a pirate's eyes could mean a huge advantage in the dangerous ocean) that he had neglected to keep watch.

Two waves of different sizes from the same direction met - what he and his men called a rogue wave caught the boat off guard and the ship rolled heavily to the side. It caught Dizzy off guard and he grunted as he managed to grab on to the wet railing. "Mark help! I'm slipping!" He yelled but his voice was lost in the wind. Hell I can't hold on much longer. The railing was wet and slippery and he felt himself slip and suddenly the wet embrace of mother nature held him. I can't swim! Dizzy thought frantically as he flailed about trying to keep his head above water. The waves crashed over him and pushed him under the surface. "Help! I'm over-" he choked as another wave hit him.

The waters started getting rough making it harder for Azalea to swim through it. The sun had disappeared being covered with dark clouds making the water darker than before. The young mermaid was just about to head home, but seeing the way knock the ship over, she knew they were in trouble. Quickly, the mermaid swam around the ship ensuring that there were no holes in the bottom. She let out a sigh of relief seeing they weren't sinking, at least not yet.

As the waves continued hitting the ship, the mermaid had reached the side of the ship were it was leaning into the ocean. Her eye's widened seeing a man struggling to hold on before falling into the ocean. It was forbidden for mermaids to be seen by humans, let alone talk to one. But Azalea couldn't let the man drown, it just didn't seem right to leave him when she was fully capable of saving him. Once another wave knocked him under again, the young mermaid swam quickly to him wrapping her arms around his torso before yanking him up to the surface where he could get air. "Don't worry, I got you." Deciding what she should do next, she didn't see a way for her to get him back on board unless someone were to help them. The other option she had was to take him back to land and hope he could find the rest of his men later.

This is the end Dizzy thought as he struggled. Somehow he had managed to get his head above the water.
Meanwhile on deck, the pounding rain made for low visibility. The helmsman looked around. "Where is the lad?" he mumbled aloud. The youth had just been there a minute ago. He smoothed his mustache as he thought. The helmsman ran downstairs and called out. "Dizzy lad! You're supposed to be on deck!" The figures in the dark stirred. A groggy voice called out, "Dizzy ain't here. He hasn't been down since he got up." The helmsman felt his heart drop. "Man overboard! We need to find him!" He dashed upstairs and looked over the side of the ship. Down below he saw a bobbing figure. "Dizzy's there! Hand me a rope lads!" The course long ship's rope got handed to him. It was weathered and worn but it would do the job. He tossed it down. "Grab a'hold!"

Dizzy vaguely felt the rope being tossed to him and tied it around himself. The men aboard the ship pulled and he felt himself lifted from the water only to be buffeted by the cold wind. When he finally got in reach of the railing he pulled himself over and collapsed into a shivering mess. "Someone get this man a blanket!" A large horse blanket was thrown on him and the men reached up and pulled him to his feet before escorting him below the decks

Azalea glanced up to see men moving about the deck, assuming they were looking for the man who feel into the water. She did her best to try to hide in the shadows and underneath the water, still holding him up, but trying to remain hidden as possible. Once he had tied the rope and they began to pull him up, she slowly removed her hands swimming down underneath him wondering if he had noticed she was there. Sighing in relief, her job was done and the man was now saved. She hoped the best for him as he was such an attractive man. He was still too young to die as he should live life to fullest.

Seeing that there was nothing the mermaid could do now, she began to swam away back to her home. She couldn't help but continue to think about the man she had saved and how handsome he was. How could it be that a human had such an effect on the young mermaid?

It had been a long night after the storm. Thankfully the boat hadn't perished but there was repairs to be done and he had spent the night a shaking mess. Pete and some other men had kept him company but mostly it was just Pete. "I'm not a believer in God but he must have done something. The devil must have been trying to drown ye" Pete said brightly as he stoked the fire. "I still don't believe in god, or gods. Probably was just luck. And don't you suggest fate Pete. You know I don't believe in those superstitious matters." Dizzy said as he rose and decided to walk around to get his bearings.

It's strange. I don't feel like I had a near death experience. In fact I feel safe. he thought absentmindedly. "I must be daft" he chuckled and shook his head. The truth was that he wasn't invincible and he came close to death. Why don't I feel scared?

It had been a week since Azalea had saved the human from drowning, but ever since that day she couldn't stop thinking about them. Although their interaction was very brief and he probably didn't realize she was even there, she couldn't help but think about him, how handsome his face was, how beautiful he looked? How was it possible for a human to have this much of an effect on her? The mermaid thought it would pass after a couple of days, but after a week her mind would wander to him more and more. If only there was some way that she could see him again, but if she truly wanted to be with him, then she would have to figure a way out to be a human, at least temporarily.

It took some time, but the mermaid remembered that there was a sea witch that lived out of the kingdom, banished away from the other merfolk. It has been told that she has the power to do anything you could ever imagined. That seemed like the perfect person Azalea needed to see. The young mermaid swam to the place that someone told her where the sea witch lived. Hesitantly swimming inside the mermaid peeked around glancing for any sign. "Hello? Is anybody here?"

The bottom half looks like that, only it's more like a shrimp.

Azarul lay in her chamber grabbing bits of seaweed out of her short green hair. With her other hand she twirled and spun with the small currents that ran through her cave, letting the water run between her fingertips. "Hello? Is anybody here?" A voice interrupted her playtime. Almost no one came to this cave. At least not mers. Her legs twitched in curiosity and she rolled her eyes. Mers were always so rude. Barging in her domain after THEY had kicked her out. "Yes I'm here, there's no need to shout." she said irritably as she rested her hand on her shoulder. The mermaid sounded as if she was in the main chamber. "Take a right." She waited for the girl to come to her. When she felt her presence she looked up. The mermaid had strawberry blonde hair, and was beautiful. Everything she wasn't. A heavy sigh emerged from her lips. "Yes I am Azarul. What would you like? I swear if you people tell me I have overdue book charges one more time I'll turn you into a squid." She looked at her and waved her hand hastily, "If you're here on other business spit it out."
