Mark can be a bit of a jokester, though he does take things seriously, he's just more comfortable when he can joke around. He doesn't always listen to what he's told to do, but if it's something important he usually does. Mark can be a bit of an emotional person, he doesn't try to hide his emotions. It's obvious when he's happy and jumping for joy, when he's mad and yelling at someone, or upset and on the verge of tears. Shoving his emotions down or bottling them up isn't something he is really capable of doing. Mark can also be a bit of a klutz, he's just never been the most oriented person.

Mark's life has thus far been a set of stages. Stage one was from the time he was born up until he was ten, living a relatively normal life as a kid. He was a bit on the shy side back then, but still got on along well enough. It was until his parents got divorced, and stage two hit, that he really started to shift. The split was amicable at the time, though over time Mark really noticed that his mother didn't want to have much contact with his father anymore. Mark ended up living with his mother, the two moving to the opposite side of the state. While Mark lived with her, he didn't take sides, and still went to visit his dad every other weekend and holidays. Still though, he was forced to choose which parent to spend time with on which holidays since the two didn't get along enough to want to be around each other.

This caused Mark to really push away from relying on them too often. Even a little bit of a rebellious phase hit once he was a teenager. Eventually his father started dating a man, much to his surprise. Mark really wasn't bothered by it but the surprise was enough to make it awkward overall for him. Eventually the talk hit, where his father explained that no he and Mark's mother hadn't divorced because of that, and they had indeed fallen out of love as they claimed to start with. Still though, Mark didn't hide the fact that he wasn't a fan of his fathers new lover. Santiago was the town's Sheriff, and Mark hadn't really met the man much before then so he hadn't had much of an impression of the man. But the new intrusion into the family wasn't met with welcomed arms by Mark.

Stage three came around when he was sixteen, when Mark's mother passed away suddenly. Afterwards he went to live with his father in the small town he originally grew up in. Jacob Bennett was a farmer, so it was only natural that Mark help out after moving in. Still though, this turning point in his life was when he really started focusing on his studies. Losing his mother was difficult for him, and while he loved his father, suddenly living with the man full time alongside the man's boyfriend wasn't the most enjoyable. At least at first, Mark did find his footing over time, and even gradually began to like Santiago. Mark had an interest in programming, or even computers in general, and was able to put up the grades to get into college. Stage four involved moving away to go to college, though once again he was only a few hours away and still came home when he had time off.

Everybody knows stage five, when the world fell apart. The moment things started getting hairy Mark had started driving home, but he hadn't made it before someone crashed into him. While he was fine, his car was done, so he called his dad while stranded. Not long after he got a real taste of what was going on when two crazed people chased him back into his busted vehicle. The already broken glass from a side window giving way partially to allow one to crawl halfway inside. Mark hid in the backseat until his father arrived an hour later, calling his name from near the wreck. This only reinvigorated the infected person stuck inside the driver window however, "Dad!" He'd called out, and opened the back side door to get out. "Back up!" Came his fathers voice, stern and unwavering. And just as Mark stood, he spotted that what looked to be the infected woman from earlier was now focused on his father. While his father held a gun up, pointed at her. It was almost like time slowed, his father firing, but the person just kept lurching until it dropped. During this, the infected that had been stuck in the car window had freed itself and meandered around the car. Just as Mark and his father were about to embrace, it was on them, and Jacob protected his son by putting himself in the way and shoving the thing back. The two wasting no time after, getting into his dads truck and leaving.

Stage six came about fairly quickly. It was losing his dad to a bite, a bite he'd sustained when saving Mark at the wrecked vehicle. Mark had watched his father grow sick until the man had died. And he felt like a big part of himself died with the man. If Santiago hadn't been there, and hadn't realized that when Mark's father started moving again, that it wasn't really Jacob. Well, Mark might have died along with his father. After this Mark really fell into a daze, and Santiago rounded up what was left of the town and they all left for his ranch. Mark stayed shut down at first but eventually he managed to start trying to help out with the small settlement that was being created. The last thing he wanted to be was dead weight, so he pushed through. Santiago even started showing him the basics of how to survive if anything were to happen, even taught him how to shoot. It Something Mark had avoided learning before, but understood he needed to know how in this new world. It wasn't like he hadn't been camping over the years, but it was the bare minimum of camping if he was honest, he didn't spend much time paying attention to the things he could have learned should he have tried.

Denise Nelson

BASICS
Full Name: Denise Ann Nelson
Nickname: Denise
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Affiliation: Second-in-Command at the Ranch
Role: Glorified ranch hand, zombie-killer, scavenger, and occasional cook.
Pre-Apocalypse Employment: Full-time stay-at-home "soccer mom" of three children
Birthplace: New York

Appearance & Style
Face Claim: Thandiwe Newton

Details: 5'5", dark brown eyes, dark brown hair.

Build: Getting on the skinny side these days.

Clothes: Prefers utility over style, t-shirts and tunics with denim jeans are her go-to clothes, combined with a sweater or jacket on cold days. She's almost always wearing sneakers - better for running compared to boots.

Notable details: No defining tattoos, scars, or other markings. She wears no jewelry whatsoever.

Personality
Denise is a no-nonsense woman who tells it like it is. She takes no bullshit, and gives none either. Respect from her needs to be earned, not demanded - but she's no idiot and knows when to hold her tongue and keep her thoughts to herself. She's willing to work for the good of the group only as long as the group remains smart, organized, and cohesive. She doesn't tolerate weakness, laziness, or stupidity. She's enough of a hardass that she can be very hard to get to know, but once you do, you realize her attitude comes from a place of wanting people to just be real. No fake exteriors, no picket fences, no putting on airs. Just real, honest existence.

Likes: Reading, shooting, combat practice, martial arts.

Dislikes: Domestic chores, children, sexism, "men who are pigs".

Motivations: Surviving, remaining as independent as possible, never having to feel like she needs to fake it ever again.

Fears: Winding up feeling trapped no matter where she goes or what she does. Waking up one day and realizing she misses her children. Others finding out that she abandoned her children.

Habits: Occasionally smokes when nervous. Compulsive gum-chewer.

History
Prior to the start of whatever nightmare this is, Denise stayed at home to take care of her three children full time, ages 15, 14, and 12. She was the epitome of an upper-middle-class suburban soccer mom - including the minivan to take her kids to soccer practice, and wherever else they needed to go. Her husband was a gifted surgeon who was often away from home. He worked late, traveled to conferences for business, and cheated frequently. He didn't know Denise was aware of this, but she had definitely hired a private investigator to find him.

Her children, two boys and the middle one a girl, were all absolute terrors. The oldest boy was already turning into a delinquent, with the little bastard frequently skipping school, stealing, getting into fights, drinking, and dabbling in drugs. The girl was a mean and cruel bully, and Denise suspected the girl had something to do with the suicide of one of her classmates. The youngest boy had mental health issues and a fascination with harming small animals and beating up the neighborhood children in ways that made it difficult for her to sleep at night. Despite her best efforts, and with zero help from her absentee husband, she felt like she had no way to help any of them. In truth, she hated them all. She had never really wanted children to begin with.

Slowly squirreling away money over the course of a year, she had saved up enough to ditch this shitty life she was trapped in and had plans to move to California to pursue literally anything else than what she was doing now. Maybe art, maybe go to school. Once she was ready, she packed a few bags, left a note on the nightstand, and drove off early one morning with no intent of ever looking back.

Joining Other Survivors
Denise made it as far as Ohio before everything fell apart and the walking corpses forced her to abandon her car. She was on the run for a time, moving from place to place and just trying to survive, before a group of scavengers picked her up and invited her back to a nearby ranch.

She told the survivors living at the ranch she was on the run from her abusive husband, but has not ever told anybody that she has children. The other survivors took her in, welcoming her among their ranks as she proved herself to be useful, a hard-worker, and as level-headed as one could remain in times like these. In time, she became seen as the second-in-command around the ranch. She bore that responsibility well - finding this in some ways preferable to her old life. Yes, she was once again responsible for the well-being of others, but this time it was different. She had chosen this.

Relationships
Husband and children - Abandoned and presumed (or hoped?) to be killed in the outbreak, but unverified.

Penelope Crow
Periodic Character

f4b3d6e24df41166ab85e76afa8af2638204e83b.gif
Name: Penelope Crow
Nickname: Penny
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Pan

Role within Samaritans community: Scout

How did they become a member of the Samaritans: Penelope was forcefully assimilated into the group, though not without a fight. Of course, the use of force to coerce her into the group never made it past the scouting party that brought her and the others she was with in.

Physical description:
  • Red/brown curly hair
  • 5'3"
  • 120 lbs.
  • Thin and lithe
  • Rather athletic
  • Heavily freckled
  • Brown eyes
d19bfb7ee490b028f5a5df599024a0645f39d765.gif
Personality:
  • Cautious
  • Observant
  • Quick-witted
  • Quiet
  • Empathic

History: Before the infection hit, Penny Crow was just an ordinary girl. She had a pleasant and rather boring home life with a younger brother and two loving parents, and when it was time to go off to college, Penny moved from her quiet hometown to the dorms of a large university. Penny's end goal was to get a law degree, and eventually work her way up to becoming a judge like her mother was, and she had gotten a good two years through her basic education when the infection hit. A highly populated area like a college dorm was no easy place to escape, especially not with actual college athletes as zombies on your heels, but Penny quickly discovered that she could easily navigate difficult terrain, finding lips and ledges to grip or push off of. In retrospect, she'd wonder if she missed her calling as a rock climber or doing parkour.

Getting across country without reliable transporation, while dodging zombies and constantly having to scavenge for supplies was not ideal, but Penny was determined to try and make her way home, to see what had become of her family. Were Mom and Dad still alive? Did someone take care of her brother Asher? She'd find her questions never quite got answered, as somewhere in Ohio, a group of people from the Samaritans community raided the little group she had been a part of at the time. Penny had tried to make a break for it, but this particular group of raiders was not feeling merciful. They forcefully took her and anyone else in the group back to their community, and after several months of breaking her in, set Penny on scouting duty. She's since given up hope of finding her family, but perhaps in the meantime she can help the needy families here, with or without the higher ups' consent.

Relationships: To Be Determined
