Let's Try That Again

  • One year ago, the world ended.

If you're looking for a metaphor, stop looking. I was being literal.

One year ago, armageddon erupted worldwide across the world of Alheria. The Abyssal portals opened, and ancient demon lords entered through to consume mortalkind. Devils of Hell rose from their lakes of fire, and the angels of Heaven descended to meet them in battle. Gods joined in soon after - good and bad, mighty and subtle. Soon enough, kings, senators, chancellors, generals, and rulers were seduced by tempter devils to launch pointless attacks on their neighbors, or scared into fighting back. Armies seized, armies shattered. Arcane weapons of mass destruction activated and fired without mercy. Brutality merged with havoc to become pandemonium. Ragnarok.

But then, a group of wizards who'd prepared for the event activated an array of ancient portals leading to another world, and they opened these portals in various spots throughout the planet. The cabal of magicians, led by one named Ygrasmundhil, then guided the survivors on a mass exodus to safety. They left behind the higher-dimensional beings to duke it out with what's left of the old world.

The portals led to the new world of Melicau. Relatively unheard of prior to the apocalypse, the world was lush with resources and new landscapes to explore. The group of wizards, hence known as the Newdawn Cabal, oversaw the creation of five villages - now cities: Newtown, Sparhard, Pride's Point, Fardock, and Oakenwall.

It has been over a year since the Exodus. We failed at living - so let's try that again.

The God-Emperor of Mankind
You don't need to use the standard character sheet: NPCs needn't have as many details as ordinary characters; they are secondary in importance and will only appear episodically or as a supporting role for other characters. No like or indication is required from me to have an NPC accepted, although if I notice any of them are unreasonably powerful or break the flow in some other way, I will point it out and demand a change.

Newdawn Cabal
"For every dusk, there is a dawn."

Key Members:
Ygrasmundhil
The "first among equals" of the group, Ygrasmundhil is the de facto leader and head of the Cabal, with other wizards turning to him for advice.

He breaks the surprising stereotype of the "white-bearded robe-wearing sorcerer," in that he is actually younger than most of the group, and yet inextricably more powerful, with wisdom to match. Unlike most wizards who are quick and subtle to anger, he takes criticism in stride and always faces opposition with a smile.

Several years before the apocalypse, he invited Akallas and Eisvina to his residence and asked them to collaborate on research. What really happened behind the closed doors is a mystery, but officially they founded a nameless cabal and began to invite other promising magicians from all over the continent, and eventually the planet - most of it in relative secrecy.

He specializes in cosmology, time and space magecraft, and the operations of parallel worlds, which is presumably what gave him the idea of using portals to escape to another world.
Akallas
Akallas was one of the founding members of the Newdawn Cabal.

Previously an arrogant magician with aristocratic roots who used his magic to become even richer and more powerful, the experience of surviving the apocalypse and seeing the world in ruins has mellowed him out and given him new perspective.

He specializes in divination and prophecy but has never been able to see even a glimmer of the apocalypse until it happened. Simply put, in the timelines of the future he viewed, the "apocalypse" never existed. He theorizes it's because gods are so far above the realm of a mortal magician that they act as natural blindspots for prophecy. This has also caused him to become curious in how things escalated so quickly...

He currently works as the Newtown secretary.
Eisvina
An elven sorceress, oldest and founding member of the Cabal, currently two-hundred and seven years old.

In the old world, she used to be the second daughter of a forest king and partially through nepotism, gained the spot of the royal enchantress.

She specializes in the creation of magical objects, imbuement of effects, augmentation of natural properties, and related fields, like cultivating natural energy. This means she can outfit many people with objects of magical power, and currently she works as the aide of the Oakenwall chancellor. She gives the workers enchanted axes and pickaxes to ease up on their resource-gathering work and speed up the process.
Iggwiv
An orcish shaman who used to be a part of the wandering tribes. He was recruited by the Cabal nary a month before the apocalypse.

He is a master of war-magic, spiritual binding, and druidry, as well as similar crafts. He currently acts as a peacekeeper in Sparhard's chain of command, investigating into cases of military misconduct, and making sure the machine works smoothly.
Andromeda
An elven oracle and one of the Cabal's earliest members excepting the founders.

She specializes in healing, magic related to positive energy, and contact with spirits. She's found work in Pride's Point due to the commonality of her arts with what clerics and paladins used to do and she teaches them and ensures that the people there follow the Ban.
Edlar the Wise
A dwarven smith-magician, recruited after the apocalypse.

He operates as the mayoral liaison in Fardock, and also as a smith and local magician. He mostly creates enchanted weapons, armor and equipment, which means a lot of trade between Fardock and Sparhard related to the things he crafts.

Sparhard: NPCs
This will not include every possible NPC within Spargard, rather, it will only show those that are integral to the story, or a subplot of a specific character.

Haldur Sefkred
- Marshal, 2nd Division.

- An old veteran from the old world. He survived the coming of the end with his wits and has a newfound perspective on people after having faced several near-death encounters. His mannerisms are quite old-schooled, and as such he has been known as the "wise old man" of the 2nd Division.

Kellid Dakilrost
- A member of the Dakilrost clan, who is serving his blood-inherited sentence in the Sparhard dungeons, and in the mines between Sparhard and Oakenwall. Constantly under strict surveillance, though has been granted the right to visits from the outside.
Alina Ignistrat
- General, 1st Division.

- One of the faces of Sparhard's Military, a leading figure in recruiting new additions to the army. Her similarities with the famous god-slaying heroine, Charon Ashbringer, has caused her dislike of the said heroine.

- Prides herself in the abilities she has obtained from her bloodline, and her rank in the hierarchy.

Ushtu Ig
- Colonel, 6th Division.

- Despite only holding the rank of Colonel, the moon orc is one of the popular, or rather known, members of the 6th division. That is due to her sheer combat prowess, whereas colonels lead entire regiments she often goes to on assignments to dangerous unexplored regions by herself and comes back unscathed. However due to her lack or want to lead other men she will probably not get promoted beyond this rank.

- Most people know that her last name isn't her birth one, Ig standing for 2 in the orcish language but no one so far has been able to decipher the reason behind it.
