It was the beginning of another year at Hawthorne High, one of the two high schools in Meadowvale - a quaint town within Oregon. The weather here was mainly rain and cloudy days, aside from really warm sunny days in Summer and slushy snow days in Winter. It wasn't the best town, with your normal drug trades and gang wars between the two gangs that were actually relevant. For Faith this would be her 8th year here since the falling out at the family home back in California. Having been here since very young, she was well known and knew how to get around the place.

Junior year. It was certainly the beginning of it all. Everything she did this year could make or break her college days. At least that's how she'd been thinking of it. When her alarm sounded to signal it was 5am and time to get up and out of bed, Faith frantically turned it off. If her parents were to wake up, she'd be in big trouble and she didn't need that today. She went about her daily routine as quietly as possible, desperate to keep them asleep until she was safe and sound outside the house. Her room was the cleanest place of the entire house so maneuvering in silence was harder than she wanted between piles of trash, beer cans everywhere, plastic bags, etc. She would love to clean the place up but her parents never left the house. They lived off food stamps and money from the government, which would be put towards alcohol and drugs.

Faith successfully got herself ready and made her way outside without anyone waking up. No beatings today! If it weren't for her books and imagination, Faith probably would have done the deed by now. The power of magic as she figured. She hopped onto her bike and made headway towards Hawthorne High. By now it was about 5:30 and school started at 7, so she had a lot of time to waste. Across from the school there were apartments and besides those, a small store. Faith decided to stop there to grab breakfast; a blueberry muffin and orange juice. It was better than nothing, though she did want to taste her Aunts french toast again soon.

With breakfast gone and being digested, Faith continued to the school where she parked her bike and made sure to lock it up. Who knew who would try to steal it. The school would still be locked until 6:30, which meant she had quite a bit of time to kill. Faith took a seat on one of the benches outside the school and pulled out one of her books. This one was about a warrior knight who had to go on an epic adventure with some others to save their kingdom. It was really good and Faith couldn't get enough of it.

At 4:00 Blake gets out of bed his hair a mess and his room messy. He got out of bed and ran down stairs to say good morning but after opening the door he realized there was nobody to say good morning to. His face became grim as he walks out of their room into the kitchen. He has toast, eggs and ham, he walks into his room gets on his computer and pays his bills in advance. After an hour of reading a book he calls his butler and tells him to pick him up. In the car the butler ask " It is your parents again isn't it master Blake?" then Blake says "yeah, how did you know?" "not to be rude sir but, you are crying." The rest of the car ride was silent. The car stops and Blake wipes the tears from his eyes they both say bye and he goes to school.

Katerina woke up at around 5:45, rising easily and quickly getting dressed, bringing a protein bar to go and stowing it in her jacket pocket. She looked nice, smiling as she began her half hour walk to school at six o'clock. She could have driven, but she didn't mind the walk, she got to sing in the quiet of the early morning with no family to worry about. Not that she cared if they heard, she didn't like the chastisement. She got to school at around 6:40, and glanced around. She noticed a girl currently wrapped up in a book, she figured she didn't notice them let kids in. She walked over and tapped her lightly on the shoulder.

"Hi, miss! I was just letting you know they opened up the gate now. Take care!" And with that, the Polish girl went off, humming Ride as she walked into school.

"ALEX BREAKFAST IS READY" Alex's mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Alex woke abruptly and fell out of his bed, managing to get tangled up in his comforter. He laughed at himself before standing up and getting situated.
"BE DOWN IN A MINUTE MA!" He hollared back. He could smell the sweet aroma of pancakes from his room and his mouth watered. Alex rummaged through his drawers, pulling out some jeans, a t-shirt, a few grams, and a pair of socks. He dressed himself quickly before running downstairs, skipping the last steps and landing in the kitchen. His mom smiled warmly at him and handed him a plate with 4 pancakes drenched in syrup, just how he liked it.
"Good morning babe. How'd you sleep?" His mother asked as she sat down across from him.
"Pretty good. I was up kinda late playing videogames." Alex answered honestly, since his mom was as much of a nerd as he was. Alex knew his mom would understand.
"God you're just like me and it's so weird" Alex and his mom laughed and he checked his phone for the time. 6:45. Fuck.
"Shit I'm gonna be late for school!" With that, Alex shoved a pancake in his mouth and ran outside.
"Luh ou babe! Hah a gud day at shcool!" His mom called out, mouth still full of pancake.
Alex ran to his bike and hopped on it, pedaling as fast as he could to make it to school on time.

When Alex finished locking his bike up it was already 7:15, but he had photography first period and wasn't really worried about missing anything. School was never fun for him. Alex was good at every subject (except math) but he didn't find anything interesting about the mandatory routine and his marijuana habit didn't make him want to try any harder either.

Ellie’s mum walked into her room and pulled open the curtains. “Good morning darling” she said softly. “If you want breakfast, there are some eggs in the fridge. But please don’t fall asleep again.” She leaned over and planted a small kiss on Ellie’s forehead before turning and leaving the room. Ellie stayed in bed for a bit longer until she heard the sound of the front door shutting, meaning her mother had left for work. Ellie slowly rolled out of bed, seeing that it was only 6:00am so she could take her time getting ready. Once she had gotten dressed and put her hair up into a bun she grabbed her bag and made her way out of the house.

She decided to take to long way round to school as she had time and it was a sunny day which only made the walk more pleasant. As she walked through the gates she smiled at a few people but continued walking into the school.

Following the sounds of Painkiller by Judas Priest, her phone alarm, Shannon Tyler, clumsily, fumbled around her nightstand for it. Twenty seconds later, she turned the alarm off after retrieving her phone which she'd knocked off onto the floor. Realising she was already dressed, with her glasses on, and her head pounding harder than a drum, Shannon hauled herself up as she recited the drunken memories of last night and how many drinks she downed. Checking her watch, a little smirk grew on her face.

"Hangover from hell, yet I'm up a whole hour before school. Although I'll have to apologise to Mum about downing the rest of her beers".

Once Shannon had washed her face and freshened up, school awaited. Locking the front door behind her, after checking on her sleeping sister, she lit up a cigarette and got her motorbike out from the garage. Flooring it out of there, Master of Puppets by Metallica blasting from her earphones, smoking her cigarette, she got to school within half an hour. By then it was half-past six.

Parking her bike, boredom then overcame the fatigued Shannon. At least the school was unlocked now.

Walking in he saw two girls talking to each other, but didn't bother to say hi. "Why waste your time on something you all ready know" he said as he was walking to class. Because of his IQ he completely skipped 10th grade and went to the 11th.

Faith was known to get caught up in her books so it was no real surprise to her to find out the school had been opeened to the students by now. Feeling the tap on her shoulder, she looked up and was surprised to see a student approach her. Maybe she was new around here? "O-oh. Thanks." She watched as the girl bounded off towards the school for a few seconds before shoving her book away and grabbing her bag. She followed the natural flow of students into the building and headed to the second floor where her locker was located. First period was Calculous which Faith excelled at. Well, she excelled in all her studies really. A born genuis who studies a lot.

She headed on down the hall towards E220, Mr. Angelos' class. He was a relatively cool teacher, definitely the hipster type. Many saw it strange that such a character would be teaching Calc but decided not to question it. She settled into a random seat and started unpacking her things, setting them neatly on top of the desk. Class would start soon... which gave her time to think. A bunch of random students and herself had been chosen to join the Key Club which did community service and was supposedly lots of fun. Faith didn't know what to expect out of it. She hadn't been part of any clubs throughout her time in Hawthorne High - which now that she thought about it was probably the reason they had her sign up.

Finishing off another cigarette, Shannon pushed herself off of her bike, flinging the cigarette butt aside, landing against the front tyre.

"Now, to go to class or not. Make an excuse? Well I rode here, so I'll stay for now".

Entering the school, massaging her forehead, she adjusted her glasses while heading to her locker. What made her locker hers was the vague stench of booze and cigarettes that greeted you upon unlocking it. And because of the Motörhead poster that hung behind the locker door. But, right now, Shannon was interested in her mini makeup kit at the back of her locker. Squashed at the back, covered by schoolbooks and crumpled band posters.

Sam was fairly quick to rise when his alarm clock went off at 6:30. He managed to get himself in bed at 9:30, so that gave him a full nine hours of sleep on weeknights. He went ahead and brushed his teeth and got dressed before twisting and smoothing out his long red hair. The natural curls it took as he slept were better than what any brush could do after all. He went ahead to have a quick breakfast, his usual bowl of cereal, and packed a protein bar for himself as a midday snack. Once he made sure all his books and notebooks that he would need for the day were in his backpack, he threw it on and headed out.

The school was only about fifteen minutes away on foot, and by the time the redhead had arrived the students had already started to enter the building. As he walked into the halls, he scanned the placards next to the classroom doors to read the room numbers, though his feet pretty much followed muscle memory. When he arrived at the right classroom, he stepped into his first class, Calculus. Based on his appearance, it came as quite a surprise that math was one of his favorite subjects, alongside his computer science class. He gave a smile and nod to the teacher, who he felt a certain kinship with due to their common alternative style.

"Mornin' Mr. Angelo," he greeted.

"Hey Sam," he responded with a smile. "Hope you had a good weekend."

"I did, thanks. Hope you did too." His blue eyes then scanned the mostly empty desks for his assigned seat, which upon finding he sat down in. He looked over to his right to see that his neighbor had already arrived to class as well. "Yo Faith, how was your weekend?" he asked the pink-haired girl.

She was drawn out of her thougths by the familiar voice that was perhaps the only person she felt comfortable with. In a weird way that is. She was comfortable with them because they'd been neighbors for quite some time and had talked lots of times before, but it was awkward because they also knew about her situation. All the fighting, breaking, crying, etc that came from her house was known by everyone in the neighborhood but they never said anything. Which was a good thing because Faith didn't know what she would say in that kind of situation. Seemed too awkward and strange.

She smiled as pleasantly as she could at Sam. She had always admired their hair, it was a beautiful red, unlike her own bland light brown hair. At least she looked cute with it in a bob. Better than nothing she supposed. "Hi Sammy." She didn't know if she could say that but it was too late now! "Uhm, it was alright. I hung out with my aunt a lot." Which she did. She stayed for away from her house because the weekends were the worst of the days. Her parents "friends" came over every weekend and trashed the place. It was scary to be around all of them. Last time she had was a horrible memory and she'd really rather not have it happen twice. "What about you?" Simple small talk and conversation. Easy enough for her. While Faith was great in school her social work was lacking.

The girl kept walking, keeping in beat with her music as she entered, smiling and giving waves to passerby as she went to Calculus. Not her favorite subject, but she tried, if only because of her teacher. "Morning Mr. Angelo!" She said happily, smiling at him as she bounced into class, doing a spin as she plopped down next to a few others. She glanced around and noticed the girl from earlier. "Hey! It's you again!" She said, smiling at her warmly.

"So it's Calculus first. As if school wasn't dull enough. Seriously, why can't we have more significant lessons? Social studies? Optional financial courses"?

After Shannon had dolled up, she was on her way to Calculus. At least she still had Motörhead to freshen up the mood. Hellraiser, specifically. Except she'd unplugged her earphones, so Lemmy's gravelling voice and guitar riffs flooded the corridor. She only turned the track down when she was at the classroom door. As she entered, she plugged her earphones back in, strolling to her seat and familiarizing herself with the view of the classroom.

As Ellie walked into the classroom she flashed a quick smile at the teacher and then scanned the room to find a seat. She sighed a little as it seemed everyone had already sat with their friends and it would seem weird if she went and just joined. As she walks pat the two girls chatting she smiles lightly but then continues walking until she reaches an empty seat towards the back of the class. All the seats around her were somewhat empty other than a girl she recognised but still didn’t know the name of. Ellie was fairly smart so she wasn’t too worried about the lesson. But she knew that she definitely wasn’t as smart as some of the others.

One by Metallica filled Shannon's ear, keeping one earphone out so she could hear Mr. Angelo. She respected her teachers, although her attention on the subjects they teach dissipated a little with every lesson. Apart from a few crucial subjects, she found the others quite insignificant. Her foot tapped incessantly as she couldn't bob her head back and forth without drawing undue attention. Although a scowl embedded itself on Shannon's fatigued face as she wasn't sure if she had cleaned up all the beer bottles from last night's fiasco.

"If not, I am fucked beyond belief".

(( jaylen jaylen I meant Sam was neighbors with Faith in terms of where they sat in class lol. And I thought her hair was pink. Either way, I'll just roll with it.))

"Oh, well that's good," the redhead said, leaning back in his chair with his hands behind his head. "As long as you weren't home." Of course living next door to Faith, he heard all the yelling and the sounds of various things breaking. Part of him wanted to tell someone about it, but his parents told him it was a bad idea. After all, Faith might have ended up in a worse place if that was the case.

"I was working most of the time," he said. "Mickey D's is giving me a lot of hours on the weekends now since school's back in session. If that wasn't the case though, I'd have definitely invited you out." He flashed her a grin before sitting upright again when Mr. Angelo started the lesson.

He was pretty attentive while the man taught, and copied down whatever was important into his notebook while working on the practice problems. As the teacher lectured, another boy passed them by, just simply greeting them. Sam gave a smile and nod in response before returning his attention to the work in front of him. When the guy was out of earshot, he once again turned to Faith. "That was new, huh? Usually that guy's super cold and distant," he whispered.

Joycelyn sighed through her nose as she slid from her car, an old beater with a shoddy paint job. It had been the only thing she could afford. Even with the peeling paint and the creak of the old hinges, she was content with the fact that she finally had a car. No more riding the bus or waiting for her mom, knowing she would probably get home after the sun had already left the sky. A quick glance at her phone revealed she had a few minutes to spare before she needed to head to her first class, serving as a TA for a sophomore English class. It wasn't the most ideal situation, but she had spare time due to the limited amount of classes she was taking this year. Instead of being allowed to leave after lunch, she had been given filler classes. It was frustrating that she couldn't get volunteer hours in, but she hadn't been given any other options. Running a hand through her hair, she sighed before making her way into the school.

While passing the office, the secretary caught her eye. Gesturing her forward, Joycelyn forced herself to enter the room. She knew the secretary was an older woman who talked a lot. Joycelyn eyed the clock, watching the minutes ticked by. She didn't want to be rude, even as the older woman continued to prattle on about her niece's dance recital. It wasn't until the bell rung that the older woman realized the time. Handing her a pass and a stack of papers she was meant to deliver to one of the junior teachers, Joycelyn left the office. As she walked, she couldn't keep herself from yawning. She had been woken up that morning by her dad pounding on her bedroom door. She had spent two hours of her day prepping food and scrubbing down floors. She hadn't complained. She knew just how intense her father was when it came to her and her siblings helping him. Her mother had been kind enough to slip her an extra cup of coffee on her way out the door.

Walking down the halls, she studied the post-it note that had held the classroom number. She knew the teacher- he had been decent last year, knowing how to articulate his thoughts and explain the material. She had gotten an 'A' in his class, although it hadn't been a surprise. Math classes were always her favorite. As she neared the door, she registered the sound of his voice. The lesson had already begun. Checking her phone once more, she groaned silently once she registered the time. She was late as hell. Her hand reached for the handle, turning the knob and slipping inside. She stood in the threshold for a moment, awkward as Mr. Angolo turned his attention towards her. He looked curious, already offering her a friendly smile.

"Sorry to interrupt, sir." She flushed, stepping forward and pressing the stack of papers into his hands. "Ms. Lang told me to give you these."

What the hell am I gonna say to Mum if she finds out I drank all her beer and got smashed?

Shannon compiled a list of potential excuses in her head, ranging from friends coming over to sleepwalking. However, she knew she'd have to come clean. She could make a dozen excuses for her actions, but she had too much respect for her mother to bullshit her. And she aimed to make a good example for her sister. She'd done a few already; Getting her into Metallica was a good start, as well as all their albums she'd lended to her. But she wanted to make sure she didn't end up in the gutter and be a true sister to her.

Ellie instantly regretted sitting further away from everyone as it meant she would most likely be sat alone for the rest of the lesson. Oh well at least she could focus, Calculus wasn’t exactly her strongest subject. She sighed as she began pulling things out of her backpack and onto her desk.

Katerina was ignored, much to her sadness, and she sat in ailence, listening to the conversation on her right and faint metal to her left. It wasn't bad, she didn't mind the music, but she listened more to other genres. She sat rather quietly and took notes, her foot tapping a slower and quiet pace than the woman to her left.

Fracture by Veil of Maya greeted Shannon's ear, much to her delight. She couldn't help but mouth the words and move her head a little. By God, she needed more metalhead friends. To her, everyone else listened to manufactured Pop music. By God, she despised Pop music. Modern Pop anyway. Searching through her backpack, Shannon, mentally, sighed. Looking around, she leaned over to the girl on the right, tapping her arm gently.

"'Scuse me, do you have a spare pen"?

Faith turned to see the girl from just a couple minutes ago. She knew Katerina from the Library within the town, seeing as they both worked there. She was a relatively nice person from what Faith had gathered, though they didn't talk much. She waved her hello to her before quickly turning back to Sammy, more interested in what they had to say. "Oh okay. That's fine! Maybe we could study together over the week." She suggested, hoping that didn't come off weirdly. Studying was a hobby of hers, strangely enough. They could do it at the library while she worked the desk seeing as nobody really went there anyways with access to google and all.

The lesson started and Faith sat attention. She made sure to take the proper notes and do the work so she wouldn't have any for homework tonight. That always sucked. She wasn't so focused to not notice the guy leisurely walk into class. She lifted her head and smiled back at him in response to his simple greeting. It was pretty strange, to be honest. She watched him until Sam had leaned over and whispered to her. "What? Yeah. I didn't take Blake as the nicest guy in school but I guess he's pretty alright." She responded, keeping her voice low enough so he didn't hear. "Maybe he got an attitude change over the summer." She added, smiling at her friend, before sitting up again and getting back to work.

[sorry for the late reply, i've been super sick.]

Alex stepped through the front door and was greeted by Assistant Principle Reese.
"Glad to see you made it today Alex."
"Well that makes one of us sir" Alex smirked playfully and AP Reese shook his head.
"I guess you thought you'd come in late because you have..." AP Reese paused to think, "Photography right? Isn't that your first class?" Alex's eyes widened in shock but he wasn't sure whether he was more surprised that he was caught, or more surprised that Assistant Principle Reese actually remembered something.
Alex stammered. "No sir, I'm not fooling around this year, I actually have uh...Calc-Calculus!" Alex blurted out the first class he could think of and grinned as hard as he could, hoping AP Reese wouldn't catch his bluff. The Assistant Principle's radio crackled to life right as he opened his mouth and he checked to listen to what the chatter was all about.
"Oh damn, another kid puked in the cafeteria. I told them to get rid of those breakfast burritos. Well let me escort you to your class and I'll go handle this."

Assistant Principle Reese lead Alex all the way to Mr. Angelo's classroom, who was a really cool teacher even though the subject he taught was far from relaxing.
"I can take it from here Principle Reese...don't you have to handle the vomit problem?" Alex didn't give AP Reese a chance to respond before quickly stepping into the classroom. "Hey Mr. Angelo...AP Reese thinks this is my first period...do you mind if I stay here just for a bit?" Mr. Angelo chuckled and nodded, gesturing for Alex to take a seat. Alex searched the room for anyone he knew and happened to see all of his good friends gathered around. Most of them were kids from his neighborhood
"Hey guys! Mind if I sit with you? I convinced Principal Reese that this was my first class."

Blake didn't have to even turn his head to know that somebody was looking at him. Lost in thought he was startled when a boy came into the class, but after that paid no attention to him. " Maybe I should try to make friends" he said murmuring to himself "Maybe with friends I can keep my mind off of that day, July 18."
