"Journey To The West"-Type RP(Simple Stats & Dice System)

Welcome (*U*)

Before you read any further, I want to warn you that if this happens, it will be my first RP as a GM. It will also be my first Dice RP. Knowing that, I totally invite those that are also new and curious about Dice RP to get involved in addition to more experienced ones.

If that did not cause you to click/tap/voice command/swipe "Back", then the next part to let you know about is that this RP would be intended to be on the more detailed end of casual. Preferably, each post should provide some insight on your character, even if just a small detail.

Lastly, I have no idea what the interest in this would be, but I intend for it to be a medium sized role play at the maximum. This is because I plan to keep a fairly consistent posting order, so people aren't left behind.

I have an idea for a "Journey to the West"-type role play. For those that don't know about Journey to the West, it is about a monk that literally takes a journey to the west(Asia) with a small group of guardians in order to obtain divine scriptures. Along the way, they sometimes stop to help exorcise demons, stop to escape a trap they fell into, or just stop and relax(but those parts are never told, too uninteresting probably). The anime/manga Inuyasha sort of captures the "terrorized by a local demon" type atmosphere if that helps. A game that is similar to this journey-type RP could be Final Fantasy X.

Anyways, the role play would be like that. In some fictional fantasy-world continent, a group will escort a priestess across the continent. Throughout the journey, many different lands, cultures, and adventures will be experienced. Here are some features I plan to provide:

  • Character Growth & Development - Simple Stat System(Atk, Def, Agi, HP, MP, etc)
  • World Map - As the role play progresses, a world map will be updated(So easier to visualize what we have gone through(*U*))
  • Opportunities to Lead - The nice thing is there will always be a new quest, a new city, a new dungeon, a new area to experience. Whenever someone has an idea, they can PM me and we could line that up to keep the RP moving with ideas(no writer's block for new arcs)
  • Easy Entry/Exit - Since some may either want to drop out or even start a new character, the next town/quest/arc would be a convenient place to coordinate any changes to the roster without permanent removal

The main spark that starts this blazing adventure would be a priestess having a divine mission to obtain some divine thing somewhere on the opposite side of the massive, dangerous continent. The continent is so big, that there are "oceans" or lakes that could pretty much be a sea/ocean. Floating islands, mysterious natural phenomenon, and monsters of all sorts plague the overworld. There is magic of the elemental nature including "dark" and "light" magic. There is no "main race", but if we all play humans or something close, I don't mind either. Physical prowess will grow as our party experiences more, and difficulty of enemies will be scaled accordingly so its not a OP-fest.

And now, a compelling reason to help this priestess. The starting city, a bustling and prospering theocracy, is under attack from a nomadic army utilizing demons as minions. These demons are massive and ridiculously overpowered against even the strongest warrior or mage the city could offer. The priestess was sent to one day free the citizens from slavery(that army would enslave those it conquered either as an outpost for the future or to travel along with them). The initial adventurers all have some reason to come along with the priestess, whether it be freeing captured family, revenge, temporary safety(to escape the invasion), or just out of good will(rare).

That said, the majority of the role play would be adventure and the day of justice might never come(if the RP dies out/never starts), but if we reach some point and everyone feels its time, we could end it with a great victory maybe (*U*)(*U*)(*U*)

If you are interested in a fantasy-genre group adventure across a massive continent full of danger, excitement, treasure, and wonders, please state your interest below. All suggestions, questions, and concerns are welcomed :5/5:

Yours Truly,

This could be fun. I've not got time to join, but can perhaps advise.

Are you using a commercial dice system, or are have you tried to make your own?

@Grey Thanks and no, I am not using a commercial system. Is there one for a more simple RP? The dice wouldn't be the main focus but more of an outcome decider for battle only and other stuff is just between role player deciding. Sort of like a JRPG if that makes sense.

Hrm. FATE Core and FATE: Accelerated are free to download, and would allow you to do what you want quite simply without demanding too much work from you.

I'm definitely interested. Are you envisioning races of any kind, like Final Fantasy or other similar JRPGs? Or is this more rooted in the Asian mythos of Journey to the West as a whole?

There would be less emphasis on traditional western fantasy races like elves, dwarves, and such. I would say probably more Final Fantasy/JRPG-like. There are definitely demonic creatures and evil spirits that will plague the land so our group would probably help people out along the way, fight for survival when ambushed or trapped by demons/youkai, and also make allies along the way. It is this aspect that would be very similar to Journey to the West.

Final Fantasy meets Journey to the West yet not a specific crossover would be how I would describe it in one sentence.

I am quite interested as well! It seems all the better that you're new to GMing and using dice in roleplays as I have very little experience with such but want to try it out. On another note, I'm curious if there will be fantasy races, I'm not really familiar with Chinese mythology though if I recall in Journey to the West there was Su Wo Kong that was basically a magic monkey with a staff that could expand and shrink in size I also believe that was the inspiration for Goku, I think there was also an anthropoid boar but that is as much as I can call from the back of my mind.

This sounds like something I could get behind, so, sign me up!

And I'm familliar with the Journey to the West story though I'm still interested in knowing more about what races are there, in general. Other than that, totally up for it.

Time for the experiment. I'm quite curious to dice roleplay, as it is the first time I tried it. I would much like to join if that is possible?
