What is the terrain like? Almost every post apocalyptic game/ movie is a desert or such.

@Achilles676 The terrain is more muddy, because while the living grass was vaporised in a super-clean nuclear explosion, the ground was perfectly untouched, and actually, in rarely-travelled areas, it has little holes where roots used to be, it is quite fascinating and horrifying in it's implications. Deserts are wastelands, grasslands are mud-lands, and forests are bumpy, muddy areas with maybe an occasional lucky blade of grass or lone slug, and urban locations are concrete mazes.
The nuclear blast was from none other than America itself (what, you thought it was Russia?), a new idea, a prototype of the bomb was accidentally detonated near the Middle East, which literally scrubbed the area clean of life, and caused a WWIII.
Japan was the first to react, being the victim of the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They traced the bomb to originate from America, and launched a counter-attack, they had a similar design, but smaller and more noticeable, big bathtubs with terrifying signals on them. The bombs were, again, accidentally prematurely detonated, destroying the crew on the plane, and causing more than a firework above Canada, and, through a domino effect, the world was mostly scrubbed clean. The survivors are left to try to survive on what's left of the world.
