  • There was indeed some truth to Deliverance's ever logical words. But equating Farah's situation with such an analogy seemed a bit... hm. It felt like he was oversimplifying things? Ninelle only grew more perplexed the more she thought about it, so she could only cast the matter aside temporarily.

Still, Ninelle found herself growing more puzzled the more she learnt about Deliverance, or well, the more she heard him speak, so much so that she almost wanted to just dig at his brain to see what was inside. But, she was logical enough to know that now wasn't the time for that sort of irrelevant interrogation. Until the child was saved, the heart was destroyed and they were outside again safe and sound... she would hold her curiosity back.

Watching the elf step atop the woven platform, Farah seemed thoughtful for a moment, deliberating something before she suddenly spoke up. "...May I ride as well?" She inquired cautiously, just before the little fairy took off. "Oh, sure." Though surprised by the question, Ninelle quickly replied with a little nod, allowing the phoenix to step on before cautiously flying onward. At first, she merely practiced lifting herself off the ground and moving side to side to test the stability, but before long, she was off, slowly fluttering over the bridge across to their destination.

How to say it... it was kind of... fun. Though she never got a chance to ride one, Ninelle mentally equated the experience with driving a toy race car with two passengers in the back. It was amusing and not that tiresome at all... or at least, that's what she was trying to brainwash herself with in order to ignore the sickness rising in her stomach. It was very gradual, almost imperceptibly so, but Ninelle was unaware that she was slowly lowering herself as time went on, growing closer and closer to the ice bridge below as the nausea caught up with her.

Not all was well in that expansive cavern either. A familiar, frightening hum suddenly rose in volume, piercing both Ninelle and Deliverance's ears as they realized what it meant. Above the platform they were headed towards, two sentries suddenly glowed white and made themselves known, their whole bodies visible due to Farah's bright and warm golden light. Stationed on either side of the roof, and hanging upside down from the ceiling, their heads spun maniacally as they charged their cores. Alarmingly however, something was different. The volume was rising too rapidly, and the light was brightening too quickly. Before any of them knew it, the lasers had already been shot, and were each flying straight towards Deliverance and Farah respectively.

Farah remained calm. There was little time to explain or do anything, but with a sudden flare of orange light something materialized before the phoenix, a magma-coloured orb that trembled and floated before her. With a swish of her wings, the orb was sent into Deliverance's hands. But before he could process the matter, Farah then pressed a wing to the elf's back, causing a ripple of blazing mana to invade his body and engulf the scholar's own. "Channel what I have given you, and show me your magic." Was all she said, flicking her gaze back to the incoming laser beams.

He was surprised when the Phoenix wanted to join the ride. Was it due to Ninelle's assumption that she was far weaker than expected being correct? Likely so. For a moment, he worried the phoenix's presence wouldn't burn down the vines. That would be rather unfortunate. Luckily enough, none of that happened.

All his other hypotheses were proven correct the moment new enemies showed up. He clicked his tongue, figuring he'd have to cast his magic in full, break his catalyst and probably get hurt by the result of doing so. Even so, that was likely what it took to destroy or at least halt the sentries' attacks. That's why they'd still need him to be along for the ride. The aid from the phoenix confirmed as much, she needed him to cast his magic. Considering this was their unspoken pact, he'd fulfil his duties and go all-out. Perhaps they wouldn't leave him be if he were to take himself out in the process, based on their honour or the likes? That'd be good.

Either way, he cast [Ethereal Blight D] at the sentries (2 and 3 to each respectively), hopefully countering their lasers and possibly even destroying the things themselves with the aid of the Phoenix's fire through his veins and the magma orb that melted into the colourful ethereal blight orbs of his own.

Ninelle (#54d1b0)
  • Encased in her own handmade cage, Ninelle could do nothing to aid her companions, unless she wanted to send them flying into the spike-trapped abyss below. Additionally, she was already spending all her focus on maintaining the barrier and driving forward stably. Only able to hear the crack in the air as the lasers were shot, she closed her eyes momentarily, praying for a good outcome for those that rode her flying carpet.

    Combat Round 1:
    Sentries vs Deliverance/Ninelle
    Sentries' Attack: 7
    3 (Int D) + 2 (Internal Catalyst E) + 2 ([Quickfire] E)
    Deliverance's/Ninelle's Defence: 8
    4 (Int C) + 1 (Catalyst F) + 3 ([Ethereal Blight] D)
    ---
INT stat used is too high for Catalyst grade by 2 points.
1 point is taken to destroy the Catalyst. (Catalyst F -> Broken)
1 point is damage taken by Deliverance as a result. (HP: 2 -> 1)
    ---
Farah used Skill Loan D to pass Deliverance her Fire Blight D, which coursed through his veins and was utilized in his Ethereal Blight D ability. Hence:
+3 to damage from Farah's skill lent Fire Blight D
+1 to damage due to the sentries' elemental weakness against Fire
    ---

    Damage to Sentries: 5
    Sentries' Armour: 2 -> 0 (E -> Broken)
    Sentries' HP: 3 -> 0
The outcome was fast and explosive. Deliverance's mana veins burned as a power that did not belong to him coursed through, infecting the bright rainbow orbs he summoned forth with internal flames. Iridescent rainbows and flickering sunset hues merged together, barrelling through the lasers head on relentlessly before colliding with the sentries themselves in a thunderous boom.

When the grey-ish blue smoke dispersed, small craters were left behind in the roofs where the sentries lay, with cracks and rocks crumbling beside their broken bodies. The sentries heads blinked and jerked erratically before also combusting, widening and weakening the craters left in each corner of the roof.

The resultant shockwave swept the trio, even the barrier-encased Ninelle as the platform shook minutely from side to side. Fortunately however, she stood strong, as she fluttered over and managed to land weakly in the center of their destination platform, the cage dispersing as she lay flat on the ground.

Deliverance's jade pendant completely shattered as the overwhelming spell was channelled through it. Though it still hung loosely around his neck, its centrepiece was now only a mess of dull fluttering shards. The mana backlash hit hard, disrupting his internal organs as blood trickled from his mouth.

Additionally, the mana drain quickly took hold, as lethargy and nausea bubbled up within him like a tidal wave, making the world fuzzy and wobbly. He could move, but it was as if he was heavily drunk, making the world almost spiral out of control with each step.

After briefly checking on the pair of exhausted fae, Farah turned back to Deliverance, blinking at him in thought. After a moment, she piped up to say something, but her words were cut off as the cavern rumbled and howled, the cracks on the ceiling widening beyond repair as the sky began to fall on them, accompanied by ice and rock in increasing sizes.

Farah's neutral expression was immediately wiped away. Picking up the fairy with her beak, and wrapping her vaguely warm, flame-licked tail around Deliverance's wrist, she quickly flew, heading towards the only cavernous exit that brought with it a faint blizzard of snow and ice.

For a short moment, he felt great. The fire-power coursing through his veins burning like it hadn't before made him experience near-ethereal feeling of might. Blasting away the sentries like it was nothing, even leaving behind craters, made him feel more in charge of the situation than he expected too. After all, he was still dangling above a death-pit thanks to a tiny fairy's magic. He was painfully reminded of that fact when he nearly lost his footing due to the shaking of the platform.

What did make him loose his footing, however, was the drawback of having used that much power. The euphoria of casting powerful magic was short-lived as the pain from the mana backlash was brutal and unforgiving. He coughed, sensing the taste of blood on his tongue. This is nothing. I've had worse. Pain is just a warning sign, not a problem. He convinced himself with the same words he'd use many times before, both in this life in and in the past. Whilst he was in no way 'resistance' or 'resilient' to pain, he had grown accustomed to show as little as possible of it.

After all, there was no better way of stopping a mad wolven beast master from clawing at him in anger than showing no sign of pain. It got boring if he didn't cry out. It's why, even in this entirely different situation, he automatically fought with every fiber in his body to abstain from showing any sign of pain and discomfort. Sadly enough, the mana drain was more than just discomfort. It made moving far more problematic.

He wondered if he'd guessed correctly. Would the other two honour their 'deal' and help him continue, or would they do the logical thing and leave him be for the dead weight he'd become? As if on instinct, he tried moving on his own, to show he wasn't fully done yet, just in case, but the world seemed to take on a life of its own. The walls twisting, turning, dancing. Ah. He suddenly remembered. This was like when they forced him to test a batch of heroine in his past life. The horrible feeling of being out of control mixed with an odd sense of acceptance. He hated it, but his body wished desperately to just give into it. How annoying.

That's when he spotted the cave crumble. Was that going to be it then? Perhaps. To his surprise, however, he felt himself dragged along by the wrist. He'd try to run along, being guided by the Phoenix. Or was he just kicking air? He couldn't quite tell. Not where he was going, not how he was going there, but he did his best to struggle to come along. After all, he'd yet to find the ethereal. How could he die a second time without achieving his goals? It wasn't permissible. Not to himself, not to the deity that'd allowed him this chance.

Ninelle (#54d1b0)
  • For Ninelle, the world was a muddle. Moving shapes and thunderous sounds overwhelmed her senses, but it strangely all felt so far away and fuzzy, as if everything, including her own body, was disconnected from herself. With her limbs refusing her orders, she could only dazedly stare as things fell behind them, not quite comprehending what was happening as she was suddenly plucked and dragged outside.

It was only when a soft snowflake attacked her face that she suddenly woke up. Having her torso tightly gripped by a phoenix's beak wasn't the most pleasant experience, but it was warm, as the fairy felt some of the stiffness plaguing her limbs melt away. Once released, Ninelle landed herself on a pile of snow to fix her slightly crooked wings as she took in their new situation.

As hinted at by the weather, the trio were outside now. The cavern entrance was now sealed by a barricade of fallen boulders & stalactites, but even from out here the structure they just exited was huge, with ginormous stone walls stretching far and wide behind them. Other than that however, there was nothing but an endless sea of snow in all directions, stretching as far as the eye could see whilst accompanied by a soft snowstorm. It was a desolate sight.

"You were meant to use that orb to channel your mana." Farah's usual, authoritative tone broke the silence, as she cast her gaze towards the disorientated elf she had just released. "But it's fine. In case of more adversaries, you may keep it for now." She pondered briefly, before re-summoning that orb of fire and flames and tossing it into the elf's hands.

Ninelle's attention towards their new environment was drawn back by the discussion, as she slowly recalled the vague things she had heard back in the cavern. "Ah, did any of you get hurt? I heard the lasers, but didn't see what happened." She explained thoughtfully. Having recovered her bearings, the fairy quickly fluttered around both Farah and Deliverance, glad to see no tell-tale sign of searing or blood, at least, until she noticed the crimson smears on the elf's jaw, as well as the shattered emerald fragments that had followed him here on his cloak. "You..."

In the end, she merely bit her lip, not saying a word. Turning her back to the pair, she carefully removed her mask for a moment and welled up her tear ducts. Quietly coalescing the slow-forming tears, she moulded the glowing liquid into the shape of a singular, central ball before sparing a hand to put her mask back on. Calmly turning back, she fluttered to her fellow fae's side and pressed the translucent ball against the back of his hand, allowing it to melt into his skin and bring with it a gentle rejuvenation. "Good job back there." She smiled finally, before her thoughts diverged back towards pondering their next steps in this seemingly endless tundra.

He blinked a few times, trying to focus his eyesight on what in the world was ahead of him. The words echoed through his head as the Phoenix spoke them, as he tried to make sense of them. “Yes...” He eventually replied. Something about channelling his mana through an orb? He could do that, if he didn't feel so awfully tired. He was barely able to catch the orb, as the back of his mind feared the fire whilst the rational part of him told him not to do so. In the end he managed to both catch and hold-on to it, but it felt like one of the greatest achievements he'd made this day.

As he heard the fairy asked if anyone got hurt, he could hear himself speak before he even thought about what to say. “I'm fine.” He spoke, his voice sounding cold and empty, like he'd said those words a thousand times before with an equally lacking amount of meaning behind them. He wasn't even sure why he'd lie about it. Had it become second nature? Probably. Was it for the better? Probably. They'd brought him along, he shouldn't make them regret it or get second thoughts about it.

To his surprise, however, he could see and feel the fairy cast some magic on him. “Why?” Wait. That was meant to be a thought. Had he just said that aloud? That was... not ideal. He'd need an excuse. Right. He had one. “It might be better to conserve your energy. This prison is leeching enough of it away from us as-is.” Yes, that wasn't even a lie. He could still feel exhausted from just the bit of magic he'd cast.

As for her telling them 'good job', he did have a proper reply for that one. “Thanks for getting us across.” At least that part was easy. A common sign of gratitude shown for favours granted. Come to think of it, he might as well extend it. “And thank you for lending me your magic.” He'd add, extending his gratitude towards the Phoenix as well.

  • "Don't lie." Frowning, the words escaped her without a second thought. "This isn't the kind of situation where you should pretend you are fine." She scolded with a relatively light and gentle tone, not wanting to offend his good intentions, but that didn't mean she meant her words any less. She could understand his feelings. But out here, all they had was each other. The thought of losing any one of them due to something like hidden injuries seemed both foolish and heart-breaking.

"You don't have to worry about me. This is an innate ability of mine, one that doesn't use mana or magic." She explained briefly as he questioned her, carefully watching the elf's pallid state return to colour. "So don't hide your wounds from me, alright?" She advised cheerfully, in a manner akin to her usual lively self, not quite wanting to share the details of her healing limitations in case it gave him reason to hide his injuries again.

At his stoic words of thanks, Ninelle merely smiled as she returned the favour. "And thank you for protecting us." On the other hand, Farah merely huffed and turned her head aside. "We all played our part, there's no need for thanks." She stated simply, turning her head from side to side as she scrutinized the area.

"How strange, I feel his presence nearby, but its very vague... I can't discern a direction." The phoenix muttered beneath her breath, with genuine frustration and worry seeping through her tone. "I only saw him for a moment back then, in a flash of purple. But do either of you know more of his details?" She inquired somewhat hopefully, as the snowstorm began to slowly grow in intensity and melt into her dull flames.

In response, Ninelle could only shake her head. "All I know is that he's a mycelious like his father. I don't think Deliverance would know much more, since he didn't come to search for the child like I did..." She trailed off in thought, wondering if they'd have to search and dig aimlessly to find him...

But almost like an illusion, Deliverance would notice something. A fleeting hint of lavender passing through the growing hail of snow. It seemed to lead somewhere quite high, above mounds and rocks of snow against the outer walls of the cavern. Perhaps such a sight, would stimulate a memory.

Don't lie? What kind of response was that. Pretending? Was he pretending? Right... yes. He probably was. Although it was odd. Normally, people didn't care to find out the truth, much less to point it out like that. He wasn't sure if he felt angry at being called out or surprised that someone cared to do so. In the end, he realised neither of those emotions was all that present to begin with, as he was mostly just tired. Tired of this confusing and exhausting trip. “Very well. I'm not fine, but better now.” He eventually replied, figuring he'd tell her what she wanted to hear.

That said, he didn't believe her at all. Healing like that without mana or magic? Surely that only existed through actually operating someone. Whatever she did must've been some form of magic, just one he wasn't aware off. On the topic of not hiding his wounds, he merely nodded. He'd been hiding his wounds all his life, so he wasn't sure if he could stop doing so all of a sudden. At the very least, he might be able to suppress the instinct to lie about it. He'd never been good at lying anyway.

His attempt to show gratitude didn't go too well. Ninelle just thanked him back and the Phoenix brushed it off. It was odd though, as he felt like the Phoenix played the biggest part there, dragging the both of them out when they would've otherwise gotten caught up in the aftermath. When the Phoenix mentioned a 'him', Deliverance didn't even realise who she was talking about for a moment. It was only when Ninelle responded that he figured out that it was about the missing kid. “Long-eared, purple hair, a white-spotted purple mushroom cap. Trapped by some frozen vines.” He summed up. That was all that he recalled about the short vision of the 'child' that he'd seen at the start of all of this.

Oddly enough, it was as if he saw the same purple the moment he mentioned it. “The same purple as that over there.” He pointed at where he saw the purple glow through the snow. He knew it might be an illusion, but at that rate, it might also be an illusion from the kid itself, so it was probably worth mentioning. That's when he saw just how high the area he'd pointed towards was. Either way, that was probably where the kid was at, wasn't it? He wondered if he could track the essence he'd spotted and felt, but with his mana this drained already, he wasn't courageous enough to try and find out.

Ninelle (#54d1b0)
  • Deliverance's words stunned the both of them, but it was especially so for Ninelle, who was well aware that he had come here to merely study the mutated plaguebearing heart. So how on earth did he know so much about the child's appearance and situation? "You... wait, how do you know that?" She stuttered in disbelief. Confusion and shock somewhat clouded her mind, but she couldn't ignore the ominous foreboding that came with it. Had he... lied to her all this time?

At that thought, she froze in place with widened eyes, quietly staring at him in disbelief. "You know I was looking for him... why didn't you tell me you had seen him earlier? Or that you knew about his circumstances?" She bit her lip, unable to suppress the bitterness welling up in her heart.

Reasoning with herself, she tried to argue that perhaps he was distracted by all the happenings or forgot to inform her, but thinking back to their long initial trek aimlessly through the ice caverns, where he had every opportunity to say anything, she could only feel more betrayed. Did he want to prevent her from destroying the plaguebearing heart that badly? To even delay and gamble with that child's life?

Perhaps her impression of him, one of cute but stoic innocence, had been wrong this whole time. Unable to bear it, the fairy turned away, growing silent as she followed after the phoenix heading in the vague direction Deliverance had pointed towards.

He was a bit confused by Ninelle's reaction. “Didn't you have the same vision when we first fell down here?” There had been no reason to assume that had been exclusively experienced by him, so he'd assumed it was just the kid reaching out to him and Ninelle alike. “Right before the floor caved in and we were pulled into this dimension, I thought he was reaching out to the both of us. I'd have normally considered double-checking, if I hadn't been falling to my death directly afterwards.” He shook his head. “Not that it would've aided us, for what little I did see was far too nondescript to use to locate the child and visions hold very little scientific value to them. All I learned was a possible sighting of what he might look like and a reason to theorise that he was trapped in here, which I believed you were already aware off when you stated you would look for the kid first and an exit second.” All in all, he genuinely didn't get why she seemed so upset. From his perspective, there wasn't the slightest bit of useful information he'd withheld even if he hadn't been living under the assumption they'd both experienced the same vision.

  • "A vision? You were given a vision?" Ninelle was very confused, but fortunately at least, the situation didn't seem as malicious as first thought. "I didn't see anything. All I know is I was sleeping at the time, then I suddenly woke up mid-air and rushed to save you." She pondered whilst scratching her head as she listened to him continue. It was rare for him to speak so much all at once, so she tried not to interrupt him till the end, even if she felt the desire to argue back at times.

Ninelle shook her head in disagreement, but her tone was much less accusatory than previous. "You speak as if it is fact that there was no useful information there. But I think, knowing that he was at least still alive, would've been both greatly reassuring and helpful. Or that he was trapped somewhere by frozen vines." She explained her own opinion quite calmly, before quietly turning toward their phoenix companion. "Even Farah wasn't sure of his life or death." She mentioned simply, as she recalled the phoenix's fearful words when they first met.

She sighed, before smiling in finality. "But it's fine. At least we know now." Let bygones be bygones. She had already long figured out Deliverance was someone on a different wavelength to herself. Though her heart had been held on a tightrope for this lost child, it seemed they would find him soon anyway. What was the point of getting mad at this stage? She'd be able to verify the truth with her own eyes.

As they approached the towering cavernous walls of stone and snow, they finally found him. Tightly wound by vines skinned with frost, the mushroom-capped child seemed to be sleeping, his body subconsciously breathing and moving every now and then to breathe life into his otherwise still body. His head hung low with wandering waves of his lavender hair floating in the snowstorm, bringing colour to the otherwise monochrome world of white and grey. His body was hung in the shape of a cross, restrained high against the cavern wall, his once ornate clothing now quite torn and misshapen. Fortunately at the very least, there was a rocky path that led to him, even if it required quite some climbing and manoeuvring.

    full

Ninelle felt tears well up as she finally placed her eyes on him. How long had she been searching for this child? Days? Weeks? If not for her bout of memory loss, she could be more certain. But all she knew was that it had felt like a long long time. It was no longer just for the deal she made with the deacon, she was just genuinely glad that the child had been found in one piece. Eagerly, she wanted to rush over, but she knew very well with the mere body of a fairy, there was very little she could do physically.

"I'm sorry to ask this after just getting mad at you, but could you help me take him down and maybe carry him? At least until I can check his health and make sure he's okay." She clasped her hands together, turning and pleading hopefully to her fellow fae. "I can owe you a favour after this if you'd like." She offered carefully, somewhat having figured out some parts of the undecipherable elf. At the very least, she knew he did not act on emotion, and liked reason for everything, so she tried her best to give him one.

“Indeed.” He replied, listen to her confirm that she hadn't gotten one of her own. However, her next words still confused. “You'd put so much trust in a mere vision?” Even as a scholar of the ethereal, something barely touch-able and difficult to prove, he'd not instantly assume a vision was an accurate version of the truth. If anything, for as far as he was concerned, the kid might've been dead long before he'd even seen said vision. If he wasn't absolutely lost without anything other to go on, he'd probably not have even considered it worth bringing up.

Although he was rather tired, he sighed. “Very well.” He'd try to climb up and bring down the kid. Although he wasn't sure like she sounded like she was trying to bribe him. Even he, cold as he might be, would at least try to help a kid like this out of his own will. That being said, he was relatively unequipped to deal with these vines, so he'd have to struggle to pull and tear at the right ones.

Ninelle (#54d1b0)
  • "I would, I've been searching for him for days. Anything is better than nothing." Ninelle smiled sadly. "But, you have a point. I was brainwashed by a Chomagra just yesterday, I shouldn't be so trusting." She reflected back on herself seriously, knowing she couldn't expect a strange magic-loving skeleton to just hop out and save her every time.

Seeing him sigh, Ninelle felt her anxiety reach its peak before finally hearing him relent. "Thank you Deliverance. I guess you are kind of 'delivering' him to me huh?" She smiled with a gentle giggle, surprised even at herself for her ability to make jokes and poke fun all of a sudden. Perhaps she herself didn't realize how stretched taut she had been all this time.

As the pair of fae hurried to the child's side, the phoenix strayed behind, causing Ninelle to glance back for a moment.

"With the warmth I give off, though mild, I fear he will get sick if I come too close too suddenly. He must've been stuck out here for a long time." Noticing Ninelle's quizzical gaze, Farah shook her head as she gave her thoughts, straying a slight distance away whilst inching closer with time.

Ninelle simply nodded in acknowledgement before flying off, watching Deliverance tear at those frozen vines with his bare hands. Unlike before with the phoenix, there weren't exactly any well-sharpened stalagmites nearby, nothing but large flat or round rocks tumbling quietly around them with their movements. The elf's hands quickly grew numb, pale and reddish from the constant rough exposure with ice.

It was only once a small pile of torn vines had gathered at Deliverance's feet that the boy stirred, his senses quite obviously numbed from the cold. Though there were mild symptoms of pale frostbite on his extremities, it was nowhere near the level that should be expected for someone stuck in a tundra for days. It was quite strange, but perhaps the strangest thing of all was his ability to stand up perfectly straight once fully released from his cage. In fact, if Deliverance or Ninelle tried to approach too close, or even pick him up, he would gently push them away and avoid their touch.

After a moment of regaining his bearings, the upper half of his face still shielded by the long tell-tale bangs of the mycelious, he spoke, firstly addressing his most immediate saviour. "I sensed you. At that time. Thank you for coming for me. And freeing Farah too." He spoke quietly in short bursts, his voice a little hoarse and painful to the ear, but discernible. It was a little high-pitched too, as expected of a boy yet to go through his voice break.

He wasn't sure what to reply to the fairy, so he took the easy way out and simply didn't reply at all. Upon the mention of him 'delivering' the child, he looked at her puzzled. It wasn't the 'freeing' part that confused him though, the pun on his name was well understood. It was the fact that she was making a joke about it to begin with. “Yes.” He ended up saying, not sure how else to respond to the unexpected comment.

More confusing was the Phoenix worrying about suddenly getting the child sick due to warmth alone. Surely that wouldn't be the case? Wouldn't it be better to warm him up and see how badly of a case of frostbite he might have? Either way, it wasn't his call. He already felt his hands go numb from tearing at these blasted vines. All things considered, however, the strangest part was why this kid was standing so casually. Was he putting up a strong front, like the Phoenix had? That might be an option. Deliverance couldn't tell. “You should thank her instead.” He pointed at Ninelle. “She'd the one who's been intentionally looking for you.” He felt like his role in all of this had been rather minimal.

He wondered, for a moment, what the kid meant by sensing him. Was the vision he'd gained more than just a random mirror through dimensions? Had that been an actual portal of sorts? Perhaps. That said, it didn't matter now. He was far more interested in another thing. “Do you know how we might leave this place?” That was the most pressing concern. He was well-aware that there'd be little to study in his current state, without his tools and with little energy left.

Ninelle (#54d1b0)
  • "I see. The tiny one? Thank you. You must've been the one my father wanted." The mycelious mentioned simply, bowing towards the direction of the fairy in gratitude. Ninelle was lost in thought at this moment, pondering the child's current state, but hurriedly smiled and bowed back as she was addressed. "It's fine. It almost seems as if... you'd have been fine even if I never came at all..." "That's not true." The mycelious lightly shook his head, but did not elaborate, leaving Ninelle to ponder the matter on her own.

Instead, he turned back to the elf to address his question. "Yes I do. But Farah would know the way best. Have you not asked her? Her flames guard the exit." He inquired and explained curiously, noting the weariness and blood stains on the tall elf.

As she was addressed however, the phoenix saw it her moment to step forward. Reluctantly, and with the most hesitation seen from her so far, she spoke up. "Kuruta... I am sor-" "It's fine, Farah. Let's focus on getting out of here for now." The mycelious cut her off lightly with a carefree smile, forcing her to swallow back her words. "Alright."

"Can you lead us? I imagine you better know where your flames lie." Farah could only nod with mixed emotions, leaving them the sight of her darkened tail feathers as she trotted on ahead much like she did before.

    ---

The trek was shorter than expected. After crossing a single ascending mound of snow, the group reached a very strange sight. Blazing flames of sunset hues were scattered across the snowfields, seemingly endlessly fighting with the snow that surrounded them. They were positioned in such a way that they spiralled in intensity and number the closer one walked towards their center, which was where Farah unhesitatingly led them to.

The closer they got to the flames, the more the orange orb in Deliverance's grip vibrated and shone excitedly, gently siphoning the warmth and magic from the flames they passed by. Farah too, was visibly rejuvenated, her flames and feathers growing brighter in colour bit by bit.

Once stationed at the heart, shielded from the elements by grand walls of fire floating atop the snow-topped earth, Kuruta pointed decisively towards the ground.

"All you have to do is blast the ground, with the strongest force you can muster, and this miniature realm will collapse. Whilst it collapses, cracks in space will form, allowing us to return to Lodeli. Just be careful not to enter the wrong spatial crack. If you end up in the frigid plane this heart sources its powers from, you may lose all connection with our original realm with the heart's death, and never return."

"On the other hand, if there's anything left you'd like to do or retrieve here, do so now. There's no going back once this place crumbles."
He warned lightly, turning to the elf in particular. If he did not come here for him, but to look for or investigate something else, he should be certain he had everything he needed.

He remained silent as the purple kid addressed Ninelle, the one he truly owed his gratitude towards. Her question to him, however, confused him. He looked pretty tied up and caught just now, right up until they freed him. How did he not need their aid? It made him wonder. “If I might ask, just what exactly was your entire purpose in all of this?” His curiosity as a scholar got the better of him, as he had a slight inkling there might be a bit more to it, especially if someone like Ninelle was starting to ask questions regarding the need of their aid to him.

At least he could answer why he didn't ask Farah. “It didn't look like she would consider guiding us to an exit before ensuring your safety, despite the fact she claimed you were the one to cause all this to happen.” He explained with the nuance of a bull in a china store. After all, he recalled how she seethed about him distracting her amidst battle, before she'd been able to deal the final blow. She'd seem rather angry at that time, which, in hindsight, made him wonder why they hadn't just left him here. Or why she wasn't scolding him right now, for that matter. He gave up on trying to make sense of it almost instantly.

After a short walk, they were guided through the exit. He listened carefully about the explanations they were given. After all, these were the type of things he wished to learn here. In fact, his face lit up. It seemed his journey wasn't for naught. He might not be able to study the plague-bearing heart, but this kid might be a far more valuable source of information. “I was looking to study the plague-bearing heart, but my lack of tools and the current conditions would not make it a fruitful endeavour. However, it seems you are rather knowledgeable about this realm and the spacial magic at play. If you'd be willing to share your knowledge with me, regarding the workings of this spatial magic, or in particular whether or not it can be used to reach or study the Ethereal, I would be grateful. I'd also have no more need to be here.” He replied, not really caring about whether he'd get his answers in this dimension or back in Lodeli. All he wanted right now was to pry this kid for all he was worth, as he could already imagine the paper he'd be able to write based on this kid's (apparent) knowledge regarding this place. He'd already long forgotten the cold and injuries, as he was looking to what few possession he hadn't lost along the way to see if he had something to write on and something to write with, ready to start taking notes.

  • The elf's first question perplexed the mushroom-capped fae. He seemed to ponder for a few moments before speaking. "I came here to investigate some things about the heart. But I accidentally walked into a fight between Farah and the heart instead, and got caught up in things." He answered vaguely, casting a subtle glance towards Ninelle.

Deliverance's next few words surprised them all, with Kuruta turning towards Farah with a surprised but vague smile. "She's not wrong." He spoke simply, with Farah's face heating up, the flames blazing brighter around her face out of embarrassment. "He did interrupt our battle, and cause me to miss a crucial blow." She scoffed, offended by the fact that it seemed the elf was doubting her earlier words. "But he is also the reason I'm still here. Despite the fact that I-" "Farah." She shut her beak again reluctantly, clearly indignant though she remained obedient.

Watching Deliverance suddenly pace and rustle around, retrieving papers and stationary, the trio wore a mix of amusement and surprise on their faces. Farah was reminded of his interrogation towards her species earlier, scoffing and turning away, whilst Ninelle merely chuckled and smiled before returning to her musings, still pondering her doubts toward the whole situation.

"The Ethereal? I've not heard of that concept before now, but I can share with you what I know." Kuruta smiled gently, though his gaze occasionally wandered towards the glowing orb residing in Deliverance's hands. "As I'm sure you know, it is not rare for a plaguebearing heart to distort space, but the reason for this has always remained unclear. Previously documented occurrences have brought forth phenomenon such as small lava puddles or sandstorms, but for one to summon an entire dimension like this is unheard of." He began gently, unfolding his pale hands now that the warmth of Farah's walls of flame surrounded them.

"In my time here, especially whilst I still had magic to spare, I've learnt a few things. For example, like I said earlier, this spatial space is closely tied to at least two different planes. The one we came from, and some frigid alternate plane. By examining the energies from the space distortions that would occasionally crop up around me, I know this as fact." He explained quietly, looking towards the foreign sky whilst explaining the reasons behind his firm beliefs. "I'm sure you've seen them, the frost-covered vines that flow everywhere throughout this place, even atop the sentries that sometimes pass by. The same ones that imprisoned me and I imagine Farah as well. I examined them before, and sensed that strangely rhythmic pulses of magic energy would pass through occasionally and inconsistently." He continued, unaware that most of what was spoken so far was actually knowledge the elf had already ascertained himself before he had even dropped into the heart.

"However, just after my imprisonment, fleetingly, a powerful and foreign magical energy soared through those vines in the complete opposite direction. With that, I knew the heart was communicating with something somewhere, something much more powerful than the heart itself... My guess is that 'being' remains in that other realm." He reasoned carefully. "If I were to guess, I imagine this plaguebearing heart is an off-shoot of that 'being', planting itself in our realm to absorb magic or perhaps something else..." He trailed off, before seemingly suddenly returning to focus.

Deciding to return to the specifics of what was asked, the mycelious turned back to Deliverance before speaking again. "Regardless, spatial magic, or at least this spatial magic in particular, relies on 'plane anchors', the key connection points between the two realms that allow the planes to coincide. Although the frequent space distortions show the connection between these two planes is not completely stable, it is very strong. The anchor of this connection to our realm is the heart, which allows it to host and wield many features of the frigid plane, but there must be an anchor in the alternate plane as well. Perhaps it is the being that I mentioned... but we shouldn't rule out other possibilities."

"If you have a specific plane you'd like to attain access to, perhaps you should look into examining a method to form or find a plane anchor over there."
He advised, not to sure on what the Ethereal was or how far Deliverance's research had progressed towards it, but trying to aid him regardless.

He was a bit surprised. Both by how well the kid's story lined up with what Farah had told them and by how it seemed like he wasn't the only one that'd been curious about the Plague-bearing Heart. As the mushroom kid admitted his interference by trying to copy Farah's tone of voice and made the phoenix repeat it, Deliverance looked at them a bit puzzled. He really didn't get Farah's reasoning there. It seemed like she had nothing to gain from staying, yet she'd done so for the sake of the kid she accused of causing all this in the first place? In the end, he figured it wasn't worth investigating further.

Instead, he'd managed to take out a notebook and ink pen. Although the ink itself was... frozen. That was not ideal. He eyed Farah for a bit. Surely she wouldn't mind, he figured, as he held his ink-pot above her and next to the orb she'd given him for a bit. Her flames and orb combined should help melt enough of it to start using it again for making notes.

It was a shame that the kid hadn't heard of the Ethereal before. Even so, there was a lot of valuable information to be gained from him. Tired as he was and painful as his hands were from the frost and cold, he bit through it to make as many notes as possible. The kid confirmed his first suspicions instantly, regarding the space-distorting qualities. “So, would it be safe to say this place serves as some sort of gate-way between our plane and the frigid one?” He asked to confirm or reject his newest hypothesis.

He noted he'd sensed the same pulses. “I sensed them as well. They seemed to potentially hold some sort of information, akin to a language even, if not more.” He shared another of his hypotheses. “Did you manage to make any sense of them during your imprisonment?” He asked, clearly eager to learn if the kid had cracked any of that 'code' by now.

The next statement was equally peculiar. “A being? I see...” A being leeching off magic from their realm? That was worrying. In fact, he realised the undeniable dangers of such a creature. What if such a creature would pierce into the Ethereal before he could find it and leech away the magic there? It could destroy the very thing he'd dedicated his life to finding before he could even find it. “If that's true, it must be destroyed.” He'd conclude, his reasoning left unexplained.

The last part confused him a bit. “So, you are saying that someone in our realm has possibly planted an anchor on this side?” That's what he thought he could make out from the doubtful explanation. Although there was one thing he didn't grasp. “So is the heart an anchor with another in the frigid plane and another in our realm, serving as a middle-point between two other anchors, or does the heart stem from either our or the frigid plane itself?” That was something he could use some clarification on.

As for the last part, he sighed. “You're correct, although I fear I have yet to even prove the plane's existence, let alone find it or find a way to anchor it.” It was the sad truth. The Ethereal was still far out of reach. Not that that'd stop him, especially now that he might need to race a magic-eating entity to it.

  • Being used as a warming tool for Deliverance's inkpot clearly peeved the recovering phoenix, but even so, Farah was not cruel enough to deny this small favour towards a saviour, instead choosing to turn her head aside and ignore the whole matter.

"I would think so, especially for us passersby without any connections to either the heart or the plane. But I don't think it's completely necessary for it to be this size. I imagine this realm was widened specifically by the heart to throw beings it could not easily drain magic from in, like us." Kuruta reasoned thoughtfully, taking into account the mana drain and the previously documented plaguebearing hearts which were far more discreet with their spatial magic.

"Indeed, a language makes sense. But unfortunately, linguistics is not my area of expertise, or perhaps I could've figure out more... Either way, that other being never sent another signal back after the first. So I imagine it would've been difficult regardless." He explained steadily, though there was definitely a sense of frustration and loss eminent in his tone.

Hearing Deliverance mention destroying this otherworldly being so readily made Kuruta chuckle. "I agree, but I imagine such things are easier said than done. Fortunately for now at least, I have yet to hear of a plaguebearing heart causing any significant or irreversible damage." He mused thoughtfully, bringing a small hand to his chin. Though young for a fae, with his youthful tone showing as such, he certainly did not speak how a child would.

"No, those are indeed frightening possibilities, but I was commenting more on the idea that the plane anchor on the other side may not be the same being that summoned this heart to absorb our magic." Kuruta tried to explain, carefully thinking through Deliverance's confusion. "I believe that the heart is an anchor made by a being from the other plane, allowing it to connect to this plane as well as absorb our magic. When it is destroyed, the connection with that plane will be cut off... and I imagine whatever the anchor is on the other side will receive backlash as well."

"I believe in you. For you to go to such lengths for your research is something I can empathize with. Just don't give up. Even if it feels like you're chasing crumbs at times. I'm sure you'll find a way."
He smiled in finality, somewhat pleasantly surprised to have met a fellow avid researcher here, though he didn't want to neglect the others too much. "I feel it is time. The cold and the mana drain will eat away at us eventually. Whilst you two still have the strength, please break us out of here. I imagine with Farah's heart in your hands, it will be an easy enough feat." He requested logically, taking another glance toward the glowing magma orb in Deliverance's hands, before beckoning towards the more distant Farah and Ninelle who had left them to it and talked quietly amongst themselves.

Deliverance nodded, took some notes, nodded again, took more notes... and repeated that cycle for a while. There were a few questions he had, but only one of them he wanted to ask right now. “That backlash you mentioned, do you think it'll know it's us who did that?” He wasn't too eager to become the enemy of an interdimensional magic-draining monster. That'd probably get in the way of his research. That said, they probably didn't have a choice by now. He'd just have to be weary.

He was surprised when the kid suddenly mentioned he believed in him. What was that about? “That is my intention, yes.” He replied, unsure of what to make out of the kid's words. His research was his life's goal, so why would he abandon that? It was odd for the kid to mention it in this manner.

He nodded at kid's next words. Getting out of here should come next and... wait. What? “Her... heart?” He looked at the orb in his hands. That was meant to be a heart? It certainly didn't look like one, but he knew very little about Phoenix anatomy. Why in the world would she give him something like that? He tried to cast it at a sentry the moment he got it! He wondered what was wrong with this bird, but shook his head. Now wasn't the time to figure that out.

“Alright, I'll do my best.” What did he need to do again? Right. Blast the ground with the strongest force he could muster. He breathed in deeply. This might get him another dosage of pain and drainage, but if it'd make the realm collapse, he'd at least wake up in a safer place, regardless of whether the others would run off or not. That'd mean his chance of survival and turning all these notes into an excellent paper were high. High enough to go for it.

Using what he now knew to be heart of sorts as his catalyst, he decided to cast Ethereal Blight D onto the ground, as instructed by the kid.

Ethereal Blight D – Magic D, Magic Range F, Magic Targets F, Ethereal [Blight] Affinity, Focus F – Character uses [Ethereal] Blight magic against up to 5 targets within 30 ft. Blight adds 1 damage if effective. Grade D – 2 Post Cooldown.

However, immediately after doing so, he felt a sudden urge he couldn't explain. He held out his hand for the fairy. “Please hop on for a bit. It would be unfortunate if you got lost in a spatial crack.” Her size would make it likelier for her to get caught up in such a thing, he figured. Somehow, the thought of her ending up on the frigid plane instead of the woods was a very unsatisfactory one. Perhaps it was due to the fact they'd have lost against this being or realm? He wasn't entirely sure, but he just hoped she'd hop on so he could help ensure she wouldn't float off into the frozen wastes. He figured the Phoenix and kid could probably take care of themselves, but it did remind him of those movies he saw in his past life. Where someone would stay behind to be all self-sacrificial. He hated those. “You two should hold-on as well.” He commanded, holding out his other hand after putting away his catalyst. Somehow, in perhaps the most 'emotional' manner he'd displayed thus far, he felt a sudden and strong desire to ensure all four of them would get out. One that was rather unscientific, but that he could still not help himself from acting upon. How peculiar.

  • "I don't think it's likely, but who knows what creatures on alternate planes could be capable of. Perhaps it would be good to remain cautious in the near future, just in case." Kuruta replied thoughtfully, tilting his head towards the side. "You can come to Winchelli for help at any time. Though, I imagine a plane-travelling threat would be able to strike you at any time anywhere..." He trailed off distractedly, not really realizing how ominous and foreboding such a statement sounded.

Turning back as Deliverance spoke again, Kuruta smiled lightly at the scholar's stoic affirmation towards his encouragement, before chuckling at his confusion.

"She didn't tell you? That's so like her. Don't worry, it's not as fragile as it looks. Phoenixes are known for their immortality after all." He comforted quietly as their winged allies made their way over.

"So it's time. I'm glad we could both achieve our goals in the end." Ninelle commented, looking back on everything quite positively despite everything that happened. There were many close calls, but in the end, there was no long-term damage, and that's already more she could've hoped for looking back on things.

Closing her eyes, Ninelle forced down the nausea welling up within her center as she sluggishly began to channel her mana once more. Clutching her wand with a pale face, she was caught a little off-guard by her companion's sudden request. "Ah, thank you for thinking of me." She smiled sheepishly, seating herself on his palm and wrapping an arm around his pinky. Watching him proceed to hold his other hand out for the others, she couldn't help but burst into laughter again. "Out of all of us, I didn't think you'd be the one to initiate a protective daisy chain. I'm happy to see it Deli." She grinned, looking back at their ever-stoic scholar almost teasingly. Though she would never admit a small, selfish part of her was a little disappointed, because his kindness was not directed specifically to herself.

    ---

Without hesitation, flaming orbs of iridescent rainbows materialized and clawed into the earth, accompanied by colourful, violent lotuses that exploded on impact. Tall clouds of snow burst forth as the tundra rumbled relentlessly.

Beneath the snow that was blasted, the unearthed stone was visibly cracked and broken, torn into wide and lethal chasms and ravines. The snow had somehow hidden and obscured this earth's wounds, but with the magic barrage, the ground had no choice but to shake and break apart further with a deafening roar. As the earth split beneath them, revealing a familiar sight of dark woodlands, glowing shrooms and dangling frozen lights, space began to crack around them, showing strange landscapes of mountains, glaciers and castles of snow. The spatial cracks weren't consistent, some upside down, some out of proportion, but were multiplying at an alarming speed.

As they began to fall, the spiralling flames that once surrounded them suddenly roared, pouring out of that icy tundra alongside their descent, forming a blazing tunnel that surrounded and corralled them towards Lodeli. At the heart of it all, Farah shone like a beacon, her flames, tail and feathers revitalized into pure golden flame.

After what felt like an eternity, the group holding hands/wing fell onto the grass below, the scattered remains of the heart surrounding them as if it had all been nothing more than a dream.

I like snow. A pleasant little fantasy adventure with mystery and magic balled up together nicely. Quite a bit of detail went into this one. Most of the 1x1's aren't nearly this chunky. Very fluffy all over. Had this been a group rp rather than a 1x1, may have been a bit tiring. Nice to see another rp in the Fae See that leverages the more wonderous nature of the wood and the stuff that dwells in it.
