  • First founded by European settlers in 1613, Cape Fear got its name from the fog that settled over the coast in the early mornings. Despite such an unnerving name, the town itself was rather ordinary, being known more for the crops they were able to grow thanks to the rich soils. As the years went on, however, Cape Fear soon became a fishing community. Since they were settled on the coast of what is now Maine, they had plenty of resources to work with. And for a while, that’s what the town did. The folks were quiet, trying to stay out of the way of other settlements in the area.
  • Some would say the downfall of Cape Fear began in 1692, just after the events of the Salem Witch Trials. Many accused witches fled Salem, finding refuge in Cape Fear. The townspeople tried their best to protect those who had fled. But it wasn’t long until the people of Salem caught wind of where the escapees went. It was early November morning when the town was attacked. Those who had made permanent residence in Cape Fear found themselves being dragged out of their houses with no explanations. A “witch purge” was held in the center of town, with the threat of anyone opposed be suspected of witchcraft as well.
  • Cape Fear, once known for its fishing and crops, was now known for hiding accused witches. The town struggled greatly from these rumors, as no one wanted to trade with such a town. Lucky for them, they were able to trade with local Native American tribes. The two groups exchanged items in return for keeping the other safe. For years, the two groups lived in harmony and the town once again was able to thrive.
  • People from neighboring towns spread rumors of the Cape Fear being cursed. That those who lived there would be met with disaster. "Nothing good comes from living in such a town" they would say. And soon the fog that always settled on the coast would be incorporated into those rumors
  • In 1813, a plague would strike the town, killing many. No one knows what could have caused it, some believed it to be rodents while others believed it to have come from a neighboring town. The already small population of 500 soon dropped to 300 in a matter of months. The remaining people found themselves struggling once again. Many soon moved, believing the rumors of a curse being true.
  • It was also around this time that Cape Fear had its own sort of religious movement. Many of the remaining residents turned to witchcraft, believing their new God would help them to get the town back on its feet. This religious movement further isolated the town from those around them, as well as driving out the residents who wanted no part in such views.
  • It wasn't until the early 1900s that Cape Fear gained popularity in the same way Salem did. As Halloween and trick or treating was becoming more popular, people would flock to the town to experience the history for themselves. The town profited greatly off of this, and the residents leaned into the history more than ever.
  • All good things always come to an end however. With Cape Fear being close to Salem, it soon lost it's splendure. As the years went by, people forgot about the fog covered town. With the tourists fading and unable to support themselves once again, locals packed their bags and left. By the early 2000s, the population had dwindled until Cape Cod was considered a Ghost Town.
  • In recent years, teens and young adults have visisted the town, hoping to catch sight of a ghost or two. Rubbish litters the streets and the buildings are now graffitied and broken into. Supposedly, there are still residents there, though no one has ever seen them. Some say the town has a weird energy to it, almost like there is someone, or something, watching your every move. On especially dark nights, you can almost hear someone humming a lullaby, or smell the smoke of a fire you cannot see.
