Guinevere

There was something in her stomach that didn’t sit quite well with what they were doing. Camilo said that they were only going to pocket all the cash in the safe, he didn’t say that they were going to taking the priceless historical artifacts and figures of the museum itself. Her partner in crime had already taken care of the alarms while the others two rounded up security in another room. Gwen knew that the stakes were higher when she took on this job; however, she wasn’t aware that it would bump her up from petty thief to a wanted felon instantaneously.

Her finger began to shake while operating the circular glass cutter that she’d only seen in movies before. It wasn’t heavy, but it was a lot more complicated than it seemed. Her entire focus was pointed towards making sure she was applying even pressure to the outer blade while maintaining her grip at the suction mechanism in the center. Sweat dribbled from her forehead down the side of her face. It wasn’t everyday that one was face to face with an ancient queen’s headdress and jewels. The rubies and sapphires glinted more so than the brassy gold band where it was inlaid. There were ornamental swirls and patterns that without a doubt only a very skilled artisan would have been able to create. Afterall, this was a part of someone’s legacy and a great display of the wealth and status they had during that time.

Gwen was about three quarters of the way done when she almost leapt out of her skin with the distant gun shots that fired simultaneously.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

As soon as her movements stopped, her partner smacked her shoulder so hard that the blade moved away from its proper path.

“HEY! Stop sleeping and start moving!”

These men that came to her were no ordinary thieves, that much she knew. How dangerously they were, might have required more character assessment on her side. She wasn’t an overly suspicious person, despite, her chosen second profession. Perhaps, her naivety allowed her to believe that these men were men at their word and spoke only truthfully. They said that they weren’t going to harm anyone. They made it sound easy. “It’s gonna be a quick in and out, sweetheart. We just need an extra set of hands since one of our partners bailed on us.” At the time, she couldn’t sense anything remotely malicious about these statements. Despite her initial judgement, the gunshots alerted her that they had far more serious intents than she’d noticed.

She tried to work as quickly as she could handling the headpiece with the utmost care until she found herself at gun’s point. The safety clicked off and immediately she froze at the cool metal rested against her temples.

“Now, hand it over girlie!”

She did as she was told unable to process anything outside the commands. One wrong move and her own lifeless body would be splayed across the museum tiles. The man threw the headpiece into the black duffel bag he’s carried upon his shoulders.

“You didn’t really think you were part of the group did ya?”

Then, he started to laugh. In the quiet of the night, it echoed through the highest ceiling. She felt betrayed as the tears streamed her face and her pulse accelerated ten-fold. She wanted to bite back. She did. She wanted to curse them and their plans. But she held her tongue. Fueling his fire would only hasten her demise.

“We needed someone to take the fall. You, you dumb little bitch. You’re perfect for it.”

She closed her eyes. She started to berate herself for trusting them. How can she be this stupid? Maybe this was karma coming back to her? Maybe she deserved it? If this was how her story ended, she hoped that he would be quick.
