Sometimes, the Hammer regrets their choice of roommate. Before, of course, the worst part of their relationship was pestering them for rent payments and going along with momentary whims. They wish they could go back to that now, but there's no undoing the damage of their walk. The Hammer is now stuck with a roommate chosen by the supernatural, and those yokai seem more than happy to infest their apartment.

The Nail is a flake, sure, but at least they've always been a charming one. Ultimately, they live life based on passing whims; It was one of those that got them and their roommate on a walk in the forest, and another that led to them digging into that suspicious pile of ivy until The Book was in their hands. Now, their whims have once again gotten them into trouble, and for the first time, The Nail might not be able to charm their way out.

The Page lives in the same complex as The Hammer and The Nail, practically next door. The three were never more than passing acquaintances, though, until the appearance of The Book. After all, The Page has never tried to make their love of the supernatural a secret, and they seem to know about every possible occurrence of yokai and spirits in the area; There's no one better to go to for advice. (It doesn't hurt that The Page has an extra room in their apartment, one perfect for a particular spirit that seems keen on sticking around.)

The Book is a powerful object, sought after by many, and it rests in the hands of a weak human. For The Knight, this news is perfect. After all, The Knight is a yokai with their name is locked away in the book, and they can't simply take it by force from the being who has complete power over them. But with a human involved, why use force at all? The Knight has revealed themself to The Nail as a protector, one who will fend off any potentially dangerous yokai that may come after The Book, all for one simple promise: When The Nail dies, ownership of The Book goes to The Knight. For a spirit like them, waiting that long is more than worth it. Since they've made it clear that they won't be leaving, The Hammer has sent them off to live in the spare room of The Page, so they can be close without disturbing the peace in their apartment.

Yokai will only be seen by humans if they want to be. At least, that's true for most; The Eye, though, has always been able to see the world of the supernatural. Since hitting adulthood, it's an ability that they've done their best to hide. Still, rumors spread from time to time, and some have ears keen enough to pick up on them. The Eye has been pestered about supernatural activity by The Page since the two met, but The Eye kept their lips sealed until The Page returned with some new friends who seemed to have a very serious spirit problem on their hands.

The Fang comes from a long line of exorcists, committed to hunting down any spirits who wish harm to humanity. Their abilities to sense and fight the supernatural are weaker than most in their family, and they're often treated as the family disappointment in that regard. So when they heard about an uptick in yokai activity in a certain area, they were determined to find the cause and prove themself worthy in the process. That area was, of course, the one surrounding the home of The Nail, whose possession of The Book has caused many spirits to gravitate toward them. Since finding this information, The Fang has dedicated themself to staying close to The Nail and training their spiritual abilities to take down any dangerous yokai that may come their way.

Roles are not first come first serve! I'll be choosing the best applicant from each role if there are multiple. Don't worry too hard about competition, though; If this ends up having more interest than I anticipated, I'd be more than willing to add or adapt new roles.

There are no real literacy requirements, but multiple paragraphs are preferred; No one liners, hopefully. Similarly, I have no real activity requirements, but if you go multiple weeks without posting or communication ooc, you will be removed. (Basically, if life gets in the way, just let me know!)

Satoshi often seems spacey, like he's walking around with his head in the clouds. What most don't know is that when he seems to be staring off into space, he's usually looking at an unseen spirit. Even so, it really doesn't take the intervention of spirits to make Satoshi act absentminded, and he's already prone to losing both his things and his focus depending on the situation. Still, he always has a positive demeanor, laughing at his own mistakes without fail. It may be that the only thing matching his carelessness is his refreshingly lighthearted disposition.

Before he could walk, Satoshi could see things he wasn't meant to. Some of his earliest memories were of chasing around yokai in his backyard or speaking to stray spirits on his walks home. His parents thought it was adorable, that he had such an active imagination. It stopped being so darling when he started school, though, and as he got older he came to understand that speaking about spiritual activity was simply unacceptable. As he entered middle school, Satoshi swore off any talk of yokai, but it wasn't as if the ability to see them was simply erased; He was still caught talking to empty air from time to time, when he had assumed nobody was around. Regardless, Satoshi did his best to seem normal, and by the time he was out of high school most whispers about his strange behavior had ended. After graduation, Satoshi has bounced around jobs, never staying in one place for more than a few months before he either loses interest or gets fired.

  One late night, the caretakers at an orphanage heard the sound of a baby crying. Once they identified that the sound was not coming from any of the young children within the building, they rushed outside. There, resting swaddled in a pink blanket inside of a basket, was a baby girl. The women were not able to find a note anywhere on the child and so they brought her inside, with no name and no family to claim her as their own. They named her Hanako and she lived at the orphanage for eight years before she was adopted by a couple who were delighted to have her as their daughter.
  
  Her life with her new family was a complete contrast to what her life in the orphanage had been; she got to have a room all to herself and there was no one there to steal her things. She didn't have to worry about if someone was going to steal her food and there were no other kids there to pull cruel pranks on her like locking her in closets just to hear her cry.
  
  For once in her life, Hanako never had to want for anything, her parents doting on her any chance they could get. As she grew up, she took an interest in watching her dad cook in the kitchen and when he felt she was old enough, he started to let her help out. She took to cooking like a fish to water, discovering a newfound passion for the hobby. As the years passed and her parents grew older, Hanako shouldered some of the cooking responsibilities to help ease their burden.
  
  Now Hanako is rooming with The Nail in an apartment and though she gets frustrated when they don't pay the rent on time, she would feel too bad if she kicked them out and they became homeless.   Born as the illegitimate son of a wealthy CEO, Akira's mixed heritage, with an American mother and Japanese father, marked him as an outsider from the very beginning. Despite his parent's eventual marriage (and later, divorce), his father's family never fully accepted Akira and his mother into their fold. Despite the familial dissonance, Akira's early years were marked by comfort and a sense of independence, as he was often left to his own devices.
  
  His first glimpse into the realm of yokai and the supernatural occurred during a childhood encounter that would shape the trajectory of his life. One day, when he was playing near treacherous waters, he lost his footing and was on the verge of drowning, when a spirit came to his rescue. However, when Akira shared this extraordinary experience with others, his words fell on deaf ears as the adults around him brushed him aside.
  
  Akira couldn't let go of what he saw, and as he grew older, his passion only intensified, driving him to study folklore and mythology in college. His thesis became a deep exploration of the supernatural, where he delved into the rich stories surrounding yokai.   Disposition: Mako has intense stranger danger. She tends to avoid meeting new people unless completely necessary. She managed to live sixteen years before making a meaningful connection that wasn’t her twin, and that takes dedication. She’s just extremely wary of people and isn’t good at being casually close with people. She can be polite if needed but her friends are almost always people she’s very connected with or nearly indifferent to. She makes deep connections really quickly when she lets herself so she’s cautious about it. Makoto really loves people, she’s just very scared of letting them hurt her and so she often hurts them first. However, if she comes across someone in need or someone having a bad time she almost can’t help but stop and try to help. She’s made a lot of weird friendships in bar bathrooms this way. She also feels a lot of guilt about taking up people's time and energy, especially when it comes to dealing with things like trauma responses and her anxiety.
  In a friendship or relationship, she’s very different than the coldly polite or intensely rude person she comes across as to strangers. She’s pretty soft and very goofy, and will roughhouse with or fall asleep on top of someone she trusts pretty much anywhere, anytime.   The Hayashi's have been exorcists for generations. Among supernatural circles they're known for their particularly brutal tactics and training. While many of the few who see, sense, or know about yokai have a desire to understand them, or protect humans from them, the Hayashi clan is driven by the belief that anything inhuman is deadly, and must be eradicated with great prejudice if they get too close to humans. They will except nothing less than true dedication and excellence toward this end, two things that Mako has always sorely lacked.
  
  She and her siblings were violently pitted against each other from a young age, a pecking order she always found herself at the bottom of. She was identified as the scapegoat child since she was young. She didn’t show any proficiency that was useful for anything beyond potentially being married off and she was often only desirable as a target for torment when none of her siblings were available. She began flunking her classes and bouncing between reform schools in middle school, where, in her bouts of time away from her family, she realized she had an affinity for music and languages.
  
  Once she reached adulthood, she got as far from the family as possible, but the spirit world apparently didn't get the memo that she'd rejected the family business. Mako was trying to live her new life, doing her best to cobble together rent money each month bouncing between minimum wage jobs and trying to figure out how to make a living as a dancer and a violist when yokai began popping up around the neighborhood. Ayuki is fortunate enough to be blessed with a youthful appearance, which he cleverly knows how to use his to his advantage, often employing his innocent looking face as a distraction in order to navigate his way out of tricky situations. Like a skilled sorcerer, he weaves his wit, knowing all too well that his baby-faced countenance melts hearts and opens doors, a sweet indulgence he cleverly exploits in the face of adversity. Ayuki also possess a compact and agile physique that matches his free spirited nature, while the dark red streaks in his hair accentuate his bold personality.

PERSONALITY:

Ah, Ayuki Kurosawa… Where to begin with this one? With a mischevious glimmer in his eyes and a devilish grin plastered on his face, Ayuki Kurosawa is a young man that is notorious for causing trouble, whether accidentally or not. A reckless fool with childish habits; Unpredictable to most and too predictable to those who know him well, Ayuki has a tendency to give in to his whims easily, often surrendering himself to the temptation of his impulses. Like a compass without a needle, he navigates life by following the whispers of his heart. Ayuki has a very go-with-the-flow attitude. With each passing breeze, he drifts from one pursuit to another. Ayuki’s carefree demeanor is apparent in most aspects of his life. On the outside, he never seems to care too much about anything and has a knack for embracing the absurdity of the world around him. Though deep down, he resents his own lack of motivation and the inherent laziness that plagues him. A paragon of procrastination, Ayuki considers responsibilities and deadlines to be his mortal enemies, avoiding them with the same determination he exhibits in breaking rules. Still, he has enough self awareness to know that he is putting off what’s important and he’s tired of his own reluctance to think seriously about his future, but just like how any other attempt at a serious conversation with Ayuki ends, “That’s a problem for future Ayuki Kurosawa.”

HISTORY:

Ayuki’s birth parents disappeared not long after he was born, effectively declaring him an orphan almost at birth. With no other family members, he was taken in by his next of kin, his aunt, however their family dynamic would prove to be rather tumultuous. Ayuki had a difficult relationship with his aunt; As time passed and he grew up, his aunt and uncle’s disappointment in him grew. They struggled to provide a nurturing environment for Ayuki, as they viewed his whimsy nature and unreliability as a letdown. He was seen as almost nothing but a constant disappointment, and his devil-may-care attitude did not help this perspective to change. Ayuki began to feel suffocated and trapped within the confines of his guardians’ expectations.

As soon as he turned 18, Ayuki’s aunt decided she had had enough, and told him to leave her home. Armed with only the money he had saved up from odd jobs and a meager amount provided by his aunt, Ayuki agreed to leave and quickly left the stifling environment behind. It was a risky move, driven by his desire to find his own path and escape the pressures that had haunted him.

Despite the strained relationship with his aunt, there remains a semblance of connection. Each year, his aunt sends him envelopes of money, a gesture that carries both guilt and a hint of remorse. While Ayuki appreciates the financial support, he remains wary of the emotional strings attached, keeping his distance and refusing to be bound by familial expectations.

Now, Ayuki is a visual arts student. Sharing an apartment with his friend, The Hammer, who has graciously allowed him to live there, effectively becoming Ayuki’s unwitting benefactor. He's not shy about admitting that he's mooching off his roommate's generosity, often relying on their kindness to cover his share of the expenses, as he continues to miss paying the rent on time, what an asshole.
