New York, New York

10:57 P.M.

The first night.

It was especially cold out tonight, the violent wind practically feeling like a knife in your skin, slicing through your flesh and hacking at your bones. You had been walking for a while now, seeming to remember your apartment being much closer than this trek had proved. Making a quick run to the grocery store on foot may not have been the best idea. To keep yourself going, you decided to focus on your feet, watching them trudge through the snow practically by themselves as you attempted to duck under the icy grip of winter air.

Your trudging came to halt when you noticed something glimmering on the white frost at your feet. You crouched to probe this... this... puddle? It, in fact, appeared to be a tiny splash of blood. Your gaze wandered a bit further, and you noticed more of these little dots. Your brow furrowed, and you continued in the direction of your apartment, until the sight of something particularly revolting demanded your attention.

It was an
arm.

Your shaky, cold hand clapped over your gaping lips, keeping a rising scream strictly in your throat.
A gang fight, you thought. A murder.

You ran past it, wanting nothing more than to just get to the safety of your home. Until you saw it. The feasting, half-dead,
thing.

It's been about three months since the public was exposed to the virus, and you've been alone, wandering around for the majority of this time. Perhaps you're travelling with your brother or sister, maybe a friend you bumped in to from high school, or perhaps even your old girlfriend from college.

Either way, you're vulnerable. The things, or most commonly referred to as 'zombies' or 'The Infected', are growing in population every minute. A single scratch or a bite will send you in to a tizzy, before you turn and inevitably become one of them. The process lasts anywhere from an hour to a few weeks, and you've probably witnessed it happen to at least one person, whether it be your mother, or a complete stranger.

Now, the virus itself is believed to be spread through contact; however, it could very well be airborne. No one really knows. But one thing we do know is that the virus does not die with the host. Touching a corpse that was infected could infect you as well, so it would be advised to stay as clean as humanly possible.

Now, to kill a corpse (I know, that sounds quite redundant. Bare with me), you would need to sever the infected part of the body from the rest of them. So, you need to decapitate the corpse in order to keep them down. In other words, cutting off limbs or stabbing them may stun them for a few minutes, but it won't immobilize them forever.

The rumor is that California is safe and has refugee camps, which is where everyone in the East is heading. Of course, it could never be as easy as crossing the entire country! There are plenty of rebel groups and government workers who want to essentially control and wipe out the population, the most infamous group being "E.G.M", or the Eastern Gold-Mine. They recruit those who do follow them, and destroy those who don't. The reasoning behind their attacks and the general formation of the group is quite fuzzy, even to the members. It's usually along the lines of "taking back America" and "reinforcing freedom", but most people will conclude that it's absolute bullshit, and that they just want the power.

You (and perhaps a person you are travelling with) are on your way to California. You've managed this far, but the waves of The Infected are getting larger, and usually resort in you hiding until they pass. You know you need to find a group to travel with, although trusting others is hard to do in this day and age. But you're going to have to try.
