I don't mean to be a downer but unless he's a merman or something of that nature he wouldn't be able to climb. Personally since he grew up in the forest a monkey or cat would better.

He doesn't have a tail. He has legs like a normal person, but he has gills that open when he's under water. And scales on some parts of his arms, legs, and neck.

It would make more sense for you to base your char on that he's a human with gills and webbing on his hands from what I remember.
