Kalpana grew up in an upper middle class family that was destroyed by a nasty divorce when she was twelve. Her father was a successful lawyer and lost a considerable amount of money and property during the separation that allowed Kalpana and her mother to live a comfortable life. She was permitted to visit her father on weekends but he rarely ever made the effort to do so and eventually their relationship became strained. Confused, shocked, and under the belief that she played a role in the demise of her parent's relationship, she struggled to keep her grades up in school. Her mother eventually uprooted their life when she was fourteen and relocated to a small town where they could start over - which is exactly what Kalpana did. She excels in her classes but only participates in extracurricular activities for the sake of her resume, believing her time can be spend much better doing something else.​
