TL;DR rambling to Mimi

mars
captain of the dragon's ghost

There was nothing but the vast, open ocean around the Dragonโ€™s Ghost, the ship was headed to nowhere in particular, so it was a matter of seeing where they ended up. The crew had just wrapped up another adventure and Mars was pleased with having finished yet another exciting adventure. The captain had a restful night, and now it was time to get up for breakfast and tea. And as per usual every single day, Mars was eager to tell ghost stories over breakfast. Sure, he could save the ghost stories for dinnertime where evening has already fallen and the sun would be setting to set the spooky atmosphere, but Mars loves ghost stories! And yes, he does share ghost stories at dinnertime as well. The captain was beaming with excitement as he slipped his binder on and got ready for the day, nitpicking at his messy hair and at the sleeves of his dress. Once Mars was satisfied, he turned to look at Minnow who was still laying down on the bed.

โ€œCome on Minnow, letโ€™s get to the kitchen and we can get you some fish!โ€ Mars spoke as he reached to pick the cat up and left his cabin. Minnow let out a meow at the mention of fish. Mars exited his cabin and he began to weave his way to the upper deck. The captain walked over to the doors and zie opened them up, being greeted with the familiar sight of the Dining Hall. Mars walked over to the table and set Minnow down, giving her a pat on the head. โ€œYouโ€™ll get your fish soon.โ€ Zie told her before zie began to make zir way to the kitchen which was connected to the dining hall. Mars opened the door, expecting to see Mimi already in the kitchen making something to eat. And making some tea.

There she is! โ€œMimi!โ€ Mars called out to her cheerfully with a grin, making zir way over to the cook. โ€œWhatโ€™s fer breakfast this here morning?โ€ He inquired before continuing, โ€œye got some fish fer Minnow?โ€ Mars questioned her. Here we go, heโ€™s starting to ramble. โ€œAnโ€™ as always, I want chamomile tea.โ€ His favorite tea! Mars began to lean against the wooden table that was used mainly for chopping vegetables and whatever else Mimi was using for whatever she was making. โ€œ'ope ye don't mind me ramblin' to ye while ye cook though.โ€ Mars was quick to say. The captain had a habit of rambling a lot when talking, sometimes he would talk fast and his words would be squished together.

The captain was eager to sit down at the table in the Dining Hall and start telling some ghost stories to the crew. Zie already has a few spooky stories in mind already.

Mimi
... weโ€™re having apple cinnamon brioche this morning with some fresh cream and sausages.
Mimi had woken with the sun and had already been in the kitchen for a while. She was posted at the prep table, humming a French nursery rhyme while fixing breakfast and waiting for the kettle to boil.

Pomme de reinette et pomme d'api
Petit tapis rouge
Pomme de reinette et pomme d'api
Petit tapis grisโ€ฆ

This morning, Mimi was kneading dough for a brioche. A bowl of carefully minced apples, cinnamon, and sugar was waiting nearby and the juicy sausages were ready to be fried. The sun shining through the porthole illuminated the blond and grey strands of hair escaping from the cookโ€™s floral headscarf.

Mimi had just put the pastry in the iron stove when she heard muffled footsteps coming from the dining hall. A few seconds later, the door cracked on its hinges and Captain Mars shuffled in, hair wild, cheeks rosy and a bright grin on their face. โ€œMimi! Whatโ€™s fer breakfast this here morning?โ€, they boomed. Mimi repressed a grin as she reached for the kettle, that had started whistling to indicate the water was ready. โ€œYe got some fish fer Minnow?โ€, Mars continued without giving the cook time to answer. โ€œAnโ€™ as always, I want chamomile tea.โ€, the captain added unnecessarily. Mimi knew it was their favourite.

While Mars kept rambling on, she poured them both a cup of chamomile tea before handing one to the young captain, along with a choice morsel of swordfish she had put aside for Minnow. Mimi always paid special attention to Minnow, as their feline companion was The Dragonโ€™s Ghostโ€™s self-appointed rodent exterminator, and an effective one. The cook detested those pests that spoiled whatever food and water they inevitably managed to claw their way to and carried a myriad of deadly diseases. Besides, Mimi was no fool โ€“ she knew full well that cats needed to be well-fed and happy so as not to summon devastating storms with the magic they stored in their tailsโ€ฆ

โ€œ'ope ye don't mind me ramblin' to ye while ye cook though.โ€, added Mars to the end of their tirade.

โ€œOf course not, mon trรฉsor. You know I love your ramblingsโ€, Mimi was finally able to interject. โ€œAnd weโ€™re having apple cinnamon brioche this morning with some fresh cream and sausages. The shipโ€™s stores are full to bursting from our last haul โ€“ we will be eating like royalty for a while! Speaking ofโ€ฆ โ€œ, Mimi added with an enigmatic grin. The cook fished into a wooden bushel nestled in the corner of the kitchen and turned to face the captain with a tangerine in hand. She tossed the ripe citrus fruit across the table, a wide smile revealing two deep dimples in her round cheeks. It was a rare treat for the crew.

โ€œLet me fry up these sausages and we can go wait for the others in the dinning hallโ€, Mimi announced, grabbing a hold of a large cast iron pan. Within a few minutes, the mouth-watering aromas were filling the kitchen and the dining hall, escaping to the rest of the ship...

percy khatri.
the cartographer of the Dragon's Ghost.
There was nothing quite like the lull of the waves during the early morning hours. Often times, the seas would hold some sort of tension -- a unsteady sway that amplified with the winds. However, on mornings such as this, the ocean was a calm companion. The waves were gentle, rocking the boat in a steady sway that kept sleep clinging to those along her surface. If it hadn't been for the steady routine Persephone had followed with her years amongst the navy, she might have found herself dozing for far past when the sun had began to rise along the horizon.

Luckily, Percy had spent most of her adolescence amongst men who rose before the dawn.

Brief flickers of sunlight had begun to streak through the portholes as she finished buckling her belt around her waist. Her short sword lay tucked between the fabric of her vest and her coat, a concealed form of steel that she always kept on her person. Although she was more adept with a pistol, she was still new amongst the crew. It had yet to be a year before she had joined their ranks -- and the still distrusting glances were common enough to keep any valuables and personals concealed. A gun was not an option when some might find reason to kill her without question if seen with it.

She adjusted the buckles on her boots to wrap securely over her calves before she was bending down to withdraw the multitude of maps she kept near her bunk. She glanced over each sheet with sharp eyes, following the coordinates until she registered the most recent map she had studied. With deft fingers, she plucked it from the bag and made her way towards the stairs that led above deck. The bunks were closer to the back of the ship; so, she had to follow the hallway on the top floor that passed the kitchens. She could hear noises coming from inside, aware that Mimi was most likely preparing breakfast for the entire crew.

She wavered outside the door, not wanting to bother the older woman. Her steps faltered even more when she registered the captain's voice. Ze seemed rather excited that morning and although she meant to display herself as trustworthy, she still struggled to find her place amongst the crew. So, she slipped past the entrance to make her way above deck. The crisp flutter of the wind had her cheeks flaring with heat. Her lashes fluttered as she took a deep breath, basking in the sea air.

Her steps brought her to the crow's nest before her fingers were weaving into the rope. She pulled herself up, hand over hand before she finally found herself able to sit at the top. She wavered as she registered a figure and then a face and remembered a name.

"Good morning," Percy spoke softly, her accent lilted and soft.

She wavered at the top before she glanced down, contemplating her next action for a long moment.

"I didn't mean to intrude." She admitted as her fingers curled tighter over the ropes where she still was half-hanging over the edge. "I can always find another place to sit if you'd prefer your solitude this morning."

i will not be another flower, picked for my beauty and left to die. i will be wild, difficult to find, and impossible to forget
Eirian would have laid in bed for a few moments, knowing the sun was up, and in some way, she should be as well. While she wasn't the last one up, Eirian didn't enjoy waking up in the mornings, but over the years, has gotten better at it. Not that it was emotionally any better. With a soft groan, she would sit up in her bed, stretching her arms taking in a deep breath, and holding it for a moment, before exhaling. Now sitting up, she looked around her room and swing her legs over the side of her bed, and opened her chest to pull out the outfit for the day. A simple white dress with some lace-like details around the collar and just off the shoulder, paired with a deep blue overskirt, layered on top. Then an array of belts were put on top, as well as a few chains, some as a belt some as a necklace, and a pearl necklace on top, just because she could. Eirian liked pretty things and find that wearing a little made her feel, nice. Then, she hitched up part of the skirt, and then the last step, was some thick stockings she got two black books with a slight heel, making the 5'3" girl stand at a grand 5'4". She was a strong believer in the 'look good feel good' motto and took care in how she presented. Looking into a small mirror, she fixed upper her red curls before setting the mirror down and would walk out of her room, heading down to the kitchen.

It had been some years since she joined the crew. While at first, it was out of desperation as her name held no meaning or power anymore, but now, she enjoyed the fresh salty air of the sea every morning, the calming rocking of the boat that lulled her to sleep, the adventures the crew went on, with the items that could be obtained. If you asked her in the past if she ever thought about living on a ship, you would have gotten a look of disgust and a hard no from her, as she wore the finest fabrics, trying to stand out among the ladies, all hoping to catch the eye of some handsome man who would marry her and bring her family up in the social ladder. However, if it was evident, that didn't happen for Eirian. However, she decided to take the path of claiming her own fine things, no matter the cost, to live a full life despite what the others at home would say. While life wasn't always comfortable, she had come far despite her first attempt to live a happy life failing, to say the least.

She would make her way through the ship, finding herself at the door of the kitchen/dining hall and entering the kitchen, looking at the three present. Mars who looked excited as always, Minnow, the precious kitten of the crew, and Mimi, creating beautiful smells that made Eirian salivate, in the back of his mind, an unwanted voice telling her it was โ€˜unlady likeโ€™. Shaking the thought off, despite her sleepy eyes, she could tell that the two now were in a pleasant mood and felt a need to match their shared energy. A smile formed on her face as she would walk over not to the Captain or stove but towards Minnow.

โ€œGood morning captain! Good morning Mimi! Such a lovely morning! Might I say, Mimi, the food smells divine as per usual!โ€ She said in a bright cheerful voice, she learned โ€˜formalโ€™ talk coming through a bit as she hasnโ€™t yet adapted her speech to fit the two present in the room. But it quickly changed as she sat down the right neck to Minnow, her whole face softening more as she went to go pet the resident pet of the crew, probably her favorite member.

โ€œAnd good morning to you as well Minnow! Didnโ€™t forget about you, precious baby.โ€ She cooed at the cat, slouching in her chair slightly to be more at eye level with the calico cat, gently petting her from head to tail in a very calming and rhythmic motion. If anything, when she smiles at the cat, it might be closer to her real smile than anything else. After all, she might find herself talking to the cat if the two of them are somehow left alone, more open to Minnow than any human. After petting the cat for a few moments, she would sit back up and look towards Mars.

Sleep is not a good substitute for food when you are hungry.

The night sky, dusted with the stars, gave way to the blooming dawn and the waves curled against the bottom of the Dragonโ€™s Ghost, making the thing creak. It was a pleasant sight to witness, though if you were anywhere near XingYun Jianโ€™s, also known as Sharpโ€™s, cabin that peaceful serenity would have been disrupted by the hefty snoring that could rival an ocean storm.

Sharpโ€™s body swayed in his hammock as the ship itself rocked to and fro, a little bit of drool spilling over onto his pillow. He only awakens to the sunlight from the morning sun peeking into his room via a porthole. His eyes wearily open, yet once they open completely, Sharp hops out of his bed and onto his bare feet, still in his worn pants from days before, as though he was never asleep in the first place.

He thinks back to the dream that he had. It was a nonsense dream with a creature talking to him in a strange language. He didnโ€™t remember what it said, but he remembered what he felt: a strong feeling of hollowness and a chill. Sharp decides to forget about it, like with all his other dreams.

Sharp raises his muscular arms above his head in a stretch that brings out the sounds of cracking from his spine before twisting his head around to make even more cracks. Once done, he wipes his jaw with the back of his hand and leaves the comfort of his small room. Immediately his nose is treated to the scent of breakfast, and without thought he follows it to the kitchen. He pays very little mind to anything until he arrives. Sharp tilts his head at the amount of people gathered, says nothing, and walks over to where Mimi was cooking.

For a moment, he simply stands there with all of his attention focused on the stove, his nose wiggling to the scent of the sausages. Then, after he glances towards everyone else, he snatches one of them and swiftly puts it in his mouth. In an instant, Sharp hisses with his mouth open while also trying to chew the hot sausage, trying to ignore the burning sensation. He manages to get it down, though, before Mimi can scold him.

The Carpenter

The chair underneath Fernando dug comfortably into his side as he leaned against the wood, gently rocked by the lilt of the ship as he awaited the morningโ€™s breakfast. He sat cross-legged, his wool pants providing sufficient relief against the cool air that lurked throughout the cabins and his leather boot shook with restless energy. In his callused hand he clutched a crude figure of a goat, and he used his other to sweep a silver knife over the driftwood, taking care to keep the animal clean of shavings with a occasional brush of his thumb. He had found the branch in their earlier adventure, sea spray had cleansed and softened the wood, which created an ample surface for his blade to dig intricately into the branch.

The small figures werenโ€™t uncommon for Fernando to make, quite the contrary, he had an array of little animals that often resided on his dresser. He occasionally threw a couple monkeys into bonfires or dropped a couple of hippos back into the sea, but other than that there really was no further use for the little wooden things. But they easily provided Fernando with a way to pass the time and so he carved them fervently.

He had awoken before the sun had the chance to kiss the sky with orange hues, and he knew there was no obligation for such an early rousing (unless you counted the task of listening to The Captainโ€™s repetitive tales). But the habit was one he had yet to shake since his time on The Dragonโ€™s Ghost, and as such he often felt compelled to take on his duties an hour or two before breakfast was even set to begin.

The smell of cinnamon and sausage drifted from the kitchen and caused Fernando to pause in his carving of the goatโ€™s ear. Mimi was a gift, truly an angel sent from the heavens. What business she had with a bunch of mangy pirates he had no idea, but he would be forever thankful that her food had brought life to a tolerable level and would always welcome the generosity of the cook.

as distance tests a horse's strength, time reveals a person's character
Gulls were less a bird and more a rat with wings; annoying yet intelligent. They would do anything for a scrap of food, patiently waiting for just the right moment to strike and snatch the morsel up. Shengzhe did not like the sound of gulls for it signaled that he once again had gone another night without sleep. Sunlight streamed into the window he had facing out the tail end of the boat. It bathed the room in warm lighting, glistening off the many silk fabrics adorning the walls and ceiling. Vibrant crimsons layered between brilliant emerald and soft pastel blues, all the colors coming together in an exotic ambience of elegance and grace. Pale hands delicately held a clay tea cup, steam floating gently upwards into Shengzhe's olfactory senses. The soft lingering scent of tea leaves helped soothe his agitated mind and lift his spirits up. He disliked the night just as much as he disliked the gulls.

Memories he tries to squash down to the darkest depths of his brain always managed to wiggle to the forefront, waiting until he is asleep and vulnerable. It was his third night without a deep slumber; the few cat naps he had taken throughout the three days only amounted to three or four hours in total. He took another long sip of the green tea, setting the empty cup on his small ornate table and gathering himself up. Sitting on the floor was more natural to him, using an assortment of embroidered pillows and fabrics he had collected over the past seven years. Shengzhe drew the baby blue outer layer of his hanfu tighter around his slim frame and weaved around his mildly cluttered room. He would have to clean soon. Opening the door, his right hand came up over his eyes to hide from the bright glare of sunshine. Many of the other crew members were early risers and while he may have been awake, he preferred his own privacy for a few hours before breakfast.

The wind picked up just enough to pull his long ebony tresses billowing around his face, using his free hand to pull the back behind his shoulders and letting them hang freely by his hips. Shengzhe blinked a little longer to adjust to the light then made his way to the dining hall, just catching sight of the back of Sharp going inside. The doctor waited a few moments to gather his thoughts, gentling his facial features into something amicable and passive; a habit he still could not break out of. If he kept a passive demeanor, it meant less notice. He pulled open the door as quietly as he could and padded inside, his movements all frail grace and no motion unwasted. The table was already growing quite full and the idea of sitting next to Eiridan was frightening. Sitting next to the captain was also out of the question, seeing that Callisto had yet to arrive and that was his unspoken seat. Instead, Shengzhe chose to trod near Mimi, the jovial cook, and Sharp, the childish sharpshooter, were both safe people to be around. "Is their anything I can assist you with, Ma'am?" His voice had an airy quality to it, almost melodious with a slight accent as well.

The Lookout of the Dragon's Ghost.
Lucy had always been an early riser, even before she became a member of the Dragon's Ghost. Often times she would be up before the sun practicing her sword-play or helping her father get the forages ready for the day. Even after she traded her life on land for a life at sea, the habit was hard to break.

So an hour or so before the sunrise, Lucy was already up and dressed, doing some light stretches in her cabin to wake her muscles up for the day. She practiced some simple sword stances before sheathing her weapon on her belt and heading out her door.

She was quiet as she made her way down the long hallway and up on deck, not wanting to wake up any of her crewmates before they were ready. Once outside she inhaled the salty sea air before padding her way over to the mast and hooked her fingers into the rope ladder leading up.

She climbed upwards effortlessly, hoisting herself inside of the crows nest. She leaned her elbows on the rim, sharp blue gaze darting across the horizon. One of the perks of being an early riser is that she could keep an eye out for any danger while the rest of the crew slept; it put her mind at ease that she could be awake to keep a lookout while they slumbered below.

Golden rays began to peek above the horizon, spilling beams of warmth across the wooden desk. Lucy closed her eyes, briefly basking in the sun as it rose. The others would most likely be stirring now if they hadn't been already; which means that Mimi would most likely be in the kitchen working on breakfast. Her stomach grumbled at the thought and she softly patted it in anticipation of the delicious breakfast to come.

Sounds below that weren't the normal creaking of the ship had her tilting her head, blonde locks trailing across her cheeks. Was someone up and about down there? Before she could take a peek, a dark head of hair was appearing over the top of the crows nest. It took her a moment to recognize her unexpected visitor but after a couple of seconds she realized it was Percy. An easy smile spread across her lips at the sight of the woman. "Good morning." She greeted, "By all means, I won't say no to some company." She replied, extending a hand out in case Percy wanted some assistance climbing inside.

Mimi
...And remember to chew your food, Sharp!
Mimi looked around contentedly as she cradled the teacup in her worn hands, enjoying the fragrant aromas. The group had migrated from the kitchen to the dining hall. Captain Mars had taken up their customary spot at the head of the table, the best vantage point for a practiced storyteller.

To Mimiโ€™s left was seated Sharp, whom she had just scolded for scarfing down a sausage whole. Try though she may, the young man loathed cutlery and table manners. But he had a good heart, and cared deeply for the crew. To her right, Shengzhe was sipping his tea. His soft and refined demeaner often clashed with Sharp's. Every one of the surgeonโ€™s movements was infused with an ethereal grace, though his eyes often darkened with a sadness Mimi had yet to understand.

Across the table from her, Fernando was skulking over his morning rum and Eiri was sweet talking Minnow. The morning light filtering through the porthole illuminated her mane of red and blond curls like a halo. They were her family, Mimi thought, and she would have done anything to keep them from harm.

"What stories shall you share today?", Eiri questioned Mars, finally looking up from the cat.

Mimi eyed her companions expectantly. She was secretly hoping for a scary story โ€“ Captain Marsโ€™ tales of ghost ships and vengeful spirits always captivated her. But they were still missing a few party members.

"I would also like to know! But Eiri, ma chรฉrie, would you mind terribly calling on the others for breakfast, before it gets cold?", she asked the young spy. "Lucyโ€™s usually in the Crowโ€™s nest about this time and I would hate for her to miss another of our Captainโ€™s tales! You know how she gets distracted."

Mimi always has special attentions for Lucy. The young woman shared a striking resemblance to her late daughter, Coralie. She had been a beautiful baby, with big blue eyes, a light duvet of blond hair, and an easy smile that Mimi missed every day. Before nostalgia took hold of her, Mimi stood from the dining table, grabbing the empty tea pot.

"I will go prepare a fresh pot of tea in the meantime", she announced, heading towards the kitchen. "And remember to chew your food, Sharp!", she added over her shoulder, just as the door closed behind her.

Setting the water on the stove, Mimi enjoyed the muffled sounds of the crewโ€™s conversations, drifting into the kitchen. Once the water had boiled, Mimi prepared a small pot of strong black coffee and another big pot of chamomile tea.

Eager to hear another one of Captain Marsโ€™ stories, she set the coffee and tea pots, some cream, and a small bowl of sugar on a wooden platter and headed back to the dining room.

It was sometimes a strange life and they formed a strange crewโ€ฆ but Mimi would not have changed it for the world.

As more and more people came in to crowd the kitchen, Eiri would become quieter and quieter, mostly looking at the cat. It was hard o fit in with so many unique personalities so often times tends to sit back and listen to the more people that were around. Her eyes dashed around at those who had eventually entered the room before landing on Mimi as she spoke to Eiri.

"I would also like to know! But Eiri, ma chรฉrie, would you mind terribly calling on the others for breakfast, before it gets cold?"

With a smile, Eiri would stand up, gently dusting and fixing her outfit as she did so, and nodded towards the cook.

"Of course madame Mimi. It would be my pleasure!" She replied, mimicking a similar accent to Mimi, knowing she was doing it but also knowing there was nothing she could do about it. Eiri would quickly turn and hurry out, her curls bouncing behind her. It was nice to have a moment alone to herself, it gives Eiri time to breathe before going back and trying to be this ideal person for everyone. There was no need for it but, it was just a habit at this point.

Eiri would make her way up to the deck, playing with her necklace and looking up at the sky with a small smile, squitting a bit as she tried to peer into the crow's nest.

"Is that two of them up there? Lucy and...Percy? Never mind that." She mumbled to herself, taking a deep breath and cupped her hands around her mouth before shouting up to the crow's nest. "Hey, Lucy! Is that Percy up there with you? Either way, Mimi has breakfast ready!" She would wait a few moments to see if there was any movement, and when she would see some, Eiri knew she could go. "I'm going to make sure everyone else is up! Come down and grab food before it gets cold!"

Eiri would turn on her heels and enter the ship again, going in her head all the people she saw. There was, of course, Mimi and Mars, and Sharpp had some having eating something at least, Shengzhe was there as well and Fernando who was anotther early bird of the crew. She has yet to Callisto this morning as well. Withh her ttime on the ship, she knew Fernando must be awake by now butt Callisto might as wekk be asleep. Eiri secrettly wishhed to be asleep as well but on the sea, sometimes sleep was one's own enemy. Her boots tapped softly against thhe wooden floors as she walked along tthe hallway, and stopped when she reached the door to the first mate's quarters.

"Get some breakfast before it gets cold! Mimi sent me!" With another very loud knock,, Eiri banged her fist against the door of his room on the ship, hoping it would wake the other up. "Callisto! Wake upp! Mimi has made some lovely food, come out before it gets cold!"

With that, it should be the last of them, hopefully everyone would be in the kitchhen area soon but she waited outside the door of the first mate, waiting to hear any type of noise from inside the room.
