Chitchat For history nerds like meh

I'm definitely mostly into modern history myself, which seems very neglected in terms of RP. Pretty much the only 20th century events I typically see RP's centered around are 1920's America and WW II. A lot of people seem to overlook the absolute gold mine of plots that can be played in the 20th century. There was plenty of tension, political intrigue, cultural upheaval, etc. It's very under-rated as far as RP goes. I personally just finished a 1x1 RP set in revolutionary Russia and it was easily one of my most memorable.

Well, I hated studying history. I was the smart aleck who, on the first day of class in my senior year of high school, responded to the teacher's question: "Why do we study History?"

I mumbled, "What's happened happened; not much we can do about it now."

Let me tell ya, them grey haired teachers have bat like hearing. She ask who has said that. So I repeated myself, this time loud and clear. The class had been almost asleep until I did that. Fun fact: there is always at least one or two history nerds in a class of the size we had. I sparked a nice little debate.

At the end of the year I spoke with the teacher. I was her top student. She admitted that she had thought I was going to be trouble. But she soon realized I was just getting people involved. I told her she was welcome.

I suppose my favorite historical subjects would be: Cold War, Hittites / Turkish military coups, Manhattan Project. Every now and then I delve into biblical history. I even did a little research into Dacian/Thracian linguistics. (I am a former linguist.) At the time I was doing research on Ardael (Transylvania).

lol I was that history geek. I would have been livid if you were in my class and said that.

Well, I got the usual response about learning from mistakes. So I responded with a series of repetitive instances of history that indicated that we hadn't learned a thing. Yes, I knew there was a fallacy on my part that was proving their point. But hey, the class woke up. Much more fun than droning about a syllabus that we could always read later.

Part of my interest in the Cold War is the fact that I lived through it. I was military intel during the last decade. I remember what it was like in Berlin before the Wall came down. I remember the early days of the Star Wars program. (My stepfather worked at Sandia Labs. As soon as I had my TS SCI clearance, I got a personal tour.)

Cold War is my favourite, yet I was nine months old when the USSR collapsed. I suppose I take such a deep interest in it due to my socialist roots. I have been a socialist most of my life and much of my family is as well. Whether one agrees with Soviet style socialism/communism or not, it was influential and it still plays a role in how most people perceive the ideology today. Plus it's just overall an interesting period full of political intrigue, cultural upheaval, and other elements I love to incorporate into my RP's.

Hilariously I did a project on the existence of 'cake' throughout history when I was younger. Now... I'm just fascinated by food in general and its history. Ice cream being from the east... Pancakes originating in Scandinavia...

Its all so much fun to research! ...Also, I may or may not be hungry.
