Fantasy Dragons in the West

Fool! Still, I will not lose this chance.

Amal smiled as he ran to the wheel and began to vigorously shake and shout at the helmsman. "Wake up! The Princes of the Earth have need of you!"

A quick search of the ship reveals that Xandra is indeed alive and in good shape, she is in the hold with the Warstrider, trying to get the large mecha opened up and ready for battle. She is nearly in tears as she struggles to strap herself into it. Looking up in shock at the sight of her fellow Dragon Blooded coming in, she lets out a deep breath. "Don't scare me like that! I thought . . . that you were the dead, coming for me. I'm not good in a fight. All I could think of was this Warstrider down here, and if I got it working, I might be able to help."

Up on deck, Amal starts to get a sign of life from the sleeping crewman. Whatever magic was at work seems to be wearing off.

Once he is lucid enough to understand Amal began to talk swiftly.

"Bring the ship about. Bring engines to full and align us abeam of the enemy ship. Their rudder is gone, and this hull is imperishable: we are going to ram them. Let us see how well the anathema swims!"

"Don't be absurd, the ship is the work of dark magic. You think it cares how hard we hit it? We need to get back on course rapidly and make for the island. The sooner we are safe from drowning, the better off we are," Mithras said as he picks up the skull of a fall undead and tosses over the railing with disgust.

"This is no warship, save your bloodlust for when they come back. We will not drag our foe's intended target closer to him. The Captain has his task well in hand here."

"It isn't bloodlust, but pragmatism. This is a two hundred thousand pound jade-steel goremaul and an anathema who can't get out of the way or take the hit. Even a glancing hit will break them like a clod of earth throne against a stone wall. Our first age hull can take this hit without damage, and if we debate we will lose our chance.

As for the ship, I can personally attest that ship can break."

"Have you considered he might want us to risk getting closer? That this is a trap?" Mithras said with a roll of his eyes now.

"They already tried to ambush us once. The dead do not fear. He will sacrifice them to hinder us. But I digress, its not your decision nor mine. Captain, what say you?" He looks over to the ships's master.

Karasu

When I get to the captain I am going to request to talk to him alone. (When I do, continue with the discussion as follows) "Captain, I do not know what your plans is, but it best be for the safety of your cargo, particularly the princess and the warstrider. You do not have authority to risk either in any fool hardy pursuit after that apparent Anathema. We are better equipped to deal with him on land. How far are we from our destination and is there anywhere we can pull in, a safe port that is close?

Whatever he answers my come back, "Most of the entourage of both ships are better equipped to deal with things with something solid underfoot. We are not all sailors. I will stump out after talking with the captain rather he agrees with me or not.

If he agrees: "Thank you for your wise wisdom and foresight. Mnemon will know of your keen insight and ability to keep everything into perspective."

If he doesn't agree: "Your choice may come back to haunt you in the future, I do hope things turn out in your favor." Either way I will do a respectful bow and leave.

After speaking with Karasu, Roogan looks at the various Exalts. "My first duty is to get Nellens Xandra to Wavecrest, and that is what I plan on doing. We will sail with all due speed to our destination, and you will have to deal with the fact that the honor guard escorts on the other ship will be along later." He turns to his second in command. "Signal them our intent to make haste." He then pulls out from inside his shirt a hearthstone on a jade amulet. Detaching the stone from the necklace, he inserts it into a well concealed socket next to the helm. "This will help power our engines, and with our sails getting good wind, we should be in Wavecrest by tomorrow evening. I have a Sorcery Capturing Cord with some messenger spells that I will use to send word ahead, so our sudden arrival doesn't take anyone by surprise. If you will excuse me, I have work to see to." He turns on his heel and heads to his cabin.

Now untangled from the Warstrider, Xandra stands off to one side, arms wrapped around herself. "That Anathama was after me. All of you put yourselves at risk to protect me. I don't know what to say, other than the obvious of thank you." She looks around at the mess being cleaned up on the deck with distaste. "I had no idea that Skullstone has such strong feelings about this treaty."

Mithras had wandered out to check on the Princess, having donned his red coat about his shoulders. It was sealed with a clasp and flowing in the wind more like a cloak thanks to its empty sleeves. He looks at her thoughtfully, glad to see she was only shaken by the attempt on her life. It all seemed far too brazen but then again Skullstone had little to fear from Realm reprisals... yet. This alliance with Wavecrest would help put the fear of the Scarlet Dynasty into their rulers.

"This was only an initial play, my lady. I don't not mean to alarm you but other attempts will be tried once we reach Wavecrest. Rest assured you have such faithful companions on this journey at least."

Karasu

"It is an honor to be on this journey with you Xandra do not concern yourself over us, as we are all kin and not one of us would allow another to be taken by such demons."

Amal walked away from the salon-party twittering about the useless pretty who so wasted the Dragon's grace as to run from battle weeping.

"What has befallen this, our scarlet realm, of world-wide and storied fame?

Old women scheme in rotting halls while soldiers fear their undrawn arms.

Where has boldness gone: to dare without fear of loss, to win empire or shame?

Yet here I am come in the midst of foes, unquestioned against further harms."

Dragon's but I am a terrible poet.

Nellens Zanaiya

She casts a cold glance at the back of the Exalt who had appeared from nowhere and now, apparently, wanted to ram the ship with herself and her sister aboard it into the vessel of the creature that wanted to kill her. Carefully, with great studiousness, she wipes the slime off of her breastplate before moving to hug Xandra tightly and checks her over herself.

"The important thing is that you are unharmed. You and I are going to brush up on your martial skills, especially for self-defense," She turns to the other Exalts and bows deeply to each of them. "I would like to add my thanks to my sister's on both my behalf and as the representative of my family. It is truly an honor to have you all here."

Looking at the sisters together, I smile and respectfully nod my head, "The honor is my own."

Xandra seems to be calming down quickly, now that the immediate threat to life and limb has passed. She takes a few moments to compose herself, then goes about the ship helping the Captain in rousing his sleeping crew. Tomiko would say that the blessings of the Dragons were upon the ship, since no one was hurt more than a few bumps and bruises suffered by the crew passing out and falling to the deck. In fact, she does say that, and goes on to add, "Dear Xandra, it is good to see you willing to go into the fray with the enemies of Creation, but right now, your life is much more important than the possibility of destroying an Anathama. Without you, this treaty that your House has labored so long for will be in jeopardy. Do not feel that you are imposing upon us if you call for our aid; that is why we are here. Please, let us do our duty to you and the Blessed Isle."

Xandra nods, not looking too happy at the thought, but being wise enough not to argue with one who is so clearly correct.

Time marches on. It is mid afternoon on the next day when you once again come across other ships on the ocean. There is a small group of two vessels flying the flag of Wavecrest, but instead of slow merchants, these are fast warships. Signal flags are run up the mast of the lead warship, indicating that they wish to come along side the Pearl. As the ships slowly close in on each other, a woman on the Wavecrest ship calls across the intervening gulf, "Ahoy Ocean Pearl! I am Marta Landers, Captain of the Drommond. Your message was received, and we have been dispatched to escort you into port to ensure you arrive without any more difficulties. Do you require any assistance?"

Roogan bellows back, "I thank you for the escort, Captain. We suffered no ill effects from our encounter with the Anathama, and are doing just fine. Set your course and we will follow you in."

Karasu

I am feeling better but am waiting to reunite with the touch of the earth itself. Hopefully we can trust these guys, at this point everyone is beginning to become suspect.

Ledaal Mithras

"You are most welcome. Ledaal Mithras as your service." He smiles with a bit of a bow before moving on to help restore some order to the ship.

Mithras looked on at the roused crew before looking on at the ship and the targeted Princess. The attack had been... sloppy. That was what was bothering him now as he considered the situation more and more now as he looks around at the crew. Too easy. Skullstone had to have known the girl would have a Terrestrial escort. His knowledge of that island nation was that its leadership was far from incompetent, thus this attack they had faced left him feeling nervous now. Some of his fellows Princes were too foolhardy for his liking, failing to grasp the danger they'd put others in.

As he watches the Wavecrest ships, he looks on at them appraisingly while still worried about the situation on board. Hoping the Princess hadn't been targeted by something more subtle. He wondered if one of his traveling companion was knowledgeable enough on magic for that issue. He'd have to apply some tests for spirits as well from his own occult knowledge.

With her escorts, the Ocean Pearl sails along to her destination. The islands of Wavecrest start to become visible, and soon you are able to see some details of the shoreline and the city of Seahaven on the isle of Abalone. The two escorts wave you on and break away and head back out to sea, probably looking for signs of the bone-ship that attacked you before.

As you come up to the docks, there is a small crowd of people craning their necks to see the newcomers. Obviously, word of your arrival has leaked out. People are waving and cheering, very excited at the thought of seeing their new princess. There are also several carriages bearing the flag of the Realm on them, probably from the Embassy to give you a ride. Guards are on the docks, keeping order and making sure that there is room for the workers to get their jobs done.

Once the gangplank goes out, Xandra is halfway pushed to the front by Tomiko. The young Dragon Blooded smiles and waves at the people, garnering a loud outcry of positive energy. With Tomiko and Zanaiya close at hand, Xandra starts down to the dock. A little girl, perhaps five or six, comes running up to Xandra with a bundle of flowers in her hand. Reaching up, the child offers the flowers to Xandra, and the crowd quiets a bit as she asks, "Are you really going to be our new princess?"

Xandra kneels down to be eye level with the little one, takes the flowers, and gives her a gentle hug. "If the Dragons find me worthy, I will, little one. What's your name?"

"Becka!"

"Well, Becka, thank you for the flowers."

"Yer welcome! Gosh, you're pretty!"

"Hahaha. Thank you, Becka. I would love to talk more, but I have to go now. Here, take this flower for me, and remember this day."

"Yes, ma'am!"

The little one gives Xandra a hug, then turns to go back to the crowd, and Tomiko leans over to whisper to Zanaiya, "She will do just fine here."

Wearing her black hooded robe-dress (see Avatar) matching thigh-high boots and "Justice" on my back. At the top of the ramp I hug Roogan, "Bye Captain, it has been nice to travel under your care, may we meet again." I walk down the plank as part of Xandra's entourage. My hood has been drawn up to my eyes. I am looking for possible antagonist hiding among the joyous crowd. When seeing the little girl come through the crowd and interacting with the bride I watch looking more for trouble and briefly think about why I could careless about the hug or this girl's interaction, in the pass such acts would have bought tears to my eyes. Instead now it is an uncomfortable reminder of my loss. Remembering to smile at the event and acting as best I can to seem touched by this action I continue my watchful gaze looking for trouble.

It was one of Amal's failings that he didn't see people. Oh he saw the flow of traffic, the dockworker's choreography, and a thousand other things that people did, but to him it was part of the mechanisms that was the city. Make a main street three feet narrower and a pleasant neighborhood became a haven of violence and resentment. Place the piers too far apart and a bustling port became a rotting ghost town. It was with such an outlook that he watched the crowd and the guards and all the myriad things that went on.

Dragons, but they need help. I could work on it my whole life and still have as much work as now.

"Not that it wouldn't be enjoyable, in its own way."

He waited to walk down the ramp until the actual wedding party had departed. He would hate to be accused of worming his way in even though he lacked an invitation. He was going to do that in other ways.

The wedding party makes its way down to where the carriages are waiting for you; a small contingent of guards stand tall and proud next to them. They offer up a salute to you and they open up the doors to the three carriages for the Exalts to get in. A tall, handsome man in Imperial livery steps forward to greet you. "I am Cathak Aang, the head of security for the Embassy. Wen sends her apologies for not being here in person, but your arrival was not expected until tomorrow, and she is currently in meetings with members of the local Guild. Let me see, am I correct in saying that this lovely woman is the star of our upcoming celebrations? It is a pleasure to meet you, madam." He takes Xandra's hand and gives her a gentle kiss on the back of the wrist before turning to assist her into the lead carriage.

The ride to the Embassy is uneventful even if it is a little slow. Crowds have gathered to see the newly arrived Exalts, especially Xandra, and the streets are somewhat crowded. When you finally get to the Embassy, you can feel the distinctive Essence flow of a manse, and from the massive tree that dominates the grounds, you would guess that it is a Wood aspect manse. Servants descend upon you to take your bags.

Ledaal Mithras

Ledaal had watched the moment when the child came out of the crowd, quietly assessing the interaction. He smiled some as Xandra seemed to handle it well enough, at least the girl would hopefully win the hearts of the people of her new nation. He had joined the wedding party in the carriages, electing to ride in the last one as he looks out at the people more. This country had so much potential, its people eager to welcome their new princess though he worried about the other end of the equation in the Prince. Factors in all of this combined with that attack at see concerned him more greatly, for there were likely agents of Skullstone out in those crowds watching them. Even entering the embassy grounds did not put him at ease.

They don't realize the shadow war we've just stepped into... I envy their ignorance of what is to come...

He looks at his compatriots as he thought that, giving a sad smile as he climbs out to look around more. His own agents would be along with the luggage soon enough. He was prepared to start the long game of ferreting out the Realm's enemies here. Perhaps he might even take up residence, it would be a nice change from the Realm's growing tensions.

Karasu

Looks at Mithras curiously for a brief moment as he ponders, wondering what he could be thinking. Then she continues to take in the sights and people looking for danger as she does.

As everyone starts to look around at the imposing structure of the Embassy, Aang takes this time to offer up a warning. "There are various mystical wards about the building to keep out the unwanted. Do not go over the walls, even after you are introduced to the manse. Make sure that you always go through the gates and you will not be harmed. Let us not dwell upon that. Tell me, what happened on your trip here? Cathak Roogan sent a Infallible Messenger ahead to warn us of trouble, but he did not go into much detail on exactly what occurred."
