A high school student runs down empty halls that were full of life mere moments ago, fleeing from a horror straight out of a nightmare. They find themselves trapped, and in desperation reach deep into an unknown power...
A thief guides a crew remotely, their super-enhanced mind seeing every possibility before it happens, racing against the clock as the world disintegrates...
A field agent of the world's most powerful secret organization unleashes their power upon a foe capable of ripping a human to shreds in seconds. "Hold on, just a few seconds more. The Angels are here..."
A teacher at the local high school walks out of an exam in progress, barely concealing panic. The Enemy is here, and the students are in danger. Fortunately, this teacher has power, enough to punish ANYONE who would harm these children...
This is a Double Cross game, set in Fifth City, a fictional city in Japan. It will follow the exploits of four groups of Overeds (people with superhuman abilities granted by a virus) as they interact with different aspects of a greater whole. Players will control (and possibly share) multiple characters, one from each group, although only one will be active at a time. While each group of characters will have their own themes, overall the game explores Descent Into Madness, Standing Against the Darkness and Desperate Measures.
This game is chat-based, and will be hosted on Thursdays over teamspeak (likely 6-10pm central time, although this is somewhat flexible). I am aiming for 3 players, although 4 is also acceptable. Double Cross is a game of superpowered humans empowered by the Renegade Virus. The UGN is a superpowerful international secret organization that guides and manages Overeds. Most PCs will belong to this organization. They are opposed by the False Hearts, a loose collection of evil or self-serving Overeds and Gjaums. Gjaums are Overeds who have lost control of their power and either mutated into mindless monsters or psychopaths. Illegal Overeds are those who do not belong to either group.
The four groups are: Students at the local high school, a band of thieves, official agents of the UGN, and a collection of civilians adults. Each group will have one or two mandatory character types (which I'll call Stars), that must fit the listed requirements. Each player can fulfill no more than two Star roles. Star characters will be very important to the early stages of each group's story arc, and so will ignore the first time they would die or become a Gjaum.
Students: Students at the public high school, most of them are very recently come into their powers. While they lack the maturity of adult Overeds, their spirit and drive allow them to achieve what others may think impossible.
Themes - Learning the unknown, part-time heroes, overwhelmed
Stars - An "Ordinary High School Student" who will manifest Overed powers for the first time during the game. They should act as a way for the players to discover the world by being generally clueless about the setting and asking questions; A UGN Child, who despite being high school age has been working for the UGN for years. They should be willing to act as a source of exposition, and have a Lois link with the Ordinary High School Student. Love interest or Rival is recommended.
Thieves: A group of Illegal Overeds, using their powers for selfish (although not destructive) ends. They mostly work in stealing and fencing antiques, but also act as criminals for hire.
Themes - Edge of light and darkness, Complicated Past, Seeking Redemption
Stars - A former FH member, cynical and disapproving of both FH and UGN. Should have some traumatic event that caused them to leave FH, but still be untrusting of the UGN; A mastermind, with the Neumann syndrome. Should be willing to act as a strong leader for a group of selfish independent criminals and keep them working together and on-task.
UGN Agents: Field agents for the UGN. They are the best informed of the groups, and most likely to fight the FH directly. This group has the best equipment and training.
Themes - Professional, What Must Be Done, Conspiracy
Stars - A UGN officer who is extremely loyal to the director, having a Lois tie to her. Should be willing to keep the group loyal to the UGN through thick and thin, as well as furthering its goals. Romantic interest in the Director is acceptable, but must be one-sided.
Civilians: Responsible, mature adults who happen to be Overeds. While they work with the UGN, they mostly try to live normal lives. People in this group should have ordinary jobs, and are likely to have non-Overed families.
Themes - Family Life, Hidden Depths, How Far Will You Go
Stars - A teacher at the local high school. Must not have children, but may be married. Should be aware of the characters in the Student group, but willing to watch rather than intervene directly. Should act as the moral center of the civilian group, to prevent them going off the deep end too soon.
Fifth City is split across the Tone river into north and south halves. The North City is a university town, home to rival schools Pheonix University and Fifth City University. The South City is largely residential, but also has a small industrial sector on the southwestern edge. It houses the HQ of the Japanese branch of the UGN, after their City N and Tokyo bases were destroyed.
Locations
Fifth City High
The only public high school in the city, Fifth City High is famous for its successful sports program, producing some of the best athletes in the prefecture, and also for its rich donors that allow it access to the best equipment and supplies. It is located on the North side of the city, between the two universities. The UGN keeps a close eye on the school, as it has produced quite a few Overeds in recent years and is a prime recruiting ground.
Phoenix University
Typically considered the "easy" option for higher eduction, Phoenix University produces a steady stream of salarymen and other low-to-middle grade businesspeople. Of the two universities, they have the stronger sports program, and many a high school star has moved on to Phoenix University for one last chance at glory before accepting a mundane life. Underneath the university is the secret UGN prison Tartarus, where they keep illegals and Gjaum deemed necessary to detain - for either security or research purposes. Many of the school faculty are actually UGN researchers and security experts, to ensure that nothing disastrous happens.
Fifth City University
One of the top academic schools in the country, 5U has brutally strict entrance exams, but many of its graduates go on to lead corporations or groups. People move here from far away to attend, an half of its student body isn't from Fifth City. They have a longstanding rivalry with Pheonix University, who they see as dull muscle-heads incapable of anything important. Despite this rivalry, 5U is also run by the UGN, who are responsible for the successful graduates finding high positions - their new members need influence after all. The dean of admissions is an Overed working for UGN, and ensures that any Overed who applies passes the entrance exam no matter their actual score.
The Stations
Most people take the train across the river, as it is more than a mile across at this point. Several strip malls and shops are clustered around the north and south stations, and they are a popular shopping destination for locals and visitors alike. North Station Mall is also located nearby, and acts as a common hang out location for students from high school through college.
"Destiny" Stadium
While legally named after whichever super rich donor or company has bought it out most recently, locals all refer to it as Destiny Stadium. It is primarily used for baseball, and it is said that victory here guarantees success later in life.
Library
Located on the South side, the public library is a huge, ancient building. It is said to be the only place to survive all four previous calamities that have befallen the city. It has fallen on hard times lately, and only its status as a historic site is saving it from closing.
Naganaki Shrine
A famous local shinto shrine, it is managed by the respected Naganaki family. Acting as a community center, it hosts many celebrations and festivals throughout the year. The shrine's priest is much beloved, and their advice is greatly treasured.
Industrial District
The small industrial district is home to three factories that provide jobs to locals without university education. Lately, some wealthy outsiders have been asking around about possibly buying land nearby in order to open a fourth, much larger, factory
Fourth City Monument and Park
At the center of the South side, there is a large public park. In the center is a memorial to Fourth City, which was destroyed in an earthquake fifty years ago. It is a common play area for elementary and middle school students, as well as a place for those who were alive during the earthquake to sit and remember.
