The world is a Lie. Mortals are fuel for unspeakable engines and eldritch machinery that maintain the Demiurge, the God-Machine that orchestrates all things according to occult principles beyond human ken.
But you are not human. The legions of the Machine are limitless Angelic hosts, of which you were once an agent. A blend of flesh, spirit, and machine, burning souls in the furnace of your being.
But you Fell. Perhaps your devotion-engrams were failing, perhaps some part of you rejected the slavery of mankind, perhaps you dreamed of empire, or perhaps you dared to love. Your links were severed, your strength taken, and you were cast to earth to your eternal punishment.
The world is a Lie. It is a prison for mortal cattle. It is a prison for the Unchained. Beyond the perception of humankind, hidden in places-between-places, a delicate twist of space/time, a filter embedded in human DNA. It is the skin of Hell, the place of torment reserved for those who Fell from the Machine's Grace. Populated by Demons who embraced the system in a different way, and set about establishing petty fiefdoms in the shadow of the God-Machine. They number seven, these Mael'jinn jailors, their devotion is true and twisted, and their purpose simple: administer the human resources, and punish the Fallen.
To escape Hell, Unchained bond with human hosts at the moment of brain-death. The Unchained hide in mortal guise this way, while waging a covert war on the Machine by attacking it from Hell - they can cross the veil into the world's horrifying true reflection, and fight the hordes of Hell to hack, sabotage, and destroy the occult mechanism which underpin The God-Machine.
In the Lie, Unchained must be cautious, for if their host is found by Angels destruction is sure to follow.
In Hell, Unchained assume the full majesty of their Demonic Form and can perform superhuman feats with ease.
