Here's the thing: when one side includes Nazis and the KKK. there can be no equivalency.
Even though both sides threw tear gas and pepper spray, one side had people chanting "blood and soil" and "Jews will not replace us". One side beat a nonviolent young black musician until he needed hospital care. One side killed a peaceful activist with a car and said they were "glad" that she had died, and sent death threats to her grieving mother.
Trump's statements, which blamed "many sides", are an example of false equivalency. This is not an equal situation.
"What about the alt-left... don't they have any sense of guilt?" Trump said in his New York press conference. Why would anyone feel guilt and shame for standing up to murderous Nazis?

I don't care how many "fine people" showed up to defend the Confedarate statues. I understand the argument behind preserving the statues. But if they were "fine people", they would not have marched with Nazis.
