To Kallisto:

"I be smart!" says Aluc saying it over and over a few times before stopping the almost mantra like chant. "More than your tasty fingers. Children of Snakes."

Blackburn Manor:

"I'd be glad to have your company, lets start off with you're family to start shall we? I'm sure Bernard and the others will take care of the Constabulary part, and I'd rather not cause any needless friction by being there. Bernard and I seem to have a tenuous relationship at the moment, hopefully it can slowly improve with time," says James nodding his head towards the door. He picked up a box on the way out the door and made their way over the skybridge to where a lot of the guests were leaving. Many congratulations throughout the halls as James and Leone were forced to talk, converse, and say goodbyes to a number of people. Finally they find Elise and Marcel in a side room seemingly finishing up a conversation.

"Oh, hello James. It's good to see you and my daughter together, the announcement last night warmed my heart, and I must confess brought a few tears to my eyes," says Elise. Marcel shifts off to looking out the window into the clear day. "I suspect there will be a wedding soon? Would you consider holding it in Port-a-Lucine?"

James seemed unsure how to answer the question looks to Leone. "We've not quiet decided on that but if Leone would want that I'm sure it could be arranged..." said James venturing out a sentence but ultimately trying to read Leone's response.

"I was just thinking it would be a great way for Leone to see the rest of her family, they have missed you," says Elise innocently.

Arissa frowns at hearing the contents of the letter. I do not care about more of Blackburn s secrets or any ‘Wizard King’. If these men were not responsible for Maria’s murder... I have nothing. Her expression turns icy as she looks back to Thomas. “Well. Thank you for your linguistic expertise, Thomas, however commuting one crime hardly precludes one from committing another.” She pauses briefly, and her expression softens somewhat. “I know we did not see eye to eye on most things, but I know that you did what you feel that you had to to protect this town. I wish you well in your retirement.”

Arissa then turns back to Simon, her expression cold once again. “If you would not mind, I would like for us to speak with our mutual friend. With your permission, of course, landrechter.

Bernard nodded as Simon spoke of paying the acolytes, it didn't matter to him if they accumulated wealth, they hadn't taken an oath of poverty and the church did the best it could to provide for their needs but a little financial freedom could ease some of the tensions in the church and keep the acolytes bolstering the local economy.

Bernard wanted to ask about the break in at Boritsi, find out what was stolen, but Thomas brought up the letter and Arissa responded in kind. He understood her frustration with the lack of closure in the letter, and worried that it might encourage her to be a little reckless. Bernard placed a hand on Arissa's shoulder and addressed Thomas and Simon, "Thanks for all your help Thomas, I look forward to our conversation later. Simon, we have an opportunity to learn from this man, I may be able to make him tell the truth, but I cannot compel him to speak nor force him to speak a language which I understand. He may still have insight into Maria's murder if he was with the Falkovnians at her shop or can confirm they were not at her shop."

Morning finally arrives in the Crossing, after the party of last night Ludwig had quite the amount of people to tend to. Absolutely making sure to tell everyone he helped that his new apothecary would open soon and is easily accessible in town, he had comforting dreams about his new priced possession. People would come throughout the whole world to be operated on, everyone approved of his methods and was more than happy to donate a organ or two. With the leftovers he would make entire new humanoids.. "This is the dream!" he thought, waking up shortly after in disappointment.

"...it was a dream. Still, I should treat it as motivation towards my goal." Turning his frown upside down, he steps out of his bed in the manor and puts on his clothes. Pulling his pants up, strapping his belt, buttoning his jacket, and throwing some sort of grease through his hair. Ludwig looks ready to officially open for business. He fills his backpack with items he would need on the job, some pliers, handsaw, syringes, needles, vials, herbs, replacement glasses, magnifying glasses, shadow cutters, everything he could carry with him. "That looks good.. Time to practice medicine." He thinks to himself, looking at his reflection in the mirror. Strapping his kit around his chest, he's armed and ready to go outside.

Making his way to his apothecary, he arrives at the front door and looks in awe at how they've built it. "Absolute quality work. Those craftsmen in the Crossing know how to build something proper, though it couldn't ever match Germonic standards.. Though for normal standards, still quality work." He happily digs into his pockets and pulls out a key to unlock his front door. Looking inside, he's absolutely taken away by the nostalgic feeling of finally owning his own pharmacy again. Unable to contain his excitement, his thoughts become vocalized.

"So the operating table will be moved over here, together with a bucket below some of the holes in the table to catch leftover blood. Also some leather straps in case anesthesia ceases to work.. always a pity when that happens. Oh! I should store excessive herbs over here.. and some over there. Also need a storage box cooled with ice to keep limbs, you can never have enough limbs." He rattles on and on as he practically hops through his apothecary like a kid in a candy store.

"I'm going to need some experienced people to work here, James will take care of the funding until we manage to sustain ourselves. I wonder who would have some decent medical knowledge. Perian would think about it, Bernard is a.. heretic, Léone as well.. I think everyone I decently know is heretic, what a shame.. There'll still be hope for them through the ways of science, I'm sure of it." He jumps and twirls, eventually landing on an empty chair.

"Well then, I should make my way to the public. Make my voice heard and my job positions opened!" He says, fist clenched upwards in the air as he leaves the apothecary. Locking the door behind him, he makes his way to The Dancing Lady, having heard it functioned as a city hall.

Constabulary:

"Thank you Arissa, and I will talk to you later Bernard, good luck Simon." says Thomas as he heads out the door waving a careless hand over his head. Simon stared after him for a moment before snapping back to the scene in front of him. "Whoa lighten up a little Ms. You said that word like a cold winter's curse, Simon will do just fine for now."

His attention then turns to Bernard nodding a bit. "I've seen similar things used in the past, so I'll allow such a thing because it does not force someone against their will. I will however have to draw the line at other forms of interrogation. Am I understood?" says Simon looking to Arissa with the warning. "I know Thomas would often bend the rules a bit but I'm not going to turn a blind eye to any form of abuse. If that's understood then you can help me question him further and ask some of your own questions if he is willing to answer."

Kallisto smiled faintly at Aluc's excitement before it faded as she heard the rest of what Aluc said, and ... how she had said it. Children of Blood ... and Children of Snakes... she ran a somewhat shaky hand through her hair as her mind worked -- with what Leon had mentioned before, then the supposed immortality of the serpent itself, Legba's comments on how long the tribe in the swamps had been dealing with it ...

Now she was even more convinced her dream had been a warning of what was to come -- but where had it come from? She thought briefly on the bear and hawk from her dreams ... them maybe? This was becoming more than just a "snake hunt", and her concern of it turning its attention to the Crossing was growing even more.

Kallisto rubbed underneath Aluc's beak as she neared the Marsh house, "You have truly done much for me Aluc ... I hope 'awakening' you helps repay the debt I owe you -- beyond mere 'shinies'." She knocked on the door, unsure who all would be at the house -- it seemed to vary so much every time she came.

Arissa looks to Bernard as he put a hand on her shoulder, and her gaze melted considerably. She sighed and turned back to Simon apologetically. “I do not mean to offend you, Simon. I only wish to see justice for my friend’s loss.” She pauses for a moment before slowly nodding. “Very well. I promise not to harm the man. May we begin?”

Léone nods softly, following after James. She was also hoping they could make amends, creating rifts wouldn't help anyone in tough times. "Alright, sounds like a plan." She puts on her best socialite smile and tries her best to keep up appearances as they said their goodbyes to all the people she'd probably never see again.

"At least I get the practice," she mused as they finally discover her mother and brother in the side room. Walking in she keeps up her smile, nodding at the both of them. "It's good to see that you're doing alright - Mother, Marcel."

As they bring up plans for a wedding and turn to her for input, she mulls it over for a bit before shrugging. She didn't come all the way out here just to be dragged right back into family affairs. "Honestly, I'd prefer a quiet affair here in the Crossing, away from all the politics and business. I'm sure you understand, especially after... recent events."

She continues on, trying to brush over the topic of the prior night as quickly as possible. "But I promise you we'll come to visit as soon as we can, even without any special occasion. Don't worry, I'd love to have a family reunion as much as you do." She flashes a half smile. "I'm sure there's quite a lot to catch up on."

Blackburn Manor:

"I understand completely," says Elise looking over to Leone with what looked like approval. "I'm sure Rosie will be excited to hear the news that you finally caught the eye of someone who will take care of you."

James smiled at this before holding out the box he had brought with him. "I've found and made the content in question, so that you could have it before you leave," says James as Elise reached out taking the box, and once realizing what it was she held it with more reverence.

"Oh my.... did you even sleep?" she asks concerned looking briefly to Leone for the truth of it rather than James' response. "I slept briefly, there will be time enough to catch up soon once everyone has been seen off."

"Thank you, James." says Elise in probably the most genuine voice Leone has ever heard. That or she had been practicing all night for the right inflections.

"For what it's worth, sorry for stealing from you. Though you are going to need to be careful if you're keeping my sister here. You're main house is secured by a length of river but that strength is also a weakness should you need help it is so far away," says Marcel in a flat voice looking out the window. He turns as James seems to stare daggers at Marcel. He simply allows his gaze to pass over James to Leone. "I'll make sure Rosie knows that out of all of her siblings it was you that manage to obtain the cure for us."

"I will of course keep up correspondence through letters about shipping costs, and ventures at expanding," says Elise cutting into what might have been a growing silence.
"Let us know when you're coming up ok, Ellie? I want to surprise Rosie when you do."

Constabulary:

Simon nods seeing Arissa's understanding and then takes them back to the cells. He leans against the far wall knocking on one of the bars with the end of a key before putting it away just to get the prisoner's attention. Dmitri turned away from the wall, looking at the three gathered before him. "Ah the Priest, and the Demon. What a fitting pair? I won't talk as long as she is here."

Simon frowns at this looking over to Arissa. "You've already met I presume?" asked Simon puzzling out Dmitri's response.

Arissa turns to Simon and nods. “Ja, it was Jonathan and I who had apprehended him and his companions in the first place. This ‘man’ before you was content to shrink into the corner and wet himself rather than to challenge me. It truly is pitiful how weak his mind must be to fall for such an illusion.” Arissa then turns back to Dmitri and glares at him. “I can assure you, however, the blows that I dealt to your comrades were quite real. Perhaps you wish for a demonstration?”

Constabulary:

"What you did to me was far from an illusion, I suspect you're craft lies a bit more deeply seeded in the mind," says Simon looking back to Dmitri. "So you're unwilling to cooperate with Arissa present?"

Dmitri nodded his confirmation, before Simon looks to Arissa shrugging. "Going to have to ask you to leave unfortunately, doesn't help that you seem to want to antagonize him," says Simon with a bit of a frown.

Bernard followed Arissa and Simon into the cell block. He stood behind the two, curious to see how things would go. As Dmitri insulted Arissa he clenched his jaw, trying hard to hold his tongue. As Simon fired a salvo of his own, Bernard's ears burned, he wanted to say something but knew this opportunity to speak with Dimitri was far too important to pass up - he would speak with Simon later. He took a step forward, taking Arissa's hand.

Drawing her attention he smiled at her, "Arissa, perhaps it's best that you step out for a moment. If Dimitri is willing to talk then we'll see what he has to say. If not, we'll find another way." Bernard took a deep breath, looking to Dimitri, "That's the deal, right? She steps out and you speak up?" He released Arissa hand and stood up straight, placing his hands behind his back, watching the man in the cage.

Arissa turns and glares at Simon. “I see you are still holding a grudge for accepting my assistance by your own free will. If I had known that my aid would have incited such prejudice, I would never have offered it. I had hoped that the new sheriff would know that I understand that if I were to utilize enchantment to solve all of my issues, I would be no better than Toben. I see I have set my expectations too high.”

Arissa then turns to Bernard who had taken her hand, and removes it from his grasp. She glared at him as well, and opened her mouth to say something, but her gaze quickly softened at his smile. She turned back to Simon with one more icy look. “I expect answers to the murder of my friend’s mother. If you do not have them, it is on your conscience.” She whirled around before walking out of the room, her frustration growing as she entered the main room and took a seat, her eyes fixed on the door to the cellblock.

Constabulary:

Simon shakes his had waving a hand in front of himself. "You miss understand. You bring your own prejudice into an interrogation and you're only going to see what your willing to see. You think he may have something to do with Maria Einhorn's death fine, but you check you're emotions at the door. You are right that my own suspicion of your abilities makes me doubt that you used simple illusions if he called you a demon. I'm fairly good at reading people who try to pass lies as truth, better than Thomas anyways," says Simon looking over to Dmitri to see if he was going to confirm the deal. Dmitri once again nodded his ascent to Bernard and Simon. Simon watched Arissa leave with a neutral face then looked to Bernard. "Alright go ahead with the spell, it would be in your best interest to allow the spell to work Dmitri. We'll start with you and your men's suspected involvement with the death of Maria Einhorn."

After Bernard cast the spell he would feel both Simon and Dmitri allow the spell to wash over them. Once it was done Dmitri stood up walking over to the bars to lean in. "Is she gone?" he asked simply, and Simon responded. "Yes she is, now about that question."

Dmitri nodded understanding, and then looked to Bernard. "It is common for Falkovnians to be the first to be blamed in murders, because people are unwilling to accept the realities that there are murderer's even among their own people," says Dmitri as his eyes seem to be intently studying Bernard.
"I did over hear Vlakovich saying that he needed to stop by the smiths. It was about another matter that I wasn't here for, but I did get out of him that it involved a recent deal that had been brokered between the smithy and Falkovnian's government. He seemed to be of the impression that she would be coming back with us on the return trip."

Peri about to comment on all that Van Rochten had said when she heard a knocking. Excusing herself she shuffled off down the hall to the door welcoming Kallisto. “Morning,” before she could greet Peri back Peri offers her entry. “You’ve arrived just in time, “Doctor Van Richten is here about the possible Naga, he has posed a question I don’t have an answer to. Come in.”

As Bernard cast the spell, he felt the truth at the tip of his tongue but with unexpected ease, he pushed it back down. When the other two allowed the spell to work, he relaxed, it was oddly comforting to know that what he heard was the truth regardless of who it was that spoke it. Bernard began to think on what Dmitri had said. "I never believed the Falkovnians did it, but it is always best to make sure. Was Vlakovich the only one who left your side that evening? It was my understanding that they were your escorts, that they would scarcely leave your side." Bernard then looked Simon, "Simon, do you have the Falkovnian blade? It might help to know who among them held it if any. Maybe they gave an excuse for its absence the night of the ball, it was ceremonial after all, the kind of thing you would expect one to wear to a formal occasion."

Constabulary:

"Then you are wiser than you appear. Despite Falkovnian's having a bad reputation most are not idiots who would go around brandishing weapons against foreign civilians. At least not from what I've seen, though their leader is another matter entirely. Vlakovich was the only one to have left my side, and no he was not missing a sword when he came back that night," says Dmitri as a look of resignation passes over his face. "They were indeed to be my body guards and now my life is forfeit with their deaths."

"Forfeit how? We do not have any evidence currently to convict you of anything other than perhaps associating with men that attacked two towns folk by the sounds of it, and the attempted theft of a third. From what I know of the situation you didn't even raise a finger in the Falkovnian's defense nor did you attack Jonathan and Arissa," asked Simon for clarification. Dmitri laughed as Simon's words.

"It is not YOUR judgement that concerns me but that of my former King. He will find me, and I will be dead. I am content that it will be swift,"
says Dmitri in a low resigned voice. Simon seemed to think on that for a moment before turning to Bernard.

"Did you want me to retrieve the blade?" he asks looking between Bernard and Dmitri.

Léone sighs at Marcel, shrugging. "I didn't do it for the credit. And if it wasn't me, it probably would've been one of you guys... one way or another." She stares at him for but a moment before breaking eye contact. "We'll... keep your advice in mind. Seems you know a lot more than you're letting on, huh?"

Moving on quickly, she turns to Elise and flashes a smile. "I'll be sure to let you know when we come, mother. I'm hoping it won't be too long before then." She glances between the two of them, trying but not expecting to get a read on their intentions. "You're leaving soon, I imagine? There must be lots of business waiting for you back home, I wouldn't want to keep you waiting."

Bernard considers for a moment. "I'm not sure the blade will be useful if Vlakovich was not missing one, though I wonder if the Adaptive Weapon was truly missing at all or was right under our noses." He turns back to Dmitri, "Did anyone else know of the meeting between Vlakovich and Maria Einhorn, the smithy who died?" Bernard realized that his continued questioning was bordering on insensitive, but he needed answers for Arissa or he would have gotten nowhere. Once I have these answers, we can see about keeping Dmitri safe and the theft at the manor. Bernard turned to Simon, "Could Derek have done it?"

Constabulary:

"As far as I am aware only me, and my fellow body guards were aware. That is not to say there aren't superiors who sent Vlakovich orders that would know and potential spies that might have found out. The Falkovnians have no end of enemies, and do themselves no favor in this regard. That woman that found me while I tried to rouse Vlakovich saw to his end. She was Richemulouse with white hair and I vaguely recall her from the morning," says Dmitri as he walked back and sat down on his cot. Simon when the question is posed to him he stops and then considers. He takes quiet a few moments to think. "It is no secret that Maria was the dominant personality in that relationship. Derek was an foreigner journeyman blacksmith from Nova Vassa traveling the world before he settled down here with Maria. I don't know entirely their story to tell you the truth. I always suspected their common ground was advancing smithing to an art. Their fortune would go to Jonathan before Derek though."

Bernard nodded, "Derek had mentioned taking Jonathan and the fortune to Nova Vassa. I don't know what to think about the murder." He seems confused at the mention of Violette who he'd only met the previous night. "Violette? What happened with her that morning? And what was she doing at the vault when she found you?"

He turned back to Dmitri, "I'm sure Simon has questions of the theft, as do I. Let's start with who is the Wizard King and what is the Helle Welle?"

Bernard continued after watching Dmitri's resigned state,"Obviously we're not interested in your death. What would it take to keep you safe? If he could offer you protection, would you work for James Blackburn? I imagine his work is similar to your science if you were sent to study something of his."

"Sorry to hear that, but I don't think Jonathan will be up to traveling until he's better," says Simon as he starts to think about that. Dmitri looks into his hands in front of himself and grasps them together a few times.

"As far as I could tell she wanted revenge killed Vlakovich for words they had exchanged that morning. I'd rather not repeat them here, but needless to say her family honor was challenged, and a certain ruler was claimed to be able to... dominate another ruler," says Dmitri blushing at bit at the mention of this. "As to your other question I'm surprised you do not know his many titles. King Azalin Rex, the Wizard King of Darkon. As for Helle Welle, I only knows he needs it for something he is planning in Il Aluk, his capital city not far from his castle. The Falkovnians believe it is something big and want to deny him whatever he plans."

Dmitri sighs at Bernard's last few questions. "Even where he to accept me, he'd only be placing his own life in danger and potentially those he cares about, sometimes even friends. I've seen the Kargatane wipe out entire families from existence, and in my experience there is no stopping them, they will find me. And they will most likely kill me. I am a traitor to my own kingdom, and who would ever trust a traitor?" says Dmitri looking over at Bernard. His face was gaunt now. "Just ask your questions and forget about me."

"We will do the best we can to protect you, I would think that the King would send an official request to send you back for judgement, not seek to send assassin's into other countries," says Simon. Dmitri laughs bitterly.

"There already here among you, the Wizard's King's reach is both far and wide. Even in Falkovnia his enemy's state I wasn't guaranteed safety. I suspect he is already aware or will soon be aware of what transpired last night. My guess is he will also send someone after the Helle Welle, soon. If he does not straight up ask for it, he will take it," continues Dmitri.

"There's one thing that's bothering me with this. You claim that both Arissa, Jonathan, and Violette all were at the vault to Blackburn Manor. I'm not entirely familiar with the infrastructure but isn't that on a completely different floor than the Ballroom where they should have been enjoying their evening?" asked Simon looking between Dmitri and Bernard for a moment. "Did it look like they were expecting you?"

"No, it did not look like they were expecting us. I think we all took a moment to register the fact before the fighting began," says Dmitri.

"Suspicious but there's no crime for leaving a Ball for some privacy..." said Simon unconvinced. "Any idea what they might have been reasonably doing Bernard?"

Bernard turned to Simon, "Jonathan was retrieving an item from James' vault, what it was I don't know. When he left I sent Arissa after him, as you know he's not been doing well and with his mother's death..." Bernard paused for a moment. "They encountered the Falkovnians unexpectedly, then Arissa jumped out the window to assist with Isaiah's intrusion, I think I saw Jonathan during the fight but he was not there by the time James and I had our... discussion. I have no idea what Violette was doing in that area of the manor, but I don't recall seeing her at the ball at all."

Bernard's look hardened and he set his gaze on Simon, "I want to do better than the last generation, Simon. We need to work together, but be careful with your implications. Arissa means the world to me. Rumors will spread, I'm aggressive and implusive and terrifyingly strong, I consort with spirits and defy the church proper, and I have little tolerance for lies and bullshit, fine. Let the people of Blackburn's Crossing talk about me, but not a single whisper of that tortured woman. She's been through enough, this time it's her happy ending. I was going to ask what she did that scarred you so, but I don't need to know. Whatever is wrong between you... Fix it."

Bernard relaxed. He knew he'd done it again. This is why he was a terrible choice for the head of church, and why he needed to speak with Thomas. Bernard never cared how others felt about him beyond how it reflected on his family, but his family was gone - dead or missing - and he had so little left, he had to protect what little there was. "I'm sorry Simon, I was out of line, but she means that much to me."

Bernard turned back to Dmitri, ready to change the subject, "The Helle Welle, you said that is was going to be used in Il Alluk against his own people, what purpose could that serve? If you had to hide the machine you were sent to steal where would you hide it? And do you think the device, whatever it is, is completed?"

Constabulary:

Simon nods to Bernards explanation seeming to accept it as true.

"I see what Thomas meant by you being defensive. It's alright, I get it. Anyone talking bad about your woman isn't going to be seen in the best of light, I think it's that way with every man to some degree. Important part is you see past the initial reaction and think as to why someone might think the way they do. Luckily for me you've explained it through your words but not everyone does so. I'm not part of the family's that found this family, hell I'm not even a full local if your talking about born and raised here. I met Thomas and decided he was a good enough man for me to place my trust in," says Simon his face quiet different than the stern expression that Thomas would have been wearing at the outburst. "Intimidation is a useful tool for obedience, but a shit one for making friends. From what I've seen of Arissa you'll have your hands full without taking up arms against sea of troubles. As for what went on between me and her, I can see why you think I might have a prejudice. While I'm under this truth spell I will say this. I willingly consented to fall under the affects of a spell which would coerce me to tell the truth, because your friend thought it was the only way to be sure that I wasn't lying. I'm getting the feeling you and her are just like Thomas in that regard. Once you focused in on something you focus until the point where you're not sure who you can trust. I'd like you to trust me Bernard, but I can't force that, otherwise its not really trust. That being said I won't turn a blind eye to any antics that fall within my purview."

Dmitri shakes his head. "I said he's planning for something in Il Aluk, not that he wished to use something on civilians. The King is more nuanced than what you suggest. He is how do you say.... an Iron Fist wrapped in a Velvet Glove. We do not know what purpose it serves only that if he wants it then we'd like to keep him from getting it. If I had to hide the thing I'd throw it into the bottom of the ocean."

When he was asked if he thought the device was completed he contemplated for a moment. "If I were in the Wizard King's shoes, I would kill the one's who made it if the device was important enough," says Dmitri shrugging.
"In all honesty I do not know, I briefly glimpsed the object and now whatever it is, or whatever it does is with the family that made it. I did find it intriguing that we found out about this after I word reached us of Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn's demise, add to the fact they didn't send him to the closer University in Dementlieu but instead to the University of Il Aluk from which he has returned."

Entering the house Kallisto bowed her head slightly towards Perian, Aluc perched on her shoulder, twisting her head back and forth to get a better look.

"Oh? I don't know if I have the answer either, but Aluc told me something very concerning earlier ..." She followed Perian as she was led towards where Van Richten sat, bowing her head towards him as well.

"Hello, it is nice to meet you. My name's Kallisto, and this one," she leaned her head towards Aluc, "is Aluc. She's been helping me try to find the serpent -- Perian said you think it's a ... 'naga'?" Reaching into her pouch she pulled out the drawing, "I do not know one way or the other, but ... I have seen it, and where words fail, drawings will work."

She offered to page for him to look over, curious what all he knew about such things. Glancing towards Perian before looking to Van Richten, "Aluc ... told me earlier she saw it give birth -- to two-legged creatures that were snake-like as well ... Perian offered to 'awaken' Aluc, hopefully she can give a better description afterwards, but from the sounds of it ... there's at least ten or more of what ever they are running around in the swamps."
