well, yeah, of course he does. Winston has encountered lots of sea monsters in the depths of the ocean and will tell stories to the crew.

is winston good at his role?

well, sometimes. sure he's mostly a good captain and looks after his crew and does his best to make the best decisions for the crew. however, an impulsive streak leads to rash behavior.

how did winston become captain?

well, there are many stories about how winston acquired the howling eel and became the captain. some say that he found it abandoned drifting along the seas and decided to climb aboard and discovered that it is indeed abandoned, some say that winnie borrowed it from someone. who knows!

  Odette stands around average height, at 5’7. She has very straight black hair that ends around her waist. Typically, she has bangs and wears her hair up in some kind of style, like ponytail, bun or a braid. She usually only wears her hair down on the ship or in the brief moments where they can relax. She has a slim build that is toned due to the hair work required on a ship, work she doesn’t much care for but she will help when she has to. She has a round face, accented with sharp cheekbones and jawline. Her entire body is covered with various tattoos that mask a childhood of scars that you can no longer see due to the thick black ink.
  
  Often, Odette wears clothes that aren’t very suffocating. Free, flowy clothes that hide her figure and make her less recognizable. Because of this desire for anonymity, she is also often seen wearing a hat when she goes out into town. She knows she’s recognizable in some towns due to being a “foreigner,” so she tries where she can to blend in. She also has a few “fine” clothes that she acquired in her own ways (often thievery, but not always) that she covets and takes special care of, like functional fur coats and special work boots.

  Usually, Odette is fairly charming and is good at reading people. However, some social cues are hard for her due to either cultural differences or her sheltered upbringing. She has done a lot of growing but sometimes she still gets tripped up. This is usually when she goes to a new country or meets someone very different than her usuals. When interfacing with the public, she tries to leave her personality out of it as much as she can, because she knows she can be a bit abrasive. She tends to be calculating and analyzing people constantly, which can be good when it comes to trying to procure secrets and information, it can also make the people around her feel like she is judging them or trying to make them feel small. It’s not her fault she is an excellent observer and can recognize patterns of behavior easily.
  
  However, she is still witty and can win people over with her humor and charm, she tends to be very good at first impressions and rides that until she no longer can. She is just guarded (or afraid) of people knowing her behind her carefully constructed mask, because inside she is often the scared little girl in a dangerous situation with nobody around to help her. She tends to not ask for help from others. She can be extremely paranoid, often seeing faces from her past chasing her even if they aren’t there, or reading too much into people’s responses and thinking they are against her. One of her biggest flaws is that she is quick to anger, which often, no amount of being charming or being able to read people can help if she shoots off with what’s on her mind. Which she can often do without meaning to, especially when people press her buttons.   Shortly before Odette was born, French missionaries came to her hometown in Vietnam and evangelized to the citizens there. While many didn’t take to the message, a small church group formed that included her family. Things started slowly at first, they were just normal followers of the Catholic God, learning things from the missionaries who were setting up the church. By the time Odette was born, all but one of the missionaries who’d come had left, with the remainder staying behind to lead the church. As she grew up, the zealotry of the church ramped up to a very high degree, with the church leaders encouraging many extreme behaviors. Things like self-scarification, extreme self punishment for “unforgivable” sins, and living lives of extreme scarcity were commonplace amongst church members. Odette’s family was particularly passionate about their newfound religion and became church leaders when she was very young, expecting the conformity of their daughter.
  
  Odette would often be punished for very minor things, like taking extra bread crusts because she was hungry, or talking to children who were not a part of their church. One particularly bad incident was one time when a member of the community who wasn’t part of the church-cult tried to show some kindness to Odette and her younger sister and gave them food and a homemade doll for each of them. No older than 8 and 6, Odette and her sister gladly took them, not having many nice things in their lives (neither of them could remember having received a gift before). Not getting caught for the food, neither one of them could hide their dolls for long. Once found out, their parents were irate, taking the girls straight to the church where they burned their dolls and gave the girls their first brand into their back (the preferred method of self-scarification in the church). There would be many instances like this as Odette grew up. This hardened her to her family and the world, where she felt like there was no hope in her life.
  
  One day, shortly after her 17th birthday, she met a man with a ship who was passing through her town. She could tell he was from far away because he looked like their priest. Wanting to get far away and never come back, Odette left in the dead of night with nothing but the clothes on her back to stow away on his ship. Hiding there for many days, sneaking only scraps of food stowed away, they eventually found her. She looked wild and feral and they didn’t know what to do with her. Fluent in French (that’s all they spoke in the church), she told them that she just wanted to leave and go to France. Taking into account her stringy hair, thin appearance and wild eyes, they took some pity on her. Though they made her work very hard on the ship for her transgressions, she was always thankful for the mercy they showed upon her by letting her stay. When they eventually made it to France, they let her go on her way.
  
  Once there, she changed her name to Odette Blanc and didn’t look back to her past at all. In fact, she has been running from it, hoping to never return and never see any of her family again, even if leaving her sister felt like the biggest betrayal of her life
  
  At first, Odette didn’t know what to do with herself, in a new country with no connections and no money to her name. She felt awkward and out of place, not always knowing how to talk to these strange new people (she barely knew how to talk to anyone outside of her cult). However, after her time on the ship and only a couple of terrible interactions, she began to get her bearings on things. Not able to find a job yet, she spent her days at the docks, begging people for money. Eventually, she met a friend named Cyrille Marin, a con artist who spent much of their time between the docks pulling cons and the local pub playing cards. Odette learned many of her skills from Cyrille, who immediately took a liking to her and brought her under their wing. Cyrille taught her to play cards, to count them and to read the body language of other players. She came to find that she was particularly good at reading people, as she’d walked on eggshells her entire life, and that people would often believe what she had to say. She learned the art of keeping secrets, though that one was a little harder, as she had the liar in her beaten out long ago. She came to love Cyrille as the only parental figure she’d ever really had. But Cyrille was still a con artist at heart and though they loved Odette in return, they couldn’t help but chase the next big cash grab. Odette helped Cyrille to pull a con on a big ship that was coming in to port, making it on the ship and almost into the store rooms where there ought to be some kind of treasure. However, little did they know this was a merchant ship from England protected by the navy, and they were caught red handed. Cyrille ran and fought their way off the ship without helping Odette, who was caught and taken prisoner by the English Navy.
  
  They begun to transport her to England to face the music for her crimes, but she didn’t go down without a fight. She squirmed and bit and constantly bemoaned her situation, bugging whatever guard was by her cell in the brig. They ignored her for the most part – however, luckily, one day a band of pirates came and began to take over the ship, and she seized her moment to escape, grabbing a guard’s spare knife and holding him by knifepoint to let her go. When the pirates realized she was fighting the English crew, they took her with them. Initially, she really enjoyed it, always seeking out and providing the crew with information that she thought would be helpful and fighting her way through any crew they encountered. She learned that being on a crew was hard, and that she needed to make herself useful. She learned to guard information and keep powerful secrets to herself. She also learned the cold hard truth about pirates: they only care about their treasure. Odette has traveled from crew to crew, knowing to go where she could be appreciated, not where the crew would screw her over.   Simon stands at 5’9 and has a fairly stocky build. He’s worked pretty hard his whole life, and you can see that in the callouses on his hands and feet. He’s got a scar on his lip that he got in the battle on his father’s ship, but he also has all kinds of scars on his hands and arms from working closely with his father building ships and other woodworking throughout his life.
  
  He has light brown hair that’s grown out a bit long on top with the sides shaved. He wears it pushed back, either just straight up pushed back or sometimes in braids. He wears mostly practical clothes, and lots of his clothes have holes in them and are really old. He keeps his beard trimmed though he’s usually a bit scruffy.   Simon is very much an outgoing people person. He wants to be around others and tends to be a bit more on the rambunctious side. He favors a loud party to a quiet gathering. He’s usually friendly and enjoys joking with people, but sometimes his jokes can have a meaner side to them. His sarcasm often makes people think that he’s being mean but usually, he just doesn’t realize when his jokes are taken too far or hurting someone’s feelings. He’s dramatic, but in a funny way that often plays into his jokes. This can also cause him to jump to conclusions about people, and he is quick to jump to grudges that he holds tight to.
  
  With that, he is often very confrontational to people that he sees have done him wrong. It can be very minor things, but if you had an attitude with him or insulted him one time, he tends to avoid you due to feeling hurt or that you don’t like him. He doesn’t tend to let things slide, and if he does it ends up blowing up in an even bigger confrontation. If something bothers him, it is nagging and persistent. He is also a bit of an alcoholic, which just lends itself to his rowdiness. He is never mean when he is drinking, he is usually way more friendly and nicer, like a touchy-feely drunk.
  
  He doesn’t care much for superstition and doesn’t believe in any gods. He doesn’t care about faith or sea monsters. He doesn’t go out of his way to disrespect them for other people’s sake but he just doesn’t particularly care.

  Growing up, all Simon knew was the sea. Living on a coastal city, he played by the sea with his friends and heard its call all the while. His father also worked on his own merchant ship, always reminding Simon that he was to follow in his footsteps as he got older. It was the family business so to speak, and Simon being his father’s only son, was to carry along the family business. Before he ever even stepped foot on a ship, he was helping his father to work on them and build them. Ship repairs were something his father found extremely important for Simon to know, and though he didn’t always pay attention (Simon cared more for the sea itself than the ships that carried him there, always begging his father to take him with him), he gained a pretty basic knowledge of how to fix them. Eventually, at 16, his father had deemed that his schooling was enough and it was time to take Simon out with him.
  
  They had two good years of sailing together before they picked up a job to transport passengers that included an Earl and his family for an important diplomatic trip. This proved to be doom for Simon and his father, as shortly after taking off, their ship was attacked by a pirate ship, seeking to kidnap or kill the Earl, helped along by a few members of the crew. One of these members included a man who had been close with his father, someone that Simon had seen as his uncle. In the fray, his father was killed and Simon was thrown from the ship. Floating, helpless, through turbulent waters, Simon was sure that he was to be killed himself. However, come morning he found himself washed up upon a beach.
  
  He woke to the sound of a beautiful song that called to him, compelled him closer to find a beautiful creature along the shore of the island. He’d heard of sirens, but never thought he’d see one or thought they were real. This creature was compelling, as sirens were. She had long flowing dark hair against pale skin and a dull copper tail. Her call lured him, but she had only wanted to bring him close to her, not to eat him… yet. She used him, used her call to make the boy fall in love with her, soaked up his devotion as though it fed her like his flesh would have. Captivated, Simon never tried to leave, he genuinely thought she cared for him as much as he cared for her, but she didn’t care for him in any real way. He was a fascinating creature for her, like a dog on a leash; she enjoyed his company, but only kept him around to entertain herself.
  
  When Simon realized he was being used, the island became his prison which he could not escape. Kept for months, he only began to realize this near the end of his captivity, and only because he spent much of his time dehydrated and hungry, snapping him out of the siren’s call. Luckily, it wasn’t long before the Howling Eel came along and rescued him from the isle, sick as could be.   Morven is known to change her story every time she tells it, and when conversations veer towards the topic of her past, these will be the only instances where she feels the need to twist the truth. Details will often be misaligned with one another, but those who pay enough attention would notice that some events will stay constant across all retellings, adding up to an obvious amalgamation of half-lies and half-truths. She'll proclaim herself an orphan in most, but not all of her stories. Sometimes, she's an only child, and at other times, she had a brother who unfortunately died in a tragic accident of some kind, although it's always unclear whether he was older or younger than her. She was supposedly forced to fend for herself at a young age on the bustling streets of Aberdeen's underbelly, but her extensive knowledge of advanced weaponry and distaste for poor craftsmanship reveal signs of a more affluent upbringing. Her unease at the thought of rooting herself in one place for too long says more about her than any tale that pours out of her mouth, really, although she'll be hard-pressed to deny this if ever confronted, only supplying the excuse that life should be about the thrill of adventure, and that thrill is lost when a routine becomes predictable, however stable it may be.
  
  One thing is for certain about Morven's past, and that is the fact that she is willing to fight tooth and nail, climb any mountain, and sail every sea just to outrun it. Whatever it takes, she'll do it.

  By the time she met the crew, Morven had already made a name for herself as an up-and-coming black market arms dealer. A back-alley deal gone wrong had her sprinting toward the docks, dueling pistols in hand and a rapier strapped to her side. She made her way onto a random ship, hiding herself below deck between barrels that dwarfed her small form. When morning came and the light poured in to illuminate the lower deck's expansive artillery, Morven found herself taken by the beauty of the cannons' craftsmanship but was appalled by their less-than-adequate state of maintenance. When a crew member eventually came downstairs to gather ingredients for that night's supper, they were quite shocked to find a smiling young woman brandishing a pistol that aimed right at their head.
  
  "Fixed your cannons for ya. Would've blown yerselves to bits trying to fire one if I hadn't cleaned 'em up," she had said, tilting her head in gesture at their shiny new surroundings. "Tell yer captain I'll accept a warm meal and a place in yer ranks as a way of thanks."

  Ever since Renata was a child, she was fascinated by how the world works. In her curiosity about science, Renata made discoveries by experimentation, observation or simply just studying. She was lucky enough to have been raised by a fairly wealthy family, which allowed her to obtain something of an education along with an assortment of books. As she got older, she shadowed a local surgeon - first running errands for him and then later assisting him with his patients. It was here that Renata found a passion in caring for others, as she was able to utilize her scientific knowledge and improve lives. As her mentor got older, more and more responsibility fell on to the shoulders of Renata, who eagerly took the challenge on. In improving some medical techniques or implementing treatment she'd studied, Renata surpassed her mentor rapidly. These changes meant her patients healed more rapidly and had less complications over time, but some feared Renata's efficacy. Slowly, rumors spread throughout her hometown, claiming she was a witch who was utilizing magic to supplement surgical technique. Try as she might to disprove these rumors, the general populace didn't understand her methodology or the science behind it. Just days after her 22nd birthday, Renata was formally accused of being a witch. After little deliberation, the governing officials convicted her, sentencing her to be burned at the stake for her crimes.
  Fortunately, this is not where her story ends.
  
  

  Meeting the Captain and Crew:

  As it were, the captain and crew were in town when Renata was sentenced to the stake. She had previously treated minor wounds for some of them, not realizing they were pirates. Knowing her skill set and not wanting an innocent woman to die, the crew rescued her in spectacular fashion. Because of this, Renata felt she owed a great debt to the crew and joined them on their seafaring adventures.   Selene is an athletically built woman, standing at around 5'6" and being built of pure muscle. Her body is that of someone who is active in the water: broad shoulders, strong legs, toned arms. Despite not the most physically intimidating woman with her blonde hair, doe like blue eyes, and youthful features, Selene is considered to be quite beautiful. She keeps her appearance simple, keeping her hair back in braids and rarely wearing makeup or jewelry. Selene favors practicality over fashion, though she finds a lot of clothing too tight and restrictive. Her pale skin is marred with scars along her right side, deep ridges and raised bumps dancing along her ribcage, shoulders, hip, and legs. She often keeps these scars well concealed, thanks to their location and her love of flowy clothing.
  
  When Selene touches water, something strange begins to happen. Her hair seems to elongate and become a bit more curly, her features sharpen a bit as well. The spaces between her fingers web and the skin along the backs of her hands and up her arms become pebbled with iridescent deep blue scales.   Selene's tale begins with her birth in the warm water of Norwegian Sea, just off the shores of Norway. The first few years of Selene's life was normal, being raised in a large family of merpeople that remained in the area, occasionally migrating north during the warmer summer months once Selene was old enough to keep up. Selene had a particular affinity for sea creatures, much preferring them to the company she often travelled with. She also very quickly found her family's love of humans rather distasteful. She saw sailors spearing whales, scooping up abundances of fish in their nets, caring not for the thriving ecosystem below. Still, Selene couldn't help but feel sorry for them when they were thrown into her waters.
  
  In the height of Selene's fifteenth summer, during one of their many migrations north, the Norwegian Sea was facing a rather unprecedented storm. Torrential rain rocked the surface of the ocean, lightning illuminated the depths, and many of the ships on the waters were being ravaged by the waves. Selene's family was working overtime, scooping sailors up near the coastlines and taking them inland to safety. Selene, eager to prove herself, was making a few particularly risky moves, swimming close to the rocky shoreline where the waves thrashed and spat. While carrying a sailor back to shore, a rogue current caught the pair and slammed them into the rocks.
  
  Selene remembers nothing but the confusion of waking up on the beach and the pure agony that was her tail slowly splitting open, scale by scale, to form two legs. Too weak to carry herself back to the water, Selene passed out once again. She woke up several days later in an infirmary.
  
  With no clue where she was, and no way to contact her family, Selene was entirely stranded in Norway. Eventually finding her way back to the ocean, Selene was broken to find that she was alone. There was no sign of her family, no signs of any merpeople at all. Did they survive? They couldn't have, Selene decided, they wouldn't have left her there if she had. Still, part of her wondered if they were out there somewhere, mourning her as if she were dead.
  
  Selene had to adapt quickly. She fell in with a boating crew, one of the few that she'd encountered before that ferried people between the islands and along the coastline. Selene became a sort of jack of all trades, navigating, teaching, providing, and even sailing the ship occasionally. Sure the work was boring on the surface, shuttling people around, but it was the side business that Selene loved: adventuring, fighting, stealing, swindling. Selene was exceptionally skilled, people tended to listen to her and believe her when she spoke regardless of whether or not she knew what she was talking about. She eventually began to lead small crews on expeditions, though she much preferred to get her hands dirty.
  
  Eventually the group disbanded, leaving Selene largely to her own devices. She never could truly stay away from the ocean, though she never dared to willingly return to its depths. Opal is the product of a kind, nurtured childhood surrounded with support and love from her family. She’s humble and soft-spoken, preferring to prove herself in small, genuine ways instead of grand gestures. Her humility comes as much from a gentle heart as it does a fierce dislike of undue attention.

She wouldn’t describe herself as brave, but the truth of the matter is that Opal is a young woman who stands very firmly by her chosen morals. She may not be brave in that she will never volunteer for attention, but she will stand by her friends without wavering. Her roots are firmly planted and she will not be moved. She’s just as likely to stand beside a stranger as she is a friend if she believes in their cause.

Her hair is thick and long, a coppery red tone with highlights here and there of fiery orange. She often wears it in some sort of half-pinned up style to keep it out of her face (and to keep it from hopelessly tangling). She likes to place shells and pearls in her hair when time allows it-- And of course, when the occasion calls for it.

Opal has large, expressive blue eyes, the exact shade of a ocean. She has small, cupid bow lips and a small, button nose.

She has a slender build, tall at 5’7” and slender. She dresses simply, generally choosing simpler skirts and blouses as a matter of personal preference. Opal does love dresses, but her preference for more flowing fabrics and looser fits means she seldom has the opportunity to wear them. She doesn’t wish to be laughed at, nor embarrass herself.

Opal moves thoughtfully, and though some might accuse her of dawdling, it’s simply that she is very careful in all things and aware of her surroundings.

Her eyes become pools of ink black coals, while her sunkissed skin becomes dull and almost grey in tone. Webs form between her fingers, and gills open on either side of her neck. Her legs fuse together to form a thick tail also dull in tone, however is a deep dark green in colour, almost resembling the darkest depths of the jungle.   isla is a girl who doesn't do things by halves. you ask her to list the known sea monsters, she'd ask you alphabetically or by most recent sightings? and then proceed to do just that. she's also a perceptive person, yet she's often so delightfully oblivious; like knowing all the stars yet unable to shape them into constellations.
  she's also got the curiousity of a 4 year old boy, her inquiries never ceasing, a trait some find endearing and most find infuriating, coming from an adult woman. once you tell her to shut up, though, she'd never strike conversation with you again, and will only speak when spoken to and give the shortest replies. not out of spite nor pettiness, but hurt and embarrassment. it takes her a long time to forgive, and even longer to forget. she won't be vengeful about it, however, just carries the weight with her.
  she likes to think her true to herself, having strayed far away from home to do so. not that she couldn't before, she's just able to do so even more openly, freely, now.

  her mother had often told her stories, of folktales, myths, and occasionally whimsical fairytales. she loved it when it's about merfolks. she'd ask for them again and again, even on the same night, or during the day. she clung to it growing up, always expressing how she'd meet one one day, even wishing she was one some days. however, stories of seafolk and sea monsters were scarce in padstow. so she decided to venture out into the world, for stories, freedom, and a goal she'd kept secret since her hyperfixation begun, for she knew the consequences she might face if she expressed it aloud. she had one wish she'd chased shooting stars for, to have a mermaid girlfriend. childish, innocent, yet foolish to have it still, she knows. alas, she could not change the core of who she is.
  fresh out of padstow, she'd met with a travelling troupe of performers. clicking with more than enough members, they allowed her to tag along, even without a hint of talent in her bones (she was an especially terrible singer). there she became close with a woman, Cecilia. at first, it was to investigate her suspicions of Cece being a merfolk. eventually, the two became more than friends. the troupe knew and was okay with it, even expressed their joy for their budding relationship. it had only lasted a couple months, however, before it was over. since isla poured her whole heart and being into the relationship, she couldn't bear being in close proximity with Cece anymore, and so she just furtively left.
  alone and having to fend for herself since, she became a cunning pickpocket. nothing she was proud of, but there was limited option for a farm girl who excels only in churning butter. she also became quite a remarkable runner, knowing alleys and shortcuts even on towns she's never been prior, estimating their layout. she wasn't always lucky, of course. once she was caught and jailed for a few months.

  izzy first met winston in a bar one fateful evening, and he'd overheard her inquiring rather conspicuously about merfolk, and also bambling on about sea monsters to no one in particular. taking pity on the bartend and intrigue on the girl, he'd approached her, and let her ramble on, which turns into a long conversation back and forth of them sharing their excitement of monsters, animals, and just about anything of the sea, exchanging stories too. he had more to tell, of course. during it, he sometimes dropped hints of being merfolk himself, but izzy seemed to still be oblivious to it, otherwise she'd be stunned. when she could feel him about to go, she'd practically begged to be apart of the crew, promoting herself as this great lookout, lying about her past experience as one. he'd said yes on impulse, a decision frowned upon (or supported?) by his first mate, thinking it'd be fun to see how long until she catch on that he's a merman.
  (after 3 years of being a crew, maybe she has finally caught on, maybe she hasn't. depends on whether somebody straight up told her what the captain is or not)

  Lucy has an adventurous spirit, following her curiosity wherever it leads her. If she is not practicing her combat skills or learning new fighting techniques, Lucy was either reading or exploring the forests that surrounded her small village. She shows a healthy respect for the wild but she does not fear it, not when she has spent time there learning how to hunt with her father.
  
  Her family and friends are the most important people in her life and she would do anything to protect them. Lucy is very protective towards her those she cares for, but because of this, she can be a bit reckless at times in her desire to keep her loved ones safe.
  
  Hunting with her father has taught her how to observe her surroundings but most importantly, how to be patient.   Backstory

  Lucy grew up in a small fishing village on the coast. Her mother had passed away during child-birth, leaving her in the care of her father, who had no inkling on how to raise a child never mind a girl. Even as a child, Lucy displayed a adventurous nature and her father knew that a life of marriage and settling down wouldn't be for her. But he wanted her to be prepared in case she did decide to fly far from home, so when she was old enough to wield a sword, he began to teach her how to protect herself.
  
  Her father owned a small ship that he used to fill commissions for their home village and surrounding villages. When she was old enough to travel, he took her with him and it was there that she learned all about how to read the stars and navigate a vessel. She loved the ocean and vowed that one day she would have her own ship and travel around the world.
  
  But there were those in her village that had a different fate for her. One morning the head of the Blackwell family, the most prominent family in their village, came to their door with a proposition for her father: Lucy should marry his eldest son. Her father declined the offer, knowing Lucy would never be happy with that kind of life.
  
  But the Blackwell's do not take kindly to being denied what they desire and the morning sun saw her fathers ship in flames.
  
  It was then her father knew Lucy needed to leave for her own safety but those he previously viewed as friends refused to take her on board their ship, terrified their vessel would be the next to fall under the torch. Desperate, her father found the Captain of the Howling Eel in the tavern and paid for Lucy to be taken aboard as a crew member.
